I bought a house 2 months ago that had extensive mold which I found out about a few days post closing and was so distressed. When I was searching for drywall specialists, Dana responded quickly. We were able to schedule many estimates on one day for comparison. We scheduled a time for Dana to come out to look at our job to give us an estimate. He was on-time and easy to deal with. He was also the only person to give us an estimate on the spot and in writing. All of the others (and there were 5 of them - took several days and texted me a price). In addition to the estimate, Dana gave us his certificate of liability and references. We hired Dana and his crew to drywall our garage ceiling and to patch some walls. His crew is wonderful. He gave me the best price and had great reviews so we booked a date two weeks out and his painter showed up on time and ready to go. Friendly guy named Ricardo. Neat and Professional work. Did a great job. I'm a DIYer but I hired a professional for this because I did not want paint lines showing up on the ceiling and ceilings are not easy. This was a small job - replacement of aprox 18' x 18' drywall in the bathroom ceiling and paint the ceiling & walls in the bathroom. The estimate provided by Above It All Drywall was less then the other bids which I had obtained for these repairs. They replaced the drywall and it blended in perfectly with the texture of the rest of the ceiling drywall. You could not even see where it had been replaced. Hello, Dana and the Above it All team just finished a job at a condo I am renovating to rent out in Yorba Linda. Dana showed up on time and gave me an estimate on the spot. Included with his estimate was a copy of his contractors liability insurance (a rarity for contractor to have) and a list of references. Very impressive. After checking both, I called Dana and scheduled the job. The drywall crew came in first, on time and as scheduled. They were a very nice group of guys and did a very good job on my place. The paint crew followed. They too were a nice couple of guys and did a nice job on the paint. All in all, I am quite satisfied with my choice to use them. NOT LICENSED. POOR WORK and NO-SHOWS. Dana failed to perform most of the contracted work and the work he did perform was subpar. Additionally, after speaking to the California State Contractors License Board I learned that he is NOT LICENSED to perform most of the work he agreed to perform (According to the Board, Above It All is only licensed to do drywall work, not framing or painting or any other work.) I've watched those shows on HGTV about botched home improvements and thought "who does that happen to?" Sadly, now I know - me. I had multiple bids done for the work and Dana did on onsite bid, provided references and a copy of his insurance. His price was in the middle range but what appealed to me most was that he told me he was qualified to do all the work I needed - building a dividing wall, installing the drywall and doors and painting the entire interior of the home. The day we were scheduled to begin, Dana's painters did not show up. I had spoken with his office numerous times the previous week to be sure that we were scheduled and to be sure I didn't need to select or purchase paint ahead of time. When I called Dana to ask why he was a no-show, he said he had other stuff to do and "maybe" he could get the painters there next week. I also had flooring to be installed and could not be that far behind schedule so I hired another set of painters at increased cost due to the last minute rush. The next day Dana did send a crew to begin the wall build, drywall and door installation. After the work was "completed" I asked that a number of defects be fixed (the walls were cracking, the doors do not close properly, no hardware was installed so there are no doorknobs (!), and I spent over a year trying to get the work done properly. Dana first refused, but when I said I would not pay the balance owed for the work until it was done properly, Dana then sent the same workers back a few times. When those workers were not able to fix the problems, he sent another contractor who said that the work was so done so poorly that it should be ripped out and redone - the new contractor SENT BY DANA cited improper materials, failure to properly mud and tape seams, not level installation of the doors. Dana refused to fix the work. I then filed a complaint with the State Contractors License Board and was informed that, among other issues, Above It All was not even licensed to build the divider wall OR paint. read more

I should have listened to my alarm bells...Dana, the owner, showed up once to make the quote. After that, all arrangements were done via phone calls. Dana kept telling me the days I wanted didn't work for his availability, so we ended up pushing dates until we found some he liked. Dana never checked back to walk the property for quality control--his drywall guys were here June 23, '21, and his painters were here July 5-9. I emptied my house in the areas where the painters were going to be working because we were also having floor tile installed in the same areas. When the drywall team said no one could be here even after they left, I told my floor tiler he had to pause a couple of days, and again for the painters. Once that was understood by the floor tiler, we walked the rooms and went over everything that needed drywall work. The drywall lead kept saying, "painters do that," and they left after only six hours the first day. One guy returned for an hour the next morning. He collected the drywall payment $1675 for seven hours of work--and they took a lunch break in that time. There were three guys working on the drywall team. They were supposed to be on the job for two days not just one guy for one hour the second day. When the three painters arrived a week later in July, we walked the rooms, and the painter started responding, "the drywall crew was supposed to do that." Also, I pointed out two smart televisions on wall mounts to be cautious of and one museum quality desk in one room that was furnished. That room was not being painted, except for its door framing off the hallway that was being painted. Dana's painter lead decided he did not want to paint at all because I was asking for caution around two smart televisions and the one room with the desk. He asked Dana to cancel. Dana was leaning toward cancelling, telling me he had more work than he needed. First, the painter wanted me to have the fragile smart televisions that we paid to have mounted removed from the mounts. Finally, he agreed to work with us IF I re-wrapped the televisions to his satisfaction, and IF he didn't paint the inside of the door frame in the room with the desk. I had already bagged each of the televisions in painter's plastic drop cloth. He told me to call Dana about the areas the drywall guys didn't do. Dana was frustrated about the drywall, and he told me it would be done before the weekend. The painter lead said he knew how to drywall, but he wanted Dana to know the other guys left work not complete, and he would be doing it as a favor because he is the painter. In other words, more lowered expectations. It is a month out, and I am still staring at my freshly painted walls with imperfections like the drywall mud chunks sticking out from Dana's drywall guys, and Dana's painters just painted right on top of those. There were two electrical outlets that had an area around the outside of the outlet cover not primed or painted for some reason. I took the covers off and did those missed spots myself a few weeks after they left. The painter lead took the check for $3125 for five days of interior painting. We paid $4800 to Dana, for six days of not on par work on less than1400 square feet--plus the one guy for an hour on June 24th who finished the last drywall replacement for a phone jack removal. I would not consider this review to be a referral for Dana. read more

His crew came out and was very thorough with their prep to scrape the ceilings. It took as much time to cover all the surfaces as it did to scrape. The texture work was a bit sloppy with a fair amount of overspray onto the walls. Two days later the painters arrived and did an average job painting. Not amazing and not bad, just presentable. Their caulking wasn't super sharp but good enough. The overall work was 3 stars add that with the price makes it 3.5 star review. read more

If you're looking for minimum construction standards, DON'T hire this company. They can't get a straight corner, everything is wavy and uneven, no plumb walls, can't align drywall on 2 sides of a doorway and even drywall not screwed at the bottom of the walls. If you dare complain to the owner Dana, he will be rude and might say what he said to me: " I didn't charge you for good work, you would have had to pay a lot more for that!" And he blamed everybody from the house, to the framer, to our "lying eyes" for the bad work. Had I known that I was paying over 13k for substandard work I would have hired ANYONE else. His people would show up after 10 am and would be gone by 4 pm and it took them a long time to finish. Dana, the owner, was bitterly complaining to us saying that "he was losing money on this job" and treating us as if he was doing us a favor! He went from being very pleasant, when he came to give us the estimate, to VERY rude when he realized we were noticing the bad work. His crew was dirty and we had to clean after them everyday. This review is long overdue, but now I can attest to the quality after a full year of living in the remodel. We love Above it All Ceiling and Drywall!!! They do a very quality job and are quite efficient. Dana and his crew transformed my grandmother's house into a modern, fresh living space that we are proud to call home! They scraped our popcorn ceilings, removed wallpaper, retextured walls, replaced light fixtures and installed new lights and fans, painted walls and painted cabinets. They were very knowledgeable about style, paint sheen, and texture choices. I thought I wanted crown moulding in the living room, which would have been more work and more pay for Dana, but he tastefully advised against it (or suggested I reconsider) because he said the style of the homes in my neighborhood isn't quite a fit for that. He was right!!! He was also right about removing some beams on a ceiling that I liked but he showed me how they were crooked. Again, fine eye for detail. The price was very fair. We had a lot of change orders because I liked his work and kept wanting to add things (dimmers on all the lights, etc) so we spent more than the initial estimate. But he is fair and I found his prices to be less than some but his work product is right up there!! When it's time to paint the exterior of the house I'm giving Dana a call! Several months ago I had the bedrooms ceilings redone. This month I had the hallways and living room ceilings redone. This involved scraping off the 1990s popcorn, texturing and painting. The result is very nice. The popcorn was very dirty. The reason for only three stars was the painting prep work. The painter used a roller and as a result did not see the need to mask the walls. This resulted in paint spatter all over the sliding door glass, screen door and the walls. I had a good solid three hours of touchup work to do. The crawlspace door to the attic area was painted in place. I removed it and repainted the edges. So texturing a 5, painting a 2 thus a 3 on this job. Okay maybe a 3+ P.S. Above it all had workman's comp insurance. No other company that quoted this job appeared to be insured. That's a big plus. Why take a chance. read more

With all the rains last winter, my roof sprung quite a number of leaks, which damaged the ceiling throughout my living room. Because I live in a condo, the association stated they would fix it and brought in a totally incompetent contractor whose idea of fixing it entailed spray painting the area, replacing some tape, "re-texturing" (which sprayed half a wall), and prepping to paint. My ceiling looked horrible, and I decided to hire my own contractor to fix the ceiling correctly. Through referrals, I was connected with Dana at Above It All Ceiling and Drywall. He stated the previous "repair" was horrible, and outlined what he felt would need to be done to fix it. Because my living room, dining room and hallway are all joined, he stated he would need to blend in the texture from the living room and re-paint the entire ceiling in the living room, dining room and hallway. This is approximately 400 square feet. He quoted my $650.00 for the ceiling repair and $400.00 for painting - and I provided the paint. The crew (2 man) arrived to fix the ceiling, and they did a fantastic job. They moved the furniture and other items from the living room area, and draped everything in plastic. When they finished, the ceiling looked 100% better - even without the paint! About a week later (due to my schedule, not Dana's), another 2 man crew came out to paint the living room, dining room, and hallway. Once again, they completely removed furniture from the area, and draped everything in plastic - my home looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. When they completed the job, my ceiling looked absolutely beautiful! Only the ceiling was painted, there was no residual paint anywhere. My furniture and belongings were not damaged. And, both times, the crew cleaned up completely and moved the furniture back into place. I was so impressed by the work Above It All has done. The result is beautiful and Dana and his crew was very professional. I would recommend this company highly. read more

So I have been holding off on reviewing Above It All for just about a year now because I generally don't like to complain and cause problems, but what happened a couple days ago as a result of their work, I've decided that I've had enough. About a year ago I hired Dana and Above It All to remove my popcorn ceilings, retexture my walls, paint the interior of my condo, and repair some unwanted damage from the previous owners wall decorations (all of that together is not cheap). I found Above It All on Yelp and was impressed with his reviews and also his professionalism when he came out to bid the job. The job started out perfectly normal, the workers showed up on time every day and were very courteous. I would swing by the house about once a day to check up on them and from all indications they were doing a great job. On day 2 of the job I received a call from Dana and he was FURIOUS. He was yelling and insulting me and was very unprofessional. Apparently we had a misunderstanding about how I was supposed to prep the downstairs bathroom before they came in to retexture and repair it. I will admit that I removed more drywall than I should have before they arrived and he was livid that they now had to replace it. He continued to berate me and tell me "clearly you have no idea what you're doing" and "how in my right would I expect him to fix that, that I have no idea what I'm doing". I started to get angry and expressed back to him that I was a first time homeowner and I did NOT know what I was doing but that did not give him the right to yell and scream at me and insult me. I started to raise my voice back telling him that I was sorry I removed too much drywall but that he should not treat me the way that he was. He started to calm down, apologized for insulting me and then hung up. I understood I had to pay more to fix my mistake but he was so unprofessional, you should never yell at and insult a customer. The bathroom got fixed and 2 days later the house was "complete". Dana NEVER walked the job site to inspect his workers work and didn't even bother to call me once they were done to see if I was happy with their work. I strictly only dealt with his workers. As I inspected downstairs I was very pleased with all of their work and then proceeded to go upstairs to inspect the work they did upstairs. Because the downstairs was done so nicely I assumed the upstairs would reflect the same quality of work so I quickly glanced around the room and gave the workers the OK. It was not until a couple weeks later when we finally moved in that I started to see how bad they had done upstairs. Here is a short list of what they did wrong upstairs: - They did not repair all of the damaged parts of the walls as requested and paid for. - They sealed around the thermostat so it could not be removed from the wall. - They painted OVER the door to the attic furnace so it would not open anymore. - They retextured the walls upstairs with "canned texture" instead of using the spray machine so the spots they "fixed" were a completely different texture and stuck out like a sore thumb. The texture was completely different. Needless to say I was mortified with the quality of work upstairs. I'm assuming different workers worked upstairs than downstairs because I don't understand how there could be such a quality difference. I have lived with the uneven and chunky texture on the walls upstairs now for about a year and every time I come home from work I regret hiring Dana. The last straw was last week when I decided to change out my old thermostat for a new smart Wi-Fi thermostat. I went to remove the old thermostat from the wall and realized that the workers had sealed the thermostat to the wall and then painted around it so it could not be removed without damaging the paint and drywall. Also, when I went to go into the attic to access the furnace I realized that they had completely painted over the door to the attic and I had to pry open the door with a screwdriver which not only damaged the paint but also damaged the door itself. Needless to say I am absolutely livid now which is why I am finally sitting down and writing this review. I want to call Dana and tell him how bad of a job he did, but after the last time we talked on the phone (the bathroom issue) and experienced how unprofessional he was, I do not know if he would even care about what his workers did in my house. It is very unfortunate that it had to come to this because in my line of work a lot of my clients ask me for references on drywaller's and painters and if he would've done the job that I paid him for I would've brought him a lot of business. Maybe he will read this and attempt to contact me and rectify the problem, but like I said before if our last phone conversation is any gauge of his professionalism I do not expect to hear from him. I would love for him to come out and complete the work I paid him for but who knows. read more

Dana gave me a fair price and the work done to remove the popcorn ceiling in my 2,000 sq ft house was done satisfactorily but the crew left a mess of my front yard. They rinsed their tools on my front lawn and left me with patches of white grass and a lot of the ceiling debris. Dana forgot we had specified a specific shade of white we chose and his paint crew showed up with another shade, his standard color which we specifically said we did not want. They went back to the paint store and got the right color. The ceilings look good but I'm quite unhappy with the way they cleaned up. Also troubling is that Dana seemed unconcerned with what I was left with. read more
