While walking to my shuttle stop a few evenings ago I smelled something mouth watering good. I followed my nose and arrived at the unassuming Above The Blue food stand. I decided to come back a couple nights later after a late night run to the grocery store. The chef was cooking up a cheesesteak for another order, so I decided to get the same thing. 2 years ago, I was in Breckenridge ordered takeout from a small random shack and had one the best meatball subs I've had in a long time - and I can finally say that I can put a name to the restaurant now! I paid multiple vists to Above The Blue during my week long stay in Breckenridge, mostly around lunchtime. I'm surprised that there isn't more people lining up to try this place out! Above The Blue is it's own unassuming shack located right next to the downtown Breckenridge area - you can enjoy your food at their outdoor tables set up around the shack and take in the creek side scenery as you do. You can also just take your order when you are done, the shack was also designed for skiers/hikers to grab and go with their food. Service is fast, you place your order and you usually only have to wait 5-10 minutes for your food. I got a couple of options from this place, which I'll review down below: Meatball Sub ($13): If you are looking for a very solid and absolutely delicious meatball sub, I would wholeheartedly recommend this one! I think this is one of the best meatball subs I've had so far in CO. You receive: 3 heaping meatballs with broiled cheese over it. The meatballs themselves, tender as can be and extremely moist and juicy. The marinara sauce that goes over the meatballs has a bit of spice and gives the extra bitey flavor dimension that takes it to the upper levels. The bread is toasted and has a pleasing crispiness to it. I've had my fair share of this particular sub while skiing in Breck and it slaps. Walking Taco ($8): As novel and tasty as the walking taco may be, I would say skip this option unless you are feeling taco meat, sour cream, and cheese in a chip bag. I think that $8 is pretty steep considering the ingredients of this selection, but it would definitely be the perfect drunk food. I haven't tried the gyro sandwich from this restaurant, but based on the other reviews of it, I'm sure it would be great. We should have been in Breckenridge by 8 we didn't get here till 10PM! Almost alll the food places were closed. Empire burger was supposed to be open. They were closed. Got really lucky and talked to a guy in a parking lot at empire. He suggested above the blue and let me tell you I am so happy they did! The pita bread was so fresh and tasty! The meat was high quality and very tasty. Probably the best gyro I have ever eaten. Reddz been the spot for years, maybe the best late night food in all of CO. Always open late, the meatball and Philly hit the spot after drinking on the town. Considering the high prices of any ski town, including Breckenridge, this was a great spot to get some affordable, delicious, quality fast-food. Those who staff the joint are always friendly, always welcoming, fast and efficient. It might take some time to get the food, especially if there's a line, but it's well worth it! I loved this place! In Breck, some of the best stuff is found at a food kiosk. Not a huge menu, but a lot of different options. My husband and I got the gyros, and he piled so much delicious meat on it, and the ingredients were really fresh. My son had the meatball sub, which came with 3 really large meatballs. He opted to skip the roasted red peppers, but I thought that sounded pretty good. My daughter got a frito pie (chili poured into a bag of fritos) and thought it was delicious. Be transplanted to the Mediterranean? Whatever your cravings Red is way ahead of you! You must want to go to Reds to find Reds...it is tucked back at the end of the Main Street in Breck on the south side. So consider it a scavenger hunt for the best food you'll find after 1:00 A.M. or during the day. And....here's the best part...Locals call it Reds because there is an actual "Red" and he is always there in full ginger regalia.
