I went in for emergency care for a toothache in a molar when my regular dental office was often booked out and told me my insurance maxed out which I thought couldn't be correct as I didn't know dental insurance often had limits on what it will cover each year. Had to make multiple appointments and they were all close together. At Placerville Dental, the receptionist lady who handles billing told me that my insurance would fully cover it. A few months later, I received a surprise bill statement in the mail of nearly $1,000, apparently, I was lied to. I called asking why this happened. I was told it just took a while to verify with my insurance. Seems like a lame excuse. They said I had five cavities in my lower teeth. They numbed my entire lower jaw and did five fillings at once. Later, one of my premolars had a toothache. My regular dentist from Mather Field Dental recommended I get a root canal in that tooth and consult with an endodontist. The endodontist looked at my X-rays and said that the filling Placerville Dental placed in that tooth is right up against the nerve, irritating it. I got a root canal in the tooth that probably could have been avoided if the dentist at Placerville Dental did a better job. Placerville Dental did a cleaning and a non-surgical laser treatment in addition to a cleaning I got. As someone with health-related anxiety/OCD, this gave me the illusion that I was being given exceptional care. One of the times at Placerville Dental, when I expressed dental discomfort, the dentist dismissed me saying it was food on my teeth, which I did have as I didn't have time to brush my teeth properly beforehand. Yes, it's a good idea to clean your teeth right before dental appointments, but the dentist remarked that in such a way that it made me feel scolded. How rude. At one point, the dentist at Placerville Dental took X-rays and this time said the tooth with the toothache had irreversible pulpitis, but when I went to an emergency visit with my regular dentist, Dr. Tapang at Mather Field Dental, he took an X-ray and he also agreed that there was an infection in the tooth. He prescribed me a course of antibiotics and it made the toothache go away while Placerville Dental didn't do sh*t.

Was a nightmare trying to get work done. Which never happened. Filled out their form on first visit. Asked about medical issues. I had a medical issue that requires taking antibiotics before teeth are pulled. (Common & nothing out of the ordinary). Dentist asked if I had a current doctor. Told him no. He asked if he could just prescribe the antibiotics. I told him yes. I was told years ago to make dentists aware; and that's how they've always handled it. Proceeded with x-rays, exam. And then things got weird. Needed a lot of work. And it ALL (far as I can tell) had to be scheduled at other offices. Cleaning, deep cleaning, tooth extractions, fillings, crowns... not sure if any of it was going to be scheduled at this office. But they scheduled two starting appointments for me at two different offices in Folsom for that week. Showed up at first Folsom appointment. Tooth cleaning. Was in chair, ready to go. And they said the dentist put an order on my file that I couldn't get work done without getting clearance from my current physician. (Note: I did not have a current physician). So I also had to cancel the second appointment at the other office. (That the dentist - who put the hold on my work - had scheduled). And was told that if I canceled again, they wouldn't see me. So began the journey of getting a new physician. Getting medical/lab tests done since I was a new patient. And in the end, two months later, she just asked me, "So, do I just prescribe an antibiotic? What should I prescribe?"... and signed off the clearance note for the dentist. Where upon... The dentist office just happen to call me a few days later & asked if I had it. I told them yes. I would drop it off that week. And they told me no. I had to scan it and upload it into their system. I told them that I drove by their office almost daily, it would be far more convenient if I could just drop it off. (It was the same paper they handed me months prior in physical, hard copy, form). They said that their dentist needed to be able to read it before they could see me. So I couldn't drop it. I would have to scan and upload it. What the ?! Been close to a year and I still haven't seen a dentist. Far as I can tell, this place makes a living off billing insurance companies for exams and x-rays, and nothing more. I have no idea how to choose a dentist after that experience. And in the meantime, am still in need of dental care. And actually don't know if my insurance company will even pay for a whole new set of x-rays and exam elsewhere since all the work that was previously approved here was never completed. Stay away from this place. I've never seen anything like it.

Now I'm having to have multiple teeth replaced. It's one of the few things I'm ashamed of. He and his team have been nothing but understanding in how they've treated me, even with a messed up mouth. I had my first appointment today and from the friendly, knowledgeable and courteous staff at the front desk- to the actual dental team offering the 5 star care... it was a relief and a pleasure. The team at the front desk has been wonderful about reaching out and trying to get me in sooner than later. They have been flexible and on point with every action they have taken. The dental team was equally and more importantly knowledgeable - spoke to me in terms i could understand and reviewed my dental pictures, etc in detail. They were also great about providing options for teeth whitening when I inquired and I really feel like they cared about my needs. My husband had his first appointment and cleaning today as well and raved about the care he got once he was done. It's hard to find a dental team who really cares about you and shows it. One who works with you and really makes it about the customer and what is important. He chooses different foods for snacks, makes sure we brushes correctly and asks for help flossing. He had to get his first filling and they made him feel so comfortable, he did amazing! The cost is very reasonable compared to our last dentist. Wish we would have found her sooner. They recently moved from Diamond Springs to a bigger, nicer and more modern office in Placerville but the same kind, courteous and friendly professionalism remains. Our expectations for orthodontic care have been far exceeded by the staff and Dr. Proctor. The staff has been friendly and accommodating to our crazy schedules, and Dr. Proctor shows great attention to detail, which I believe is really important in regard to your smile!
