I don't get my hair cut professionally often. I think the last time was in 2014 or so. Usually I just trim my hair myself, which I know hairdressers probably cringe at. Anyway, I came here because I recalled coming to this location way back over 10 years ago to get a haircut due to a special and it was close to the house. They had good reviews and availability when I did. I had Ari lop off a good chunk of hair, about 10" to donate. Then she styled it based on my request which was something like a lob that I could put up as needed and was easy to style. I have a lot of volume and wavy/curly hair that has changed texture with pregnancy. She thinned it out some, cut it wonderfully, and I feel so much lighter! I never want to wash my hair after getting it cut because I don't put the effort into drying this mane of mine, but I suppose day 3 of a cut and wash I should probably go ahead and wash it myself. When I decide to cut my hair again I'll probably head back here if I don't do it myself. ;) read more

No, I didn't get my haircut here, my daughter got a chop. We watched the whole thing go down -- including more than a few pounds of blonde locks -- and couldn't have been happier with the experience. So no, this review doesn't concern any complicated, modern styling job, but as far as the basics go, we'll be back again. A couple notes. First, this used to be an Aveda salon, but that's no longer the case. (As a Minnesota native who grew up with the Aveda brand, I'll note I'm a big fan, and I never buy their product anymore, it's super pricey and I can make my own organic pomade, thanks very much.) They're carrying a new product line and I'm betting that'll save you plenty; our kid's cut was $25, just perfect, and well worth it. Second, great customer service. We called and had an appointment with one of their more experienced stylists less than two hours later; they were friendly at the front desk, accommodating -- they let her grandmother watch the entire cut, nerve wracking? nah! -- and we all complimented the final look. I really love this place, it is definitely worth the price you pay! The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming and they offer drinks while you wait in the lobby which is nice. The stylists all use great products that make your hair feel super smooth and healthy, I absolutely love it. You get a nice, relaxing shampoo and condition at the beginning of your treatment as well as a beautiful, sleek style at the end. I came to ABQ Hair Studio under the worst of circumstances, but the sweet and talented ladies here skillfully turned a disaster into a blessing. I originally came here with a half-finished hack-job after walking out in the middle of the worst haircut of my life (see my review for the HairCut Place). I was at such a low point that I could only hope for damage control. But my stylist, Brooklyn, grabbed control of the situation from the start. I am so glad she did! Brooklyn first compared my hair to the photo of the style I wanted, and then gave me three options of how we could try to achieve the look. Then, she started the haircut with a relaxing scalp massage. Finally, and most importantly, she assessed my mushroom cut only suited for a middle school boy in the early 90s and transformed it into a stylish asymmetrical pixie. She used special tools to add texture and volume to my hair, and recommended a few helpful styling products. She also instructed me on how to best comb and blowdry my new look in order to maximize texture and shape. Brooklyn was basically faced with the stylist's version of Top Chef. Can you make a cupcake using only lard, chili powder, and ground duck breast? I have no idea. But can you make a stylish pixie with long bangs when one side is hacked way too short and the back is partially shaved off? Why, yes! She can and she did! Let me start by saying "OMG, I'm in LOVE with my new haircut" I was extremely nervous about trying a new salon. I was religiously devoted to my girl Leila back in Brooklyn but due to the fact that I'm no longer in NY it was time to soar my wild oats and find someone new I thank my fellow Yelpers for the following positive notes because I have to agree with them %100. My appointment was with Sarah but I met with Brooklyn (how convenient for me) first. She made me feel welcomed. I showed Sarah a picture of exactly what I wanted, how I wanted it and PRESTO. A perfect pixie! Note: this is not a "Silver ladies/golden girls" type of salon. The girls are all young hip and tattooed (my kind of place)!!! The prices range from $35,$45,&$55 (based on the level of expertise). I heard a lot of good things, mostly from here, so i figured I'd try it out with my terribly ruined hair. They'd know what to do. And they kind of did. After talking for a long time about what I'd like to do with my hair, and my damage two beautiful salonist colored and cut my hair. We decided to go with red highlights with a base color of red. She explained to me the price would probably come out to 140, and that they base their coloring off how much they use and not necessarily how much hair you have. My hair is to my chin. The color came out A LOT darker than i wanted. Since we talked about me eventually going pink, and the highlights were barely visible. The color though, was really gorgeous in itself so i thought I might sport it. The woman who cut my hair was really nice and we looked at a number of google imaged of cuts that would work for my partially shaved head. When she cut my hair it felt amazing, but it was indeed a lot shorter than i wanted. She also mentioned how I would need to style my hair when i repeatedly told her how i like my hair wavy. Straightened it looks fine, but i feel i look older and momish while with wavy i feel better, but it looks bad and more asymmetrical than originally intended. So, all in all, they did what i asked. Everyone was very friendly. I got a hand massage, which was really awesome. I just did not like that i paid $100 for very few highlights and a base color with hair up to my chin, and $60 dollars for a haircut where she really only took off 1 1/2 to 2 inches. I've found wonderful salonists who charge half the price, and maybe even a 1/3. I ended up paying $180 because i wanted to give the salonist as much tip as i could. I chose this salon solely based on these reviews, here on Yelp-- and I'm SO glad I did!!! May hair was extremely long, and I had avoided getting it cut for a long time. I was a little nervous, because I wanted to try bangs, which I hadn't had since I was a little girl! Well, I cut off about 7-8 inches, and got perfect bangs-- not too thick and not too thin, at the perfect length. Danette gave me a perfect layered shoulder-length cut, and perfect bangs. As a newcomer in Albuquerque, one of the things I had no idea where to go was where to get my hair cut. This is the first place where I felt completely relaxed after I walked out. Jessi was my hair stylist, and started first with an amazing scented oil scalp massage, hair wash, cut, and a styled blow dry. During the entire time, she asked me questions to help me feel at ease and also made some recommendations during the process. What I wanted was a slight trim and polishing up while I was growing my hair out, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Pretty good! I came to this salon after my husband had gone to get a hair cut. His hair looked very good! I wanted to color my hair to cover my grays and get my bangs trimmed. I was greeted with their aveda yummy tea and promptly attended by my hair stylist who did exactly as I requested. I got my hair color matched to perfection and I was very pleased. She listened & just knew what to do to help lighten the weight of my super thick heavy hair. She's super sweet and totally gave me what I asked for FINALLY a stylist I can go back to. I've been a customer for almost 5 years and am now just rolling around to telling the world how much I like it. A little pricey, yes but Ima gonna tell you why you should come here to have your services done. (1) Everyone knows what the heck they are doing. You come in looking shaggy and whack, you leave looking polished. (2) They won't give you a style or color that is going to look bad on you. Their professional services are going to be displayed in full view on your head; they ain't going to screw it up. (3) Hand massage and herbal tea are free perks. (4) They are open seven days a week. You read that right, Every. Day. So if you have Sunday and Monday off from work, you can get your hair did. (5) They do a fabulous job on your eyebrows. Yes! (6) They can also tint your brows and lashes!! Double yes!! This is the ultimate in low-maintenance. Cause sometimes you gotta do high maintenance to be low maintenance. (7) In a rush? You can get a mani-pedi at the same time. Granted the Hair Studio does not have pedi massage chairs, but they do a good job. (8) Cleanliness. The bathrooms are clean, the salon is clean, the staff is clean. (9) They are organized! They make your appointments and send you a text. The receptionists remember your name and your services. (10) The stylists keep up on latest trends and products. Once a week the salon closes early so that they can practice on each other. They routinely have learning sessions with other salons. You don't want tired looking hair, and they don't want your hair to be tired. These people want you to look and feel your best. I have mixed feelings about this place... I got my haircut there a few weeks ago and was very happy with it. So I purchased a groupon for a mani/pedi. The lady who worked on my nails was probably one of the nicest and most personable people I've ever met. But.....I hate to say that this was absolutely the worst pedi/mani I've ever gotten. It was a 40$ groupon for a 95$ service....if I would have been charged 95$ for this sad excuse for a pedi/mani I would have been very upset!!! There is still some of my old polish on my nails, new polish ALL over my fingers and toes, my nails are bumpy like the Polish was old, the massage was less than 5 minutes, AND they charged for removing my old gel!!! I asked for gel and that was extra, but then when I saw how crappy my toes were I just got regular polish because there was no way I was paying more and I didn't want a crappy gel job to be stuck with. The ladies at the front desk have been rude to me as well...someone named kailey in particular. She has no customer service skills and has no business interacting with people. I was about 5 mins late and they called me with attitude to ask if I was still coming. They also send you about 5 text messages and call you a few times to remind you of your appointment. Jesse my hair dresser was recommended to me to be the best. well they lied. She cut my hair horribly. The blow out was even worse. I didn't recognize myself. When I told the salon before paying that I was very unhappy with the results they said they would have me talk to a different hair specialist in the salon she came over said she would be right back and an hour later I was still waiting she left the salon and never appeared again. Finally Brandy who did my toes ( very nicely) volunteered to help me out and tried to reshape what damage was done by Jesse Brandy cut my husbands hair and did a nice job Use Brandy she is nice and knows how to cut hair. My color is great. My cut is growing out nicely. It was sort of a weird setting. Super spendy. But the "hand massage" while I was waiting for my hair to process was a nice touch. I bought a group on for 3 facials and I would not recommend this studio, nor will I go back . The lady, although she was sweet, was not experienced and lacked confidence. In fact, I dont think she is an esthetician as she was cutting hair when I arrived When she asked me what my concerns were I told her I was concerned about some white heads and she informed me that she didnt have any lancets. I asked why she replied they had not ordered any. As a professional esthetician and salon owner, I would not promote facials without a magnifying lamp, lancets and a steamer. I purchased a groupon for two manis/pedis the woman that did the work was personable, but this is a mani/pedi my grand kids could have done. I'm returning today to have them fix the polish, the polish is spread all over the cuticles, I'm convinced the polish is old...it's bumpy..lumpy and looks horrible. NEVER AGAIN!!! I wish I could post a picture of my manicure but especially the pedicure, it would save others from spending $$$ here unnecessarily. I'm going to try to get my $$$ back from groupon for the next one. I booked two appointments with Melissa and when my daughter arrived for her appt, she was told Melissa was out and Amy would be her hairdresser. AMY butchered my daughter's hair, has no idea what a "layer & face frame"means and is rude and won't spend more than 12 minutes on your hair!! My daughter nor I have EVER HAD SUCH A HORRIBLE HAIRCUT, EVER!! Then they want to offer "hair enhancement" LMAO, like you're gonna trust them to touch your hair AGAIN!! After moving to Albuquerque I had a hard time finding a hair stylist and hair salon. I finally gave ABQ Hair a try because it is close to my house and an Aveda salon. (I've used Aveda products for a very long time and love them). Brandi cut my pixie in a really cute style, hid my grey, and gave me pretty highlights too.
