To start, the host was surly when he tried to seat my wife and I at a 6 seat table. We asked for a smaller, 2 to 4 seat table and he grudgingly complied. Second, the salsa trio was spicy, no taste and bland. The chips had no flavor either. Third, we asked for NO pico de gallo and EXTRA quac. We received extra pico with a regular serving of quac. Fourth, we ordered the chicken, shrimp and beef fajitas. Just one serving for the both of us. We received only three fajitas. Fifth, the steak was tough to chew. Went to dinner on Saturday evening! We were sat immediately in the bar area and Jolene was our waitress! She did a great job! The fajitas came out quickly and the sopas potatoes instead of rice was amazing! The only issue I had was we needed extra flour tortillas they only give you 3! Well they charged a 1.59 for that! That is totally ridiculous to charge for flour tortillas! They are cheap and makes y'all look cheap! The queso was wonderful! I'm sure we will go back however it doesn't sit right with me about the tortillas when literally no one else does this and that will factor into my dinner decision on the weekends! We had a group of about 15 people. We visited during happy hour. The prices were very reasonable and service was great. The star of the show was the Chili Relleno that I had for dinner. I've been a lifelong fan of this popular Mexican entree. This was one of the best I've had in a while. Crispy exterior with a shredded beef filling and smother with a cheese sauce. The Anaheim pepper was a great addition to the entree as it provides a little more heat than the typical poblano pepper. Tried delivery after a tough day of yard work. We have dined in before with no big issues. Today the meals arrived and the food was terrible. Like it was old food. Meals were stuck to the cardboard containers like they were microwaved double time. Taco was soggy, chips were STALE. Beans were salted down very badly. The only thing was good was a dab of guac that came with one of the meals. I called the manager to ask for a courtesy discount on spending $70.00 for 2 people, including a decent tip for the driver. I felt like they took too much of our $$ for nothing. The only thing they would do is comp me a small amount of food on my next order, If I signed up for their rewards. I already had to sign up for Ollo to get it delivered. I did not want to buy more old food from them. Then they suggested I come up there and they would make fresh food for us. We had a great time at Abuelo's as we always do. There's something about Abuelo's, it's just not your typical Tex-Mex place to enjoy this type of food. The atmosphere and decor just lets you know that the food and waitstaff is going to different every time you come in. The menu had an insert with a special seasonal menu which my waitress let me know that if you have something you want in mind, just describe it and the chef can probably make it happen! We ordered steak enchiladas, steak fajitas and chicken chimichanga tonight. All of them were generous portions so we took some home of course for tomorrow's lunch. On April 5 Easter Sunday at approximately with my family, what was meant to be a bonding kind of Sunday turned into a disaster. First i called this location to make a reservation as it states to do on their website. I was then informed by a waitress that answered it's 18% gratuity which I was ok with as we had a large party. Just for them to tell me, "well it's first come first serve"... which is odd because why have the option online for a reservation if you're not doing that...Anyhow they then call me back and say, "ok we have a table" which was a bit strange too but nonetheless we went. The food was Tex Mex for sure if you're going for delicious food this is not the place to go to it tasted pretty bad and was kind of flavorless. Anyhow, the wait was extremely long. The waitress was informed if we could get some jalapeños. Then, nothing was brought and she was later informed again. Next thing ya know the manager comes out stating that a man in our party was rude to the waitress and did something to offend her. Which none of us that were present saw happen. So he was falsely accused which could be considered defamation of character. I would suggest next time checking the cameras before attacking someone and considering he has been a waiter before in his past he got even more offended by the false accusations. To be honest who wouldn't get upset over being falsely accused? The jalapeños were then brought out when they were no longer needed considering my father had already finished eating. We then went to take a picture because apparently the only thing that was actually good about this restaurant was the look. Next thing you know I see and hear a lot of young male waiters bickering and yelling. As a former officer that has worked with criminals this reminded me of my past job in jail. I tried to understand how is this place even running letting waiters yell at customers I'm not even sure what they were saying as I'm so used to closing out the yelling as I did in my previous job. After opening everything I saw that one of the hot sauce containers was open and dumped the entire contents in the sack. My friend had nachos & I had enchiladas. My enchiladas were great but the chicken fajita nachos were horrible! It looked like a melted cheese pizza with tiny pieces of diced chicken dumped in a couple places. My friend was angry didn't even eat it and I don't blame her. This was charged as Grand Fajita Nachos at just under $19.00. I called them to asked if they could do something. We came her for date night and it was super yummy. Arlington has sooooo many Mexican restaurants to choose from but we chose to visit here because it was right off the highway and one of the few places that did not have a wait (even though they had a packed house full of customers). We were seated immediately and the waitress was super friendly. One thing that stood out with this restaurant was that they serve chips and salsa before your meal, and the chips are served with THREE different types of salsas. Yum yum yum!!!! Drinks were also delicious. I recommend the sangria or the El Jeffe. Portions are large so I recommend sharing or prepare to take home some to eat for later. Either way... win win. read more

I was running errands in the area and my work phone started blowing up. It was hot, I was annoyed, and figured I would pop in here to check my phone and try out their happy hour. They only do HH specials in the bar and on the patio, so I took a side booth so I could pull out my phones. As soon as I sat down, I felt better. It is already 100 in Texas and the ac felt so refreshing. It looked like the bartender was running the show and she was on TOP of it. It wasn't super busy yet, but she was taking orders, running food, and keeping everyone in cold beverages. She was also clearing the tables and could have used a hand with that. All the while, she was smiling and hustling. I ordered a margarita and the queso diablo. I didn't read the description of the queso, but I was expecting it to be spicy. It is very mild, the salsa has more kick, but it was tasty. It was like chili con carne, with queso, topped by cholula and some queso fresco. The margarita is a mix but it was balanced well. I was there long enough to ruin my dinner, answer my work obligations, and cool off. It was the perfect little pop in, and I definitely left better than I went in. I haven't eaten at an Abuelos in years, but I will be back. The HH price was $5 for the margarita and $5 for the queso. You really can't beat that. read more

We have been at night during the weekend and the have a pretty long wait. But that means they are good and people will wait for the food. I have tried most of the food here the tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, all very good. You get warm thin corn chips and salsa with your meal and you get 3 different types of salsa. I like the salsa it is very tasty salsa. We usually get a very large platter it is the combo meal that has everything. It is called The Grande it is way too much food but it is so good. We seem to always get the Grande. Abuelo's has a bunch of specialty meals on the menu as well if you want to try them or just stick with the Grande. I almost forgot the Chili Rellenos stuffed with cheese are the best around. For drinks they have a full bar very good margaritas, and the Sangria is very good. read more

The loss of star is a reflection of management. I'd drop it to 3 stars, but the service my waiter provided was great. I had just left from shopping at the mall and hadn't eaten all day. Upon arriving I was seated immediately and tended to. I received my drink, chips & salsa as well as my food, quite quickly. I was enjoying myself. Then I noticed the manger watching me. He began to stand in between the door and I. He eventually came closer, hovering near my table to make his presence know. Initially I didn't think anything of it. Last night was my last visit to Abuelos on I20. This is unfortunate because this is my brother's favorite Mexican restaurant, and I have been going there with no issues for more than a decade. We arrived just before 6 pm and were seated immediately. The server took our drink orders. I ordered a house Margarita as he said that it would less expensive since it was still happy hour. All was going well until the server returned and said I couldn't get the drink as the happy was over by the time he entered the order. I looked at my watch and showed it to the server after we had discussed the problem. It still said 6:01. I asked to speak to his manager supervisor and much to my surprise, she agreed with the server that they could not uphold their offer of a "not so happy" hour margarita. We don't have one near us (down by Waco), so we try to go to places we don't have ready access to. We've eaten here several times, and the food is always good. Not typical Tex-Mex, but the food has distinctive tastes and a different character. A little pricier than the typical Tex-Mex, also, but hey, sometimes you want something special. My friend and I met here and were quickly welcomed and whisked off to a table in the bar area. We were brought their chips and a trio of salsa. The salsa were mild red, a pineapple and verde, and a spicy red. The spicy and mild were absolutely delicious! The pineapple and verde took some getting used to, but it was okay. My enchiladas were so warm and just amazing. I am so glad that I took Holly's recommendations and got them as I was originally going to get a salad. Both had tons of flavor and just enough spice to give my nose a little tingle.
