Ridiculous amount of rice left over
    Calder S.

Abunai seemed like a good value for the price, but not when you see how much rice they use as filler. The food was good and would be 4 stars if they balanced out the toppings and rice. I ordered through Grubhub and picked up in person. Pleasantly, the prices on the Abunai website are the same as on Grubhub. I got two build-you-own bowls. Abunai offers two sizes: small (16oz, $8) and regular (32oz, $10) and a selection of bases, proteins, veggies, sauces, and toppings. It's not clear what you are getting more of for the regular bowl; you would think more toppings, but it just felt like more rice. I ordered two regular bowls, both with two bases (sushi rice and spring salad mix), one with ahi tuna (+$3) and one with salmon (+$3), and various other free toppings like cucumbers, onion, carrots, seaweed, edamame, etc. When I got the bowls, they were hefty and looked great with all the toppings. The color, flavors, and freshness of the toppings were all good. The problem was in the base. The bases were not half-and-half, as you would expect; they were 90% rice with a small amount of salad. It was truly a ridiculous amount of rice. Eating normally, you would finish all your toppings and have half the rice left over; we did.

This was good, but definitely a bit pricey for how much rice they use as filler. However, I will say I ordered a small bowl and it was veryyyyy filling so I only ate half. I did have to ask for extra sauce so would love if they added more to the bowls. We popped in so I could grab a small bowlof sushi rice, marinated shrimp, crab salad, seaweed salad, masago, radish, edamame, and wasabi aioli and my fiance had their large bowl with two scoops of ahi tuna (which had such great flavor!!) I also love love love spam musubi so grabbed a serving of 4 I think it would be a good addition for them to offer just buying a single or two musubi at a time.

We've been patiently waiting for this new spot to open, so this Friday when we weren't quite sure what to eat for a late lunch... this place was our answer! The place was clean, mostly quiet during our visit with a few customers coming and going. The young lady working the front of the store had her back turned tending to a matter on her phone so we weren't greeted. After awhile of checking out the menu to place an order on their mobile order stand, I called out 3 times to the young lady for help--I needed to know more about some of the menu items. She continued tending to her personal matter but once we finally got her to respond, she couldn't tell us about the menu items--explain the ingredients nor flavor--and grabbed Alison from the back. Alison came and saved the day. Not only was she friendly, she excitedly answered my questions and helped us place our first order--we'd never been to any of the locations. As a spam loving girlie pop I had to get the slam musubi--you can choose between Abunai or Katsu musubi--Alison suggested we get a mix and so that's what we did. They were large and in charge, deliciously wrapped tight and perfect with the kabayaki sauce. As for bowls, we got the Terri and Abunai. We enjoyed the bowls quite much except there is so much rice. Like 90% rice, all of the yummy components are skimp so that was disappointing. Nonetheless you'll have plenty of rice to make some fried rice the next day should you like. Their menu is pretty versatile so we'll come back to try a few other things.

The Spam Mac Sundae was the highlight of my visit to Abunai. With a layer of furikake-topped macaroni salad above chicken Katsu and rice, this $10 order gives you the best offerings in one cup. I also got a build-your-own poke bowl with salmon and ahi. I wish there were more options like mango and pineapple and the rice looked a bit more mushy than normal (although less noticeable as I ate it) but I found the bowl as a solid meal.

I live super close to this place, so I decided to make a visit during their Happy Hour slot. I had the toko poke bowl and tuna + krab hand rolls. Didn't love for the happy hour that we had to order from the electronic board and couldn't modify our orders. I was also bummed they didn't have sushi rice. However, for the specials and value, they were solid choices. Every single time I walked past this place, it seems like they're understaffed. I felt bad for the employee who had to prepare my food + prepare my order alone. Because of this, the service took longer than expected. Indoors, Abunai has plenty of seating. However, other than the sole employee, no one else was dining in. It made things feel a little ominous. A random note that I appreciated was that they use compostable bowls and utensils, which is a nice touch. Overall, this spot feels like a great addition to the Union Market area.

Attended soft opening. Cute location located off the beaten path in Union market. Ordered the spam platter, fries and chicken katsu and macaroni salad. Service was quick. I would skip the fries next time, but definitely excited to try other menu items.
