Last night, while shopping at this location, my wife lost an antique pearl earring that had belonged to her grandmother. She didn't discover that it was missing until she got home - and, by then, the store had closed. I was at the store when it opened this morning and Scott, the manager, could not have been more helpful. He and I searched for the earring for about 20 minutes and he found it! Scott went "above and beyond" to help us find a lost item that had tremendous sentimental value. This guy deserves a raise and a promotion! read more

I had a hard time finding where they were but eventually I eventually found a roaming employee that knew where and what I was looking for(the 2 others i found were no help at all). They had very little selection and the mens/women's were mixed together so I needed to go through all to find the few women's ones iny size. But did find a pair that fit and I liked. I was so happy to find all what I needed and more at Academy. Plano store is my local spot and I like knowing that they can have what I need when I need it! I guess I really get to be proud to support our community and economy by shopping here. It's easy to see why this store is Essential. We get all types of necessary supplies here. Guns, ammo, dog supplies, camping supplies, clothes,sports, and even my favorite Trappers peppered beef jerky. I know that it was great to see Covid-19 precautions in play. We were able to buy masks and hand sanitizer too!! I thought for a while that they were only curbside during the pandemic but the gentleman said on the phone "Ma'am, we were never closed, because we are essential." Came here yesterday looking for a solid pair of running shoes. As we were browsing the aisles, we were promptly greeted by a friendly employee, George -- who asked if he could help us find a particular shoe. I was actually looking for ASICS, but for whatever reason, every single model I tried on (I am usually an 8.5 but sized up a half size to a 9), the toe box and the material was extremely narrow and constricted. None of them fit correctly or comfortably. I have always trusted ASICS in the past, so it was disappointing. Defeated, I reluctantly made my way to other brands. I stumbled upon some Brooks that were on display. George suggested that I consider purchasing the Ghost 11 model, since it is the most comfortable and lightweight footwear he sells. He was right! I didn't even have to break them in. No blisters. No hip or knee pain. No shin splints. These shoes feel like you are walking/running on a cloud. Expensive? Yes. $119.99 per pair. Worth it? She has this arrogant attitude, like she's a combat vet or something, and instead of being helpful, she'll roll her eyes at you and mutter things under her breath. How hard is to teach your cashiers to look up periodically and check just how many people are waiting in line??? If you see 3 or more customers in line (in this case... 6!) pick up the phone beside your register and CALL FOR ANOTHER CASHIER TO HELP YOU!!! News Flash for your managers!!! You sell stuff to MAKE MONEY so you can stay open! If you do not check people out, you CAN'T GET THEIR MONEY!!!! Try and explain that concept to your cashiers and give a cookie to the ones who get it! I guess the message that management is sending here is this: "Academy really doesn't want your business OR YOUR MONEY!" If you want an item, simply buy it on the Internet. It will take a few days to have it delivered, which is about the same amount of time you will spend waiting in line to be checked out at Academy! PS. No wonder the Sports Authority is going out of business. They carry the best selection of high quality smokers and charcoal grills I've found in Dallas. Believe me, I've looked everywhere. They have the quarter inch thick steel ones here in all kinds of configurations. My only complaint is that on more than one occasion the wait in shoes is long... The difference between the Men's section and Women's section for athletic wear in variety and size is disrespectful. The women's section has taken over most of what the men's section use to be. Came here in January looking for rain/wind gear; I found ONE Nike jacket that was meant for running in the rain/wind, it was an XXL (I wear a medium, along with many other serious active people). Customer service was terrible. I stood around in the Men's section looking for someone to help me for 10 minutes. Finally after finding someone to help me find if they had a different size in a certain jacket, he simply replied, "We probably don't have it." PROBABLY!? If only there were some way to check how many of something are left in the store--INVENTORY; a system that lets you know how much merchandise is actually in the store. Cheap guns, cheap ammo. Honestly. I use a site called Wikiarms for looking at prices of ammunition and weapons, and I can compare the price per round. Now, normally online areas are cheaper. However, sometimes there's tax (if in Texas), and there's shipping costs. This makes the prices of ammo online and local very close. Academy usually pops up as the first local store to offer cheaper ammunition. Granted, it's not a huge selection like Cabela's, but it's good enough. The guns are usually cheaper as well compared to other stores. The man behind the gun counter is awesome, helps very well, and I'm out of the store in less than 30 minutes with a new firearm. read more

Well I have given this location multiple tries. Today I was looking for some new Nike Running shoes. Let me start with the customer service. It was terrible. There were multiple associates in the store and not one of them asked me if I needed help nor acknowledge me. They were all too busy taking down signage and pricing. Cleanliness: Also not good. The shoe department gets worse every time I come back. The styles are all mixed up. The display is not even close to where the actual shoe is located. I was is the store early morning it should be recovered better than this. You would think a "brick and mortar" store would fight for every customer with great service. No wonder Amazon is taking over retailers. Why would we drive to a location just to experience terrible service? I can get my shoes in two days with a simple click on the computer. Worst gun counter in the entire DFW metroplex. Rudest, most know it all (they know very little about anything firearms related) Illogical NICS delay policy. They will not release the firearm until they receive a call back (with a proceed) from the Feds which doesn't always happen. Super high prices, the old guy with white hair is both uneducated (when it comes to firearms and their appropriate applications) and straight up rude. The manager apologized for both that guy and his dull little lacky who was similar attitude wise, but even that can't justify this place's prices. Charging these kind of prices isn't acceptable just because your store is in a high income neighborhood. read more

Omg. They really outdid themselves this time. As everyone knows, there is a current ammo shortage so ammo is a very precious commodity right now. They keep very popular calibers behind the counter & limit your purchase to 2 boxes per customer. So, when I asked if their cheap store brand "Monarch" ammo uses copper plated steel bullets that will ruin the rifling in your gun's barrel, the store clerk took out a knife and cut a bullet in half to satisfy my curiosity. I offered to buy the box he cut but he said, "don't worry, I'll buy this box for myself. You can buy a good box that is unopened." I was shocked. I have never gotten better customer service at any other sporting goods store in my life. Most independent sporting goods businesses are run as hobbies, not businesses. If they like you, you'll get great customer service. If they don't like you for whatever reason (wrong race, sex, political association, etc), they'll give you a hard time just for kicks. However, academy's is run as a business. They will treat you right regardless of race, political association, or sex. Their ammo prices are also the lowest in town. Some local gun stores have price gouged during the shortage. I have a long memory. They are NOT getting my business back. Academy's has won me over as a loyal customer for life. BTW, their Monarch brand brass cased soft point ammo is quality stuff. It works great and will not ruin the rifling in your gun. All the negative internet reviews are for the Monarch steel cased ammo used in non-ak guns. Steel case works fine for the ak, but just not for other types of guns. read more

This is the Best Academy Sports I have visited. The atmosphere are fantastic and the employees very friendly. I was greeted and offered help from many hard working people. My register experience was awesome! My cashier Armando is a very nice person, attentive, and does his job with excellence! He is very productive and our conversation was friendly and very informative. Armando helped explained the use of a product extremely well and he also offered for me to take a survey for a chance to win. We need more fantastic employees like that in every store we visit. Had to duck into Academy to get a bike for the littlest member of the family. Don't remember the name, but the associate who helped us pick one out was extremely accommodating. May have been the manager since he was neither a teen nor a slacker. But he went out of his way to pull down bike after bike to check them out and let the little one decide which one they wanted. Then he immediately directed us to the bike safety aisle nearby. What a chum. I was a bit taken by surprise since I've gotten used to the "self service" policy of a lot of big box type stores.
