Nice little corner spot in downtown SD! If you're running on fumes and need a pick-me-up, Achilles is a good spot to go to. Employees here are courteous and quick to get your order. It's small inside so we were asked to wait outside until our beverages were completed. There are a few tables outside and I sat out while waiting for my iced matcha tea latte. First timer at Achilles coffee and it was great! The only downside is that there's only metered street parking available on one-way streets nearby but it's in downtown so what else can you expect. I was mentally prepared for long lines here, but there was not a line at all. It was unexpectedly dead. We weren't able to find a parking spot on the same corner or on the same block though. The staff is great, lines are not long. You will need to pay for parking (Monday through Saturdays from 7am-6pm; free Sundays typically). There is not immediate parking so you will need to walk. I got the Cinnamon Pancakes ($12) , Acai ($11), and Ube Latte ($8). The taste of the food is average not did not stand out. They were okay, not bad or good. I do want to advise they are on the pricier side of food. Probably because they are in a hot spot and rent can drive up the cost. The store front is a nice, quaint shop with tables outside (capacity around 12 people) and inside (capacity around 15 people). It is very clean, there is a bathroom for customers. it is a small shop, meant for just a pick up but there are small nooks you can sit if you wanted to. For the price - I don't think it was the best. The taste value was average. The service was quick and the ambiance normal - simple. IF you are a coffee lover, it is worth a try for the coffee. But the food, you are better off venturing into a breakfast resturant which Downtown is littered with. read more

My family & I spent the day in San Diego, and decided to check out Achilles Coffee; as it was recommended by my niece. Busy, is an understatement. This place was so packed, & understandably so. It's a cute little coffee shop with minimal indoor seating, but plenty of outdoor space. Clean, well lit, plenty of counter space to pick up orders. The staff was friendly, quick, and the busyness of the shop didn't deter their "local coffee shop" kindness. The coffee was on point. I tried the Honey-Cinnamon Latte; delish. Had a mini trip for the weekend and the hotel food was expensive and bleh. Discovered door dash delivers to hotels so I pretty much got to experience good food nearby within my hotel area *extra brownie points* Achilles' cold brews are amazing! It was so good I had to order it again for the drive back home when we checked out of our hotel. Hubs ordered the Finest City Cold Brew and he enjoyed it a lot. I ordered the Single Origin Cold Brew and added cinnamon and vanilla syrup to it. The cold brew was rich and kept me energized for my day! The Cove: your salmon lox bagel. I asked for everything to be separated so I can assemble it and they did just that! They aren't skimpy on their salmon or the toppings that come with it Hillcrest: this is a hearty and filling breakfast sandwich. Perfect sharing size if you're looking for a lighter but filling breakfast or if you're trying to load up for the day, it's a good size for one person. read more

Achilles is a small coffee spot located at the bottom of the Rey apartment building. They have a small outdoor patio seating area, which is a nice chill spot to sit down and enjoy your coffee as long as there is no construction happening next door. We got a regular cappuccino - coffee flavor was well balanced, nice richness with whatever bean they are using. We also got a "concoction" (I wish more places would call their mixed drinks, concoctions). We chose America's Finest City, which was essentially a large iced coffee with vanilla and cinnamon. I recently paid a visit to the original and first Achilles Coffee Roaster. It has been a few years since I've been here, and I was certainly pleased with not only the improvement of the coffee, but the service and availability of more products. I had the Pecan Caramel Latte and the Avocado Toast. The latte was nice. I thought the pecan flavor was subtle but present, and the caramel flavor was quite minimal. The espresso itself in the latte was good. It was smooth and offered a good mildly robust flavor. The avocado toast was good too. I do recommend that they keep an eye on the avocado mixture, before they apply it to the toast, because there were some brown areas on the avocado spread. Other that that, the toast was properly toasted and had good texture, the tomatoes were fresh but could of used a little seasoning, and the smashed avocado was tasty. I like that they have more seating available and a larger menu. The two young men working the shop the Sunday morning I visited were friendly. read more

Yummm! So freakin good. Our hotel was literally right across the street and my friends and I went here almost every morning. I got the iced honey cinnamon latte and it was literal perfection! Subtle notes of honey and cinnamon, it wasn't overbearing at all. The espresso they used was amazing quality. I was bummed that I forgot to pick up a bag of coffee on my last day! After those late nights, early morning shenanigans this iced coffee was much needed. We got back to our room at 2am and wasn't looking forward to our hotel check out. Called the front desk of our hotel and asked for late check out. After checking out we said let's grab coffee at this wonderful place we saw while walking. They had some amazing coffee to offer. I ordered the vanilla cinnamon latte with oat milk, my friends ordered the vanilla latte with oat milk and the caramel latte with 2%. They are such basic drink with so much flavoring. The Barista was very nice and offered different ranges of what her favorite was, to what the average person gets. Good luck with parking, and restrooms. It's unfortunate that they don't offers it. I came here multiple days in a row, and it was consistently great service and fantastic coffee. We would be back very often to get fresh coffee and awesome breakfast sandwiches. The beans they sold there were roasted within the week, with roast date written on the bottom of the bags. The one oddity was that they put ice in the nitro cold brew, but what can you do? Ok very much YES. As a coffee shop freak I like to note a few things. Obviously the drinks, the selection of alternative milks, the service, the potential food options, and of course the vibe. Usually when people offer me a large size latte I feel like I'm at a dunkin donuts, but this place you should just go ahead and get the biggest size because their coffee is bangin. I didn't see exactly which oat milk they used but it was a good one not one of the "pacific" crap kinds so that adds to the experience. The patio was a nice way to just relax with the cup and we also got a couple of pastries. They had a good selection of pastries and other refrigerated drinks/snacks. I came here hoping to try one of the breakfast sandwiches and have one of the coldbrew concoctions I had heard about, however I was sorely disappointed both by my inability to actually order a sandwich, and the letdown of paying $5 for an average coffee that was poorly mixed and filled with too much granulated brown sugar. I arrived here around 6:30 and tried to order a breakfast sandwich, only to be told with pure contempt by the employee behind the counter that the kitchen doesn't open till 7am and the cook wasn't there. Granted it is not posted anywhere that the kitchen doesn't open till 7am...not online, not even on their menu in the actual shop. So I stood there, contemplating whether I should even order anything, but ultimately decided to order a cold Aztec and a chocolate croissant. The Aztec came with the most lackluster of announcements from the staff, "hey, your coffee is done"(the staff this early in the morning looked like they needed to make themselves some coffee to perk up). The coffee wasn't the worst I have ever had, but for $5 I was disappointed with how grainy it was and the flavor was kinda bland; it just didn't do it for me. For all the fancy ingrediants and roasts, it just wasn't impressive. Now I'm no hipster, so maybe I just can't comprehend the magnificent flavors, ingredients and effort that went into concocting such a masterpiece, but I was decidedly underwhelmed. The croissant was even worse, and must have been left out from the day before as it was stale, hard, and disappointing. It wasn't even worth finishing. Really you're everyday corner coffee shop. The staff were super friendly and are implementing the covid regulations for sure. You can walk in order and wait outside. There are some seats out there so its pretty cool. They specialize in pour over coffee so I highly recommend to step out of the normal and try something different. GOOD STUFF I'm not a coffee connoisseur but those who claim to be tend to follow my lead. Living in coffee cities such as Seattle and SF, finding good espresso in SD has been.... challenging. This place would be my my second favorite place in this city for a good roasted bean. And very comparable to my local top place (Cafe Moto). If you are looking for a stronger bean with a deep flavor profile and very light notes of acidity, this bean might be for you. I'm about the smooth rounded bean minus any fruit or acidic notes but I was able to take this in just fine. HOT COCOA - hands down to their hot cocoa, one of my favs in this city. Creamy and smooth. VANILLA (decaf) LATTE - loves how my vanilla were true vanilla bean extracts, you can see the tiny black extracts at the bottom of the latte. Again, good bean although decaf it was mildly bold. After grabbing some food at Cocina 35, I decided I needed some coffee, so I went for this place just up the hill. I grabbed myself a pumpkin cold brew. The drink was just what I needed for a perfect pick me up post-meal. The place was really cute - they even had their own roastery and a ton of seating where it looked like a ton of people were working out of. My only downfall is the customer service. Perfect little coffee shop tucked away in Cortez Hill. They have all the yummy lattes and exotic drip coffee options, as well as plenty of non-dairy milk options (Oat milk being my personal fave). Staff is super friendly, and LOVES dogs. My dog actually can't walk by Achilles without trying to pull me inside because she thinks she's going to get a treat from them. When in SD for work, I stop by here daily. I absolutely love the coffee and the sandwiches and it's convenient to my office. The maple pecan latte is among my favorites.
