I always always come here when I'm in the area, which is so stubborn of me with all the great places to try in Santa Clara. AND I get the exact same thing every time - falafel plate with all the goodies (except olives...it's love/hate). It's hard to pinpoint what it is about this place, because so many Mediterranean restaurants serve the same dishes. I think it's the sauces to be honest. The falafels are stellar, but I drench them in hummus or babaganoush and it is *elevated* x1000. I really should branch out to try other menu items because I know I'll find new favorites, but I already know I'll be coming here for the rest of my life so what's the rush. Let me start by saying the owner Di needs to be protected at all costs!!! This was our very first time here and he made us feel so welcomed. It was some of the BEST customer service we have ever recieved in a long time. It felt so genuine when he was talking to us and he seemed like he loved his job. My fiance and I stopped by to grab a quick lunch from this place and it was our first time. I already grabbed lunch from a different restaurant beforehand but my fiance ended up getting the Beef Gyro wrap and I got their rose chocolate hazelnut Turkish delight. The wrap portions was generously filled with meat and My fiance ended up eating his entire wrap in 5 minutes. I've only had a few Turkish delight and this one is 100% my favorite! . Di even gave us some free falafels for our first time being there and these falafels were so so so good and fresh, some of the best we've ever had!!! After the phenomenal customer service we received I honestly wanted to buy food as well! Need less to say we will be coming back as regulars to this place! Counter service you order and the make it for you right then. Staff super friendly and kind as I stumbled my way through the decisions of what I wanted in my sandwich. When we went to pick out desserts they realized it was our first time here and they gave us dolmas on the house. The food: it's so good the Achilles chicken is Smokey and the pita is fresh I'm pretty sure the guy cutting it open making my sandwich is burning his hand as the steam is coming out of it, and they stuff the pocket with all the goodies you asked for. The food here is delicious! We had the Achilles chicken plate with all the fixings, the waffle fries, a side of falafels, and the baklava. Everything was great. This is authentic Middle Eastern food, and made with love. We took our food to go since there is no indoor seating, and since the portions are pretty generous shared with friends. Great portions, fresh ingredients, and friendly service. Falafels are heart shaped and they make them to order, so always fresh and hot. They give really good portions for the veggies and have a good selection. They're able to give extras on certain veggies as well. The achilles sauce is my favorite and is standard garlic/yogurt sauce, although it's more of a paste. Only wish they gave a few more falafel with the combo but other than that, filling and will return! read more

Sheesh :/ Ate outside on the patio which faces a fairly busy street. We ordered waffle fries at the beginning of the line but the staff member failed to let the person at the end of the line who did the check out know. So we waited almost ten min or so for that to come out while our plates were sitting there. Docking one star for that alone. Besides that, staff was friendly and food was yummy. The combo plate with the chicken shawarma and gyro beef is my go-to. All the sides you get in the bowl contribute to a taste that combines texture, freshness, and richness into an amalgamation of deliciousness. Even the cute heart shaped falafels taste amazing! The workers here are so friendly and nice! No matter who is serving, they are serving with a smile and a heap of food. Oh no! I am so sad to update this, but things have seriously done down hill. They are cutting corners now and the food isn't as great. For example, they now have iceberg instead of romaine for the salad, the veggie options are really just four things, and the sauces aren't as good as they used to be. Achilles had been on my wishlist ever since I moved to Santa Clara, and I finally tried the eatery. The establishment was closed for dine-in so I ordered take-out. The options are not overwhelming so it's easy to pick a dish + sides. I ordered the shawarma plate + waffle fries and the infamous heart-shaped falafel. The shawarma meat was juicy and well flavored. They give you the option to get multiple toppings but I stuck to the basics - tzaziki, hummus, cucumbers etc. The fries and falafel were made fresh and complimented the meal overall. The customer service was nice, which made the takeout experience wholesome. The plaza is small so parking may be tricky during rush hours but not too much of a hassle. Always a joy visiting this establishment, it's about time I attempt to return their kindness with a review! As you walk through the door, you will be greeted by not one, but perhaps two or three friendly people behind the counter willing to help you with your order. I always go for the falafel or chicken Shawarma plate. When you order the falafel plate, they fry the falafels fresh to-order and the falafel's will be heart-shaped! The plate will include rice or salad, or half-and-half as well as two sauces. I have tried all of their toppings & sauces and you will never go wrong with the Achilles house special sauce and the baba ghanoush (this has an amazing smokey flavor), my favorites. I also enjoy their wrap option as well if you are on the go! Wow we're so BLESSED with delicious falafel spot/options here in the Bay. We've been hearing so much hype about Achilles, and we had to try it for lunch. We ordered falafel plates and that's coming from some folks who eat meat. Their falafels truly are made in the shape of hearts haha, that's adorable and customers love that. We ordered online through their website (very easy) and were able to customize what we wanted in terms of rice/salad/pita or a mix. The pita bread was TO DIE FOR. I mean wow, soft and so delicious even after the car ride? Yes. I'm definitely going to order that again next time I come back. Everybody loved their falafel plates and only had great things to say. The customer service was fantastic. The man who was greeting customers at the cashier was so nice and genuinely cared about his customers. I peeped another worker tending to the grill and a few customers sitting out front. There aren't any seats indoors, but there seemed to be plenty outside. I was going to San Jose with a friend for just a couple of days and told a restaurant owner near our house about the plans. He said "you HAVE to go to Achilles!" We're on our way out of San Jose and decide to look it up. 5 min away, so of course, quick detour. This turned into an epic side quest! I love gyros, but they do not love me. I'm extremely picky about flavors and textures and my "safe food" is a grilled cheese. That being said, this place smelled like heaven. I took a leap of faith and went for the beef gyro plate with salad, feta, and like 3 dipping sauces (hummus, baba ganoush, and something with garlic) but I would have been fine with just the hummus. It was full-flavored, a creamy dippable texture I just wanted to put on everything ... like a Mediterranean gravy! The beef was thin sliced from the spit, you could choose all the salad toppings right there (no red onions for me!), and then you choose the sauce. Tzatziki is my fav, and they generously poured it on everything!!! There was rice in there too, that was delicious on its own, but really lended a nice texture to a gyro. The pita was fresh and soft. (I ordered 3 extra to go with my leftovers.) Before paying, we spotted some Turkish delights. I say "some" but there were so many (I should have taken a picture)! I have not enjoyed Turkish delights I've had in the past, and was hesitant, but the flavor combinations sounded so interesting. I asked about one, I think rose petal and pomegranate, and Grace offered to slice one for me to try. It was chewy, but didn't stick to the teeth. It was light and fruity, and was rolled in crushed dried rose petals, which gave it a beautiful aroma and a gentle crunch. There's nowhere to sit inside, but there are some benches right around the corner that were lovely. I ate about 1/2 of my food, and enjoyed every bite. I knew I was risking my stomach's wrath, but let me tell you - it was WORTH the risk. Several hours later, I was home, I went to bed, and woke up fine. For the first time in my life, I had Greek food that did not give me heartburn! Can I promise that for you? No. But it means I'll be trying even more things when I go to Achilles next. I placed an order online for pick-up which was a smooth ordering process. I got a chicken shawarma pocket sandwich with hummus and baba ghanouj. I love that you can fill it with any sauces and veggies you like. My favorites were the Achilles spread since it's super garlicky and tangy, and the spicy sauce. My boyfriend got the plate with gyro beef and chicken shawarma with all the fixings he wanted. I saw pictures of the cute heart-shaped falafel so I had to order us a side, and boy am I glad I did! Their falafel is so crispy and delicious and soooo good with the side of tahini to dip in. All their food was super fresh and portion sizes were really big too. I ended up saving half of the sandwich to eat for later. I also love how the food doesn't make me feel really heavy and full, which was much needed for me after the past few days of eating not as healthy as I would like. I wanted to try this place because of the heart shaped fallafel, but forgot to get it as I was amazed by all of the toppings I got to add to my plate. When I walked in, the workers were welcoming/friendly. They also worked very quickly when I ordered. The ordering process is kind of like chipotle style. I got the combo plate (half and half) with chicken shawarma or Achilles chicken (I forgot which chicken I got, sorry) and gyro beef. Since it was my first time, I decided to try almost all of their complimentary items that they offered because I wanted to see what I like and hopefully get more of that next time! I tried Achilles again after going a few years ago when I wasn't very impressed. Unfortunately, I was even less impressed today. The prices were high, but admittedlynot far off from other similar stops (13.99 for a chicken pita). My biggest complaint is that the pita was stale. I'm not that picky, honestly, but this tastes like a week old pita from Trader Joe's that was then microwaved to make softer. It was both hard and chewy without much flavor. Don't ask me how I know... the chicken shawarma was fine, probably the best part. The cucumbers were a bit flavorless - could use some acid. The kicker was that I didn't feel the service was very good. The menu is a little confusing for a non regular and the employee both didn't help and rushed me when I was trying to decipher. Tip for the menu - would be helpful to separate out what was a sauce and what was a topping. Overall I was pretty disappointed and I'll be encouraging my group to go elsewhere next time. I took salad with the chicken, not knowing they didn't have some yummy Mediterranean salad but only the meager counter salad leaves tomatoes and cucumber with canned black olives. They are very stingy with providing any quantity, I kept telling them to give more lettuce. Disappointing, and not worth the $17 or so entree with no place to sit and take out counter. Well how is it that you walk into a place and see former students waiting on you? A former student of mine Gustavo was waiting on me. It's always great to see my students working hard and trying to get ahead -with a great attitude I work in Santa Clara and see this place everyday. I finally decided to try it with my friend. It's small and simple ( you either get take out or sit on the benches outside), but it's so yummy! I got the beef gyro wrap with everything on it, a side of hummus, and they threw in a couple falafels (so fresh and crispy). It was great for a casual dinner and the service was great too. The benches outside are convenient and the area is covered-as long as it's not too cold it works! The gyro beef was delicious, the wrap was fluffy and the hummus, pita and falafel were fresh and yummy I had dinner (and lunch for the next day)! I took a baklava to go and it was just ok.
