David is excellent! Arrived on time, diagnosed my connectivity issues and explained everything in layman's terms, not geek speak. First: he accidentally broke an exterior light in 2 places but didn't tell me. I noticed it when I was looking at the fixture, which was completely smashed on two sides. I sent him a photo and he said he must have hit it with his ladder and offered to replace it. That's pretty difficult to miss hitting, but whatever. I asked if I could pay him to install another light that was broken on my front porch, of course I would pay for that. I ordered the light based off the part number. Partially my fault for not taking it out of the box to inspect it, but I had to leave the house and he installed the light. When I returned home I noticed the light was 2 times smaller than the other 2. I mean, wouldn't a professional ask a customer "did you notice the size difference", especially because it's so noticeable, before installing the light? My usual electrician certainly would have because it's his name and company reputation and he doesn't want something to look bad or be incorrect without reconfirming with me. Now I have to pay my usual electrician to uninstall the smaller light fixture and pay to have the correct size installed. I take responsibility on part of the issue m, but I expect more from people who take pride in their work and this issue impacted my overall satisfaction. Good job installing my Ring system. I've had a few issues with sensors installed incorrectly that I have been fixing myself. I won't use him again but I would recommend him, just double check his work before he leaves and don't expect any "extra effort" on his part. Definitely knows how to install the cameras and door locks and set up the Nest system. Zero issues there. Worked quickly and pleasant to work with. Trustworthy to leave alone in my house (which I'm usually weird about). So still impressed by him and most of the work he did for me.

Thanks, NorthStar, for making my decision that much easier to go with your competitor. UPDATE: So, does that mean you didn't bother reading my response to you (see screen shot of image I just uploaded from my reply immediately back to you). Again, you have proved my point. Maybe your reps are tied up bc they're in the phone trying to respond to all the negative customer service reviews, like mine. It took you *2 weeks* to respond and accuse me of "not responding" to you when I did so within hours. Nice. Second Update: I see Martha has retracted her comment to me on my review (hence what my first Update spoke to....now it doesn't make sense, but you get the picture of what happened). More proof this company doesn't "have it together." I strongly encourage those looking for a security system to look elsewhere, or at least do your research before committing to North Star. This company has given me the run-around and I'm not even a customer! There are many other companies that value your time and business more than North Star. I am a perfect example.

    I'm writing this on a day that my neighborhood just went nuts because we had some door-to-door…read moresupposed alarm company sales people going around. I called NorthStar, my security company, to see if they'd ever heard of these guys and they told me that "reputable firms don't go door to door." That reminded me that I was overdue for writing them a review. My husband and I (well, my husband mostly), interviewed four or five firms before selecting this one. Their installers are also their sales guys. In other words, these are people who know their stuff. Nobody tried to sell us something we didn't need. The guy who came out - and followed us through some installation difficulties (way our house was built, not NorthStar's fault) - his name is Gary. He is friendly and SUPER knowledgeable. He explained things and then explained them again and gave my engineer-husband all the detail he wanted. But when I had a question and DIDN'T want the detail - he boiled it down for me. Their pricing was similar to other firms we talked with. Pay for the equipment and have lower monthly monitoring, or do a 3-yr contract with higher monthly monitoring and lower/no equipment costs. They give you several options to work with your budget. Bottom line is, they weren't significantly higher or lower than anybody else. We had our first "false alarm" the other day. Our nanny accidentally set off the alarm and while she was punching the code in downstairs, my husband was also punching it in on the keypad upstairs, which cancelled the whole thing. Kinda funny actually. The monitoring service called us WITHIN TWO MINUTES. I was glad to know they were on the ball just in case we need them for real some day. In the end, we went with this firm because they were the most knowledgeable, didn't have pushy sales people, so we felt confident we were getting the info we needed to make a good decision. Turned out to be a very good decision!

    I recently had Bulldog install a home security system. Their two man crew was professional and…read morecourteous and didn't make a mess as they installed the system. Their pricing is much more competitive than some of the other security vendors in the area, plus I really like the fact that you don't have to sign a service contract. If your product is good, you shouldn't need to lock your customers into a contract. I'm glad Bulldog agrees with this philosophy. I wish the installer had spent just a couple more minutes explaining a few of the system operations, but that is my only complaint. I'd recommend giving them a call to at least compare with quotes from Ackerman and ADT.

    I met with ADT on 11/16/19 for security service. They stated i have 3 business after installation…read moreto cancel my services. The appointment was set for 11/23/2019. On this day the tech arrived without the proper equipment to completed the job. He also told me that he no longer worked for bulldog they just called him in for this one job. He informed me that i would have to call in and have the appointment reset for the following week as they needed to order equipment. At this time i still have no active security service and am not able to move my family in until the service work is completed. I called in and reset my appointment for 11/26/2019 as i was told by the tech the they would have all the equipment needed by Monday. The technician came out on 11/23/2019, yesterday, completed the installation (which took about 5hrs) and left. All night I was getting false triggers and false alarms and the Door bell does not notify me each time when its pushed. Today I called ADT bulldog to cancel my service. They refused stating that their policy is not 3days from installation but instead 3days from the date the paperwork is signed with the sales tech. By this standard i would not even have their equipment to see if it works for my family. In addition i was sent an amended contract on 11/26/2019 (well within the 3day contract rule they have) from bulldog. After doing some digging I was also able to find out that Bulldog sent a technician that they had fired previously, who does not work for the company anymore to my home for the installation. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. Now they are refusing the honor their 3day rule for cancellation. No matter if the rule is 3days from the contract or installation both apply as they sent a revised contract yesterday 11/26/19 and I also have my services installed yesterday. I spoke with Valeria who would not provide her last name or company ID number. She stated if I stop paying that she would send me to collections and refused to let me speak with anyone else higher than her. I called back and Wendy answered the phone and when she realized it was me she put the phone on hold. I hear her say "thank you for calling bulldog this is Wendy, oh no" right before putting my call on immediate hold. I waited on hold for 10 minutes before it eventually went to voicemail. They are avoiding my calls as they now know my number. I called from a different number and got through immediately but when I told them who I was, same outcome. Put on hold until the phone eventually went to voicemail. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY...... CROOKS!!!!!

After a near-miss with some lightning, which completely knocked out my First Alert system, I found out how Ackerman makes all their money - the estimate was over $650 to replace the board and that didn't include any additional bits that might need replacing (had to replace two door sensors too). I ended up buying my own Ademco kit and hiring SPS for both the install and monitoring. This time I went with a wireless unit for phone (the lightning came in via the phone line - it actually hit the service pole). A call brought Bo Beaven from SPS out to look things over and give me an estimate - their hourly rate was HALF what Ackerman charges - and since I got my own equipment when John the installer came out it was a breeze, and half again the estimated time I got from Ackerman. The entire experience was fantastic. I also ended up using them for the monitoring - which came out about the same as what Ackerman was charging me, even with the added expense for the cell service on the wireless phone. Recently I was throwing a code and was able to get a human on the phone with the first call, and get a live technician with instructions to clear the code over the phone. To top it off they're coming by next week to take another look to make sure that there isn't an issue with the wireless - that's what I call CUSTOMER SERVICE!

    I was an Ackerman customer for about 8 years until my account was sold to ADT without my knowledge…read more I have been using ADT for about 2 years. In early December 2025, I noticed Ackerman Security was back in business; I said okay, let me call them to re-established home security services with them. A home appointment was scheduled, and the woman sales rep for Ackerman came to my home. We talked and reviewed the work that were needed to convert my home security services from ADT to Ackerman. We discussed the amount and monthly payments for Ackerman Security services. To establish services, I was going to finance the equipment charges to a finance partner company for Ackerman. I gave the Ackerman rep my personal information (e.g. Social Security number, address, phone numbers, and other information to establish security services.) The Ackerman rep never follow up with me. When I called her, she gave me an excuse saying it is a technical issue, management is reviewing your information, or some off the wall excuse. I got tired of waiting, and I utilized ADT security. I paid more money with ADT; however, I have a peace of mind. If Ackerman Security didn't want my business, I wish the rep would have said something; and she didn't. Very sad business practice; and I am glad that I am not returning to Ackerman as a customer.
