I used to live in the UP and have eaten a ton of pasties. Ackroyd's has the best pasties that I've found in the lower peninsula. Delicious, and I highly recommend them. The tarts are also good. Ordered many, many dozens of scones. After the 5th or 6th bag of burned scones I was really upset & emailed them. I've been a long time customer & have spent a huge amount of money ordering their products. Not only did they ignore my email they removed me from their Facebook site, probably to ensure I don't give them a bad review there. Stopped in a while ago on the suggestion of a friend. I knew nothing about this place, or really about Scottish meat pies at all, but my friend insisted I had to try it out. This tiny shop (good thing I was looking for it, because if you blink, you could miss it, and that would be a shame) is packed with hearty deliciousness. The young woman behind the counter was very helpful once we told her it was our first visit; she explained all the traditional sweet and savory offerings, and made suggestions of her favorites. We left with two bags of goodies. My favorite was the cheese and onion pie. This place is one of those family-owned gems that makes it's name on great quality, great service, and great value. Just had Ackroyd's haggis, sausage rolls and scotch eggs last night at Urbanrest Brewery! The BEST haggis I've ever had! They put on an amazing event with a storyteller, traditional Scottish dancers, and an amazing spectacle of entering the haggis with a bagpiper and a Scotsman reciting the Burns haggis toast! Over priced, overrated and honestly as a Scotsman their pies are a disgrace. The pastry is ok, not as good as it used to be, but my god the complete lack of filling compared to the ones back home is the problem. Honestly if they tried to serve their pies at a football match, they would end up in the bin unsold. By the way paying over five dollars for a pie that has only a couple of table spoons of filling is outrageous and their just taking advantage of the Americans lack of anything to compare it with. As for in the shop there are no prices on the goods and the manager wants you to ask him what the prices are on everything, very annoying and besides there is nothing they have that can't be bought on Amazon for a third of what they charge. Sorry Ackroyd's been going to your shop since I moved here in the seventies, but I can wait for my next visit home to get a proper pie and bridie. read more

First, I sent a package to my friend, Chris, in New Mexico where temps as of 04/2021 are between 85-91 degrees F. He reported the goods arrived as if sent from the Arctic. Bravo Ackroyd's! He also said the Heinz beans took him back to his many visits to the U.K. He raved about the Ginger conserves and the Meyer lemon and ginger marmalade. Oh and the spice buns were outstanding. For the first time, I also ordered a few things for myself for Easter. Even my Mom enjoyed the soda bread. I am now a convert to Vegemite, clotted cream with your fantastic scones, and I am now addicted to Heinz beans ( I hate pork and beans). From shortbread and raspberry bars to the full line of classic Scottish meat pies and Michigan pasties, everything I've ever had from this place is world class. My favorite items here are the sweets.. and that's saying something because I don't really like sweets! Honestly though, nothing makes me happier than some treats from "home". Though I am not Scottish or British, I spent many a summer on the isles and we share many of the same candies on the European mainland. Rowntrees (green package).. I could eat a whole bag if I wasn't careful...They're juicy fruit gummies rolled in some sugar. Cadbury candies and chocolates are classics, best caramels ever! Maltesers are like whoppers, but 100x tastier because of better chocolate. Ahh just some of my favorites. Bakery wise I am still a bigger fan of the sweets than the savories. Ackroyd's has some of the better fern cakes I've had. These delicious little almond cakes with strawberry jam and incredible icing on top are the bomb! Bonus, if you check in on Yelp you'll get one free teacake! Of course the shortbread here is delicious, you just can't beat fresh baked shortbread! I've tried a large variety of savory pies here; bridies, sausage rolls, steak pies, lots.. they all have the same aftertaste.. they leave a weird oily film on my tongue that I just can't get over. It's either suet in the meat mixture or the butter in the pastry.. either way it throws me off. read more

I have gone shopping at Ackroyd's since I was a small child. The first one I went to was in Detroit than the one on 5 mile. I had shopped Ackrod's for maybe 70 years. Yep, an I am much older than that. LOL An I also can use a computer. My problem happened when they kept changing the blood in the black pudding. My family would even come from out of state to buy this. None of us do any more. The older girls who worked there for many years were always honest an shared the truth about why it no longer was the same taste. It just kept getting worse an worse. The new an younger girls would lis to you like you had no clue to what was going on. SAD..that way you cannot trust anyone there any more. I still crave the Black Sausage but until the blood goes back to what it was they shall not take my money any more. Also the hours are cut badly and I like fresh food and not frozen so now I lost another place I always had on my list to visit. Get it together and if I find out you do than I shall come back...until than I shall spend my money else where. read more

This adorable family-owned bakery is one of my new favorite haunts. The scones are amazing and one of the more affordable items on offer. The steak and mushroom pasties are my favorite savory items, and they'll even heat one up for you on the spot if, like me, you can't wait until you get home and you like to eat them on freezing cold days in the parking lot in your car while the windows in your car fog up from the warmth (pro tip: be sure to tuck a napkin in your shirt unless you want pastry flakes all over your shirt). The meat pies are also yummy, especially if (Scots cover your ears!) you take them home and eat them with Frank's Red Hot (okay, uncover them now) or HP sauce. Their instagram shows them road-testing vegan pies, which makes me so excited, and they have mac and cheese and cheese and onion pies that have earned five stars from my cheese-eating housemate. And that doesn't even get to the sweet case, where fern cakes go spectacularly with tea and the shortbread is lovely and the butter and nut tarts are glorious. You can't go wrong. read more

Just got back from a shopping trip to Ackroyds. I say shopping because I have never walked out of there with the variety of goodies that I bought this time. Irish stew pies, mac n cheese pies, corned beef and cabbage pasties, beef pasties, cheese and onion pies, meat pies, and shepherds pies. Yowza. McKenna was a great help and very patient. I took a list in and she took care of the whole order. We have been going to Ackroyds for decades and I am very happy to say that the product and service have not changed... both excellent as usual. Coming from a Polish family I must admit I grew up with a dearth of Scottish pastries and my knowledge of sausage is pretty limited to those produced in eastern Europe and in the smoker in my mom's backyard. Because of this I had never really given much thought to Scottish food and I hadn't concerned myself with even trying any of it out until I saw a Groupon for Ackroyd Scotch Bakery & Sausage. I had no idea a shop like this existed so close to where I grew up so I was intrigued. Admittedly I forgot to buy the Groupon but I did not forget to visit Ackroyd's the next time I had the chance. Being that I'm a pastry/sweets fan that's pretty much all I picked up so I apologize for the lack of savory commentary in advance. First off let's talk about the obvious--the shortbread. I love a good shortbread and Ackroyd's house-made shortbread is fantastic. Nice and buttery, melt in your mouth goodness! I bought a package to take home and my mom and I polished it off in a day. Of course I got a bag of scones which I enjoyed the rest of the week at work for breakfast. Scones can sometimes be a bit dry but these were nice and moist and the perfect portion size. If you're looking for something super sweet their case of tarts and cakes is heavenly. The butter tart in particular made me a very happy girl and the eccles cake was excellent. My friend's husband is Scottish and she's shared with me Scottish Oatcakes on several occasions so I had to try Ackroyd's to compare. Just as good, if not better, than the ones she brings over from the UK (much fresher obviously!). While the gal behind the counter was packing up my purchase (I had the pleasure of being helped by a pleasant high school aged lass rather than the surly lady most folks here have seemed to encounter) I walked around and checked out the rest of the goods in the small shop. In addition to their own baked goods they carry a wide variety of imported British canned and dry goods like pre-packaged cookies and candies, teas, Heinz baked beans, salad cream, etc,. Anglophiles--you'll be in heaven! The prices here are beyond reasonable and there's also a wide selection of sausages and savory pasties and pies that will make your mouth water. If you're new to the Scottish food game I highly recommend that you make Ackryod's your first encounter! read more

Walking up to this shop, you smell delicious smoked sausage that seems to permeate the entire store. The prices are low and reasonable, and everything in here you can tell is homemade by sight. If my little fingers put all these pasties and pastries together I would charge a mint. But I'm glad they don't. Did you know Pasties are unique to Michigan (having more pastie shops than anyone in the US) and pasties are considered the unofficial food here? Enough with the lesson.... I love getting pasties here, they are still warm to the touch, buttery and flaky outside, almost like a hand held pot pie. Try the beef and veggie filled or chicken filled. How do they get the gravy to stay inside and not ooze out? Fantastic. Oh and don't miss picking up a homemade pot pie. Usually, if there is bakery in the name, I'm all in. Not so much here. I am not a huge fan of European curiosities, nor was I going here for that reason. What I saw on the shelves was a lot of products that you can get at Cost Plus World Market. But, I suppose if you are a Europhile, this would be a good place to pick up a few things. Customer Service doesn't seem to be a priority here. My son and I spent a lot of time peering into the glass case to get an idea of what they offered besides shortbread. We stood there for a good 10 minutes before anyone behind the counter acknowledged us, and then it was just to ask "Ready?". Putting ambiance aside, I continued with my mission. I went for one thing and one thing only: SHORTBREAD! Too bad it was pretty gross. I couldn't wait until I got home to take a bite. When I did, I was so disappointed. It tasted savory, like onions. I'm sure it was just a storage issue, where some of the meat pies were in the same case or something, but still, it was nasty. I got some of the savory pies and meat rolls for the guys, and they were unimpressed by those as well. Certainly I am no expert on Scottish cuisine. From the standpoint of someone who specifically traveled to Ackroyd's to try something new and delicious, I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

The one star rating is two-fold: for the quality of their food products and their complete lack of common courtesy and customer service. My parents drove close to 100 miles to go to Ackroyd's Scottish Bakery, mostly due to my urging, because they were coming to visit me in California. They bought 3 dozen Scotch pies, 6 black puddings, 1 white pudding and a loaf of bread. The Scotch pie filling was delicious, but the crust is nothing like a Scotch pie crust, so it was disappointing (Cameron's in Florida are much closer to a real Scotch pie). The black puddings were rancid, honest to God just bad (almost a metallic taste)...this was the most disappointing because they bought SIX! I didn't taste the white pudding as they tried this one in Michigan, but my mother said it was freezer burned and also rancid-how old are these products?? Not knowing the black puddings were rancid, my mother packed them (still frozen) into the middle of her suitcase and when she arrived here in California, they were still frozen and put them in my freezer. When she called Ackroyd's to tell them of the rancidness of the puddings, she was told that something probably happened during transit! They traveled by plane, not a car!! What an insult to even say that to a relatively educated person! No apology, no accountability that they sold rancid items (the white pudding didn't travel). Now we are stuck with 5 rancid puddings which are going right in the garbage. Disgusting; and I feel terrible because I was the one who told them to go there. Save your hard earned money and spend it on food that is not spoiled and sold by someone who appreciates your business! read more

I admit it. My rating is biased. But I can't help being overly enthused about a place that has been ingrained in my family's nomming tradition since before I was born. When has my family not gone to Ackroyd's? I can't remember. Ackroyd's meat pies for lunch. Ackroyd's empire biscuits, fern cakes, and shortbread always stocked. Ackroyd's (now) special order cinnamon buns for holidays. Ackroyd's for Easter. Ackroyd's for Christmas. Ackroyd's whenever we can muster the drive from Madison Heights to Redford. There was a lull for a minute in our Ackroyd's craze when the bakery closed its closer to full-scale store in Birmingham. Nearer to home, Ackroyd's Birmingham location is what I remember growing up. The closing didn't stop us for long. Going to the Redford store was like discovering Ackroyd's all over again -- just a smaller, quainter version that somehow manages to SHIP ALL OVER THE COUNTRY! Wow, how many bakeries do that now? Being Scottish myself and born and bred on Ackroyd's, I just can't imagine life without this bakery. Losing it (again) would be like losing a grandparent who made food that warmed your soul, no matter how people rated it on Yelp. read more

The chicken curry pie is delicious, black currant lemon tart is tart and sweet, and the sausage roll is good. The boys were all getting hair cuts down the street when I spotted this little gem on the corner. I felt like I stepped into a tiny corner of Scotland when entered the shop. Delightful little meat pies on one side and beautiful sweets on the other. I picked up a couple pounds of bangers, (my husbands favorite) several different meat pies, and a load of sweets. First, I'd like to say that going in here hungry was a bad idea. I held back, but man...so much goodness in this tiny little bakery. I wanted to try everything. It probably helped that the lady behind the counter was a big ol' grouch and seemed quite unhappy. After every item I ordered, she followed (in a surly tone) with "Anything else?" I think she was on the verge of growling. I primarily stopped in for their sausage rolls, which I LOVE. So good and fattening. I got a dozen of the small ones, so that's not as bad as the large ones, right? This trip I decided to try some of their pastries. I ordered 6 fern cakes, 6 eccles cakes, and 6 scones. I didn't dare mention the Yelp ad for a free shortbread because I just wanted to end this lady's misery. So far, I have tried the eccles cake and the fern cake. The eccles cake was good, but more of a breakfast item paired with a great cup of coffee in my opinion. The eccles cake looks like a giant cookie at first glance. According to their menu, it's a blend of currants & brown sugar in a homemade puff pastry shell, topped with crystallized sugar. The fern cake was wonderful! My mom tried one too and she put the rest away so that no one else could have them. If you're not familiar, the fern cake is a tart filled with a layer of strawberry jam and almond cake, topped with white icing. It was heaven. I really enjoyed every bit of flavor. I am confident that I will be back for these lovely little tarts and the others, especially for my mom who is a sucker for almond. The other lady behind the counter was much friendlier, and even smiled at me, asking if I'd been helped. I can look past the grouch who helped me because these goodies are worth going back for. I appreciate Ackroyd's jumping on the social media bandwagon by having a Facebook page & Twitter account, as well as a nice little treat offered from mentioning Yelp. For a small business in a tough economy, it's nice to see them take advantage of resources available to them to stay in business & hopefully successful! read more

I've been shopping at Ackroyd's for over 30 years. Having been born and bred in Glasgow I enjoy my scottish treats. I go for sliced sausage and baps which make a great breakfast sandwich. Also the meat pies, bangers, cakes and candies I remember from Scotland. I miss the potato scones they used to carry. If you're not familiar with scottish cuisine (do those 2 words go together?) and you're disappointed with what you find there, you are probably just setting your expectations too high. Everything is fantastic. I order up Sliced Beef sausage and grab a couple cans of Heinz Beans for traditional breakfast. For a dinner I order a variety of meat pies, Bridie, and other savory pastries. Don't forget the shortbreads, tarts, and biscuits! I will back again for the few things I haven't tried. If you want to try a different flavor potato chip get the Walkens Roast Chicken Crisps. Ackroyd's has all of my UK needs conveniently located. I always get a kick out of people who order "Paste-ies". Past-ies or a Pasty (singular) are the meat filled calzone shaped pies loved by many a Youpers, upper peninsula natives to all you south of the Big Mac. Paste-ies are the meat filled tassels worn by erotic dancers, and... Well...... also loved by Youpers and non-youpers alike. Too bad you don't see more of them, but that is another thing altogether. To be honest my moms pasties were much better than that served at Ackroyd's, and NO... mom did not dance. She did make her meat pies with large chunks of steak and potato along with the required vegetables and a oversize ring of crust. The big debate in our house was did you eat the crust ring first before diving into the filling OR did you attack the meat and potatoes first and save the pastry ring for the coup de gras. But with that said, Ackroyd's pies are tasty and priced right as are all the baked goods in this little shop. read more

Four days later I received a package full of my Ackroyd's favorites. Friendly bakery with great offerings. A couple of my favorites are the Fern Cakes and the meat pies! Let's add scones to that list for a top 3 must haves. Love their tea blends and marmalade selection. To be quite honest I've tried just about everything they have to offer and it is all delicious. I don't live very close but make the hour drive because they are worth the trip. I've also ordered online when traveling. There are some things in life you really shouldn't be without. Great Scot...what a dandy little place! The bakery's interior needs a bit of updating, but their products, both the savory and the sweet, are fantastic! Very much worth the detour off of I-96. But be careful, if that's part of your regular commute and you make that first trip to Ackroyd's, I would bet it wouldn't be too long before you'll make that little detour again...and again...and so on. The great prices also allow this to be more often than not. One easy win-win situation Ackroyd's could do is offer premium-quality coffee and tea. Folks want to enjoy their Scottish treats right away, not having to wait to go to find a coffee shop to get a cup of joe with it or to go home to brew some. Offering a fridge of beverages would also probably increase customer convenience AND Ackroyd's profitability. These little tweaks would make it a 5-star place! Stop me if you've heard this one but Ackroyd Scotch Bakery & Sausage is awesome... as an expat from Scotland I'm just thankful this place is still around. I travel from Ann Arbor to Redford to get my taste of the old country. When you walk into the store the front counter has two refrigerated cases the one on the left is for baked goods and the one of the right is for savories (meat pies, pork pies, sausage roll, pasties and bridies which are like pasties but with less filler inside). Of all the savories on sale it's the meat pies (scotch / shell pies) that draw me to Ackroyd's. The Scotch (meat) pie was the forerunner to fast food (but in a good way) this is what you'd buy at half time while watching a football (soccer) game. You could eat the pie with trimmings (beans or mashed potato) one handed while being jostled standing in a crowd and not make a mess. If you ask nicely they will warm up the savories for you so you can eat right away. The bakery also does a number of familiar bread products like scones, short bread, baps (morning rolls, you can't have a proper bacon roll or chip butty without a buttered morning roll) and they also have Scottish plain loaves. I'm so happy about that do you know how hard it is to find a plain loaf? A plain loaf is a traditional Scottish white loaf that has a dark artisan crust on the top and bottom of the bread but NO crust on the sides. Every Scottish household has some plain bread in addition to the normal bread. Not only is it a bakery but it also has a number of imported familiar British brands like Birds custard, Branston pickle, Lilt, Ribina etc. You can even buy Irn-Bru (regular and diet) by the case and by the bottle. If you don't know what Irn-Bru is then you never grew up in Scotland. It's a soda that actually outsells Coke and Pepsi in Scotland. The bakery items are well priced and you get a lot for your money however the imported items are a little pricey but what do you expect they were shipped in from Brittan. If I worked closer to Ackroyd Scotch Bakery & Sausage this is where I would end up going to lunch. Oh and the bakery also does seasonal specialties like yummy Hot cross buns for Easter. read more

Since moving away from Detroit, I've made it a point to travel with an empty cooler in the trunk whenever I visit MI. It's sole purpose is to transport a few dozen meat pies and bridies back to Kentucky with me.
