My husband and I "discovered" Superior Pasties last year. We were sad when they closed down, and while we found another place, it just wasn't the same. Imagine our surprise and delight when we saw Superior Pasties had reopened! It appears to be under new management, but the same friendly service is still there. The decor is still very simple (focus remains on the food quality), but it is roomy inside with two tables in case you'd like to eat in. My husband ordered a Chicken Fajita and a beef pasty. The chicken fajita flavor is new, and after taking a small bite, I was surprised at how good it was. I ordered my usual: beef, chicken, and shepherds pie. I had the beef one first, and it tasted as good as it did before the closure. The other two flavors are still in our freezer, because I forget how filling and satisfying pasties are. I have to be starving/hangry in order to be able to eat one. But I can never go into Superior Pasties and one only order one; I have to be sure I have some for later! The pasties at the other place we found are good, but not like Superior's. Superior's pasties seem to be bigger, the filling is very flavorful, and the Shepherd's Pie is in pasty form, not in an aluminum tin. Again, even while busy, the staff at Superior was very friendly, and even engaged in light conversation as much as she was able. I definitely hope that Superior Pasties gets enough business (and resources) to stay open for a long time! I finally got to try the "new" Superior pasties on Plymouth rd. In my earlier review six years ago I panned this shop because of the owner and his attitude. Since he has passed,and I always liked his pasties,and I think new owners,we went at 5pm to order. My wife came back to the car without any pasties and I thought oh no hear we go again. She was told that they only had frozen ones and that you had to call a half hour before you could pick them up. I was hungry and with the old shop they always had some right in the oven. I'm not giving up but they should re think not having pasties ready to go for those that don't want to call in. I was going to call before going but I couldn't find a phone number. We have been buying pasties from Superior for a number of years. We have served them at parties and buy them regularly for a treat at home. Several different variations but our favorites are Traditional with rutabaga, steak and chicken. Our daughter likes vegetarian. We highly recommend this store. read more

And if you're getting them for dinner, they're Supper Pasties. Absolutely wonderful shop with an even more wonderful owner. If you use them to soak up basement water, they're Sump-pump Pasties. If you bring Mary Poppins here, they're Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Pasties. And if you wear them as sexy lingerie, they're Suspender Pasties. His pasties are top-notch, especially the shepherd's pie which is the one I got when I stopped in here recently. The guy knows how to make his stuff. He's not trying to copy Michigan standards or Cornwall for that matter. He's just making some absolutely delicious, unique, original, pasties of heaven. They may be the best thing I've tried in the Detroit area. If they make you shake your butt, they're Shakira Pasties. If a Kennedy chokes on them, they're Sirhansirhan Pasties. And if they're too salty, they're Shur-Fine Pasties, or most drivers these days. The decor in here as lovely as well and seems to focus on nature & wildlife in the wilderness of the Great Lakes - which are one of the most beautiful regions in North America and the world. Very underrated because of the level of industry in the cities around this area. If you take a selfie here, it's Summertimesadness Pasties. If the pasties do well in school, they're Summacumlaude Pasties. And if you eat too many of them, you'll end up looking like a Sumowrestler Pasties. And if you rescue them from the streets of Queens, they're Sammisweetheart Pasties. In any case make sure you stop in to this wonderful, unassuming, delightful, and unique pasty shop and try some of the delicious delights that this guy is making. Additionally he may also be the most friendly guy I've met in Michigan. There are pasty shops all over Montana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and other northern states - but none are quite like this one, my favourite. If hipsters get judgy about these pasties, they're Sociopath Pasties. If they refuse to be eaten, they're Insubordinate Pasties. When you question a table full of knitters where to could go for pasties, and everyone at the table says Superior Pasties, they must be good! And, I'd say they are the best in the lower peninsula. Superior Pasties have several varieties, but we stick with the original because a pastie without rutabaga is bland. She offers two sizes, which is nice. Although the owner has had a very difficult year, including an oven that has broken down twice, she keeps her customers informed on her Facebook page. We buy the the large size by the dozen frozen and save trips to Livonia. We thaw them before putting them in the oven and they are like freshly bake. read more

My unfinished review from 2011: The ladies who work here are real nice and the Pasties are reasonable and good. I'm glad I hadn't yet gone looking for them at their previous location or I might have been upset not to find them and assume they'd closed. I happened onto them by accident on my way to the Senate since they are inside the same strip mall. I immediately switched to their place knowing I could go to the Senate another day. The Pasty and gravy were good and more than I could eat in one sitting. The price was reasonable and I left full and happy. 2016: I came here two or three times on my last trip and always enjoyed the pasties I got. This was one of the places I looked forward to coming back to this trip. So far I've tried the turkey pasty, the beef Pasty, and the breakfast pasties. All have been good. I'm sure they would be even better warmed in the oven to give the crust a nice crunch but unfortunately I only have a microwave in my motel room and I can tell you they still turned out delicious warmed for 90 seconds in the microwave. I usually sit down and eat one in the place when I go in and I'm always happy with what I get. I look forward to going back and trying more varieties. Thank you to the Canadian couple up at the Soo Locks who first told me about pasties! That was in 2007 and I've been eating them ever since. I rarely find them in San Diego but there is a pasty shop near my daughter in Mesa Arizona that we always go to when I'm in town and of course I eat them wherever I can find them when I come to Michigan for visits. Superior's Traditional Steak Pasties are the best I've ever had. Their gravy is tasty also and goes well with the pasty, however the pasty by no means requires it. I haven't tried anything else from them, and don't really have a desire to, because the Traditional Pasty is just so darn good. I've read a lot of the negative reviews about the man/owner that works there...boohoo, toughen up, ninnies. Some American's will find anything to be offended over, these days. I don't frequent the establishment to make friends or be coddled, I frequent the establishment to pick up some food and leave, because hands down, it's the best pasty I've had in my life. By the way, I'm a life long Michigander and have had many a pasties from all across MI over the years...this place takes the Gold Medal. So, if you want a fresh, healthy, hearty, homemade meal, I strongly suggest you give Superior Pasties a try...I also suggest you first try the Traditional Steak Pasty, the rutabaga makes it the Chef's Kiss. read more

After entering and waiting a few minutes a man comes from the back yelling " I can't even take a s**t . Then he continued with the foul language about how difficult it is to find help. I ask for a steak pasty with gravy. he refused to sell me the gravy. I told him I'm not a fan of pasties and that I was there because my husband wanted one. I had never had one with gravy and it sounded kind of good to eat it that way, He yelled and argued with me until I chose not to have a pasty. He was very very disrespectful and rude. Best Pasties I've had south of the bridge my favorite is the shepherd's pie would definitely recommend giving them a try

We stopped here and were very happy we did. The owner's are very friendly, you can see, and smell the pasties being made. They were hot and fresh. We ordered a Shepherd's Pie Pastie and split it just to test things. It was amazingly delicious. We landed up taking six to bring back to Florida with us. The owner's make you laugh, the food is excellent, the pastry delicate, and the fillings actually full of flavor. Besides the main menu they have special pasties you can order ahead of time. I would have loved to get 6 Cordon Bleu to take home but it would have taken a few days and we unfortunately have to leave town before they would be ready. read more

I should've read the earlier reviews. I also had experience with the shouting unmasked man behind the counter in this place recently. When I entered the store, he started to yell at me. Pretty bomb pasties. If you don't know what that is it's kind of like a knish. If you don't know what that is, it's like a big baked pierogie. I had the shepherd's pie version, it was really good and filling! Coleslaw was good too. They apparently make a sauerkraut and kielbasa that im gonna get next time, sounds really good. Owner is really cool also, support this man he's a good guy. On the outside, Superior has everything you want from a pasty shop, but that's where the comparisons to the U.P. end. Their pasties are fine, but in the Pasty Guy's book, these aren't U.P.-quality or anything over the top amazing. It's all fine and while the shop and ownership are great, that can only mean so much when the pasty is the thing that matters. Look at the picture and tell me it's a great crust with a straight face. Very nice experience here. Its a little place with friendly lady helping and a hands on type owner who will make sure you get everything you need. The regular pasties in here are quite respectable but the shepherd's pie varietal is by far the best thing going in here. Better seasoned and moister than your traditional versions, possibly my fave pastie type ever. Pop it into an oven for a half hour, then flip it open and add a bit of fresh ground pepper and you are good to go. Add a side salad and you have a super quick full meal. Good for a cooler summer night, I can see this becoming a fall go to dinner. Side of gravy was appreciated with the traditionals, the shepherd's pie did not need it a bit though. I was the only one who went outside the box a bit and once the doubters tried my pastie they wanted to swipe it. You will find Ashby Sterling ice cream here which is not as handy if you are buying your stuff to go. They also carry some homemade type baked goods that are better for that situation. The lemon poppy-seed mini loaf I sampled was tasty and the husband seemed to enjoy peanut butter and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Huge too. We will return soon, some people are whining about my hogging the good stuff... Try it if you are at all into meat pies. My Fox half off has a deal going for 20 bucks worth of pasties for 10 bucks. Stopped by because my coworker recommended this place and I was not disappointed. The owner was extremely nice and welcoming. As it was my first time, he went over the menu and told me about each item. I felt like I was getting fitted for a dress rather than blindly trying to decide on what to order. I ordered the Shepherd's Pasty and Chicken broccoli. I was really hesitant on the polish pasty since I loved the sausage but not a big fan of sauerkraut. The owner ended up just giving me one for free to try it. He guaranteed that I would like it and didn't want me to miss out! He also carefully went through all the baking requirements and how to get the best taste out of the ones I was taking home to bake. As I moved to register to pay, I realized I forgot my wallet (super embarrassing). I told the owner that I would go home and grab it as I lived only 10 min away and he was like "Don't worry about it, bring it next time". Seriously! This is the kind of service we should be getting. I will definitely be back. I just got home and I couldn't even wait to write the review. I am also munching on the Shephard's pasty which is beyond amazing. Get the gravy with it for sure! Most importantly, knowing that it was baked by such a kind hearted and sincere person makes me happy. You don't get this kind of service in restaurants nowadays! I've eaten a fair number of pasties over the years and my personal experience places these rank at the bottom of the list. Maybe some of the other reviewers have never had a real pasty but the beef pasties I picked up yesterday were heated exactly per instructions and the fillings were dry and flavorless, the gravy tasted like store bought. The crust was not bad, thus the 2 star rating vs a 1 star rating. The owner's personality is definitely an acquired taste. I am not a politically correct person and can easily tolerate a bit of foul language but this guy doesn't seem to have any professionalism, whatsoever. Although I didn't really care for the owner's language, it had nothing to do with my review. The pasties were just very poor. I won't be back. Too bad because I do like pasties! read more

This is the kind of place to tell your friends about. I have taken friends, coworkers, and my wife here to experience a great pastie. The restaurant is pretty basic. A couple of tables and mismatched chairs are in front of the counter near the entrance. It seems odd that, while I'm writing this, I never realized that 80% of the restaurant was the kitchen and prep area, while only a small area is reserved for dining and customers. Nevertheless, it does not take away from the experience. If anything, it adds to the quaint feeling of the place. Enough about layout. The pasties are delicious. I have tried the chicken, steak, and breakfast pasties. I love the chicken pastie with gravy for lunch. But buy the breakfast pasties pack to go and eat them at home. I was addicted to these for a while. Mmm. Did I mentioned that these are also cheap AND filling? Get a combo with a side and a drink for like $7. They are just as good to go as they are when dining in. And finally, the service is great. The owner has a unique sense of humor. He is funny like the kind of guy you would have a beer with. My daughter and I stopped in on Saturday in order to attempt to enjoy a pasty. There was a heavy set older man behind the counter and as stated in previous reviews that unfortunately I had not seen prior to my visit or I probably would not have entered the shop. The man was very obnoxious making sick remarks it was unbelievable he was rude sarcastic and against my better judgement we ordered 2 lunch combos. When we paid for our food he even went as far as making an unbelievable racist remark about black people having ridiculous names like meisha and tikiesha etc... he said you know those crazy black people names I stated you are crazy and he said yes I have been dropped on my head a few times. Unbelievable....I will never return to this place and I will tell my family and friends and co workers not to go to this racist bigot place. What trash he said that his name was Montie well Montie a lot could be said about your choice of words as well as your name. My benchmark for an incredible pastie is a small pastie place just west of the bridge( The Mackinaw bridge, Michigan ). When I went to Superior Pasties with my kids, we ordered the Beef, steak and Polish pastie. Yum. I have found a restaurant in the lower peninsula that is just as good as my benchmark :-) The Owner of this restaurant is such a very nice man. To tell you, my kids always collect a quarter from me whenever I swear. During our order, he said the mildest of cuss words while telling us a story. My daughter said to me - Dad, he owes us a quarter. At home we have a swear jar. Yes, I am a major contributor. I told him( the owner of the restaurant ) what my daughter said to me and he immediately gave my daughter a $1 for his fine. He apologized to my daughter and said that he was wrong for saying that. Sorry to say I did not enjoy my meal from here. I grew up eating pasties. I get meat and potatoes type of food isn't necessarily going to be jam packed with the most exotic or spicy flavors but it shouldn't be bland and tasteless either. I had a traditional and it was the blandest thing I have had in ages. I dumped the too dark brown to be real watery gravy over my pasty and it made it look better but it still tasted like almost nothing. I almost dumped the vinegar from my 3 bean salad on it to get some kind of flavor out of it. The crust was very dry without being crispy. The contents were pretty dry and shrunken away from the outer shell. The whole thing just oozed not being freshly made but rather frozen then thawed. Sad to do this to a Mom and Pop place but I do not recommend. Ordered 5 pasties for a group and they were all the same. read more

Most Michiganders can attest to their love for pasties. Every time I make it up north to the U.P. a pasties stop is essential to my mental health. I stopped by this place after my visit lovely visit at Procam Photo & Video Gear across the street. I was famished after my shopping spree; I needed something quick and easy - this place popped up. I walked in and the owners were very pepped and welcoming, it's the same Yoopers friendly attitude I've come across. Very friendly bunch! I ordered the traditional and it was great! I can't complain. Pasties in Livonia! Say "YA"! Was in the area for a class and put 'fast food' into my GPS, saw Superior Pasties and thought I'd give it a try. I had the combo for $6.?? out the door, or dine-in as I had it. Had the steak pasty combo with a Vernors, Better Made BBQ chips and side of slaw - I like to think of it as a "Total MI" combo! The pasty was very tasty and the crust was very good. It was quick and easy and quite a nice lunch stop. Enjoyed talking to Monty, the owner. He asked why I don't have pasties too often and my reason was there is not one near where I work (Downtown Detroit) or my home so I never think of getting one. Way better than a McD lunch! read more
