This store is large and carries a relatively wide variety of products. Best not to come here with expectations of fresh, quality produce or proteins. The app can save you about 20% if you do a big shop and spend at least 20 minutes finding deals. The member rewards program also works with Kings (which has higher quality where it counts, but much higher prices generally). The staff is friendly. It's not that they don't mean well. 4/22/23: Stopped in for a few items. The store is very clean. The Customer Service is excellent. Specifically, the Acme app. had a special type of milk back in stock. When I went to the dairy section, the advertised milk was no where be found. I ran into the dairy service rep John. John was more than happy to go in the back and bring out the special milk. In addition, some of Acme's prices are lower than neighboring markets. Just be sure to use their app. to receive the lower prices. Thanks again to John for excellent customer service! read more

I don't normally come to acme since it is a little far from me, but I decided to give it a try because I needed avocados and Shoprite NEVER has ripe avocados- plus they always go from not ready to bad. I always wanted this Acme to be a good market to shop in. It's convenient and has ample parking. Over the years I've returned on numerous occasions because it is so conveniently located, but each time I go it seems to get progressively worse. Clearly people shop here, but I have to assume it's for the only reason that I've shopped here, it's convenient. The market isn't very clean and always seems to be out of stock on many items. My most recent visit finally encouraged me to write a review. I needed a few ingredients for a recipe; items that every supermarket should carry, such as cucumbers, garlic, scallions, tomatoes and cabbage. They were out of every single one. Actually that's not true. There were several cucumbers and a few tomatoes remaining, but they were rotting on the shelf with visible signs of mold. It was produce that shouldn't be sold, much less consumed. I pointed this out to the gentleman working in the produce area, only to be told "Yeah, we're out of that". When suggested that the moldy items be removed, he didn't acknowledge me, made no effort to remove the rotten items and quickly returned to whatever it was that he was doing. At this point I asked for the store manager, who volunteered to see if any of these items where in the back. Needless to say, there wasn't any. Not a single cucumber, scallion, tomato, cabbage or garlic bulb was to be found. These aren't exotic items. They're staples. I pointed out the rotting items to him as well. To which he commented "That's not good.", but made no effort to have it removed (at least while I was there). I ended up leaving without any of these basic items, and having wasted 40 minutes of my time. With a great deal of frustration I returned to my car and drove to another market down the street, which thankfully had everything I needed, and nothing was rotting on the shelf. It may have taken a few years, but I've learned my lesson, that a convenient location isn't worth the nightmare of shopping at a market like this. read more

This review is strictly based on deli and the fried chicken. Whoever slices the cold cuts obviously cares. They wrap them butcher style and the meats are fresh and not wet or slimy. If your wrapping my cold cuts in wax paper then butcher paper then plastic zip bag you are doing an excellent job. Also, the fried chicken at this place is by bar the best, would blow any chain out of the water. Deli staff I salute you. The store is a former A&P that has since been slightly refreshed/refurbished. It continues to have a really weird layout that is similar to the Shop Rite on N Franklin Ave in Nutley, where the store is oddly chopped in half and the some of the aisles are unusually short. The cheese selection in this store is really awful and is broken up into three different areas, which is incredibly frustrating, and they do not label cheese very well (rennet vs. vegetarian). The yogurt selection is also really poor. Produce is fresh and well laid out. It does have a small kosher section (albeit dry goods, no kosher meat). One advantage is that you do not need a shopper's card to take advantage of sales and I got a great deal on the coffee that I normally buy. Staffers are nearly non-existent. Perhaps I was there during a shift change. There were several who were talking to each other at the end of the aisle about leaving for the day while I was climbing to reach for something. The store was empty. One other advantage is that there is ample parking, something that is an anomaly in this part of town. Overall, this store lacks proper flow. It is unclear where to enter and exit, and at times it looks like people are entering the store through the exit area which makes it awkward. Prices are decent particularly for Montclair. I don't know whether I would come here instead of Stop and Shop in Belleville unless there was a sale (like they had on my coffee) for basics. read more

Went in for a few things for my first time ever shopping at a Acme. Waited on a line for cold cuts. I was the second customer of the three waiting. The working slicing the meat worked extra slow and after standing there for 8 minutes with only one guy in front of me that was being helped I couldn't wait any longer. So I decided to pick up some of the prepackaged lunch meat. I got the applegate turkey and provolone cheese. As I was In a rush I grabbed it and ran to check out. When opening it the next day to eat I came to see that although it "doesn't expire till December 3rd) it was all moldy! I will never be back ! Update : I went back and returned the cheese and the manager refunded me full price without giving me a problem at all. read more

This store is clean and fairly new. Their setup is a little different than other grocery stores that I've been to- normally the produce and dairy are on opposite sides of the store. ACME has all perishables on the same side, which I think is really convenient, especially if you're just grabbing a few necessities. However, I think their overall selection and variety is lacking. They have some "speciality" brands that aren't sold everywhere which is nice, but their produce and meat selections aren't that broad, which is disappointing. I would come here more frequently if I had a wider selection to choose from. read more

Clean, bright, and well lit newish store with several specialty items I can't find elsewhere. Extensive cheese selection, which is handy for entertaining. But trying to find a human at the deli or seafood counters was impossible when I visited this past Saturday at 4pm. At least an 8 minute wait for someone to appear at each department. I had catering platter orders to pick up, and sadly, my crabcakes were the worst I've ever had. Soggy and tasteless breadcrumb balls with slight notes of tunafish is the only way to describe them. Store organization is strange, and many produce items are overpriced. Sale flyer items might be the only reason to come in. And it would take one serious sale to get me to return. read more

Acme is okay if you are in a pinch for an item, and don't want to travel too far from Montclair. The store is pretty small, but has a decent selection of items. The produce and meats are farm fresh. However, my biggest qualm with Acme are the prices. Maybe it is the Montclair location; but a few simple groceries will end up costing you a pretty penny. The only thing that kills the vibe for me are the cashiers. The ones that work on Tuesday nights are the worst. Rude as hell. lol When it's close to closing time (lets say an hour or so before they close or maybe way before that who knows) they don't give no f's about the customers. We used to have an Acme in Montclair. In fact, there used to be Acme's in every town around here. There was even one in Clifton up until last year. And they all closed for a reason. I had high hopes that this store would transform into a great local market when A&P closed, but unfortunately, Acme is just another big, corporate, out-of-touch supermarket company. They have LOCAL signs everywhere, but it felt completely generic. They have removed some of the local brands that A&P carried, like Nanina's in the Park marinara or fra diavolo sauce, and there wasn't any Calandra's bread! Every supermarket in New Jersey carries Calandra's for a reason--it is the best. Instead, I tried their own Acme baguette. It was obviously frozen and "baked" in store. Maybe in Idaho, people like to eat terrible supermarket bakery products, but this is North Jersey. We have REAL bakeries here and we prefer real bread. When I got to the register, I asked the cashier how I enter my My Mixx number so I could get the savings from the e-coupons I had added to my account at home. She looked at me and said "what is My Mixx"? Then the cashier next to her said the same thing. Really? There was a giant My Mixx poster hanging right over us, which I pointed out to her, but she had no clue what it is. It is obvious that these people weren't trained or shown any respect by the new owners. I will be walking the extra 500 meters to Kings for great selection and customer service, as well as a supermarket owned and operated by local people--not Idahoans! RIP Acme! read more

I've just moved to the area and needed a supermarket - STAT. My old market was Pathmark in WNY, NJ and I loved it! When Acme came to town, I was not pleased, but between Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Acme, I managed. After reading so many horrible reviews here for Acme, I was not surprised. Once II checked them out this past Saturday, I am surprised. It's a LOT nicer than its counterparts in Edgewater and WNY at least in terms of variety. I love the produce section! I love the Acme in Montclair. For one thing, they don't have self-checkout lanes. I like human beings. The self-checkout lanes kill jobs for people and it's not any faster. Also, even though the roadrunner cartoons made Acme the generic brand for everything Wile E. Coyote bought, Acme doesn't make generic versions of name brand products. You may be thinking, "Why is this a good thing? I love getting the same product for less money." Well it's not the same product, it's usually inferior in quality and made with cheaper ingredients, but people will grab the cheaper product most often. Also it's not fair to the name brands. Someone used their creativity to make a product. They spend millions developing their product and packaging, doing research, and marketing. Then if they become successful, the supermarkets come in and steal their idea, steal their packaging, and make it 80 cents cheaper because they don't have to pay a distributor to get it into the stores. Yeah, so Acme doesn't do that. Sure, I could just choose not to buy the generic brands in other stores, but I like supporting ethical businesses. And, Acme is a company with a known policy of hiring special needs people. This is great. I used to work in the special needs field and there are so many people in this population who are able to work and want to work, but opportunities are scarce. Bravo, Acme, I know that these job opportunities make a gigantic difference in people's lives. So, Acme preserves jobs for people, doesn't engage in predatory business practices against food producers, and they give opportunities to people with special needs. Are they the cheapest store around? In Montclair, maybe, but you can definitely go one town over for better prices. For me, I would rather support an ethical business than save 29 cents here and there. Plus, their food is good quality. Their baked goods are delicious and actually surprisingly inexpensive, and they've got a lot of great quality meats and cheeses. read more

The selection was limited, the staff was less than friendly and helpful, and it was absolutely packed to the gills with other customers who were not following social-distancing protocols. Awful and disgusting. I usually only go here if I need a quick essential but no longer will. I ran here quickly to grab three ingredients for soup as my family is sick. There were no express lines open. There was a person ahead of me in line and no one behind me. I noticed that my can of veggie broth was dented and asked the clerk if I could go exchange it quickly and he said yes. I was literally gone under a minute and he moved my other two items and began ringing a person with a full cart of groceries up. He then simply pointed to my items which he moved and said nothing. I found this very rude. The quality of the food is usually bad too but it is a convenient location. However I will not go back. read more

Place smelled like dead rodents for a straight month (refrigerated dead rodents if that makes it sound more appealing) .. shopping carts are usually filthy (could use a weekly hose down maybe?), the staff (under 50 y.o) are horrible.. I once waited for about 10 minutes (no line) while one of the employees cursed and carried on with the cashier about his coupon for wet wipes not taking off the right amount.. (#scandal) Felt like there was a worldstar style brawl about to erupt.. buut, they have very reasonable prices and a vast selection. I'll give em that. read more

Nice supermarket with a large variety of food items. Their prices are a little higher than similar supermarkets. Their store label items are greatly priced. I enjoy the monthly sales instead of weekly sale on certain items. Those can be found in the booklet not the wewkly flier. It is a little cramped in the store though. I will NEVER shop at Acme Supermarket in Upper Montclair ever again. I shopped there this past Monday evening and Tuesday morning I discovered that the Lucerne cheddar cheese was moldy, the bag of mixed green lettuce was mostly wilted, and a third of the red and green grapes had fungus (none of which was noticeable before opening the packaging). On a positive note, I was given my money back. Unfortunately this was not the first time I ended up with rotten, expired and undercooked food (from the prepared food section) from this store. This experience is obviously not an anomaly, but their decision not to care what quality of food they sell. Why can't Montclair have a good supermarket?!?! read more

I prefer Shoprite in Bloomfield for low priced groceries. Unlike Acme it uses the chip, and doesn't demand ID like you're a criminal. Add to that, Acme's new cashiers are often rude, and make shopping there an unpleasant experience. A few examples: 1) One cashier asked me if I wanted to play the Monopoly sweepstakes game the store is using to promote itself. I said no. He replied, "Sorry, you'll have to take these tickets anyway since I'm supposed to give them to you", and stuck them in my bag despite my protests. 2) The conveyor belt at one checkout aisle was wet, so I asked the cashier to wipe it before setting down my groceries. Without looking she said "It's just water" and did nothing. I insisted she wipe it, so she very huffily got a paper towel and swiped the liquid once--without disinfectant. Now I wonder about the store's sanitary practices. 3) Today a cashier yelled at me ("I said SLIDE!") when out of habit I tried to use the chip function on the credit card machine. Then, when I explained that I didn't want her using plastic bags because I try to avoid them, she looked annoyed and muttered something under her breath. I don't think it was a compliment. My advice: go elsewhere. King's is just up the road! read more

Pretty disappointed by this store. The prices are way too high for items you can get cheaper elsewhere. Some of the staff is super sweet (the lady at customer service), while other seem to need some Disney training. I worked for years at grocery store, I know it is tough and can be depressing. Clerks think the "self" scanners mean they don't have to do anything but tap their cards occasionally and swan around chatting, inspecting their nails. No one cares if you are physically struggling with the many times you have to lift items to accommodate the computerized insult machine, poising your bags on the small space allotted before hoisting them back over to your cart, which still has stuff in it to scan. Its many times more effort than the normal loading your cart in the aisles and loading the conveyor belt, then loading your car. That was enough already. Having to do their job for them, in poorer circumstances as to workflow, is too much. 4 standing around, while the salad bar rotted in place at 10:30 pm. Absurdistan is Acme land. read more

This Acme is the worst Acme I have been to. The Acme Markets down the shore are stocked better and much cleaner. I only go to Acme for 1 or 2 items and do not do my weekly grocery shopping there. I usually go on Sunday afternoon. I find in general Acme is expensive and does not have the variety Shop Rite has. Some of the cashiers have attitudes and act like they are doing you a favor by checking you out. I also agree with another poster who stated the set up of the store is weird. Look at this poor excuse for a special. They put live lobsters out at Acme Food stores all across the nation, on ice in small tiny bags and slowly bringing their temperatures down so that they just sit there and die. This is a really poor showing on their part and I cannot lie idle anymore. As I went to find a manager to talk to about this cruelty to animals I asked a man in a polo named Ignacio if he was the manager. He said yes and laughed at me before I even had a chance to speak. When I asked him why he laughed he said he was being personable. I didn't say anything funny, in fact I didn't say anything at all besides ask him if he was the manager. he made absolutely no sense. I told him about the lobster situation and he said this is how EVERY ACME does it. He said this is how all 180 acme stores are doing it. This manager was so absolutely rude and unprofessional. This store has a very eclectic group of workers, all who seem to be very nice but the place is highly understaffed. We go on Saturday evenings around 8:30 and there is only one cashier working which tends to be okay because there is NO ONE in the store. Reminds me of the old A&P the prices aren't bad and sometimes you'll hit it right and get a buy one get one free (I did with chicken the other day!) but be careful and check the dates on things here. read more

Look, every supermarket has their issues. I go to King's, ShopRite and Acme here in Montclair. I've had issues in each one, but as a whole, they all serve their purposes. One of the main reasons i shop at Acme is because of some of the workers. The store manager Walter is a gentleman. The frozen food manager is very nice always saying hello as i walk down the aisle and always offering to help or answer my questions. Most of all is an assistant manage named Marilyn. She is always upbeat and very very kind bending backwards to make you happy when you do have a return or a complaint. She's a gem for sure and an asset to this location. I owned a leading retail business in another North Jersey town. Trust me.... dealing with the public is difficult and you can't understand how difficult people can be until you are on the other side of the counter. Staff need training in how to pack groceries. Raw items like uncooked chicken, fish and other meat should NOT be in the same bag as ready-to-eat sandwich meat or rotisserie chicken or fresh fruit or veg. Raw items should be in a bag of their own. Hard items go at the bottom, soft and easily bruised/crushed items (herbs, pears, avocados, bananas and chips) go at the top. read more
