I found my trainer Alex by reading the positive reviews on this Yelp page. Having just moved to Brooklyn I wanted to find out more about the possibilities here and as I hadn't been working out for 3 months I needed someone to get me back on track again. I've worked out a lot with trainers in various parts of the world so I'm experienced in stating that Alex is one of the best I've worked with. Alex really listens to your concerns and creates a program to best suit your needs and goals. I really like the way he constructs the sessions with a good warming up, cardio, muscle/core training and cooling down. I'm amazed at how much we fit in one hour! The cardio and interval training really increased my fitness levels. We work out in Fort Greene park around the monument and I couldn't think of a better place to be. Having always been inside the gym with trainers, this has been a welcome change. Every session has been different and we never get caught up in the same routine which is great for someone like me who gets bored easily. We have used all kinds of different equipment from kettle bells to bands and balls. Alex is a very likable and pleasant personal trainer who never shouts and really makes you feel good about your accomplishments. He has a very positive attitude and he knows a lot about nutrition. I'm generally reluctant to see trainers, since I'm a bit of an introvert and averse to excessive pushiness. This isn't to say that pushiness is a bad thing, but it usually comes in the guise of a BOOT CAMP with YELLING and CHEERS. The amazing thing about Active Brooklyn (in particular, about Alex Grammer, who worked with me), is that he was focused, intent on dialing into how I work and what motivates me, and a great trainer overall. I got a better workout than I've ever driven myself to achieve on my own, felt great about it, and left motivated, proud and healthy. The entire time, I knew that Alex was observing closely, pushing me (but in a smart, less abrasive style), and calibrating my workout to make it more effective. i did some personal training with Alex G and also attended his bootcamp sessions in the park in BK. he is thorough (asks lots of questions to see what you want, fitness level etc.), very knowledgeable about nutrition & the way your body works, and knows how to get you results that you want. the thing that i really like about training with alex is that he has knowledge about a lot of different ways of exercising - yoga/weights/kettlebells etc. and can incorporate all of these into your workouts. I am not a gym rat, and can't stand the whole roided meathead thing, and alex is the complete opposite of that! a nice, normal, funny guy who can either push you so hard that you throw up, or can really tone down the work outs to fit your fitness level but still push you. I don't write reviews all the time. However, I felt compelled to write one about personal trainer Alex Grammer. His style is very unique: he asks what you like when it comes to exercise. Then he incorporates that into the workout. He motivates you while challenging you to do the exercises that he has tailor made for your fitness level. Each workout is different ; never boring, as he mixes cardio and strength training throughout the session. Alex exercises with you; so you essentially have a workout buddy who is in your corner cheering you on...not barking at you to keep going. At the end of my calorie torching workout I was exhausted! It's hard finding the right personal trainer in New York City. If you are looking to have fun while you sweat I highly recommend Alex. read more

I trained with Alex Grammer for 6 weeks, and it was the best investment that I have ever made in my health and well-being. Alex is fun, energetic and knowledable. He has a creative and varied approach to working out different parts of the body, so my workout session was always interesting and challenging. I was amazed that for the majority of our workout sessions, we did not use a single weight or cardio machine. I learned how to use the bosu, kettle ball and weight bars, which I had never tried before. Alex is a great listener, and was always open to my feedback and even helped me devise my own workout plan so I could continue after my training sessions expired. If you would like to tone up fast, and establish some good workout habits that will keep you fit after you've reached your goals, Alex G. is the man for you! I went from being able to do just a couple pushups and barely make it through a cardio class to being able to do 20 (male) push-ups and make it through a cardio class / 3 mile run without losing my breah after participing in Alex's boot camp training session. I now work out mostly on my own, but incorporate the strength training and stretching moves that Alex taught me. He is creative and will leave you feeling stronger than you ever felt before. I don't find anything fun at 7:30 a.m., let alone exercise. And yet... Alex Grammer made morning workouts enjoyable when I trained with him this past summer and fall. I started training with Alex and considered myself a big wimp - low endurance, weak core, etc. Alex pushed me to understand that I COULD meet physical challenges, and with his guidance, I did. Alex knew how to make the workouts just extremely effective, and just difficult enough so I wouldn't throw in the towel. Alex is a great trainer - he customized the workouts to my needs and always pushed me just a little beyond what I thought I could to. Sometimes it was a little painful, but I always left our training sessions with a sense of accomplishment, and, more importantly, results. After 10 sessions with Alex, I felt stronger and more flexible. Alex varied the workouts so things never got boring or repetitive, was always extremely attentive and enjoyed coming up with new and challenging workouts. Alex is a wonderful trainer. I was reluctant at first to do training again because of previous experiences. Alex gives you a great work out and is polite in the process. I do a lot of walking and carrying heavy bags for my job as a home care nurse, which was taking a toll on my lower back and shoulder. Working out with Alex has eliminated my back and shoulder problems by improving my overall strength and endurance. Not even using a rolling bag or physical therapy has helped as much as our workouts. I took Alex's boot camp training this past spring and summer in Prospect Park. I found myself signing back on month after month because the workouts were invigorating and strengthening and because Alex is a funny guy and a knoweldgable trainer who knew how to push us hard enough to get results but not so hard we burned out. Alex's morning boot camp in the park is a fun, vigorous workout. Cardio, strength, and core work are mixed into each session through a variety of exercises. The routines change daily keeping it fresh and interesting and I always leave feeling energized.
