CHARGED MONTHLY 2 YEARS AFTER CANCELLATION I moved 2 years ago. I spoke to the then manager, Bruce, who informed me my account was cancelled. Do not sign up with Retro Fitness Park Slope. I have been trying to cancel my membership at Retro Fitness Park Slope since the pandemic began. They repeatedly ignored my emails and phone calls. I tried to cancel my membership within the allotted period and they conveniently weren't available. When I went in person, conveniently, no one with "authority" was there. The person at the front desk said I'd have to send a certified letter or come back later. I wish they would at least respect the new law (Senate Bill S1475A passed in 2020) designed to crack down on gyms that make it nearly impossible to get out of a contract. They even charged me for personal training I never did or received. I checked the contract and its not even my signature. So sketchy. read more

Yikes! Only about $25 a month to join, and they finally removed the mandatory year contract, buttttt they make it impossible to cancel. They tell you to come in in person, but then the manager, the only person who can do cancellations, is somehow always out. Then they tell you to come in with a letter stating that you'd like to cancel, but then when you do, they still keep charging your account and tell you nope they never received your letter. After reading the hundreds of reviews that say the exact same thing, it's clear that Retro Fitness is nothing but a front for high fraud. It's only a matter of time before they go Belly up. You can't make your fortune by stealing indefinitely. Great space and equipment. Most staff is friendly. Been a member here for a couple of years and use other retro facilities in the area, and as of late the music has been borderline unbearable. There used to be a lot of different music and not everyone loved everything, but lately its the same 10-15 top 40 songs that I don't think anyone wants to hear. Sure we can wear headphones, but people like to talk to each other, and the internet doesn't work in this building. Just some constructive criticism. read more

Friend of mine been taking boxing lessons in this gym, says coach Steve is great and I should give it a try. Went to the Monday beginner's class. Wow. Steve is indeed a great coach. Some fellow classmates are more experienced and they are very supportive. Good vibes. I have always wanted to take up some kind of martial arts but feared of damaging the body. But I'd have no concerns learning boxing from Steve. He's obviously very experienced at teaching and his methods are gentle, safe, and sound. Cool guy, too. read more

I was hesitant to sign up after reading similar reviews last year, but signed up since it was close to my apartment. Cancelled my membership back in April, still was charged in May/June, now I've been going back and forth trying to get a refund. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I signed up because Retro was offering child care. I show up with my child on three occasions, only to be told that no child care is available, even though I went during the child care advertised on the website. RETRO FITNESS LIED about the services offered. I decided to cancel in May, I called over 10 times, I never got through. I go to cancel in person in June, and they said Verizon has not been there to fix their phones in months, and they are not sure when their phone lines will be up and running. So I get call back about my desire to cancel, and they said regardless of false advertising, they will not let me out of my contract. The manager didn't have the decency to call me or write me back, I was informed about their unwillingness to void my contract by the front desk person. I was a loyal customer loved this gym until they kept on charging my credit card after I suspended both membership of which I had both my wife due to the pandemic. I only found out of the charges after the charges were made. I wrote emails even came to the gym and spoke to a manager who suspended the accounts. Suddenly I get a letter from collections apparently they only suspended one membership not the other after specifically have them lookup both accounts. Came back to the gym to have it resolved but the manager said she can't help me it's in collections and the manager i spoke to before longer works there. I canceled immediately and now going back and forth with collections over charges for a gym membership that I haven't been to in over 19 months. CIRO ITS CALLED CELLULAR REPEATERS for normal reception in concrete buildings. I wouldn't need your Wi fi. I can use LTE . So don't give me you can't fix the problem because the building is old. Real reason is your boss just doesn't want to put the effort in .. to address this problem. It's to cost effective so the solution is customers will adapt. When I see bs I call it out . This is a very good all around gym. But my review is with regards to the cancellation process. I have read all the reviews to get a little background information before I went in to cancel. They caused me concern and thusly, I waited to go in a little longer than I should have. I have not been going to the gym for awhile, partially due to the fact that I have an injury and need surgery soon. However when I went in to cancel yesterday, and had my documents with me, it was a super easy process. Thanks to associate Dylan (who actually signed me up 2 1/2 years ago at this location), and also to the Manager Maria F- they were very friendly and accommodating. It would be nice if they didn't still charge you 2 more months, but that's the company policy. If I join a gym again, it'll be here. read more

The gym is not too bad but the worst customer service ever especially when it come for quitting the gym, for some reasons they give me hard time with their process they want you to mail a letter to different state and you to notify them before 2 month maybe and I did all of that and still don't work. and When you call them forget it they hold you on the line for hours so I ended up canceling my bank account to avoid the monthly charges! I went into retro-fitness and was told I could sign up for a month membership because I was getting married in 6 weeks and I already have a trainer at another gym. This is closer to my house. I came back and paid for a day pass the same week to make sure this was the right place and then I went back to sign up for the month and was told they don't offer month memberships by the same person I had discussed it with the two previous times. I then paid again for a day pass and left my number to have the manager call me, that was Monday and today is Friday- no one was has called me from the retro fitness park slope location. I've been a Retro Fitness member for the last 5 years. I was at the Williamsburg location at first and for the last 1 1/2 at this South Slope location. I just canceled my membership as I really hate the fact that it is in the same building as a methadone clinic. The clinic is on the 2nd floor and the gym is on the 3rd. There will be shady characters in the stairwell, elevator and hanging out outside. There's a security guard out front but who knows what could happen. Also, if you are walking to this location, it is either through the Lowes parking lot, or through the Garbage truck parkings. Not a pleasant experience at all. The gym itself is clean, spacious and not at all busy (I usually go in the mornings). There are lockers and showers available. read more

On the 2nd floor in the same building is a really gross Methadone clinic. Don't even walk out into that floor, avoid it. If you take the stairs avoid the Y stairway. And be careful who you speak to outside of The fitness center. The staff who work at the clinic are snarly and rude. But the fitness center is great! read more

This gym is a scam. I tried to cancel my membership in person, as they prefer. I called ahead to make an appointment. When I showed up they would not cancel because a manager was not there (even though I made an appointment specifically to cancel). The women at the front desk told me they are no longer allowed to cancel memberships because the managers told them not to do it anymore. After seeing the games they intended to play, I called my card company to block all the future charges and sent an email telling them I'd like to cancel. They wrote me back and said I need to cancel in person. When I showed up two days later they told me it was a new billing cycle, I needed to pay $20 to cancel. I told them they are not getting $1 from me because we've been through that already. So then I sent a letter certified mail with tracking to cancel, as stated in the contract terms. Shortly after they put over $200 unpaid on my credit report. They claim they never got my letter despite the fact that i emailed them the scanned tracking receipt from the post office. When I tried to settle this with them again they offered me a discount - I can give them $50 and sign up for a new membership contract. What a joke! Stay far away from this place! read more

visited brooklyn park slope gym used to work in the neighborhood and decided to stop at a nearby location and I went in last week Friday just inquiring about the gym memberships. There was this very super friendly girl working their she greeted me good morning and if i needed help with and i told her what i needed help with , overall amazing staff she gave me a pamphlet and told me i can come back to try the gym free for a day and i will be coming back ! off course i got her name Tamera,she was so sweet and the prices are very affordable ! cant wait to go try my free trial ! and they have zumba classes! read more

I am a fan of free weights, they have a free weight section. I wish they had an extra leg squatting station. They definitely don't let you know when signing up there is a methadone program in the building of the gym. Upon entering the facility you are riding the elevator or taking the stairs with drug addicts. However them withholding that information during sign up is still not enough to waive 2 month cancellation notice fee. read more

Terrible customer service! I went in with my walking cast and cane and a note from my podiatrist after a surgery and, they refused to stop charging me for months I couldn't be there. They "froze" my account but, even when I had to quit all together because I had no assurance of when I could workout again they said they would charge those months regardless. Corporate gave me the run around. Gyms are strict but, this gym is devoid of compassion and, human decency. The facilities are not great and, not worth it. read more

Horrible customer service, lazy staff that never has the answers to ANYTHING. The new manager (Sideah) is worse then the last, she's rude and inconsiderate. The machines are rarely wiped and some seem to always need maintenance. My membership has expired but because of an employee negligence, the month to month membership wasn't cancelled correctly. Now I'm being penalized for the employee's error, they charged me a total of 4 months plus an annual fee. So to clarify, my 5 star rating is solely because my trainer, Gabriel, is outstanding. The gym is good, clean, the staff is very nice and polite. My main complaint is that the gym is on the 3rd floor and, as someone stated before, there is a methadone clinic on the 2nd floor. This wouldn't bother me as much if the elevator was faster (I have a foot issue so the stairs are not really an option for me, plus that's creepy as well lol). I was thinking about swapping locations but my trainer is the real reason I stay. He is SUPER encouraging, super professional, and makes me feel comfortable. I have had trainers before at different gyms but none of them made me feel as comfortable and motivated as Gabriel. I am overweight but he does not make me feel bad about myself, as others have in the past. He keeps it straight forward but with such a way that I feel motivated and not discouraged. I realllly hope the center knows how wonderful he is. It is not easy to find someone who can make me work crazy hard while being kind. If anyone is on the fence about signing up with a trainer, I wholeheartedly recommend Gabriel! (Just don't take my appointment time! hahaha) read more

I LOVE Retro Fitness!! They have such a broad range of trainers and classes and equipment. I find the facility to be clean and the staff very friendly. Recently, a truly excellent trainer, Suzanne, covered some 9am classes. She is incredible!!! I honestly think that her class is the best!! Great cardio, great strength, core, she hits it all. She's so strong and inspiring!!! Not to mention her classes were packed and full of great energy. Please add her to the morning roster of classes!!! I brought a printed letter months in advance of moving to establish documentation of the date I wanted my membership to be cancelled, and I came in person several subsequent times to confirm with staff that they did indeed cancel my membership. Turns out, they didn't, as I'm STILL being charged several months later. When I call the gym, no one answers. I cannot get in contact with any staff to resolve this issue.
