Unsure if you're really at an "upscale" fitness club? Here's three ways to tell the difference that I learned from my time at Club One: 1) There's huge stacks of clean towels all over the locker room, and there's nothing stopping you from walking out with a bunch of them 2) Everyone goes around everywhere barefoot giving 0 f***s about possible athlete's foot 3) The locker room doesn't smell like anything. At all. If I was a hobo in Petaluma I'd seriously consider making Club One my base camp. With the shampoo, spray deodorant, aftershave, lotion, blow dryers and whatnot they have laying out, you could go through your whole morning grooming routine and no one would look at you funny. Though I guess the $100-ish monthly dues are hobo-prohibitive. Then again, if you were like on SSI or something, and couldn't quite afford rent, but had a nice camping spot in the hills or were living in a van or something, I guess it would be a good deal for a place to shower and lounge all day. Then again (again), they probably quietly eye you up for Towel Theft Potential when you sign up.If you're an older guy with an uneven tan and you don't use Just For Men Touch Of Grey, you're out the door bro. Don't mind me, I just enjoy running through doomsday scenarios like this in my head. Anyway, I was just taking some classes here and am not a member, but afterwards I used my debonair wit and charm to impersonate a member of the 1% and wander around checking the place out. Weight room looks pretty great. Really nice pool. Saunas in the gents locker room. Swanky environs all around. Massages and lady spa stuff. If I lived in Petaluma and were rich I'd definitely look into it. read more

Pros; Nice gym, pretty clean! Cons; Sauna is really small and they have plenty of space in building they could of allowed for larger one. The sauna is often broken and they claim its cause someone puts water on the heater. Most sauna heaters are designed to pour water on. Perhaps a better more expensive built to last heater would solve that? The sauna door has no spring hinge on it and is sagging leaving a gap for air exchange and I have written in about with no results. They have no wet sauna. Last con, the towels are like sand paper with a 1 thread count, it take 2 or 3 to dry off. read more

I joined Club One shortly after the Petaluma club opened and have been there nearly every day since. The club facilities are clean and spacious with a great variety of equipment and classes that really help keep me interested. I go in the mid-mornings and there's always plenty of room and equipment. The executive locker room (a bit of a splurge) is nearly always empty which makes Club One feel like my private club. I've been training weekly with Jack Cotter, and he's kept me on track with my goals, both helping me to lose weight and build strength, flexibility, and balance. Jack is an older trainer (older than my 53 years anyway) and I really appreciate the realistic yet inspirational goals he has helped me set. Twice weekly spin classes with Charlene keep my blood pumping and my heart strong, and weekly yoga class with Carla has made a big difference in flexibility. She's one of the best group instructors in the area and I've followed her from club to club to club. One of the biggest surprises, however, has been my weekly Pilates sessions with Jeanette Newman. I had taken Pilates mat classes before, but her very clear and specific one-on-one instruction gave me a completely different idea of what I was capable of and what Pilates could do for me. Jeanette has worked very patiently with me and in a way that helped me perfect my form and get much, much more out of the time spent on the reformer. With Jeanette's help I have improved my posture, increased core strength and flexibility, and adjusted my gait to the point that I no longer feel the day-to-day aches and pains I had assumed would be mine for life. I stand taller and feel better, thanks to Jeanette, Pilates, and Club One! read more

The club seems to be going through a rough process from the old Club One owners. The club is above nice and is in a perfect location. The new managers are going a little cheap and it is noticing. Many of the fitness machines are not being fixed quickly. It is taking them days to a week to fix, so I couldn't ride the bike yesterday. They turned down the water pressure in the showers and they are not as nice anymore. It was great to shower there in the mornings, but now it is not enjoyable. Great location and great building. Do not ruin it by going cheap. The membership is expensive! read more

I tried this place out for a month after finding a post-Christmas deal. I think I actually found the deal on yelp. Overall I really enjoyed coming here, and if I wasn't back to the lifestyle of a starving student making negative dollars, I'd probably like to still be a member. Likes: -Got the best massage of my life here from Destry - 1 hr for $55 since I found the massage deal on yelp. -Really nice pool, there's a pool for kids to play in, and a hot tub. -The locker rooms were really well maintained, and had some amenities like lotion, mouthwash, q-tips, fresh towels galore. -Variety of classes available -Clean, new. -Occasionally I find decent promotional offers - I suggest looking for one if you're uncertain about this gym Dislikes: -A little small! -Regular membership is high priced -Children may be found here. There is a family friendly pool and lounge area, so that's probably a bonus for many. -Hot tub: plenty of wrinkly old men trying to game it as much as possible. -Staff could be a little fiesty. -Entrance to the parking lot is a little weird to find. read more

The Good... FACILITIES: Newly built [as gyms go] with wide open spaces, new and modern equipment, clean locker rooms with amenities, and very nice pool for both lap swimmers and a different one for kids. CLIENTS/CUSTOMERS: Upper middle class white Americana, families and singles, a crowd with whom you can be very comfortable. The Bad and Ugly ... STAFF: My experience began and ended with Nick Hernandez (The membership representative) A nice looking tall and fit "Gym kinda guy" that was pompous, pedantic and condescending beyond imagination. He was judgmental given the above [see customers] and I in my "home-improvement" garb, thus making me not seem as rich or able to pay what is a reasonable and low monthly fee. He rushed me through the tour about as quickly as a diuretic induced run for the toilets. In short, he was more concerned with showing the fire exists then the gym. I might give the place a chance but will surely make sure I do so after he is fired or re-trained. read more

The first thing you would wonder when you enter this gym is... "Is this a gym?? ". Seriously! The first floor more or less looks like a hotel lobby! If you are a serious bodybuilder, I have got some bad news for you.. The weight training area is really small. I have been a member of multiple gym and this one is the best so far. I have two small children and the playcare is amazing. The staff is friendly and the time allotted for each child is more than enough to get your workout on and then relax in the sauna after. The kids love it and I feel like they are safe in their care. read more

This place has brought me an IMMENSE amount of joy. 2.5 hours of childcare to start, fantastic classes (love Cindy and Lindsey's classes) and state of the art facilities. Also the food is great! By far the fanciest health club in the North Bay, Club One is packed with ubercool health equipment, yet remains very spacious and comfortable. This is the country club for those who don't need golf or tennis. The staff is very, very professional. So far, they have abstained from agressively pushing "additional services", like other clubs. If you head down to check it out, go see Maya. One of the coolest things to do is to work out on the deck overlooking the pool. While up top, you can spin, row or do your best Indiana Jones workout with the new giantic ropes workout. Whatever you do, don't be "the creepy guy" staring at bikinis - you'll ruin the vibe. Take the Club Power class by Peggy - the quickest way to burn calories by getting your ass kicked UPDATE: Liquor licence has been denied - bummer. Healthy people can metabolize alcohol better (scientific fact). Gnats by the pool are gone (thank you Sonoma Mosquito Abatement) read more

I joined before it was even open, hoping it would meet my expectations. It pretty much has. I wish it had a Basketball court but I joined knowing it did not. This club has it all: - Outdoor Lounge Area - Pools (one with slide) - Great Free Weight Selection - Classes (wish there were a few more early morning options) - Kid's classes and daycare - Plenty of machines This doesn't even cover it all, there are lounge areas inside, they have a member area where you can check your email - how cool is that! This place is clean, great staff, friendly people and staff - this place really says - "come work out". Guess my only complaint, I need to get there more! read more

This is 3 stars for the pool and water slide. The gym is 4-5 stars staff is great. I have three kids a big reason we picked the gym was family swim time and the waterslide. The water slide runs a limited time per year. We called earlier in the day 1-2 hours before the slide started and made sure it was running. When we arrived the life guards said there are too many people in the pool. On a regular basis they close half the pool for paid swim lessons which they never cancel because the pool is too busy. The front desk basically said they are disorganized in the pool area and they understand why we are frustrated but there is nothing they can do??? read more

I love Club One. It's clean, upscale, and has everything I need. I've heard it is expensive (upwards of a hundred a month), but I get my membership free through work. Club One is where I spend 90% of my lunch breaks, and go back to my cube tired and focused. I mostly use the cardio area, but they have a stretching room, a studio for classes, a spin room, and a weight area. I've never had to wait for equipment to be available. They have a nice looking pool area I haven't tried. They have an on site spa that looks really nice but I haven't gotten around to trying that either. They have free day lockers, which is great to keep you stuff safe. My one knock on this place is that there is no basketball or sports type activities available - which is what my husband would really like in a gym, so we haven't signed him up yet. read more

NOTE: I am not a member at this club, so this review is based on a tour of, and communications with, the club. If we end up joining, I will update the review after going a few times. Pros: -VERY helpful and friendly desk worker! She answered all of our questions, was very cheerful, and told us all about the club. We left our email so they could get back to us with pricing info, and they emailed us within a few hours, so that was great. -Very clean and open. -The locker rooms have all the amenities you could want! Mouthwash, hair-dryers, lotion, etc. -Lots of chairs to lounge out by the pool. -Nice, newer exercise equipment. -Beautiful group workout room. -Looks like there is a good variety of group classes, also, the classes meet at convenient times for me. Most classes are free with your membership. -Initiation fee isn't bad. -Good hours (for not being a 24 hour). -Went on a Saturday afternoon, and it was fairly empty. (I don't know what it's like during the week.) Cons: -Not as many weight machines as I thought there would be. -Free weight area isn't very big. -Expensive monthly rates!!! Great club, spacious interior and large weight area. Full of families and young kids so if you are a kid curmudgeon go late. They were advertising a dedicated yoga studio, that did not happen, looks like instead it is a dedicated pilates reformer room, which probably generates more revenue for the club, but the big room kinda sucks for yoga. They need more blocks and straps, punch list item. Weight area is great, lot of space between the benches, and the cable machines are nicely laid out. They have the kettle bells over in the carpeted area with the bosu and physio balls, I think they should be with the free weights, but no one has hassled me about moving them around. The physio balls at both of the Club One facilities I frequent suck, they are too thin and squishy; the thicker SPRI balls are much better. Minor gripes, this is a really nice facility and will be a great place to hang out this summer. read more

I'm so happy I joined Active Sports in Petaluma (formerly Club One). It took me a while to ramp up to using the facility as I was traveling December and January, though now that I have been around - I am so appreciative. First off, the facilities themselves are impeccably clean. I always had shied away from locker rooms in the past, though this is so clean and comfortable that I was even able to get ready for a work commitment after swimming the other day. The staff in the locker room are always super-attentive and very friendly. It feels like being at a resort spa. People treat the equipment with respect and are always making sure it is clean, so there is a great precedent and standard set. Next, the choices for fitness are nearly limitless. There are numerous cardio options, great strength-training possibilities, an Olympic sized lap pool, a separate pool for aerobics and other activities, a pilates room and a couple of other studios for yoga, etc. I am probably still missing something (so go for a preview package that is offered). Not only do you have choices - but also I have found that I am able to access what I need when I show up, which creates a stress-free (other than the workout of course) experience. Finally, the trainers/instructors are phenomenal. So far, I have met with Sarah for one personal training session, Karen and Joey for refining swimming lessons and have taken several yoga classes. All of the sessions have exceeded my expectations. High caliber staff with excellent service! I highly recommend Active Sports in Petaluma. I look forward to experiencing it more consistently as the months progress. read more

Another update... I was not a member of Club One/Active between 2012 and summer 2014. Upon rejoining in August 2014, I also gave the Itrim program a try. Thanks to Itrim, Deb Johansen (who oversees the program), and the trainers who run the Itrim classes, I've lost over 30 pounds and am in better shape now than when I was in my 20's. The group dynamic of Itrim is supportive, encouraging, and made all the difference as I work to improve my health! I continue to appreciate the friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness of the entire facility. And, having the water slide and awesome pool make my husband and I the coolest of uncles and aunts when the nieces and nephews visit! read more

While relatively clean, though typically lacking ANY towels for use after swimming, the staff here is absolutely abysmal. And their membership policies are even worse. It's generally a scam to separate the maximum amount of money from you if and when you decide to cancel your membership. And the staff will do their best to misinform you about their various policies. The pool had a slide our daughter enjoyed, but the outdoor pool was literally useless during the winter because it's cold outside, so we went in to cancel out membership after the warm weather was over. Rather than cancel they said we could pay a Hold Fee of $25, and keep our membership on hold for 6 months, saving the initiation fee when we returned in the summer. This was in the written contract as well, singular FEE, no "monthly" or "recurring" qualifiers...just a Hold Fee of $25. We went ahead with that and they proceeded to take out $25 EVERY month...now we NEVER would have done this if we'd known if it was a recurring monthly fee. Why? BECAUSE IT ADDS UP TO MORE THAN QUITTING AND PAYING A WHOLE NEW INITIATION FEE! This contract will never hold up in court because it is very explicitly singular. Obviously, what they count on is that you won't have the time to file and appear in small claims for $150. In fact, their "quality" staff incredulously asked us, "why would you want to go to court over such a small amount." Effectively they can just take the money from you, because as another user noted before, they MUST have access to a credit card of yours for you to have a membership. Oh, but it doesn't end there. When you DO cancel your membership, you don't just get to cancel at the end of the current month, nope you're going to have to pay for the next month as well. Go into quit on March 7th, you'll have to pay all of March PLUS 7 days into April as well. We will never support Club One again, and encourage you to think twice about joining, because not only will they verbally misrepresent their policies, but they have no hesitation in presenting incorrect written contracts and counting on busy families not having the time to fight them in court read more

Let me start off by saying I've been lifting weights for over 20 years and have learned by now that the gym you lift at can really define how easily you achieve your goals. Club One is ceratinly not the most heavily equipped gym when it comes to weights and machines, but there are plenty of options to accomodate nearly any fitness goal. It is never super crowded and ALWAYS immaculately clean, from the stretching floors to the shower doors. The crowd tends to be a little older and more mature so you don't have to navigate herds of aimlessly chattering bromancers leaning all over the benches and machines all day. Outside of the fitness room, I always grab a chance for a chair massage with David. His strong hands and a well-developed understanding of physiology has helped me not just to ease painful knots but also learn how to avoid recreating the same problem through posture and excercise. read more

This is the way to work out, super fun gym, lots to do. The pools assess my favorite part of it, the biggest bummer is that I was most excited for sauna and it's been broken down in the women's locker since I've started. I would have given 5 stars for the past year+ that I have been going here - but the new child care policy sucks. You HAVE to have a reservation to bring in your kids (which you have to make about a week in advance because of how busy they are) but if you cancel the day of, you get charged $7 per kid. So if you have 3 kids and one gets sick all of a sudden, you're out $21 and you don't get to work out. Add that to the $215 a month dues... and this place starts to feel like it's not so worth the money any more..... read more

I was planning to change gyms. Syneregy had a good list of review. So I decided to try them. Called them to ask about the membership and classes. First of all a very rude sounding front desk woman (who had clearly woken up on the wrong side) answered the phone transferred me to the person in charge of the membership. No one picked up, I left a message. No reply. I called again. Same reaction. I called the third time, not even an apology! Well looks like either they are so full they don't need new customers or they are not professional. I am not sure I have the time or energy to find that out!! read more

Been going to this health club for years, but just joined Yelp so I finally get to give the team a review! The overall experience has been amazing for my husband and me. We're huge fans of the pools (though I do wish they'd up the degrees just a bit more in winter) and I love the Aqua Bootcamp. 4-stars because they should plan ahead to skim leaves out just before morning classes during fall/winter classes when the wind picks up, Club One and Active always did this. Good people, great instructors and very convenient schedule times for classes to accommodate both working professionals and those that are more flexible. I love it. read more

I loved this club when it was Club One. Active Sports club was pretty okay too. I have noticed now that they are Synergy the pools are not maintained with clear blue water like they had been. Also, the locker rooms are not being cleaned as well either. I prefer this club by far over City Sports' filth, but I hope it can get back to where it was! Bummed the water slide is not working either. Why wouldn't that be fixed by summer? read more

A little on the expensive side, however what you get for the money is pretty amazing. From the pools to the gym to the outdoor CrossFit area, this gym is very well rounded. The gym is cleaner than most, and there aren't a bunch of juice heads in the weight area like other gyms. Staff is great and the food options are great. read more

I recently went to go work out using my FULLY PAID membership, I am 16 years old which is the required age to have a membership. As I walked in after being dropped off the man at the desk, named mark, refused to let me workout because I didn't "drive myself here". In what crazy ass world is that a rule? If I have a membership, and am of the correct age it should NOT matter that I can't afford to have my own car and drive myself everywhere. This is completely unfair and it is simply because of my age. Why should I be denied entry to a gym at which I have a membership? Do they expect me to go with my parents every time like I'm a five year old? Somebody please explain how this can be an actual rule. Also, this has happened twice now once to me and once to my friend who is 17 and also has a membership. read more

I started going to club one in Petaluma after a severe back injury and surgery. I found I was no longer able to do any lifting or even walk for long on a tred mill. I stuck to the pool for a month and then joined a Pilates reformer class. After just a month of this class I am so so happy to say that I no longer need to take medication for pain and am able to do other cardio exercises. I find Jeanette and Noa to be very knowledgable in their field's of Pilates instruction. I am very thankful to both of them for giving me my life (movement) back and I recommend Club One's Pilates reformer class to everyone esp. if you have an injury to work through. thankyou kdoo read more

I LOVE this place!! ALWAYS clean! Class schedule is full! Classes are great! Trainers are great! ALL staff members are great! Yes, its probably the most expensive gym in Petaluma... BUT you get what you pay for! I love the fact that they have a towel service, provide shampoo, conditioner, etc and have A LOT of cardio machines! Mark in membership is a great dude. Very friendly, not pushy, super inviting. Always says hello and remembers your name. That's Huge in my book. Very personal. Some of the other front desk staff are duds but most are nice enough. The pool is always crowded so be ready to wait for a lane or to ask to share one. (Awkward but necessary ). No one ever seems to be at the snack bar, I still don't know if they make smoothies or anything? But overall this place is clean, inviting, has new equipment, and not a lot of jocks dropping weights. Only a few . Seems very family friendly and the swim lessons are basically the cutest. I love the new running treadmills !!!! They save my joints, I love to run but traditional treadmills bother my back. The pricing is a bit steep but you get what you pay for !! A quality environment! read more

If you're a guy, Club one has alocated 500 sq ft. of their over 30,000 sq ft. facility to you. The place is shiney and new but it is lacking the appropriate space and equipment to be "legit". As a testimonial to club one all the trainers work out at other clubs. For my short time as a member, I felt insulted for I was spending $170 month for my wife and I only to be snubbed by staff and mangement. apparently we were not cool enough to be acknowledge. I have been to all the "high end" clubs in Sonoma County - Airport, FountainGrove, etc. This by far exceeds all of them. I was always disappointed at other clubs from cleanliness to overall environment. I have been a member since early 2010. The facility is immaculate. They have everything. Cleanliness is clearly as important to them as it is for me. The staff is professional, accommodating and friendly - always a welcome and goodbye coming and going. The facility offers a variety of amenities including lap pool, hot tub, steam, showers, towels, products (shampoo, body wash, mouth wash), lockers and an endless variety of equipment, classes, highly qualified trainers and much more. The massage therapists are great as well. You can get a full massage in the spa or a chair massage near the fire place. They have beautiful lounge areas inside and out including a media center with computers and a printer, tv's throughout, lounge areas outside with comfortable seating, bbqs and don't forget the water slide. Again, I've been to all the clubs and I live and work from home in Guerneville and drive 45 minutes each way just to go to this club. I have a Hybrid SUV so I'm doing the best I can to reduce my carbon footprint given the distance. I could have and should have written this review long ago as I'm very happy here, but I'm doing so now because I was shocked this week by the bizarre and childish behavior of an "adult" club member Sally who has left a review here. While I was on a cardio machine, she started screaming four letter words at a trainer because she was upset that the fitness class was too loud for her. After the trainer was calm and rational with her advising that they would try and accommodate her request to keep the volume of the training session down, she escalated the situation with a hostile verbal assault. This is a high end gym but still a gym, not a meditation retreat. If you want absolute silence, wear ear plugs. I'm sensitive to my environment and it's never bothered me. This members behavior was completely out of line, unreasonable and bizarre for an adult at the very best. Her immediate and extreme hostile demeanor was very unsettling. I don't blame her for quitting the gym, she should be humiliated for her temper tantrum. On that note, the club also offers child care services and family locker rooms for children. I commend the trainer for managing the bizarre situation the best he could on behalf of the club and other club members. Active is a great club. I'm very happy going there, even 45 minutes away. Don't listen to Sally, she's clearly misplaced her medication. Let's hope she finds it before she attacks her own lawn mower for being too loud. read more
