Luma Fitness Review The owner of Luma fitness Connor Waggoner scammed me out of over $1000 dollars I signed up for a year membership in March 2023 . In November 2024 I called and asked him to cancel my membership due to health issues. He said that he couldn't help me and kept charging me every month until it's expiration in March 2024. Sadly, he gave me no choice but to ride out the term of the membership even though I was unable to attend the gym! In March 2024 conner told me the membership would expire on its own. I trusted him! Connor did not cancel my membership as he said he would! Instead, the membership went up $50, without my permission or my knowledge! Six months went by when I discovered that he had been charging me without my permission. Even after I told him that I was diagnosed with cancer, he did not care and refused to reimburse any of the money taken out of my account since March 2024!! After being diagnosed with cancer, Connor Waggoner kept charging me. I went to the gym, pleading with him in person. He told me that he would NOT refund any money or even partially reimburse me. He admitted that he remembers the conversation we had last November and remembers me wanting to cancel. Do not join Luma Fitness and beware of the owner Connor Waggoner ! This man is dishonest, greedy and has no problem taking money from a single mom with cancer ! read more

Luma Fitness cost us $232 per class. Here's why. My wife and I signed up for a year at Luma fitness at the beginning of last year. We set up direct bill payment to automated the payments of $179 per month. Luma Fitness limits the number of students per class. You have to sign up. If the class is full, you can't take that class. And the classes are usually full. You can see this for yourself. For example, when I wrote this review on Saturday morning, you can see from my screenshot that every Sunday class that takes place at the gym is already full. (The only available classes are a trail running class -- we already trail run every day and don't need to pay a gym for that -- and a second class that's way above our fitness level.) We work during the day, and want to work out after work. Those classes are the most unavailable, especially the ones at our fitness level. We're very busy, and often had a hard time making time for the gym. But when we did find the time, we found that Luma Fitness classes were already full. Because of that, we were able to attend only 10 classes for the year. We paid them $2,148 and used their gym 10 times. The nightmare continued. Our membership ended at the end of January. You have to give 30 days notice in writing to terminate the membership, which we did on January 6. Yet they're charging us for the full month of February. We called and argued with them about it, but they were horrible and nasty and insisted that we pay the full month, rather than honor their own contract of 30 days notice. They KNOW we won't be using their gym for the month of February. They KNOW we paid them thousands of dollars without using their service much. But they are just taking our $179 for the month anyway. I guess the $2,148 we paid for 10 classes wasn't enough, so they're reaching into our bank account and taking more. So now our grand total is $2,327 for 10 classes. Instead of going to Luma Fitness, just flush $20 bills down the toilet twice a week. You'll save money -- and you'll get more exercise. read more

As cheesy as it sounds Luma changed my life. I am naturally athletic but NOT motivated on my own. I tried going to so many different gyms and none gave me the consistency of Luma. They've created a family like environment where all the members are like family! You never feel like you're being watched like you do at the traditional gyms. But you do know that there is a coach there ready to correct your form and help motivate you to get the most out of your work outs. The gym is insanely clean for how much use it gets. My son who is now a college athlete first introduced me to SPD/LUMA. He always said to me that if I wanted to get in shape; this was the place to go. At that time there were a few parents that worked out at SPD/LUMA, but they were a hardy bunch. About 9 months ago I noticed that workouts were being created for the general population. SPD/LUMA broke it into 3 groups for those that needed to get into shape, those that were fit, and those that wanted extraordinary conditioning. I started at the first level and now I am at the second level. My weight has dropped by 40 pounds and I am now enjoying athletic activities that had become beyond my physical ability. In fact, I feel comfortable working out with others that are less than 1/2 my age. I have been member of several gyms in Petaluma and the experience was pretty dull. Initially I came here for the team workouts, but now I have joined a community of exercise people that care about their bodies and friendships have evolved. In January '12 I joined Luma (SPD Factory) for one of their 3 week weight-loss challenges. I thought it was a good way to check out how the gym worked without making a long-term commitment. To make a long story short I LOVE the way the gym works, and have (of course with the addition of changing my diet) lost 70lbs in 8 months. Every class has a coach/trainer who encourages you to do your best and push yourself a little harder. When I first started I could barely get through the warm-up of their Jump-start beginner class (I thought I was going to have a heart-attack I was breathing so hard) but 9 months later I am in the best shape of my life and am shocked at how strong and flexible I've become. As an added bonus I have not had any of the lower back problems recently that have plagued me for life. I really feel that this has come from strengthening my core and back muscles. For me this gym works because you have to sign up for the group work-out times and I need that commitment. I sign up 2 weeks in advance (when I'm feeling energized) and then because there is a penalty (reduced to drop-in instead of being able to pre-schedule) if you cancel twice less than 1 hour prior to your class there is no last minute "I just don't feel like it" dropping out. I schedule. I go. Every time I read a fitness article of how to "lose that belly fast", or "improve your glutes" or "increase your speed" they always mention exercises that we are already doing at the gym. The classes are constantly different to ensure we are not only targeting different muscle groups but also targeting different kinds of exercise, like agility, flexibility, cardio, speed and muscle development. In the 8 months I've been going I have never done the same class twice so am I never bored. After going on vacation in the summer for a month and working out at different gyms on my travels, I realized what the best part about Luma is, and it's the people. You go in and not only are the trainers friendly (and Kelly who remembers everyone's name), but the people you meet in class are friendly too. The other people working out say hi to you, encourage each other and do outside events together. The atmosphere encourages you to do your best and keep improving. I've made many friends here and am truly grateful I've found Luma. If you are thinking of giving it a try they have a great low (no) pressure 2 week free trial. Do it. You will love it. I did. PS. Quite a few kids work out here too but because the classes are structured they don't fool around or take-over they just join one of the existing classes. One star is too much for Luma Fitness because of their restrictive and oppressive scheduling model that led me and my husband to not workout most of 2014. Instead, we had to opt for trail running on our own most of the time because we couldn't get into their sold-out classes. When we signed up one year ago, we had no idea that classes would fill up most of the time and that we would end up paying Luma Fitness $2148 for one year for just the few classes we managed to take thanks to their restrictive schedule. Worse, is the fact that I gave them the required 30-days notice on January 6th, which means our membership should terminate February 4th. But Kelly, the desk assistant told me that we will have to pay for the whole month of February, which means they're blatantly and illegally overcharging us and deliberately breaching the contract. They have an online scheduling system, which means you have to sign up for each class you attend, and the classes my husband and I can attend (evening classes) are almost never available. Check out the pictures of the schedule I posted or better yet, check out their schedule online before you make any commitment with Luma Fitness paying them a lot of money (like we did) for their prohibitive scheduling system. If you play your cards right, you can monopolize and sign up for the same classes on permanent basis on the calendar and just cancel one hour before the class takes place if you change you mind. But you have to remember to cancel and also have the time to do it. But for me and my husband, as very busy people, we usually don't know if we'll be able to attend a class until the same day or just hours before, which means we don't stand a chance getting into a class the same day. Frankly, it's outrageous to have to spend any of my time scheduling every single class or canceling it, for that matter,for a service I pay and should be able to get any time I want it. To add insult to injury, if you can get your name added to the waiting list but miss the notification that you got into the class and forget to cancel the class you get scolded with a threatening nastygram that you'll lose your privilege of signing up for classes online in the future. It's a terrible system that doesn't work. I should be able to just drop in for a class spontaneously if my time permits me to do so. They should always be open and welcoming, that's I what pay for, to workout when I have the time to do it without any authoritarian rules to keep me from it. read more

I signed up for the free two week trial. The front office gal was very warm and friendly. I attended one class and felt a bit "meh" about it. The class was just ok, the instructor was ok, and not one regular said hello or showed much community warmth I guess you could call it. Maybe it was just an off day. I'm sure there's lots of great folks there, but I didn't walk out with a stoked feeling. I think the reason I never went back was because of two things: 1- This appears to be a more intimate, local business than a regular gym, perhaps. A suggestion to the owners might be to make a 2 minute phone call to welcome the new potential member and see how they are enjoying their trial and even see if they want to sign up (get business!). 2- I realize committing to and signing up for workouts in advance isn't the end of the world difficult, but I also realized I like to be able to keep the flexibility of a gym where I can do a last minute workout should my time free up to. *A side note that I know probably won't bother everyone, but...all the tv's that were on on the gym is just not my preference for during a workout. I just don't like that distraction and prefer to listen to music only to help motivate me. Overall, clean gym with nice equipment and setup, just wasn't a fit for me. read more

I really like several aspects of Luma. 1. You have to schedule your workouts in advance. For me, that means it is in my calendar and other parts of my life do not get to take that time. 2. The classes are small enough for the trainer to observe your work but large enough that you have some autonomy. 3. You take a class, and then get out of there. There are no gym "hanger ons" watching people workout. 4. My competitive streak comes out during class which keeps me from quitting when it is tough. :) 5. That being said, when the exercise is too strenuous for me, there is always a modification I can do. 6. I can do Pull Ups! read more

I've been going to this gym for a little over a month now and I really like it. Some might not like that you have to schedule online but I like that it holds me accountable. You can always change it up to an hr before class. A few things I don't like: When we don't start on time. I usually go to the 7 PM class and alot of times we won't start until 3 min. After so that feels like forever of just standing, thinking maybe I'll just start this class on my own. Please don't waste our time, start on time. When we finish early. We usually finish 10 min early. We could use that 10 min to get another workout in. Sometimes I think the instructors just want to get out of there. Starting late and finishing early makes the workout shorter. read more

This is the first gym I have joined where I only take classes. Every other gym I walk in and have to think about what I am going to do that day. Here at Luma I walk in and don't have to think about anything, there is a trainer there telling me what to do and motivating me to get through it. All of the trainers are great! Luma fitness is BY FAR the best gym in Petaluma. The trainers are helpful, knowledgable and super friendly. The workouts are always different and always kick your butt. And all the members are nice and encouraging to one another. It's like a big family! I have made some of the best friends and workout buddies at this gym. :) My favorite part is that you don't ever have to think about what you're going to do that day at the gym. You just show up, do the workout the trainer has planned out for you and when you're done you feel amazing (and almost always drenched in sweat)! Also, several members get together for trail runs on the weekends. We run places like Helen Putnum Park, Annadel State Park, Stinson, Marin Headlands, etc...It's SO fun and a great workout as well! I signed up for a two week free trial and never left! The workouts are never the same so your muscles are always being trained differently. It really is like having a personal trainer there the whole class. They motivate you to try harder and push yourself to that next level. Modifications are always welcomed so you never feel like you have to do what the next person is doing. What also is really important to me is the community that they have there. I started working out at Luma last July and have fallen in love. I have been a little promiscuous with my gyms in the past, but feel like I have finally found "THE ONE!" (My gym history: left 24 Hour due to it's lack of group classes, left another "small group HIIT Gym" due to the surge in enrollment every time they ran a Groupon when the class size skyrocketed to 60 people in "Small-group personal training sessions," left Active when I realized I was paying $99/month to use the sauna and sit by the pool twice a month and very little else - you get the picture, I've been around...) I found Luma and the community that this gym offers and truly feel at home. There are a variety of great trainers that each offer a little something different. The classes offered throughout the day and on weekends accommodate a variety of schedules.The gym hosts functions outside of working out, a trip to a giants game, teams for a variety of local races, "Thinner Winner" challenges, and the weekly "Pack Runs;" I have truly met some wonderful people here that have become good friends. Luma has connected my fitness goals to my everyday life by connecting me with a lot of people who have the same fun loving and health minded goals as I do. I particularly wanted to respond to a few posts below, from a couple frustrated by the scheduling policy. I understand that the policy wasn't convenient for them, but for many happy members it is not a problem. At the beginning of the month I sign up for next month's classes, If I want to add one and it's full I waitlist-I have always gotten into a waitlisted class. Additionally, the fact that they limit class size is what I LOVE about LUMA. I came from another small HIIT gym which sometimes had class sizes of up to 60 people. When classes get too large, the trainers cannot offer any kind of personal coaching. At Luma they keep the classes small enough that the trainers know your name, they correct your form, help prevent injuries and modify when needed. I think the fact that the owners prioritize the safety of their members over profit by limiting class size should be another reason to praise this gym rather than penalize it. The quality of instruction is fantastic. The class times are convenient. The online scheduling system is super easy. You can actually sign up for a class a month in advance or 5 min before it starts (provided there are openings). The members are friendly. I have been attending since July 2016 and I don't think I have hit the same workout routine in that time and I attend about 16 classes a month. It is really the best of both worlds. I've been working out at Luma Fitness for the past 3 yrs and would HIGHLY recommend this gym to anyone who is looking to sign up for a new membership. They offer a FREE 2 week trial for new members and I promise you after trying it out you will want to stick around long term! For me this gym is perfect because the classes are fun, every single one of the trainers are supportive and encouraging, other members are very nice and supportive as well. You definitely get your money's worth- each trainer and class is different every time and the trainers take the time to demonstrate and correct your form which is important in preventing injury. I have been in the best shape that I have ever been in my life, I've gotten stronger not only physically but mentally since going here and I feel challenged and accomplished every time I leave the door. You don't have to worry about being intimidated like at other gyms because every one at Luma Fitness is supportive. Of course people are entitled to their own opinion, however I HIGHLY DISAGREE for the reasoning behind their "1 star reviews". They claim to be BUSY and not being able to work out because of the classes being full. Yes sometimes the classes can be full especially after work, however there is a wait list for all classes and even if you are on the wait list 90% of the time you end up getting in the class anyways. I'm sorry but "being busy because of work and not being able to work out" is a BS excuse for ANY GYM. YOU MAKE TIME TO WORK OUT! I work and go to school full time and still work out at Luma Fitness 20+ classes a month and a majority of my work outs are after work (5pm) during the week. Also their "strict" policy is FAIR because it makes room for people who WANT TO and WILL be there. I recommend that you take the time to schedule your work outs months in advance, can't hurt to be more organized. I am 46 years old and it is because of Luma that I am in the best shape of my life and feel the strongest I have ever felt. I am an athlete and also a mother of two and this place is exactly the community I was wanting. Here is why: I have never done the same workout twice (and this is after being here for 3 years!) There are multiple events outside of the gym to participate in (sunday runs, tough mudder, 5K, 10K) I do not find the calendar and schedule to be tough at all. The gym asks for accountability and seeks to accommodate everyone who wishes to work out there. So if you sign up for a class, you go! And to sign up, you have to be on top of it and think ahead. It's been almost a year since I have joined luma fitness. Luma is the best facility I have ever worked out at! It's not just a ordinary gym. It's far more then that. The trainers are so knowledgeable & friendly. The workouts are always different, challenging and dynamic. They incorporate so many elements into each work out. You don't have to be in amazing shape to take the classes. Not only are the members friendly and encouraging, but they are all ages and fitness levels too. I haven't quite figured out how they are able to not only help you get in shape, but have a lot of fun while doing it! It's the magic of luma! One of my favorite thing is the free trail running group on sun. Two of the owners/ head trainer leads the pack. They don't charge or get paid to be there. I am towards the end of my 2-week trial and am loving Luma Fitness. I agree with Julie D., scheduling your classes ahead makes you take time for yourself and holds you accountable to the time you promise to put in work at the gym. I like the size of the classes, and in each class I feel comfortable because there are people that range from beginners to experienced. I've had 4 different trainers and all have been amazing at keeping the work outs challenging and fun. If I'm struggling or have questions, the trainers are knowledgeable in modifying but making sure I get the most out of my work out. I have not had the same work out twice! I've had memberships at Active, City Sports, and Anytime Fitness... at each gym I probably have gone 4 times in the years I was a member. Terrible, I know.
