Forcing me to relearn everything. At first, I had to string my Violin/Fiddle backwards and played it that way. The Orchestra teacher at Sprague high was so jealous that I had successfully done this he told me "You are not good enough for my Orchestra." So, I did not play in High school. However, I had a surgery usually only done on Parkensens Patients where, there is a lesion in my brain so, yep, now I can and do play the correct way again. Our son desperately wanted to learn piano but we were…read moreunable to attend based on their rigid and uncompromising decision to not allow a 4 year old to start (private) piano lessons ... within just weeks of turning five. In our initial conversations, they said they could meet with our 4 year old and see if he was ready but then they changed their mind and "decided to draw a firm line" at 5 years old. The problem with this is that our son is 4 and will be 5 years old just DAYS before he starts kindergarten. We wanted the opportunity to allow him a couple weeks of private lessons to understand if he liked it and if he felt ready to take on a full semester. The school denied us and said we were welcome to sign him for the 18 week fall semester. This is actually hurting his abilities since his fellow 5 year old classmates/cohort of which he is held to the same standard in every other way, would have the opportunity to be exposed to piano gradually during a calm summer, but our 4.9 year would get no such benefit. I must admit that I've heard good things about the Academy (indeed that is why we're so heartbroken to not be a part of it) though we have decided against participating with this school even when he is older. I understand the basis for a rule like this but abiding to the letter of the law in this circumstance seems cold. A staff that is unable to look at your child and the situation and make the best decision for everyone involved is not a place we feel we belong.

I was literally going to cancel this morning but she beat me to it because when I pointed out that she demands respect for her time but gives none for ours it becomes clear she's not the right person to be dealing with... as the adult paying the $300 a month for zoom lessons. zoom. not in person. zoom. For her to call me aggressive for asking to end a lesson 10 minutes early and her telling me to cancel and lose the $60 with almost zero communication as to why i responded by acknowledging that her demand for respect on scheduling only goes one way, hers, and that's not Ok with us, she then proceeded to call me 'aggressive' . Lol Not in the slightest. I've got text receipts. Anyhow, if you like people canceling last minute, not refunding you and only teaching on zoom for an outlandish fee then by all means. But it's a big no thank you from us.

But she easily showed me how adept she is at teaching online: hearing small subtle missteps in rhyme, pointing out correct shoulders & arms positions, & celebrating my accomplishments -- even though they went right by me! I knew I wanted to take lessons this time around, since I had attempted to 'self teach' the first time, and felt as if that had been the wrong approach. After a bit of looking around online, I decided to go with Cameron, and I can definitely say it was a very smart choice! Cameron is awesome, simply put. He knows his stuff, he's patient, super laid back and a really nice guy to be around, on top of being a fantastic teacher. I love that he customizes his teaching approach and lesson to you specifically. I've never once felt 'pressured' to do anything I don't want to, and I really appreciate him allowing me to take my time and go at my own (often very slow) pace with my learning, and my sometimes weird schedule. He picks up on your quirks and tastes very quickly. Before taking lessons from him I was honestly pretty freaked out about music theory, and he has made it so much more approachable than I could ever imagine. I've learned so many things that not only put music theory into a much more understandable (and thus less scary) perspective, but are just plain cool! If you want to learn just songs, or mix up songs with technique, or go full on music theory; Cameron can do all of that. He likes to keep things fresh, and interesting for you, which I think goes so far in getting over that frustrating initial hump of learning a new instrument. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend Cameron/New Verse to anybody, beginner or experienced. I think his prices are very fair, and he will drive to your home (within reason I'd imagine) for a bit of extra cost, which is great. I can only speak from a bass lesson point of view, but I have no doubt whatsoever that Cameron rocks the guitar lessons as well, and that he's going to bring in some great talent to round out New Verse's instrument lesson choices.
