Ethiopian breakfast was delicious. Since it was my first time, I got the combo breakfast so I could try a little of everything. It was great. My server was so nice and patient in describing the types of dishes for me. Of course I had to get coffee, it was excellent. Very modern interior and I got a nice spot at the window. I really enjoyed grabbing my bite while my car was being serviced nearby. Don't stay in the service lobby, wait here instead. Much better atmosphere here. read more

Visited Twist for an Eti breakfast. The restaurant is cozy with oversized windows that brighten it up. We ordered scrambled eggs with onions and peppers. Many places don't get this dish right but Twist's version was excellent! Eggs cooked just right with sautéed onions/peppers. We also ordered Ful. First time trying this dish & it was pretty good. We finished the meal with Macchiatos which were excellent. Bold/strong coffee. Our server was amazing! We were there early on a Friday right when they opened so it was quiet. We used to really enjoy their veggie platter, but today it was terrible. The veggies were scarce, not tasty and the injera was brittle and dry. And during the meal, not one, not two, but THREE cockroaches showed up on our table. We squished the first two with napkins and then beat a hasty retreat. As we were explaining the problem to the server, number three showed up. She charged us full price as well. We could have made a scene but didn't. Never again. Ugh!! read more

What I love about the DMV area are the international specialty eateries such as Twist. But at times the lack of best business practices negates the Anthony Bordain rush. I'm giving them a low rating because they couldn't offer their signature drink "Espris" during our visit. My group of diaspora Ethiopians came specifically for their reputed "Espris", a delightful melody of fruit presented in clear glass, iconic to Addis Abeba (Capital of Ethiopia). We arrived on a Sunday at about 5pm and were told that due to demand they could only make the mix smoothie and not the "Espris". I was bewildered since there were empty tables around us. This unassuming little Ethiopian Cafe is located on seminary road in falls church. We pulled into the private parking lot and entered to the mutes sounds of Ethiopian music. The fact that the place had a large Ethiopian clientele was a great sign - it meant the place was authentic and had good food. The fridge gleamed of bottles of soda - a welcome sight to see original sugar sodas and not the aspartame canned stuff. Ethiopians are known for many great things including a rich culture of coffee - and this place lived up to that wonderful impression. Both the cappuccino and the macchiato were top notch! Very Delicious combination plate with a jerky style meat and a tuna meal and cous cous with perfect flavors and consistency. This meal included a nice portion of moist injera bread for dipping and wrapping. The meal was spicy and flavorful and needed no extra hot sauce as it was both filling and satisfying. Hanna was our server and is a warm person that immediately makes you comfortable in the restaurant. Great service and nice smiles. On top of the meal was a blended drink that was delicious. Topped with a strawberry purée, layered down to the mango purée and finally layered to the blended avocado purée which was a nice surprise. Twist Cafe & Deli is located off of Seminary, offering breakfast, brunch, and Ethiopian dishes and plates. I was pretty excited in checking this place out, as it seemed like a little gem located in the Baileys Crossroads area! The hubs and I came here for a weekend brunch, and we ordered: the Twist Breakfast Combo (this came with scrambled eggs that had some diced tomatoes and bell peppers (fluffy, seasoned well, and pretty tasty), some spiced-up/seasoned injera bread chunks (this was just okay), and some plain couscous (could have had some more butter in, but it was simple), with a side of sliced loaf of bread (fluffy and not toasted, there was also no butter offered with it); you can also upgrade your injera mixture by adding meat to it, so I requested the dry beef tibs - I do like my meat extra well-done, but these beef chunks had an off game-y taste to them, was way too super jerky-like, and even way more difficult to chew), and the hubs ordered an omelette (with spinach, cheese, and chicken, which came with a sliced loaf of bread with 2 packets of butter; the omelette itself was okay - there wasn't enough cheese, and the diced chicken was a bit too dried out). The issue we had was that both of our orders were inaccurate when they were first brought out - my dish had the meat missing, and when they brought my unfinished dish back to fix, the jerky was just mixed within the injera and sent back out - the other parts of the dishes were not replaced, so the couscous and the scrambled eggs were super cold T____T My hubs' omelette was supposed to have chicken, but instead, there was gyro meat; again, when this dish was taken back to fix, the filling was just scooped out of the egg and then refilled with the chicken mixture; the egg itself was cold compared to the warm filling, and the sliced bread that was slightly toasted, also became cold. We each waited an additional 30+ minutes for our dishes to be corrected, so we were both not too happy. In the meantime, I did try a sambusa - it was filled with spicy lentil and it was actually pretty tasty; however, it was in a plastic bin by the cashier, pre-fried, so it was not warm and the exterior shell was little chewier. It would have been great if these were fried-to-order and came out fresh! Service was friendly, but inefficient - with the lack of attention to details and the lack of quality control of the meals, it really makes me rethink of giving them another try to go through all that hassle! I was on my way to Alexandria when I spotted this place. Had never heard of it but because I was hungry and wanted something real quick, I pulled in and went inside anyway. I was in a hurry so I was looking for a sandwich even though the place looked like they serve Ethiopian food as well. I ordered the steak and cheese, again, I wanted something quick. And after about 7 minutes I got a very nice, fresh steak and cheese sub. Very clean looking place, and the sub was really good. This place is nice, clean and spacious. If my memory serves me right, they offer breakfast, sandwiches/salads. They have some cakes/pastries but couldn't remember what kind, but regardless am pretty sure they are all good. We had the cafe latte and we liked it very much, probably one of the best we had and I am not much of a coffee drinker. We also had the biscotti and a slice of tiramisu cake. Biscotti was just plain, nothing special. The tiramisu was good, (didn't have that much coffee flavour, this could be good/bad depending on individual preferences, in my case its good)kind of light, not too sweet and not heavy compared to other tiramisu's I've had(from skyline/dama etc). The service was good and overall happy with this place. Will come back for sure to try the other stuff. If you're in the area and love coffee, do give this place a try. read more

Had their beef tip and scrambled egg platters. They are both under breakfast catagory, but i think they serve more like brunch items. The beef tips dish is bit dry, but the flavor is excellent. Serving size is generous. My food did take about 10 minutes to come so for some one whos in a hurry, it may be better to order something else. read more

I hand an awkward experience with this restaurant. When we walked in, there was no greeting. The owner stares at us and didn't say a word. We figured "maybe we should take a menu and sit down?" Five minutes later, we are about to leave (I wish we did), the owner came and smiling. We ordered the food. I noticed the owner didn't write anything down. One of my kids ordered omelette without jalapeños, another kid specifically tell them "don't put anything spicy." Of course, both omelettes had Jalapeño. Maybe the memory is not as good as pencils? The wait for the food was very long and I had to order some cakes just to survive. And there were only 2 others tables! In the middle of forever waiting, they came and told one of our dish is sold out. That's when my kid switched to "non spicy omelette " Later, they re-made an omelette without jalapeño... I was just sitting there and praying the whole thing to be over. read more

I have been to Twist café many times The food was amazing! I had a breakfast combo(Ethiopian dish ), vegetarian dish and a yummy dessert and all incredibly delicious! Cannot wait to go back again! Since I moved to the Virginia area, I tried many local Ethiopian restaurants/Café, but Twist café is Hands down my favorite Ethiopian restaurant. Very good hospitality, great atmosphere, good food, and very convenient location. The price is very reasonable and lots of choices. I rarely give 5 stars to many restaurants. The owner and people who work here are very nice and provide excellent service. I can vouch for a glass of wine and Twist beef Tibs( meat dish). I also recommend the delicious true Ethiopian coffee. We had their grilled chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, and pasta dishes for lunch; no one was in the mood for Ethiopian food that day. They surprised me with the quality of service and food. Ordered delivery off of grub hub. It was delicious -- I got the pastrami sandwich. I also ordered the Turkey and Chicken salad sandwich for later this week because the minimum delivery was $20. If I could give this place a zero star, I would because I was so disappointed in the service and treatment I received at this place. I have been here a few times before and although I've never had as big of an issue as the one I'm about to explain, I never felt comfortable going there in general because some of the employees have a tendency of staring at you and making you feel like an outsider. Anyway, I ordered the same sandwich I always do. After my order was taken, I sat down nearby and waited. I know they usually take around 10 - 15 minutes which is already kind of long for a deli but I knew to expect that at this point. What I didn't expect was waiting for almost 30 minutes to get my meal that was already a to-go order. I went up to the employee behind the counter and asked her if my order was ready because I had been waiting for a while. She went to the back and grabbed one of the order tickets on the wall and gave it to the older lady making the food. She did not return to me to give me an update, she just walked back to make some coffee. I didn't get a "sorry it took so long, you'll get your order soon", nope, she just ignored me. After about another 5-6 min, I noticed that the lady making the food was cutting up tomatoes for what looked to be a salad. There was no sandwich in sight. At this point, I went back to the girl and asked her if she could just give me my money back because I had somewhere to go. She looked at me and said "uhh..." and murmured something and left to grab a menu to give to a seated customer. I couldn't believe it. She came back and I asked her again to please give me a refund because I want to leave. She sighed and walked over to the back room. I thought at this point that she was going over to grab the manager or something. While I was waiting, there was another employee behind the counter and I said to him, "Hi, I don't think she understood me, can I just get a refund because this is taking too long and I have to go", he said "It'll be another 3 minutes". I explained to him that I just would like my money back and he gives me the same weird look the other employee gave me. Then the girl comes back alone and she just stood behind the register as if nothing happened. I said "hi, I don't think you understood what I was asking, do you get what I'm saying?" She says no so I show her the menu of what I paid for and I explain that I just want my money back so I can go. She says "you want it to-go?" Really? I tell her, no but I would like to get my money back so I could go. She rolls her eyes and looks behind her as if to see if the food is ready. Another customer comes behind me, he's Ethiopian and he hands her $20 and orders while speaking their language. She opens the register and I point to it and say, "that, I would like my money back, can you just give me a refund?" She has the nerve to roll her eyes again. She apparently doesn't understand me but that hasn't stop her from continuously being rude and ignoring me in response to my question. At this point I was there for almost an hour. The older lady finally comes over to give me the sandwich (that wasn't even cut in half btw) and I'm just baffled how aloof they all were. Nobody in there had an ounce of self-awareness about how they were behaving. This isn't just a matter of a language barrier, it was pure disrespect. She understood me when I asked about the order, but was suddenly at a loss for words when I wanted a refund. Needless to say, I will never come back to this place again. read more

Got the beef jerk with injera dish and they charged me for an extra side of injera even though I didn't ask for it.
