I can fully recommend City Diner for breakfast and brunch. Of interest to me is their website. The menu page is a picture of a new-looking diner with a 50s style. This is not City Diner. City Diner is well-worn with a lot of personal touches but still clean and comfortable. Arriving shortly after noon, the restaurant was filled with customers, but we only had a brief wait before we were seated in a booth. There is off-street parking. Though parking slots are ample, at peak times you might have to wait or moment or two for a spot to open up. All aspects of service, from seating to ordering to paying were attentive and responsive. City Diner has an all-day menu for breakfast, lunch and diner.' I ordered the Club Sandwich with turkey and bacon. Made with tomato, lettuce, turkey and bacon, the portion size was very generous. However, I'm pretty certain that they were missing a slice of bread on one half of the sandwich, making that half very awkward to eat. I swapped out the fries for onion rings, which were fine. And, they were not beer-battered. Yay! I ordered grits as my side and was very pleased when they gave me a whole bunch of cream packets to go on my grits. JP ordered the Baconador omelet off the specials board. It was very good, living up to its name with plenty of bacon. It also came with avocado and tomato. I hadn't been here in a while and this place is as good as ever. This place has the look and feel you want in an old school diner that feels in a good way like it's been there forever. My blueberry pancakes were as fresh, tasty and huge as ever. The bacon was hot and crisp as usual and they kept refilling my cup of fresh hot coffee. Service was awesome today and our food came very quickly. Prices are reasonable given that everything seems to be getting pricier by the day. Note, they don't open until 8am so this might not be the best spot for a super early breakfast. I've been here many times, mostly for breakfast, and I'll keep coming back. read more

Perfect New Jersey / New York diner hiding in Virginia. All the fare you'd expect on the menu that you'd find on a menu in Jersey. Their Chicken Salad Club is delicious with crunchy fries stacked on top. Their breakfasts are heaping with meat eggs pancakes and home fries. Every time I get a hankering for Jersey diner food, I find my way here. read more

I've only ever had their breakfast but I can say it is very good. Extremely good food and portions for the price. The only downside is their hours are slim. They open at 8AM and close at 4PM on most days. We tried to go last night (Tuesday) at 6pm and they were closed. We would love to enjoy for dinner on certain days. Was getting a tire replaced nearby so I walked over to try this cage for breakfast. They have a huge menu selection, but I went with the french toast and a side of corned beef hash which both were very good. The dine in atmosphere is very nice and staff extremely friendly. We visited on a Sunday morning. It seemed disorganized and messy inside. Maybe we just missed the rush. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated. Menu is pretty standard for a large diner. All food we ordered was OK. Not bad but not amazing either. I thought the French toast was a little overcooked but not terrible. Bagel was very basic...more like bagel shaped bread (definitely not a NY style bagel). WHAT I ATE - VIRGINIA @ City Diner Falls Church, VA One of the few places in the area where we can get Fried Catfish for breakfast is at the City Diner in Falls Church, VA. Their extensive menu has pages of diner staples, but today, both my wife and I were craving the catfish and eggs platter which also came with grits (or home fries). We always look in their cake display to see if they have galaktoboureko that day. They don't always make it, but when they do.....we are on it! A good cup of coffee started the meal right! My wife liked the strong brew. I just sank into the perfectly warm cup. I was looking for something different so I also ordered some Strawberry Blintzes to go with my Catfish breakfast. The waitstaff were quick with the coffee refils and the the food also came out in short order. The catfish fillets were nicely breaded and fried crisp. Grits were cooked well to a creamy texture. Eggs were made perfectly to order as well, with a rich oozy yolk for dipping the corners of my toast.. The blintzes were good, and served with sour cream, fresh strawberries and a strawberry compote. I mistook the sour cream for whipped cream and it took a few tastes before I realized it was sour cream. This was a good meal for doing some heavy weekend work. We love the City Diner, but wish it went back to the pre-covid hours where we could come for a late night meal. Now, you have to get there before 7PM on most days. The staff - AMAZING ! So kind, welcoming, funny even. Our waiter took our order for 4 adults w no paper or pen. Truth, we were taken aback expecting a problem. Did we have any? NOT ONE. Everything we ordered PERFECTLY. The food....well I had catfish and I think they caught out back in their hidden lake because it was so fresh and cooked to perfection. I haven't been here for a long time, maybe pre-covid. But I used to visit semi-regularly before I retired. Used to take my mom here. I usually opted for breakfast so can't speak to the expansive menu. There were always plenty of families/kids/couples but I did get the sense that there were a lot of older regulars who were maybe there for their one big meal for the day. It's a small family biz very attentive to customer service and comfort. Also, FWIW, I don't pay much attention to what's on TV in public settings - often ESPN, Discovery, HGTV, or similar 'vanilla' shows. City Diner seems to favor 'far right' news programming (or at least did in the past) which might or might not (probably should not) matter to anyone but just putting it out there. So go explore the menu, enjoy the comfort, and support a small local biz. read more

My wife and I came here for late brunch on a Saturday. This is a really cool, old-timey family run institution. The hobo banquet was awesome and we ordered two! Service was great overall. I asked about the bloody mary and they comped me a sample of the mix (it was tasty). The onion rings were also amazing: perfectly cook and good consistency in the batter. Prices were great and portions were big. We had two boxes to take home. I was curious about the NYC decor so I spoke with the guy running the register (the owner?) for a bit as well. Great, kind gentleman and a former NYer (like me). He is VERY knowledgeable about the diner business and knows his trade. He also mentioned some wisdom to me that will stick with me for a while. Phenomenal service goes a long way and this local diamond in the rough has it in spades! The locals seem to know each other and there's a kind, familiar vibe here. I had high hopes for this place, as I love a local greasy spoon diner feel. The staff are extremely kind and friendly and the atmosphere def feels like a chill diner. It feels like a place you can drop by for a casual feel with an expansive menu. I bet it's easy for folks to find something they want to eat here (barring specific allergies or restrictions like gluten free or vegan). I ordered a garden omelette with a single pancake. The garden omelette was super watery eggs -- I think it sort of felt like the broccoli was frozen and then thawed out when cooked. Same thing with the tomatoes! Maybe it's just the nature of ordering omelette with watery vegs, but I didn't find a lot of satisfaction from it. The home fries were classic. The pancake was also fluffy and good! My husband ordered the farmers omelette with a side of grits. The grits were extremely watery and looked more liquid than a solid mix. We know we aren't in the south so we aren't expecting super high quality grits, but these definitely were not it. I don't think we'll be back, mostly because there's other diners nearby with competitive prices. Maybe someday we'll give this another try. read more

However, the staff is so friendly, and it kinda makes up for the VERY mediocre food. For example, my omelet was flat and dry. The spinach looked like an herb...it was so flat! The omelet must have cooked in a brick oven because it could've been mistaken for a pizza!!! The home fries were potatoes with added green peppers as an afterthought, like oops! The diner was busy but the hosts/greeters were attentive, welcoming and kept things moving. We were seated within minutes of arriving. Out waiter came over and noticed my 2 year old niece. Asked what she wanted to eat and drink and got her food out right away. We appreciated that and she enjoyed her meal. Once my parents and I ordered our food, there wasn't a long wait time and they refilled our water without asking. With such a busy crowd we appreciated the attentiveness of the staff. We're no strangers to this place we'll certainly be back. Overall our meals were good, the salmon wasn't my favorite but I'm glad I tried it, portions were large enough for left overs and everything was hot. My husband and I came to City Diner for dinner on Saturday evening. We arrived around 6pm and there were only two other tables. When we left there were a few additional, but I'm betting that breakfast is truly their busy time. With that in mind, however, do not sleep on dinner here! The menu is diner-breakfast all day-but leans towards Greek and Italian. Interestingly, they also have matzo ball soup. Prices are super reasonable (much like a diner) with our meal costing around $25. Service was attentive and friendly. Waters were refilled regularly. The atmosphere is very dated, but is as a diner should be. I ordered the gyro platter which came with French fries and a Greek salad. The tzatziki sauce was delicious, the gyro meat tender and well-flavored, and the pita bread soft and fluffy. The fries were crisp and hot, although I suspect they were of the frozen variety. I loved that the salad was substantial including lots of feta and kalamata olives. My husband ordered the homemade lasagna. It came with vegetables (peas, carrots, etc-definitely frozen) and a soup or salad. He chose the matzo ball soup and it was well-flavored and the matzo ball was legit. Rolls were nothing special but were served prior to dinner. The desserts looked delicious-maybe next time we will save room! You won't get amazing food here but you will get a hearty, decent meal at a reasonable price. Don't forget the key lime pie mints on the way out! read more
