The food we got here was great! We ordered the veggies with fish combo and gored gored (cubed marinated raw meat), which were both fantastic. There was ample food for the 3 of us and the perfect amount of injera provided. Like many of the other reviewers noted, it can get pretty busy (nearly all tables were full at 7:30 pm on a Saturday night) and so service was quite slow. We also didn't get our food for an hour or so. Something to note as well: they have a hookah lounge directly next door, and the restaurant is not sound proof. Everything was just average for me. Two of the sides in my combo were raw cabbage and something that was very similar to just boiled potatoes with very little seasonings. I was hoping for more exciting lentils or collard greens. The yabug awaze had great flavors but it was a bit dry. Really enjoyed the set up at this place with the portraits on the walls and the hall/banquet style feel to the place. Our server was very informative and gave us suggestions on what to order to have the full Ethiopan experience. I enjoyed all the textures, colors, presentations and flavors of our storted cooked veggies and meat tray. It was a lot for 4 people but we were all satisfied with the seasons and tenderness of the meats. I will say, service is a bit slow so we enjoyed some traditional beers while waiting for our food. The restaurant space is shared and situated in the middle between a market and a hookah bar. It is pretty dark inside but they have a fresh flower on every table which brightened up the atmosphere a bit. We ordered the regular vegetarian combo which came with spicy lentils, yellow chickpeas, collard greens, cabbage, and salad. It also came with a red pepper/spice that I haven't had at other Ethiopian restaurants and I was pleasantly surprised with the heat it packed. For the meats, we decided on the Meaza tibs (their beef house special) and yabug awaze tibs (spicy lamb tibs). The meat was tender and full of flavor. The veggies maybe not so much - yellow chickpeas were a little bland - but still pretty good. We had one giant injera bread each - it was good but not as "sour" as others that I've had and it was pretty thick. Our server was very sweet and super attentive! I cannot say enough good things about Meaza. My now husband took me there for my birthday many years ago and I fell in love with the food. Everything on the menu is amazing but my personal favorites are the key misir wot, tikil gomen, and Meaza Tibs. Meaza catered our wedding of around 200 people a couple of weeks ago and was amazing! Everyone loved the food she catered. One of my all-time favorite things about D.C. is the incredible selection of Ethiopian food and shops the city has to offer. I left the city for a year and a half because of COVID, and the second I came back, I was hankering for a taste of injera and the whole swath of Ethiopian vegetarian favorites; Meaza absolutely met that craving. I ordered Meaza from UberEats, and the food was delivered relatively quickly (after about an hour), and it was all still warm when it arrived at my doorstep. I selected a sambussa and the special vegetarian combo, which came with spicy lentils, mashed yellow chickpeas, collard greens, cabbage cooked with carrots and potatoes, potatoes, shiro, and a simple salad. The sambussa was delightful. Even after sitting in its packaging for nearly 30 minutes as it was transported across Arlington, it was still crispy, and the inner filling was incredibly flavorful. The vegetarian combo was generally pretty solid; I thought that the lentils, chickpeas, shiro, and collard greens were all solid and had the perfect level of spice. The other vegetables were still good, but slightly disappointing. The potatoes were essentially just plain, boiled potatoes with no seasoning on them whatsoever, except potentially a tiny pinch of salt. They were just little white wedges, and I almost didn't realize what they were at first. The salad was effectively just shredded green cabbage with a few slices of jalapeno and a drizzle of white vinegar. It wasn't a standout in the dish, but it was a nice balance against the incredibly rich flavor that the other dishes had. read more

Ehh, as my favorite chu would say: womps. Not sure this was the best place to pop my Ethiopian cherry. I feel like Yelp let me down a little on this one. Store attached to it was pretty generic to theme, only things of note were some less-than-enticing baklava and ground spices. Plenty of parking on a less than busy evening. Service could have been better, they were surprisingly inattentive given there were two servers and three tables seated, including ours. Decor leans upscale, and the few folks who made it out on the dreary night gravitated towards the tables rather than the bar graced with a telly in the back. I'm a little annoyed by the waitress's description of the sambusa. Even though I told her I only wanted a bite, she said it wasn't big enough to split. I guess she thought we would eat like obese Americans, because I totally would've been happy cutting one in half once I saw them. Filling was on the chillier side of lukewarm, which is pretty unappetizing... no pun intended. Plethora of food. Injera was like a thin, spongy pancake; an interesting balance for some of the spicier selections, and the additional individual injera was more than enough to whet my appetite. Carnivore that I am, I enjoyed the ye beg tibs far more than the liyu ye tsom wot. The lamb cubes had a nice bit of gristle on still, and there was some decent flavor hidden behind the heat of the chopped jalapenos. Reviewing the menu, I again question our server's decision to recommend the special veggie combo over the regular lineup. Timatim fitfit was mushy and unexciting. Lentils were okay, and the potato salad was good. The remainder of the vegetarian dollops didn't really impress. I'd be open to trying veggie orders again elsewhere, but if I ended up back here I'd stick with the meat. Meaza was a disappointment and a contrast to the image that I had in mind based on a friend's reports. I felt the atmosphere was lackluster. The server didn't understand our questions and was recalcitrant in answering our queries about the food. The space felt cavernous and vacuous, and it had no redeeming lighting effects/music background to make it feel festive and hospitable. The food was alright. The lamb tasted somewhat musky, but in a robust sauce and was not tough. The red lentils were very good, and their cabbage salad tossed in a sour vinegar dressing was terrific and fresh in the mouth. If going a second time, I would order a couple of focused choices such as the red lentils and a meat dish, because the vegetarian platter didn't offer sufficient quantity of the choice items for two people (there is certainly plenty of food, just not enough of the delicious items!). read more

The food was fine although I am not sure we picked well despite asking the waitress for assistance and sharing our preferences. You are suppose to seat yourself. When we arrived there were just a couple of people inside. Once we saw a waitress I was certain to disclosure our inexperience with this particular cuisine. To me this was a chance for them to introduce us to something amazing. Instead they successfully made me uncomfortable. Hubby went with one of the favorites partly because we expected it to be mild, it also came out with a fork, an added bonus. My dish was spicy lamb and came out traditional. I had already disclosed my naivety but no guidance was provided. Hubby looked at me and suggested perhaps I should roll it like a burrito. I knew that wasn't it but was still uncertain and would have really liked either utensils or instruction or maybe even both. Luckily a family that had entered after us already had their food and dad was giving some instructions to his sons so I was getting some ideas. Eventually I got a fork and after that a lesson first from the waitress and then from the manager/owner. This could have been a great experience but it wasn't. We were looking for ways to get out. We were not sure what we had to do to get the bill. Hubby was annoyed by the slowness of everything. The food seemed fine but I doubt we will go back. **Another more general note -- when I place the orders it is not because my hubby is not manly it is because he had trouble hearing particularly in places with background noise. He has trouble hearing because during his service in Afghanistan there were a lot of explosions near his ears. He does not need a waitress to ignore me and talk softly at him to restore his manliness he has his manliness all on his own. This place has really great Ethiopian Food. I used a groupon and wanted to try it out because it had pretty good reviews on Yelp. We told the waitress we wanted to try something really good. She suggested the Awaze Tibs and I think it was the "Ye Tsom Wot". They put everytihng on the same platter for you to share -- delicious! See my picture! Awaze Tibs - very good meat. it was very well seasoned and cooked. we got it cooked fully through. i really recommend this. Ye Tsom Wot - this is an huge assortment or vegetables and beans on the injira bread. it was more than enough food to share and complimented the meat selection. We would definitely come back. The menu is varied, offering the classic communal Ethiopian tray with combinations of your choice - veggies, seafood of meat. I highly recommend the veggie combo with doro wat (chicken) and cubs (yes laugh - you read that right) of red snapper. The entrees are served on a gigantic platter with the bottom layer being the injera bread and with the selections you make, being heaped on top. Be prepared up eat with your hands - that is the truest way to enjoy the flavors - and believe me, it is finger licking good! I spoke to the owner when I picked up a to go order and had a sweet chat with her about communication through texting vs calling. She's quite personable! Ok, let's get to the FOOD. Portions are big! I usually order the vegetarian platter and kitfo (raw). The lentils are great, particularly the red one. The cabbage slaw with the injera bread is yummy . Kitfo comes with cheese soooooo delicious. I normally dine in but I ordered out one night. The portion again, HUGE! With an extra injera. I dug in before I snap a picture for this review, sorry guys. Came here with a friend for dinner after work for my first Ethiopian food experience. I love eating, and therefore love food. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with this place. Friend and I got the same appetizer (very similar to a samosa) It was pretty good. It was well seasoned and the flavor was good. Next were the entrees. While my friend got the spicy beef tibs, I went ahead and ordered the spicy lamb tibs. Our entrees came out smothered in a saucy stew like base that was placed atop a plate with injera on it. The spongy texture of the bread wasn't bad. What bothered me was how sour it tasted and how quickly soggy it got from sitting underneath the meat, rendering it to mush almost. The meat wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. It mainly tasted like a very heavily spiced dish with a lot of salt in it. Worse part was that it wasn't even really spicy! On the side, they gave us some pickled cabbage and what tasted like cooked chunks of potatoes that were sitting in vinegar. Needless to say, I was not a fan of either. I was actually very exited to try this place out, but I may have let my expectations get the best of me given all the positive things I've heard about Ethiopian food. Out of dozens of Ethiopian places in DC area, this is ours; we've never found its match. Pleasant service and (especially for takeout) abundant portions nicely packaged. Special vegetarian combo, my wife's favorite, gives very diverse assortment. Her other favorite is lamb dishes (spicy or not) and I like chopped fish (spicy, or not to share with wife). Visited on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The restaurant is very spacious. Looks like they turn it into a banquet hall when necessary. There was no host at the entrance and we were asked to take a table ourselves after we were lost not knowing where to look for someone. They forgot to hand us a menu and someone did after almost 10 minutes. We decided to get the veggie combo with fish. The menu had one veggie combo with no fish (served 6 dishes). The other veggie combo with fish (served 5 dishes + fish). When I asked the waitress if she could add the extra dish to our platter, she readily agreed to do it. With no extra cost! It took almost forever to get our platter, but the food was delicious. I must say most of the dishes served on the platter was hot, unlike the other places where they serve everything immediately, but cold. I personally liked it hot. Fish tasted good, nothing great about it. The bar is far away from the seating area and the waitresses are mostly around the bar area and don't attend to the guests as often as they should. Hence, service is very slow and we literally had to walk to the bar to ask a waitress to get us extra injera or water! Good food for $20, but they should definitely improve their service if they want to see more customers. read more
