I was there on 3/9 for the Batman show at 5:20 and there was about 20 teenagers in the room who talked and screamed the ENTIRE movie. This place is terrible. Went to watch a show and the sound quality was horrible. I had a better experience with my home theater. 15 minutes into the movie I finally had enough and went to the manager with my issue. He told me that sound was fine without checking. He stated the speakers were new. I kind ask for my money back and was told that issue doesn't warrant a refund. I said once again I was only at the film for 15 minutes. Went to see Downton Abbey with Joker playing next door. The noise from next door is very annoying and so is the heating/cooling system that came on and off throughout the movie. Very loud and distracting. Seats are uncomfortable with horrible arm rests. Finally the picture quality: much fuzzier than at home and black is actually gray. Overall a very disappointing experience. I went to these theatres at a time when there were boxes and boxes of new chairs sitting in the foyer. As such, I went in knowing that the seats I would be on would probably not be the best... And, they weren't. They were extremely spacious (as in between rows, so those of you who are sick of kicking the seat in front of you every time you cross your legs, don't worry), but also extremely old. But now they shouldn't be. Maybe I shouldn't be writing this review at all given it's of the past theatre. Okay, I'll just add a star assuming they've gotten better. Service is good, theatre is fine--probably pretty comfy now with the new seats, and popcorn is alright. Street parking is pretty darn easy, especially if you go at night. Pricing is a touch cheaper than fancier venues like AMC. Bottom line: Neighborhood theatre surviving and reviving. Support them! read more

Been coming here for 25+ years! I have not been in quite some time. But wow! This place sure has changed and for the better! Still has that historical feeling but with nice fancy seats and amazing popcorn! With these new upgrades, there's no way I'm going to the big names at south center or downtown when I can go here in my own backyard and support local! My wife and I are First Order film lovers, and appreciate quaint, small theaters more than most, like the Crest and similar places. We live adjacent to the Majestic Bay in Ballard, so know well how good small independent theaters can be. But, the Admiral is, without question, the single filthiest public venue I have ever been in, and that includes the best dive bars in Seattle. The wall coverings are torn, some hanging, and are so dirty they defy belief. The same with the concrete floors, the seats, and the seat backs. It makes areas under freeway bridges seem as clean as surgical facilities. The place looks so run down its comical, followed by bewilderment, then finished by disgusted awe. Sure, it may be financially challenging to run a small 2nd-run theater, but, the complaints could easily be alleviated by cleanliness, something that only requires a few large containers of cleaning solution, mops, an industrial vacuum, and elbow grease. God knows what could be done with a few grand! The fact the owners don't care enough to do this shows utter disrespect for their customers. As it is, I wouldn't watch films there for free. read more

Even for a second run theater, The Admiral is a mess. This place could be golden, it really could. You can see the shadow of its former self in the lobby. It couldn't be more appealing, even now. The theaters are a fright, though. Stained, torn wall bunting, faded, dust-clogged fabric above that, concrete floors and filthy, sometimes broken seating make for an uncomfortable night at the movies. Sections of the ceiling were missing, and the sound of pouring rain came through the not-quite closed emergency exits leading into the dark parking lot the night we were there recently. The print of Moneyball we were watching had significant damage to the first minutes of most of the reels. Even the Hyundai and Louis Vuitton commercials they showed before the film were beaten to hell. These would be replaced for free by the advertiser and The Admiral couldn't be bothered to ask. A side note: who advertises Louis Vuitton luggage at a slummy second run theater? It boggles the mind. At $5.75 a ticket, it's cheaper than going to a first run show, but usually you are paying less for seeing something later than other moviegoers, not paying less for a late, beaten print of a movie shown in a dungeon-like setting. The Crest, also a run-down second run movie house, charges $3.00 a show and honestly it's nowhere near as worn and uncomfortable as The Admiral. I hope they get it together soon. I'd hate to see this place torn down, or turned into more goddamned condos. I had to edit this to reflect that my overall experience was fine. I'm going to go to the Admiral from time to time- the people were pleasant- but until some changes are made, I wouldn't want to buy food there, and I don't want to pay 5 dollars for a medium soda or whatever. I'd love for them to deserve my loyalty, and the exorbitant prices on their snacks and beverages, but right now my patronage feels like charity. Step up, Admiral. read more

The Admiral has a long history in West Seattle. I used to go here on field trips from Lafayette Elementary right down the block. I want to love this place... But it's had a long, steady, slide downhill. It's well beyond a charming level of decay, at this point it's just gross inside. They've tried to change up the focus, but I don't see the point: what used to be a great place to see 2nd-run movies on the cheap, now charges $11 per ticket for first-run movies. A plus side of this, is that it's never crowded --I saw the Hunger Games on a Sat night and there were about 20 people in the theater. (of course, there are only about 20 seats left that aren't broken, so that's about the max you can fit) What finally prompted me to post a review was the decline in the concession quality. Up until just recently the popcorn was INCREDIBLE. Like, weirdly good. Something has changed though, and now the popcorn is about average. I look forward to the day this place is remodeled, but until then I don't see much reason to return. read more

I'm not here to knock the theater. What I am here to knock is THE WORST production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show I've ever seen. I mean, I'm in my late 30's and have seen Rocky Horror 4 times. It was a bad mix of the Muppet Show and a bunch of bratty high school drama club kids and seriously unfunny misfits running the show. Some douche bag with the microphone wasted 45 minutes of my time before they even started the movie rambling on thinking he was entertaining. That pissed me off from the start. None of the production people were dressed as the Rocky Horror characters. Dr Frankenfurter was played by some bratty high school girl with some pink lingerie and a pig's nose. When you're down and out, unemployed or struggling financially, can't spend the big bucks for the currents movies and popcorn and don't mind the movies that came out 6 months to a year ago, then Admiral is the place to go. I love this movie theatre! This is where my huband and I go out for one of our date night places. We're not movie buffs and don't mind that the movie is 6 months old. For us, it's still current and what counts is that we can afford to go and enjoy the movie what others are paying bank braking money to "see it first". I LOVE their popcorn! It's these perfect and best tasting ROUND popcorn balls that I have ever seen! They have reasonable popcorn specials in medium and large sizes. There are no surround sounds, nothing is updated and everything is old and original looking. If you don't mind that, then this is the place to go see your 'old' movies. A MUST TRY! =) read more

If it ain't broke, don't fix it... but if it IS broke, for God's sakes, fix it!! As in: -Their Diet Coke tastes like rootbeer, and has since at least the summer. Every time I tell the girl working concessions, she feigns disappointment with a "Yes, we know..." Oh yeah, girly? I can't even drink this because it's so sugary. FIX it. -There's creepy broken seats covered in duct tape, some kind of wax paper sheet, and nails. Okay, maybe no nails, but still creepy. -I've noticed more and more that their "working" seats are lumpy and really uncomfortable. -It's freakin' freezing in here. I know heat costs money.. but I can't relax in a theater when it's so chilly I'm considering cuddling up with my sister's husband just for the body heat. That's desperate. -The teenager/20-something selling tickets could be a vampire or a zombie. I think he died in 1845 and is a member of the "undead" among us. -There might be a $5.50 ticket price, but the cost of candy is just as outrageous as the big guys. $4.00 for a box of Skittles you can find elsewhere for $1? Mmm, appetizing. Especially from a theater like this. So yes, they serve up good movies, but even this is faltering -- I had to wait until the week Inglourious Basterds came out on DVD for it to show at Admiral Theater!!?? That's a long wait, my friends. You might as well go to Blockbuster and be warm while you watch. In summary, there are many things about this theater that need to be looked at and fixed, and they hold me back from seeing movies here more often. read more

I want to love and support my neighborhood's ONLY movie theater. I have fond memories of watching cheap second-run movies, and was happy to try it when it started showing first run. Things started to go down hill right away when the woman selling the tickets insulted me and my family for WANTING TO SEE THE MOVIE SHE WAS SELLING TICKETS FOR. Concession had typically overpriced selections, which I don't mind of itself. It's part of the experience and I always plan for it. But... for that money I don't want the person to insult my wife, my son, or me for the horrible crime of bringing our business to their theater. Then, the theater was small, the sound was glitchy, and not always synched, it seemed, and the seats we uncomfortable. One saving grace. Fridays they offer a "mommy matinee," where families can bring babies and get out of the house for a change. I remember those days when my wife and I couldn't go out because of our baby, and we saw all movies on DVD for a couple of years. Having a place moms can go for that is great. So... if you're a mom (or dad) with a small baby and want to go see a movie, come here on Friday morning. If you are not, go elsewhere. For the same price you can not be insulted and sit in nicer chairs and experience better sound. read more

Although this is in my neighborhood, I've been hesitating for over a year to see my first movie in this theater based on the reviews posted here. I'm happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised by my 1st experience seeing the Revenant this week. It is true that the seats are not as comfortable as you would get at a new theater, but we watched a 2:40 movie plus previews and I was adequately comfortable throughout. And yes there were a few broken chairs. The refreshments were "refreshingly" reasonably priced, at least when compared to other movie theaters. It's true that there is a shabbiness to the place yes, but I feel previous reviewers have exaggerated this aspect. It felt old, but was clean. Not at all gross. It is also true that the sound does not rival more updated theaters. But once the lights went down and the movie started, I was not bothered by any of these things, at all. All in all. It's a great neighborhood theater, with the potential to be much more with continued support and renovation. I wouldn't hesitate a moment to attend my next movie there. read more

So, the Admiral may not be the newest theatre in town. Or the swankiest. It's a bit rough around the edges. It does not have stadium seating. Or cup-holders And, yet, I am always happy to return here. It is a second-run theatre, so is the perfect place to go see that film you missed the first time around. Or that you saw and want to see again. Or that you wanted to see, but not enough to to pay first-run, downtown prices for the honor. I actually find this theatre to be quite comfortable. The auditoriums are divided into three sections; so, if you are able to score a seat in the first row of one of the back two sections, you get a seat with a great view and unlimited leg room. (Though, even if you sit elsewhere, you will be fine; I don't think I've ever had a bad seat at the Admiral.) The staff here are friendly. And, the grooviest thing? I went to a movie at the Admiral recently. Its stated start time was 3:50 PM. And, it started at 3:50 PM. No commercials. No "we take you behind the scenes" drivel. No twenty minutes-full of plot-divulging trailers. Just the movie I paid (my very reasonable $6) to see. THAT totally puts the Admiral among the best places in Seattle to take in a movie. read more

Shoot, I just love this theater. Yeah it's seen better days. Yeah it's alittle on the ghetto side. But that's exactly why I love it, it has SO MUCH character and soul and I'm so comfortable there. I have plenty of leg room, the seats are spacious and not stiff, everybody's usually laid back (movie goers and staff), and the price is sweet! I really don't like new theater set-ups where I can't stretch my legs and the seat makes my ass numb ... and on top of that the new theater prices. As far as 2nd run theaters go, this one is about what you would expect. The lobby is spacious, but it smells super old as soon as you walk in. I seem to remember that they sell beer along with the usual popcorn and candy. That's a plus. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed the smell and the condition of the screening area if I had just gotten a beer. The screening area smelled about the same. It was a pretty large area with an adequate screen, but the seating was run down and some of the chairs looked like they would fall apart if they were sat upon. The first 15 minutes of the film were pretty much intolerable because the projectionist was adjusting the focus and couldn't get it quite right. I felt like I should have given them play-by-play feedback with the focus because they just went back and forth from being totally blurry to intolerably close (but not close enough.) Once they finally settled down, the rest of the film was slightly out of focus. The film was great, but the staff at Admiral had nothing to do with that. Overall, I appreciate this theater because we need more of these in Seattle. I just think that the space should be renovated and they should get some younger staff in there to liven up the place a bit. If you're going to sell beer at a theater, it shouldn't feel like grandma is selling it to you on your way into the screening area where your grandpa is running the projection. Fix the place up, screen some SIFF films here. Do some events that appeal to film lovers, not just cheapskates (I'm one of these). read more

The movie business is tough. It's a little hard to see how smaller theatres, like Admiral, and even the big chains are going to keep on going. It's more difficult to get people to go to movies anymore with Netflix, streaming video, on-demand, Podcasts, home plasma TVs that are larger than movie screens, etc. I suspect it's only five or ten years away when kids growing up will ask "what's a movie theatre?" That said, I hope that places like Admiral can last as long as they can. In a replace-your-business-with-a-new-condo world, it's a fading piece of Americana. Sure it shows some signs of age; from the peeling paint to the stained rugs, it's certainly a little dated. Sound system could use some upgrades too. But it's a great little neighborhood theatre. Since the place seems to be mostly empty, you've got a great selection of seats. Aside from the occasional crackle or two, the movies can still engross you. As for the details, it labels the movie rooms as Piers (i.e. "Pier 1", "Pier 2") and the ticket entrance was a small box at the doorway. A teenage-looking person was working both the ticket box and the concession-stand. In between, she seemed to be doing her geometry homework. They mostly show second run movies here and the prices are cheap: $5.50. Looking at the ads on the wall, they still do show the Rocky Horror Picture show once a month (first Saturday?). It's worth catching a movie here while you still can. So at least you'll be able to explain to your kids what they were. read more

I went to see Dark Knight Rises at the Admiral a month or two ago and was surprised to see this "venue" in such a state of disrepair, and the quality of the movie print so poor. I like the Admiral. More than I thought I'd like it, anyway. I was brought up going to super-nice new-Regal/AMC style theatres for new movies and going to places that look and feel like the Admiral for dollar movies. Second run movies. I guess in that time one dollar has become six. I'm not sure whether I blame inflation and the Admiral or just the Admiral. Anyway, this is a place for going to watch movies. Face covered in cream and a grin, I gulped down the maraschino I'd tongued from a stranger's mouth while drinking in the bras, panties, black leather and a ninja. Where am I? I'm standing on the stage at the Admiral Theaters for my first ever Seattle Rocky Horror Picture Show. They took my virginity, so to speak. That's what they call initiating us newbies to their show. Not that I have never been to the Show before. In fact, I love going to see Rocky Horror in all different places. Seattle is fantastic for this. Sitting at a bar, and then, later, standing in line, I loved how droves of (mostly 15-year olds from my calculations...hey, when you tell your parents you're going to a movie and get to bear boob, who wouldn't?) festive Horror Showers showed their colors, bared their breasts, hooted and hollered all of the quirky lines, all of the cheers, all of the songs. It was great to be packed in there throwing TP and Goobers, wearing fishnets and those kinky slut heels I bought at Charlotte Russe years ago. The crowd was great, and really made the night. But, I was impressed also with how this theater could really pack the house in its spacious, worn, comfy old seats, and keep bringing 'em in (first Saturday of the month every month midnight to two a.m.!). There's something special going on here. I loved the fresh paint on the old architecture style, and the stage where actors could play out the movie in front of the screen and in the aisles without distracting from the show. A perfect place for a midnight spectacle. read more

Cheap comfy seats - it's a little lackluster but in this day and age where we expect the 16 screen cineramic splendor of surround sound and 3d glasses.. what do you expect? I adore the admiral theatre. I live two blocks away and love waking up on Friday morning to see what new film that i talked myself out of not seeing downtown is playing. The goods: The new owners believe in heavy rotation. Gone are the days when THE QUEEN played for three months. Afternoon matinees are the best. I saw ALIEN VS. PREDATOR there and I was the only person in the whole theatre at two in the afternoon! The staff is super sweet and the place is very clean and orderly. I love to get there at least five minutes early and laugh at all the ads on the screen. There are some great ones!! The bads: the seats can become a little uncomfortable if a movie hits the two hour mark. When i saw GRINDHOUSE there, I needed a massage afterward. The popcorn is super bad. I stopped getting it because i would get sick after eating it and the soda machine needs to be replaced or something cuz all the sodas are flat. The candy is good though! Please bring back MIDNIGHT MOVIES! I got so excited when they started doing them, but it was the same old movies over and over. FIGHT CLUB, BOONDOCK SAINTS.....zzzz.... All in all, it is a great theatre and a blast to go too! Who ever decides the movies that will play there has a leaning toward horror films because they all play there! read more

The local theatre always creates intrigue and interest. Admiral theatre does the same but there's certainly something amiss at this West Seattle landmark. Whether it's between the sticky theater floors, the dingy bathrooms or the wall coverings falling from the theater walls. This place needs some serious TLC and some deep cleaning. Combine this with the broken theater chairs and the staff who could really care less that you've just walked through the door. Nothing about this cinema creates the experience one looks for when going to the movies for the evening. Don't get me wrong, I prefer a smaller locally owned theatre like this, but it's tough to be excited about local places when the experience is lack-luster. The Admiral Theater reminds of being a kid again. It's the same king of theater I saw my first movie in, The Rescuers and every time I walk in there I think of how excited I was to be going to a real movie theater all those years ago. I don't care that it's just shows second runs I still enjoy it and I can normally catch those movies I missed the first time around. The one down fall for me is that it's FREEZING cold in there. I've been tempted on numerous occasions to bring a big blanket in there with me to keep warm oh and you have to be careful with your seats some are a bit unstable. If you are a Rocky Horror fan they do midnight showings the first Saturday of every month at least they use to. read more

Old school! $11 got my wife and I a ticket to see Moneyball. The chairs aren't great and either is the decor. It really didn't bother me because the sound and picture was good! The movies are a couple of months old but who really cares. It's local and cheap! Check this place out if you want to kill a couple of hours on a rainy day. read more

I've been coming to the Admiral Theater since I was a little kid and my parents would bring me to watch A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve every year, and now that I'm living in the nieghborhood again, I couldn't be happier to have this right down the street! Sure it's an old theater, but its charming in its own way. Yes, the movies that come here are probably being released on DVD around the same time, but who cares? $5.75 for a showing makes it cheaper than your average rental and half the price of a regular movie ticket! My wish is that someone would swoop in and lend a little elbow grease (maybe just a few coats of paint and a deep clean!) to give this place the little facelift it deserves. It's a beautiful and nostalgic spot that serves to remind us of the "glory days" of going to the movies. I've always loved it and I always will! read more

The presence of the Admiral saves West Seattle residents from a trip down to Tukwila and at $8.50 for an afternoon show, it also saves a few pennies, although it never fails to surprise me how a couple of bottles of water and some popcorn can be almost as much as the tickets. If it keeps the Admiral open I shouldn't complain. We watched the new Star Wars there a couple of days ago in one of the two auditoriums which was thankfully equipped with DTS, but the lack of stadium seating means short people like me inevitably watch the film slightly obscured by the back of someone's head. Also if you want the latest in theatrical amenities, this shouldn't be your first choice. You will be holding your drink or placing it on the somewhat dirty floor and get a comfortable location because those seats don't recline. One full star goes to the Admiral's character. It's nice to escape from the unimaginative cookie cutter storefront of your local AMC. read more

One of the last few true neighborhood theaters. After changing hands and, more recently, getting a few dollars from the local government, Admiral Theaters is about to get a major overhaul this summer/fall: adding two more screens (going from 2 to 4), refreshing the entrance, and some touch-ups, which I hope will also include an investment in new seating and the restrooms. This top-to-bottom upgrade comes on the heels of replacing the antiquated projectors last year with top-of-the-line models that rival even the newest theaters. Things are moving in the right direction, and I hope West Seattlites keep the faith with this theater during its turn-around and after. Prices are good for the contemporary experience. Living Social deals will knock a few dollars off the price of admission. Though unadvertised, soda refills are a dollar. Popcorn Wishlist for the next few months? Keep the building's aesthetics quaint and local-feeling, but make the movie experience comparable to the big chains. It's a hard balancing act, but West Seattle doesn't need to become the next SLU. I usually feel like I'm going to get my money's worth when I go to an edgy or independent film at a place like Admiral Theatres. This time was no exception. One of my best friends invited me to go see "Lion's Den," a movie about an Argentinian woman falsely accused of a crime who is incarcerated and her challenges with her relationships and her son. This was an exceptional flick that my friend told me won awards at the Cannes Film Festival and was presented here in Seattle as part of the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. The film really brought out so many aspects of what it's like to be in a relationship with a latina who is passionate, tender, outspoken, adamant, and explosive. As a man who was in a relationship with a woman from Veracruz, Mexico for many years, I could really relate to it. Beautiful movie. I highly recommend it. Thanks Admiral. It's been a long time since I felt a sense of character and history when standing in a theater lobby. The Admiral has lots of it. Yes, some of the decorations are a tad faded, some paint could use freshening, but it's a great, cozy place to see a film. Ticket and counter staff were earnestly welcoming and helpful. Its not much but its here, - a little 2 screen cinema, just squeaking by on $5 tix and all you can eat buckets of popcorn, with seats that are a bit too bouncy (but not sticky.) I like it better than the big theatres in town, not just because of the price, but because they pick films that are generally worth seeing, just after they've left the big, expensive venues. If I had to make any suggestions, I wish they would have a fairly constant run of kid's films. Other than that, its just fine the way it is. read more

A nice older neighborhood theater, which makes parking in the nearby residential area fairly easy. I do enjoy the variety of restuarants nearby for either a before or after snack. There is also a snack bar inside. Bathroom is also fairly large which is a bonus compared to some of Seattle's other older theaters. I dont quite understand the purpose of the upstairs area, but have seen it used for special events, it does add a little something to the space though. Wouldn't go out of my way to see a movie here, but if I lived nearby I would probably frequent it. read more

What's not to love about Admiral Theatre? It's shaped kinda like a boat (long and narrow). The price for movies is incredibly cheap. And for years they put on the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday nights (I haven't gone recently, so I'm not sure if they're still doing it).
