Had hoped for more from this allegedly haunted location. The only scary thing was the food.

I don't like to write negative reviews, but sometimes it just can't be avoided. After hearing a few people speak highly of the Adobe Deli, we decided to stop by on our way back from a camping trip. As we were hungry, we were a bit worried about it being crowded on Sunday at lunch time. To our relief, they still had plenty of tables. The first thing we noticed is the prices didn't match their web site. There's never an excuse to have an outdated website, but this wasn't even close. For example the green chile cheeseburger listed at $12 on their website was $20. Annoying, but not the end of the world. 15 minutes later, when the waitress finally got around to taking our order, they were out of some of what we ordered--for example the New Mexico Chicken Rolls--which they hadn't had for months but hadn't taken off the menu. We altered our order and waited. And waited. And waited. My girlfriend ordered a beer, which was delivered to the wrong table. About 45 minutes later they finally bring our appetizers out. Except we had to watch the waitress wander around the restaurant as we waived wildly at her trying to figure out which table had ordered them. She disappeared before returning and delivering them. The wings were darned good. The fried green beans were decent. The jalapeno poppers were cold in the center. Like refrigerator cold. Presumably they were frozen and not heated all the way through. They were nasty. But at least they were delivered. The cod basket we ordered was nowhere to be found. The waitress promised to rectify it. 20 minutes later they finally brought out the medium burger we had ordered to share. The waitress brought us an extra plate so we could share, but after having been there over an hour we still didn't have silverware. So we had to wait until we could flag her down to get a knife. Upon cutting the burger (which we were looking forward to because we were hoping for local, high quality beef--especially given it's a $20 burger), and instead of medium it was somewhere between well done and charcoal. And still no cod. We asked the waitress that brought our entree about it, and she promised to look into it. As we were eating we witnessed other errors. The appetizer for the table to the left of us got delivered to the table to the right of us. Other orders were missing something or wrong entirely. Finally, after we've choked down the burger and are ready to pay, the waitress comes back and tells me our cod appetizer should be right out. At this point, we're close to 90 minutes after we ordered. Um... no thanks! Upon request, she promised to take it off the bill. She returned, it had not been taken off the bill. She insisted it wasn't on the bill--which it wasn't as a line item, because it was ordered as part of the appetizer platter. After some grumbling, she finally agreed to take $6 off (not even a quarter of the platter price). Whatever, we just wanted out. Despite the fact they also took the beer off, it was still a nearly $50 meal (including bare minimum 15% tip) for food that was undercooked, overcooked, and otherwise unremarkable, save for the wings which were the single bright spot. And nearly two hours of our day gone for something that should have taken half that time. I'd recommend not going at all. If you do, order the wings. And don't go hungry. read more

Adobe Deli was recommended by hotel staff as well as a few other folks. Worth the drive from town. The place is, well, very interesting. Pretty wide selection to choose from on the menu. The French Onion Soup was among the best I have ever had. At first glance, steak prices seemed a bit high but when the ribeye arrived, I wondered if I would be able to eat all of it. Cooked to perfection!! Usually overlooked, the baked potato was awesome. Service was on point, attentive and friendly. If I am ever back in the area, I will definitely be back! read more

First off, let me just say that I thought my brother was going to drive us out to the middle of dessert and murder us. That's how secluded this place is. Not much to look at was my first impression. Wasn't even sure what building the restaurant was in. Turns out it was once a school, maybe even a post office and all the memorabilia from back in the day is packed into this place. A lot of history behind this building as well as a lot of stuffed and mounted game animals. Still wasn't sure how I felt about it even after we were seated, but let me tell you that it didn't take long before more and more people started to show up for dinner. Let's start with the fried mushroom and zucchini platter. Really tasty. French onion soup... the BEST I've ever tasted. It comes with your meal (soup or salad). Ribs, T-bone steak and beef kabob were all cooked to perfection. Yes food is pricey, but it's an understatement when I tell you they serve generous portions. My pics will speak for themselves. As hidden as this place is, it's has gotten excellent reviews. Food Network needs to make a visit and put this place on the map... seriously...you need a map to find it. My compliments to the chef. I don't often mention a business unless it is exceptional. On my way home from AZ to CO, I stopped in Deming, NM, for gas and a bite to eat. I hadn't eaten all day. I asked the convenience store attendant if there was a family run home cooking type restaurant nearby. I didn't want fast food; I wanted a good meal. She thought for a moment and told me to go to the Adobe Deli. She told me to turn left at the car dealership and drive like I was going out of town and then take the first right turn. What she failed to mention was that it was far from town. I found the car dealership and turned left then drove and drove and drove. I'm out in the middle of nowhere thinking that I've been sent to Stabbyville and I was going to wake up in a hole waiting to be a skin suit. But, I shook it off and asked myself where my sense of adventure was. To my delight, Adobe Deli was a great steakhouse/sports bar. I had a wonderful meal. Staff was nice, place was clean and the food was great. Definitely a recommend. read more

Our waitress was very nice but too busy. French onion soup was good, salad is fresh but very little for $6.95 ( too expensive) with some lettuce and peppers on it. T-bone steak $36.99 is very thin and tough to chew ( although we ordered medium rare). For 2 people bill came to $102 before tipping. Won't be back. read more

Always love an adventure and Adobe Cafe provides one! Just finding it and the front door is the first. Slide up to the bar and strike up a conversation with the locals is the second. Quirky would not even begin to describe Adobe Deli and I am confident they would not mind that description! Adobe Deli is an experience even in the drive out there. You take highway 549 either exiting I-10 at Akela and driving West on 549 or coming from Deming driving East on 549. You will see multiple dairies driving either direction - Adobe Deli is on a road located opposite the dairies. There is a sign. If you pass the dairies you have gone too far in either direction. Next you may be wondering why a person would go to so much trouble to eat at a place that others have described as museum like, dirty, and dark. First, you would do it because it is a fabulous experience for a tourist or a local, it really brings you to the Wild West both in decor and in literal location. It's just fun, there is a giant taxidermy alligator (or crocodile - not sure), lots of western antiques, and a giant screen where you could watch a game from the bar or dining area if you wished. Second, the food is good, it may not be the best if you are comparing it to places like Ruth's Chris Steakhouse - BUT it is the best in this area by far. Third, there is a definite bang for your buck! The food is basically a double or triple portion - you will have leftovers or two of you could easily share a plate. Fourth, the FRENCH ONION SOUP - order it, order it, order it! That soup is the best ANYWHERE! Fifth, by eating at the Adobe Deli you are supporting the economy of a small town, and gaining an experience - why wouldn't you take that opportunity! Every time we drive through Deming we stop at Adobe Deli. We love it!! The food is great. The French onion soup is to be compared with anyplace in the world. It's the best!! First timers when you turn down the little country road, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, keep going, and when you see the parking lot full of cars and ranchers pickups you know your in the right place. In fact, if you go on the weekend, make a reservation, or you may have little chance of getting in. The keebob skewers and the skewer of pork ribs are the best, the ribeye is the best, plan on sharing, or plan on taking leftovers with you, it's great for the next day drive. read more

Ivan one of the cooks told me about this amazing experience! His brother Jay was cooking today! The building is literally an amazing museum of antiques and very eye grabbing decor! The female server went above and beyond the customer service bar of excellence! The owner could add a bowl of rolls with butter and salad with my ribeye especially for the price we pay for the steak. The FOOD! OMG you have to have the onion soup and the ribeye! So exemplary in every way. Best steak I have ever enjoyed and I have been to the best steak houses all over the USA (commercial truck driver)!!!!! Jay the cook did an exemplary job at making my steak delicious! We just recently found this place, Wonderful food, we stop here now once a month when we race. First 2 times we had a wonderful, funny & efficient waitress- I'm horrible with names she is really tall. This last time we had a new waitress she was nice enough, but charged us for our SODA refills from the fountain- if they were cans I would understand, if it was listed in the menu I would understand but neither was and then she looked at us like we had 3 heads when I told her to take it off that I was not paying for those. Next time we will definitely ask for a more experienced waitress, But we will continue to go back because the place is interesting and the food and drinks are good read more

A bit off the beaten path and SO worth the trip. Maybe the best Reuben AND French onion soup I have ever had!! The sandwich was big enough to spilt, so we did. Third or fourth time we've been here, but those visits have widely spaced over more than ten years. Service was a bit inattentive at first but got better. Food took a long time to come and half of our order was well behind the first half's arrival. As to the food, the fries , giant fries and onion rings were all good. The fried shrimp and corn pockets while okay came directly from Sysco or whatever food service company they use. Fried clams were so overcooked as to be nearly burnt. The jalapeño poppers were good and may have been home made. The Ruben sandwich was enormous and I was told was very good. Definitely a mixed bag this time, but the ambiance of the place itself is always fun and good for a few laughs or finding some piece of the past that piques your interest. read more

Took 40 min to get a glass of water and order and then two hours to get our food (which was also not what we ordered). The absolute worst. I never leave reviews but this one had to be left. The Adobe Deli is almost a landmark; definitely a must. The food and the staff make it feel like you are already "a local." The ambience is unique in that it heralds stuffed and mounted predators. However you may feel about that, i find the only discrepancy with this establishment is it's' desolate location... but in a way, that too, adds to it's character. If you are looking to increase your chances of getting corona virus, this is the place for you! They were not interested in the least bit in following the guidelines set out by the state. When you walk in the place it is dark and smells musky, you can call it ambience I call it dirty! I saw one person wearing a mask and she was behind the bar. It did not appear that anyone else was interested in following the guidelines. The sanitation procedure was a young kid using the same towel to wipe down the table the seat and seat bottoms. Needless to say I high tailed it out of there! The food is not worth dying over. UPDATE:I just received message from management that I am a moron. Apparently they did not like my review? I'm not sure how you would find this place if you weren't from the area. Once you enter the front door the place is super dark, like you should probably wear night vision goggles if you want to find your table in the dining room. I doubt the shelves have been dusted in the last 50 years and I wouldn't just go around touching things. It's really a dive, but I guess some people like that sort of thing. The food is really good if you can get over the stuffed dead animals staring at you while you eat. There is even a stuffed gator in a glass display. Their onion soup is a meal in itself and the best I've ever had. The portions are huge. Like Flinstone huge. Definitely bring your appetite and hand sanitizer. We just wanted a cheap quick lunch but got so much more. It wasn't that cheap or quick but it was delicious. I got the Rueben. My niece had the onion rings with her bbq beef sandwich and I wish I had ordered them. She loved her bbq beef. My nephew scarfed down the onion soup and said it was really filling-a lot of cheese. Our waiter was adorable. He showed us snapchats of the menu and was very (rightfully) enthusiastic about many of them menu items. Nonalcoholic drinks are bottomless. I highly recommend. read more

This place is a literal palace of antiquity. It's a bit off of the beaten path, but so worth it. Their menu is much more than expected. I first ordered a Bologna sandwich, that is until I flipped the menu over and found duck! Who'd of thunk it?! My waitress suggested that I go with the Onion soup over the salad, and it is so worth it. While I waited for things to be served, I strolled down the hall taking pictures all the way. Well, I ended up in the library with a zoo of native animals. This place will peg your curiosity meter with local plunders. How many generations of collections are stored here? We had to try this place the reviews were great but unfortunately not for us. We arrived at 12:35 on a Tuesday and we got our food at roughly 1:30pm. A bbq sandwich and a pastrami sandwich with a french onion soup. I asked if the potato salad was homemade and was told yes, homemade from Sam's club doesn't count. Definitely store bought sadly. There was a total of 4 parties, why would it take so long to serve a sandwich? Who knows. Their menu is extensive in options and they do sell beer and liquor. Steaks and seafood are also on the menu Best part of our meal? The giant chocolate chip cookie ‍. Would I drive back out for this? Nope not at all. Would I recommend it? Came to this place based on a recommendation from hotel staff. Had they not told me 'it's in the middle of nowhere', I would have thought 'there's no way it's out here' and turned around. Glad I didn't! First, don't let the name fool you, this is a restaurant. An eclectic, hodge-podge of odd collectibles and taxidermy decorate the place. Even finding the entrance, to what isn't obviously the restaurant of the available building choices, is an adventure. I went for what I've found to be the most difficult entree to find properly seasoned and cooked; a steak. Ribeye to be exact. Most of the time my experience is 'I can do better'. This place served cooked to order on a sizzling skillet and was very, very good. Would have liked a bit more seasoning to make the meat flavor 'pop'. As with all ribeyes, the edges were the best part. I don't mean to under sell the steak.....this place was by far better than 99% of anyplace else. I went with the side salad which was a nice contrast. Their onion soup came highly recommended, but I decided that was too much rich food for me. I never checked on bread options, but I wish I had as a meal like a steak meal isn't a fully rounded meal without bread. Had been told by multiple people we needed to make a trip out here when in the area. They also mentioned that the reubins here are wonderful. What an eclectic place, there is a little bit of everything. Tons to look at. We came for a late lunch, arrived right about 4pm. Took a look at the menu, even though we knew we wanted to try the reubins. They have a pretty decent amount of offerings here.. We ordered, and were told that they guy who makes the sandwiches, had already left. WHAT? I guess sandwiches here have to be made by a specialist. So we looked at the menus and ended up ordering a cheeseburger and a french dip. I also ordered a bowl of french onion soup. I had read the review, so I had to try it. Our lunch took a little while to get to us. Cheeseburger, good, nothing spectacular. The dip had a generous amount of meat in it and wasn't full of fat. Great aujus. But the soup, oh man, that was excellent. Nice rich broth without being overly salty, and a huge portion of cheese melted on top. Service was good. Only negative, with it being so dark inside, it was kind of hard to get some pictures. In summary, if your in the area of Deming, it's worth the trip out. Just be forwarned, if you want sandwiches get there before 4 pm. read more

We heard good things about this place and were looking forward to checking it out. It is unique and interesting. I had the ribs which were excellent. My husband had the ribeye and was very disappointed. We told the waitress several times that it was not good. She kept saying she was sorry. It was no better than something I would buy at Walmart and cook at home. Always tough and disappointing. I'm not sure it was even a ribeye steak. We should have sent it back. Also we understood that the baked potato comes with the dinner. However the waitress asked if we wanted cheese and bacon and we said yes. Not realizing that was $5.00 extra for the cheese and bacon. The cheese was too thick and stringy and I ended up pulling it off to get to the potato. I'm not sure we will go back. read more

The 3 steaks and hamburger were all overcooked (ordered medium rare and received well done) after waiting nearly an hour for the food. Paying $30 for a steak and waiting an hour for it to come back overcooked is objectively unacceptable. The waitress was also bit 'rough around the edges' so to speak. Otherwise, the decor and ambiance are interesting: lots of dead animals on the walls and a couple of life-size Trump cutouts. It also looks to be a former school theater or something similar that's been repurposed as a restaurant. Wasnt that busy on a Saturday at 2pm but ended up waiting 45 minutes before we were served. Madison the waitress was so sweet and kind and really did her best being the only one there as the bartender and waitress! That girl needs a raise! Once we got the food it was pretty good. Heard a lot of good things about the onion soup but it was alright. The bread was really soggy in it and felt slimy as the texture. We had an amazing experience here! We were only staying in town for a night during a road trip and found this interesting place online and decided to try it! The food portions were insane and I doubt we were able to finish even a third of the food. If you order a sandwich, be warned: it's basically TWO sandwiches per order. I got the bbq sandwich, which had delicious chopped brisket, a bit fatty, but well distributed throughout. My boyfriend got the French dip and he loved it! The onion soup was as good as everyone else says, so much cheese, and the seasoning and flavor of the broth was unlike any other I've had. They have the best fries and onions rings. The bar is crazy too, they have over 300 liquors to choose from. Now for the actual building... If you are into rarities and antiques you will love this place. The people who work there are incredibly nice and even gave us a small tour even though they had closed. I really don't know where to begin... my wife and I were traveling from Tucson to RUIDOSO NM. Several times we ALMOST stopped at the Adobe Grill in Deming, NM. This time we did stop, would have been better off if we taken a pass. Had good reviews, looked like pretty cool place....but it ended up more like the Eagles HOTEL CALIFORNIA lyric... "This could be Heaven or this could be HELL." We were seated, another group of 5 came in after us and we're seated. A drink order was placed... we waited ... and waited. The waiter then took the larger groups order. Still waiting for our drinks, an ice tea and a Dr Pepper. Finally waitress took our order, nothing to complicated... A Ruben with potato salad. A ham and cheese with macaroni salad. All right,on our way to our meal... We thought...Approximately 45 minutes later the waitress set a plate of French fries and a bowl of Mac N Cheese in front of my wife. Mind you, she ordered Macaroni salad and let the waitress know.. She said the cook said they don't HAVE Macaroni salad, although it is on the menu, which the waitress acknowledged. She said the cook said, "Just give her the Mac N Cheese." I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode with the soup nazi. Mac and cheese was box type, French fries were pretty good... Wait there is more...About 15 minutes late the waiter sheepishly approached us. More bad news. He said the cook said they don't serve sandwiches after 2PM... yes it was 3:05... But we had ordered just before 2PM. And now we are told they don't serve them almost an hour later...The staff was pleasant, a bit confused and probably on the job fir a few days.. We walked out... not angry just wondering if we were on a TV program about Impossible happenings at restaurants... as a matter of fact we were both laughing as we got up and left...I don't blame the staff, but no management to speak of. The french onion soup as recommended by all did not disappoint. The cheesey goodness the delicate onion flavor and satisfying. We split a ribeye that was easily plenty for 2. The the baked potato was simple yet just right. I ordered a side salad and it was even fresh tasty and great. The ribeye, perfect thickness cooked perfectly medium rare, meaty meaty flavor grilled and delicious. Even had room for carrot cake. The iced tea was cold and delicious and promptly refilled. I'm at the comedy show this evening. It's Saturday July 24th. It's funner, watching my hair grow. The food we ordered at 8:05 didn't get here until 10:30 and that's an hour and a half into the comedy show. Let's figure that out.. 8:05 to 10:30 thats 2 and a half hours, and my wife's filet mignonette was ordered rare, was dried out and miserable to eat. Our friends ordered hamburgers, they couldn't eat them. I ordered the ribs. It's so dark in here, with the show going on I can't see to cut the ribs so it's a major chore just keeping them on the plate.. They are ribs.. but it's just pork, no sauce. A tad greasy, thank goodness, that's the only thing helping each bite to slide down. The comedians, must be from the local VFW. The First Lady was so drunk she was laughing at her own jokes. The jokes only appealed to the really drunk people, and she tried to make fun of women, but it was just a sorry sorry woman up there. The second guy was a very timid fellow, couldn't hear him through the PA. So the management turns up the PA up all the way. The table next to me, was louder than the guy on stage. The other comedians just yelled into the already turned up too loud, PA and I simply had a miserable time. Jokes against women, jokes about Mexicans, jokes about the city we live in...they just didn't cut it for me. Hey let's talk about the major blowout with the bill. The bar staff didn't know what bar tab was yours, even though you dropped off your credit card. The wait staff didn't know which table got what food. Somebody at another table, got my meal ticket, then it was reversed, then the people we sat with, got the ticket for the whole table. Then the ticket I was going to pay, didn't have drinks..let's just say they need a better system. read more
