The Fireplace Inn is charming and within close proximity to the heart of downtown. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are clean. All staff members are friendly and helpful. No two rooms are the same and they all feature a gas or electric Fireplace. Pets are welcome at an additional $50 fee per night per pet. The amenities include free internet, flat screen tv, a mini fridge, hair dryer, iron, and a traditional coffee maker. Parking is limited due to a very small parking lot but there is street parking available. We have stayed here multiple times and look forward to returning in the future! read more

It once was a great place where my family loved to stay. Unfortunately, something has changed in the ownership and/or management of this property recently. Guest experience is clearly no longer the priority. From what I saw, the emphasis is purely on maximizing revenue. Here's the story. I booked a stay through Capital One Travel using my Visa card. I received my booking confirmation, but no check-in instructions were ever sent by the hotel. This was later confirmed by the owner himself. The hotel's website listed two different closing times: 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. My 9-year-old son and I arrived around 6:50 p.m., only to find the office closed. The sign on the reception door said business hours ended at 6:00 p.m. I immediately started calling the only phone number listed on the hotel's website and Apple Maps. I called approximately five times between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. No one answered or returned my calls. Standing outside after dark with a child and no place to stay was incredibly stressful. Fortunately, I found a motel nearby at the last minute. The following morning, the front desk employee apologized and called the owner to request a refund. He then told me: "We will give you a refund if you'll be able to PROVE that you called the phone number written on the reception door." So, to summarize: * Three different versions of business hours. * No check-in instructions. * Multiple unanswered calls to the hotel's publicly listed number. * And I was expected to prove that I had called a different number. Are you guys kidding me? Later, the owner called me personally. I expected an apology and an attempt to make things right. Instead, almost the entire conversation was devoted to explaining why I should have called their emergency number. He gave me so many explanations of what I should have done differently that, by the end of the conversation, I genuinely started feeling like I was the one who had failed. The hotel ruined our stay at multiple levels, yet somehow I ended up being blamed for calling the wrong number. His quotes: "I'm sorry if we made your experience in Carmel horrible." "It's up to you if you choose to never stay with us again." After a long and unproductive discussion, I was offered a 50% base rate refund for the night we never got to use. One week later, I still hadn't received it and had to call my bank to step in. It wasn't a hospitality experience. It felt more like a hostility experience. Other inconveniences included no on-site parking or advance guidance, resulting in a $40 ticket; a difficult-to-operate fireplace with worn instructions; and no maintenance assistance when it shut off around 9:00 p.m. We stayed for one more night, as we had planned. Later that evening, a group of drunk guests talked and laughed loudly in the courtyard until around midnight. After that, someone next door was having loud sex that was clearly audible through the walls. Bottomline: This hotel may work well for guests who never encounter any problems and don't mind a livelier nighttime atmosphere. I'll be staying elsewhere next time. Decided to stay for our anniversary but was very disappointed. The Philippine lady at the counter had the worst attitude, no waters in the rooms, no ac, and not to mention the HORRIBLE parking situation. When I explained to the pinoy lady that there was no parking for us and she said, " figure it out, park on the street " like what the hell!? I pay my hard earned cash here, very expensive too by the way and I get crap service!! Very disappointing....will NOT stay again and I will not recommend this place to anyone.. Their website showed many hanging geranium planters and greenery of which we saw none from the room we were given, and for this reason it was disappointing. The refrigerator was in the bathroom which was odd and a bit unsavory - but at least any noise emanating from it was not heard when the bathroom door was closed, unlike other hotels I've stayed in. On the positive side, it was relatively quiet, except for the large family across the hall that kept their front door that faced ours open most of the time they were there. The location was convenient for walking down San Carlos Street where shops, galleries, and restaurants are located, the room was a decent size and comfortable. However, for the price, I would not consider returning here because of the first two issues listed. read more

We had a lovely stay. The front office staff was very helpful in getting us oriented to downtown and to the nearest restaurants. We have some mobility problems and walking is limited. Our room was not fancy but very clean and quiet, which we appreciated. We had all we needed. The grounds are beautiful, and I enjoyed some reading time on the patio. Parking is not the easiest thing, which is the only negative we see. But this is Carmel, and you have to know going in, parking can be a hassle. They even sent us off with a snack! As luck would have it, my dog hurt his paw and had to have surgery yesterday and our reservation was for this Sunday July27-29, I wanted to change the date to another date and I booked reservation through a third party and had trouble changing it! My wife, my adult daughter, my 12 year old grand daughter, their well behaved Lab Gigi and I spent a couple of nights here and were very pleased. The Fireplace Inn is sort of retro in keeping with the Carmel ambience - keys instead of electronic locks etc. They have certain rooms that are dog friendly (for a $100 fee). My daughter and her entourage shared a room and my wife and I had a separate room. Each room has a gas fired "fireplace" hence the name. It was early April and the fireplace was appreciated. Each room seems to have a different layout. Our room had a regular sized bathroom plus an additional tiny bathroom which was very convenient. Staff was friendly. There is no restaurant but downtown is close. The lot does not have as many parking spaces as there are rooms so you may have to park on the street. All in all a nice place and not your typical Holiday Inn. read more

This is a very homey hotel, very clean and upgraded towels and friendly staff. Great location, walking distance to great restaurants and other shops. The beds are very comfortable and the front staff, Augustina is wonderful!. The reception was lukewarm and underwhelming. The lady at check in was strictly business and very robotic, not personable at all. But the lodging itself is super cozy and charming! My family stayed in the Dolores III cottage. It's a small one bedroom (without doors/walls to separate) with 1.5 baths, front yard with porch/patio, small full kitchen, 2 small closets, and washer/dryer combo. Two TVs - one in living room and one in "bedroom", two dressers in the "bedroom". It's perfect for 2 adults or 2 adults with 2 young children. It is super adorable. The Fireplace Inn is in a great location and the beds are comfy. I liked the landscaping around the place. But apart from those, there's very little else to say that paints it in a positive light. For the amount we paid, it's very poor value for money. $470 per night all in. First of all, the parking is a challenge. Seven spots for the residents to battle over and hardly anywhere else to park nearby unless you get extremely lucky. Not an easy problem for the owners to resolve, understandably, but something to note when considering potential places to stay. But the thing that really disappointed me was the poor quality of the room (San Juan). It is extremely dated. A TV from a different era, furniture that looked like it came from a goodwill store, and very badly painted wood paneled walls that seem like they tried priming it and gave up. The bathroom looks like it hasn't been updated since the late 80s. There's a coffee machine on the vanity and ONE caffeinated drip coffee bag. What if both of us want coffee - we have to share one? No breakfast but that was known ahead of time. It's really disappointing that they take so much money off customers and seemingly refuse to update the place and offer more modern services that are appropriate for the cost, all while seemingly having no staff in the office all the time we were there anyway. Possibly the cutest place we were stayed. We stayed in the San Carlos room with our 10 month old puppy Raisin. Walking distance to the beach and restaurants. Reminded me of Big Bear by the Beach. Loved the toiletries. Nice large bathroom and had ADA compliant seat and bars to hold on to for my mom. Instructions for the gas fireplace was clear and check in staff was super nice. They have a ice machine behind the check in building. Felt like I was in a OG fairy tale. Just outside was the sound of a fountain. Very peaceful to fall asleep to. Parking on 4th street has no restrictions. Bathroom was it's own large room with space for styling tools. Once the fireplace started it got real warm overnight. Do not go to this Inn during car week. It was noisy until midnight every night. Many streets were closed and it was hard to get to the Inn from Ocean Avenue. At the Inn there was dogs barking in units, drunk people partying on the patio until 1am. Above my unit the tenants were very noisy all night. They were walking very hard and I heard every step. The worst part was many days I could not find a parking space in the Inn parking lot. They have 20 units and 10 parking spaces. Trying to find a parking space on the street was impossible. The location is excellent but don't move your car out of the parking lot or you will never find a space again. The price was very high and my room was very small and noisy. I am exhausted. Whenever we visit Carmel-by-the-Sea we stay at the Carmel Fireplace Inn on San Carlos Street. It is located relatively close to the town center and near dining and shopping. It is a short walk from Carmel Beach, which is my favorite walk in the morning or late afternoon. The complimentary breakfast is a nice spread of pastries, fruit, coffee and juices. I surprised my girlfriend with a weekend getaway to Monterey to see the Rebels and Renegades Music Festival. I was pretty last minute getting a reservation. When I booked our room , I noticed check-in was 3:00 pm. I wanted to catch a performance at the festival at 2:45, and the last act ended at 11:00 pm. So I asked if we could check in early. The desk clerk said she couldn't guarantee early check-in , but the rooms were usually ready by two if we wanted to try. I decided I would go to the festival and if we were allowed to leave the fairgrounds and return later, we would catch the performance I wanted, go check into the Fireplace Inn, and return. I didn't want to late check-in after 11:00. At about 1:45, I got a text message from the Inn saying my room was ready and we could check in! This blew me away, in a good way. I had never heard of a hotel doing that. We left after our show, and checked in at the Inn. The desk clerk was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was really cute and clean. The location was perfect, right in the middle of town. We walked to dinner and right across the street to breakfast in the morning. We also walked from the hotel about 8 short blocks to the cove and beach. We were a little slow checking out, and again the desk clerk was very nice, and we weren't charged. So checking in was an easy process. The room was actually very spacious we had two queen beds in separate rooms I appreciate that the rooms were separated by a door and each room had its own restroom but only one room had a shower which was fine! The indoor fireplace heated up the room nicely and was a great touch. Also the sofa turned into a bed so we each slept in our own bed. Very romantic setting. The parking lot is very small so there is no designated parking it's first come first serve so if your able to park your car upon arrival I suggest just leaving it parked there for the remainder of your stay. There is a refrigerator in the room but no microwave. There is a microwave in the office just incase. No coffee, tea, fruit or anything like that in the office so not super hospitable but they do have maps of Carmel. Overall the room was clean and comfortable and the fire place was a great added touch but the parking was limited and for the price being paid I feel as if each customer should have at least one designated parking space. read more

The property was close to galleries, stores, and entertainment. Each room is designed different. Our room was cute and small. The bathroom is really small and could be a little tight for some people. They have spots you can sit down outside. They have ice available if needed. The property is surrounded with beautiful plants and flowers. Loved it! They do have lack of parking for your stay so once you park you don't want to leave and lose your spot. Luckily though you can walk to the beach. It is great going down but walking back up the hill is no fun. The do offer a continental breakfast of yogurt, pastries, baffles, fresh fruit and drinks. They also have a bedroom tray that you bring back when done or you can sit in the cute little dinning area. The only thing was no A/C and not good if you are heat sensitive. We stay at the Carmel fireplace at least twice a year. The rooms are small but very clean. Great location, just a few streets up from all the action. Service is friendly and very accommodating. I enjoyed staying at the Carmel Fireplace Inn and would definitely stay here again. The front desk staff were all very friendly, welcoming and helpful. I stayed in the Lincoln room #22 as it was one of the dog friendly rooms available. You walk along a charming little path to get to the room which shares a courtyard that features a table with an umbrella and chairs. The room was on the smaller size, but perfect for one person and two large, folding dog crates. The bathroom features a shower that's slightly dated, but worked perfectly fine. Not all of the windows opened, and it would have been nice to have more airflow, especially during the day. That being said, the room had a dutch door/ stable door that's divided horizontally in such a fashion that the bottom half may remain shut while the top half opens. Also, the windows all had venetian blinds and no curtains, so morning light can wake you. One of the best features of the hotel is the location and proximity to town, and yet it's far enough away to avoid the noise. The room was located by the car park, which means you may hear a car or two coming or going during the evening if you're a light sleeper. The inn has several parking spots that are first come, first served. There is also ample street parking along neighboring streets. Overall, I enjoyed my two night stay and would definitely stay there again. read more

Cancelled on Monday, date we learned of surgery, for Thursday arrival, too late. Said we would come in January after surgery, nope. No stars. They have bedbugs!!! We tried to tell them and they didn't care. Dolores cottage 1. I found a huge bedbug on my pillow as I was checking out. I then looked in the sheets and there were obvious rusty stains. We told the man upon check out and hoped for the best. I tried to disinfect and wash all my things before entering my home. But now my 20 month old daughter is being eaten alive. It is exactly perfect timing for the eggs to have hatched seeing as the bug I found here was large and the ones I found crawling in my daughter's room at small and new. We stayed on a Friday-Sunday weekend and by Tuesday my daughter had her first bite (she did not come on the trip). Now we are finding the actual bugs. It's a nightmare. Once I had proof I called and emailed the fireplace in asking for a refund and for them to treat the place for the sake of other guests. They just sent me a long email with pictures saying there is no evidence of bed bugs. They refused to refund me and they aren't going to treat the room. Now we have to pay 1800$ to have our house treated but all the hassle it involves. We have not travelled anywhere for a long time and the infestation came from the fireplace inn. I was going to hold off on reviewing to give them the benefit of the doubt when it came to handling the situation. Have stayed a lot of hotels in Carmel, and this has been one of my favs. When we checked in, the woman at the front desk was very helpful and answered all our questions. She even gave us a map without asking. The room was clean and comfortable. There isn't an air conditioning unit, so keep that in mind when booking a room if it's hot outside. Where do I start? 1. The desk clerk, Augustina doesn't show up to the front office till like 3pm in the afternoon? How does that make any sense. The front office is closed till then so if you show up early to check in good luck. 2. I parked my car in the back around 11am, alerted their sister property across the street I was doing that. Since , low and behold the front office is closed and I couldn't alert them. I told the sister property I have a room Fireplace inn and they said you can't check in till 3pm. They said I could leave my car there. At around 2pm, I receive a call from the Carmel Police dept that my car was slightly touching the sidewalk and if I didn't move it immediately it would be towed, so I had to rush back and move it. The moral of this was if the Fireplace Inn office was open I could of gave them my car info, license number etc and they could of called me instead of me rushing back to avoid my car getting my towed. 3. The fridge and coffee maker are located in the bathroom. The coffee maker and cups are uncovered. This is disgusting because as you know bathrooms have sometimes fecal matter that flies in the air and other germs. Another gross 4. There is NO security there. When I went to bed, some of my noisy upstair neighbors were partying till like 1am and very loud. No one to call, should I have called the police? I don't know. 5. The bed are supposed to be queens. I have a queen at home which is way bigger. These are slightly larger than a standard bed. Very uncomfortable. 6. This place has no air conditioning, it has a VERY small heater on the wall which looks like from the 60's, a hard pass. 7. The fireplace is super old. Yes it is gas but you have to light it with a match not modernized at all. 8. The room is very dated looking and it needs new look. 9. I bought this on Affirm, which allows you to make payments. When I get there the desk lady said they don't take virtual credit cards, I had to cancel my affirm order and pay with my regular credit. A huge joke. This place runs like its the 80's This place is a 1 star from me. The ONLY plus I would give it would be it is close walking distance to downtown. We've stayed here before so we are familiar with the motel. It is long in the tooth, but comfortable and convenient. This visit was VERY disappointing. First, there was no hot water to take a shower in the morning and no one in the office until 10 AM to help. When I asked about it that afternoon I was told I can't get hot water when the ice machine is running and that happens randomly. Great to know. We didn't get a good night's sleep because someone had their TV on too loud at 2 AM and again at 6 AM. Tried to call the office, but no one there until 10 AM. Finally, they only have 7 parking spaces for a lot more rooms so unless you are lucky enough to grab one you risk a ticket on the street from the voracious meter maids. We come to Carmel frequently, but we're going to try somewhere different next time. read more

There's always a first-time for everyone and this was my first time in beautiful Carmel and also my first time staying in a Bed & Breakfast. I had no idea a B&B can be so home-like and nice. The unit we had was like a spacious 2 bedroom / 2 bath apartment. It was very clean, had nice wooden window treatments, 2 televisions, a fireplace, and a nice view of the courtyard. In addition, this B&B is located in downtown Carmel, which is most convenient (via walking) to the local stores, galleries, restaurants and, of course, the beach. The only complaint, if I should call it that, is that this B&B still uses VHS tapes. I was shocked to see a VCR in our room but at least the movies are free, and they must be checked out from the front desk. To be honest, when you're in Carmel you really don't want to spend time in your room watching a movie because it's too nice outside. Another high note of this B&B is that they offer a very nice breakfast for free, and the staff here is very helpful and nice. So, if you want to stay in the heart of downtown Carmel, at a reasonable price, I suggest Carmel Fireplace Inn. I'll definitely keep this place in mind for my next trip to Carmel. read more

I've stayed at the Fireplace Inn going back over 30 years. Our last visit was a few months ago when my husband and I enjoyed a quiet weekend here. I agree with the other reviewers, it's a great location, parking is an issue as it always is in downtown, and some rooms need updating, but they're slowly getting around to it, room by room. Most of the staff is very helpful however, there is one short tempered woman that answers the phone. If you get her, hang up and call back later. Also, don't buy a gift certificate or make reservations as a gift for anyone here, if they have to change the date it's a HUGE hassle and they'll charge a fee to the givers card. The best thing going for this place is location. I know there a lots of places in downtown Carmel and this little spot is very convenient. read more

3.8, solid Think Melrose place (condensed and smaller) meets English cottage in this decent value close-in B&B that I patronized recently... chose the Lincoln room (only shared walls on one side, as it's at the end of the unit, and one above). Luckily, there was neither on the Thurs. that I checked in, so tranquility, calm, and the nice patio table in the courtyard by the fountain were alllLLL mine! (mu haha!) Nothing terribly fancy to speak of---there was a gas fireplace, comfortable enough bed (but would have preferred mattress firmer), smallish bathroom (clean but dated) with yucky assortment of soap/shampoo (uh, i always take that stuff home, and this time, I just left it), and very wan lighting inside. A small dorm-sized fridge in the closet. I enjoyed the location to the shops/restaurants, and the breakfast in the morning was served in its own room near front desk. Def very decent---nothing hot, save Costco-type toasted bagels and cream cheese, but no Otis Spunkmeyer stuff wrapped in plastic either.... loaf cakes, muffins, fresh fruit, fresh juices, coffee good, and the service is wonderful. I would come to stay again....just temper thy expectations, as it's more country charm than pristine, refined B&B life. Parking lot is tiny---holds 5-6 cars. First come, first served.
