i had the pleasure of volunteering at the country animal haven for a few weeks while being bored…read moreand unemployed in madison this winter. this place is an amazing no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. they provide a safe place for cats that are still waiting to find the perfect home. run completely by volunteers, this place is very well-kept, clean and organized. the cats have pretty much free run of the house and barn -- and only a few are kept in cages (the young kittens and the sick/ill-tempered). it is nice to see so many cats in one place with the freedom to roam as they please. also, i was amazed to see cats that got along so well with each other. the location is a bit off the beaten path, but it's well worth the visit. there are plenty of cats waiting to be adopted. also, i believe some of them are brought to petsmart and mounds to be showcased for adoption. in addition, if you have free time, lend a hand. volunteers are always appreciated! :)

These are volunteers who make it their mission to care for these animals. We try to get in a few times a year to help out. I should also say that we have received one cat from them who was in perfect health. And we had to surrender another cat that we found abandoned. Thank you for the work that you do!

They were able to get us in quickly and I could not believe the price point! I made note that if any of our kitties need vet care in the future, that we'd take them here. Fast forward to 2020. We had an amazing kitty who was showing signs of a bladder infection. We took him to Lakeland where they took such great care of him. We tried antibiotics, but ultimately he needed surgery. They were so helpful with giving us recommendations for other locations that may be a good fit for us financially for his surgery, as well as recommendations an emergency vet. He had so many complications, and this was over 6 months, but through it all, Lakeland was so helpful and acted as friends to him, rather than seeing him as just another patient that's bringing in money. I appreciate that so much.

He walked thru the training technique and schedule, being sure to answer any questions or concerns we had. We scheduled three, full day trainings - spread over 3 weeks so that we would have practice time in between each lesson. We would drop Tilly off in the AM, pick her up in the afternoon. When we arrived back at the facility, my husband and I had an hour with the trainer and Tilly to walk through what they went over in the day. We also got a "Report Card" after each lesson that highlighted how it went. Super helpful. Brenna trained Tilly on the 1st and 3rd day and Jada trained Tilly on the 2nd day. Each were fantastic and couldn't have been more helpful and knowledgeable. They walked through the training collar process, commands and walking habits. They helped Tilly go from pulling on her harness to complete loose leash walking, how to get into her "Place", how to heal, and how to stay focused while around other distractions (dogs, cars, people, etc). Facilities were clean, well managed. Highly recommend Sit Means Sit, Brenna, Jada and Greg!

In fact, another trainer we contacted declined to work with her because of her breed mix. Tyrese, however, welcomed the challenge with confidence, patience, and skill. For one month, three days a week, Tyrese worked with our dog, Margot, and completely transformed her behavior. She is still the smart, independent thinker we love, but she now reliably comes when called (sometimes with side-eye, lol) and stays on command--something we weren't sure would ever be possible. The progress she made is remarkable and her spirit is intact. What impressed us most was Tyrese's training style. He is incredibly kind and gentle with our dog, and she was never fearful or stressed during training. At the same time, he maintains complete control and earns her respect through consistency and clear communication. It is obvious that he truly understands dogs and how to bring out their best. Tyrese also invests heavily in training the owners. He visited our home initially to observe her behavior and provided many instructional videos, of his work with Margot, for us. At pick up time, Tyrese also spends one-on-one time reinforcing the skills we need to continue our dog's success, His commitment to both Margot and the family makes all the difference. I believe they charge $200 per cat, which is a fair price. This store is owned by Mary and Joe who bought the place when it moved from the former location. The usual inventory of pet supplies and aquarium fish. Sure you might get a part time person who isn't very knowledgeable once in awhile but generally well trained staff who love animals. Don't believe those earlier posts about cleanliness and poor hamsters up for adoption. That's not the way it is here. Go see for yourself and clear your head playing with some kittens!

(I've been to humane societies that make a whole procession of picking up your new dog.) But after calling for a nail trim (last time done by a groomer there), we were charged $39.80! This is a small town in WI with a not very wealthy population. I called another vet and was told they'd charge $15. I'm done with this place. I just had our pets records switched to our new vet. If you want to overpay, give them a try. But personally--I'd rather pay a fair fee and donate the rest to a rescue or the humane society!
