I've read a ton of bad press on tire shops so on the advice of one of our new Anchorage friends,…read morethat we trust, we brought our new snow tires to L&M for installation. Other places had us calling them every day for an opening or waiting until the end of November. L&M got us in in three days. We arrived exactly at 3:00 on Tuesday as the snow is just starting. Whew! Maybe it should have been a warning sign when the tech walked back into the office (35 min into our appointment) and asked how he's supposed to work on a BMW when Honda keys are attached to the work order? That took you a half hour??? The super sweet Christine (who makes a killer cheesy potato soup) quickly found our work order and our 3:00pm job now has a 3:45 start. The car was finished in about an hour, as quoted. Plus, at twenty dollars per tire, it would appear a successful visit, thank you to my friend! Wait! Successful up until we were on the road again, approaching Tudor on "C" street. Wobble, wobble and off comes the left rear tire and lodges sideways under the axle. The freakin' tire came clean off! It's Tuesday, 5:00pm rush on our first seriously ice covered road this season. Now we're staring at the Bear Paw bear on the corner with only three functioning wheels on the ground. But thankfully, no one was hurt. Naturally, we called L&M who called a wrecker and carried us back to the shop. At L&M's expense. Having no loaner vehicles, they then sent us home in a cab. Again, on their dime. The following morning our car was first on the rack and all repairs were made. Once more, no charge. In fact, our initial $80 for tire service was refunded and L&M paid for our return cab ride. I spoke to Michael, the owner, and he confirms that they not only double checked/repaired the problem wheel, but they also rechecked the bonehead's (my term, not his) work on the other three. Tragic in some eyes, irresponsible in the eyes of others, inconvenient in mine. Mistakes are made in this world. I get that. This is one area they are not excusable. Burn my steak and you can always make another and we're all good. A serious accident happens due to neglect on my car, that could've have been a catastrophe. One maybe you don't recover from. To sum up. A huge unacceptable mistake was made. But this group bent over backwards to accommodate. They sent the cavalry to rescue us, secured our safe transport home and back then double checked all the work done to the vehicle. They waived all charges and paid all expenses. Equally as important to me is each of them offered a sincere apology even though only one person botched the job. I normally give local businesses a few chances before totally cutting ties. In my book this is a stand up organization that will get my future business and deserves four stars. 10/22

They charged me $32 a quart for the oil and $54 in labor. The last time I got my oil changed it cost me $170, so I feel like I'm being price gouged. Since the prior owner sold the business, things have gone way downhill there. Take my advice and never bring your vehicle to this place. They don't deserve your business.

I always trust that they'll do what I want. While keeping an eye out for other impending issues. I always opt for as much preventative as I can. I want to give a huge shout-out to Bonnie at Big O Auto Repair…read more She took the time to clearly explain how these warranties actually work--something I wish had been done when I purchased my truck from Dodge Chrysler Jeep on 5th Avenue. Unfortunately, the warranty I was sold there can only be used through their service department, and dealing with them has been an absolute nightmare for even minor repairs. Bonnie stepped in and walked me through everything with patience and professionalism. Because of her, I'm now in the process of canceling that warranty and switching to one that allows me to use Big O exclusively. That peace of mind means everything to me. I've trusted shops like Big O Auto Repair before--my last truck lasted 20 years because I had honest, reliable mechanics who did the job right the first time, never cut corners, and stood behind their work. That kind of trust is hard to find. The team at Big O is exactly that--honest, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to taking care of both you and your vehicle. I have full confidence that with their help, my current truck will go just as far. If you're looking for a place you can trust with your vehicle, this is it.

I stopped in to ask what needed to be done. Was it an oil change was it a tuneup. They acted like I stole the car. Intimated to me that it was against the law for them to tell me the information I was seeking ...told me it was HIPAA related type thing. I'm literally standing there with the car.. same license plate ...same VIN... gave them all the information they needed to look in the system. She begins to try to give me generalized service intervals. I wouldn't recommend them... if they're not enough of a service to be forthcoming to recognize a vehicle that they've worked on with the work history. If they try to bullshit you about why...they will bullshit about worked needed. I wanted to keep the car there at that shop, but given the attitude of the woman that I was dealing with and given the reluctance to even entertain trying to at least give me the basic. "It's an oil change". I couldn't trust them, and I won't trust them and you should not either. I took this car to Audi and I got all the history on this car from that dealership. All I had to do is show proof of ownership. JT Auto never asked to see that.

If you have a Volvo, Tarn and his team at Independent Auto are going to become your good friends…read more Why? Because Volvos, while nice, are one of the most unreliable brands of car you can buy. They are consistently in the bottom quarter for reliability whether you're looking at JD Power or Consumer reports. If you're a Volvo owner that doesn't believe me, either A) you got lucky or B) you value anecdotes over data. Here is the 2022 Consumer Reports Auto Reliability Report rankings of major automotive brands: 1. Lexus 2. Mazda 3. Toyota 4. Infiniti 5. Buick 6. Honda 7. Subaru 8. Acura 9. Nissan 10. Mini 11. I was "subscribed" to a Volvo for 2 years and, fell in love. At the end of the subscription, all my payments counted towards the principle and...it just felt stupid to NOT buy it. Now, Volvo is steadily making its money back through maintenance and part costs. This is a 2019 car (XC40) and, already, the driver's side seat heater stopped working. Tarn and his team looked into it, ordered another heating coil and...it still wasn't working. They said I would have to go to the Volvo dealership. You could tell that he said this with sadness in his voice. I have an appointment at Volvo for October 17th, they are charging me $200+ just to DIAGNOSE the seat heater issue. My previous car, a 2006 Acura TL, had 170,000 miles on it over 11 years and never had an issue with any of its seat heaters. Tarn was able to help with my 60,000 mile brake job. The brakes were grinding and his team replaced them for an eye-watering $1,570. After doing lots of research...that seems to be the going rate, not a hideous mark-up. Insane. It took a while for Independent to get the parts. I left my car with them while I was in Fairbanks for work for a week and came back and...they still didn't have the parts. They were kind throughout the whole process and explained to me the issues. And, when they finally attempted the seat heater (that they ultimately couldn't fix, sadly.) they gave me a Volvo loaner car to use, and they didn't charge me to diagnose the issue...as the dealership already has committed to.
