I heard some unusual sound emanating from from right rear wheel of my Mini Cooper and went to Autowerks. Ive been there once before and I was pretty pleased with my experience. Jason patiently heard my complaint with rapt attention. After NAD (nothing abnormal detected) pronouncement he volunteered to test drive the car for settling the issue. Fifteen minutes later he was back back with previous diagnosis intact. "You have a mind set not rooted in reality". Automobile folks being metaphysical in their analysis is a rarity and hilarity. Further mention of rear number plate bottom screws missing was attended to immediately. Casual mention of car body needing a shower/shampoo was countered with "Can you wait for fifteen minutes". We spent the time in inspecting the innards of Audies, Hondas, Minis, in different stages of Stripping and overhaul. Professionalism was the unwritten credo all over the place. Sooner than expected our scrubbed Mini materialized. On enquiring about the billing a very gentle rebuff was administered."please come back with real problems next time" We silently promised ourselves that we shall never go elsewhere. They really care about building relationships and ensuring safety for their customers. This is a new high in terms of service for me. read more

These guys ROCK! I just moved to the city from Colorado and had to get my car through the dreaded smog check. Failed the first attempt. Fellow VW owners feel my check engine light pain!? It passed emissions but had a bunch of computer errors, so the light would not go off! After one bad experience with another shop, I found Advanced Autowerks on Yelp. Took my car in, had some work done, the light came back on - took it back in and explained to the shop owner (I think..?), Randy, my situation and that i was afraid of going upside down on my car value since it's an older model and I'd already sunk a ton of money in it just to get it out here. Not only did he locate the final problem and resolve it for reasonable money, but he took it to smog check for me and saved me the final headache!!! Thank you Randy!! What a great experience on this dreary, rainy day. Of all days, noticed my headlight was out. I called these guys because I had been there once before, and had amazing service. On that day, my airbag light had popped on and stayed. I called 3 other shops, ranging in price from 120 - 150 bucks, just to CHECK to see what was up. I called Adv Autowerks, and they said, price to check that....nothing. Huh, nothing what? Nothing price, bring 'er on in and will see what's going on. I drove over and as promised, they were able to figure out why the light was on in about 3 minutes. Gratis. AND the guy who helped me noticed my squeaky doors and took care of that. Just another one of those things I'd been meaning to do. Awesome free-ness! So today, I drove over with my headlight out. Dana immediately came over, checked out ole "White Trash" as I affectionately call my white golf, and had a new bulb and the headlight glowing in a matter of minutes. Price, yup, you guessed it. NOTHING!!!! Beyond the fricking awesome free thing, these guys just all seem so darn nice! Take your vw, audi, mini here! I got so hosed the last place I took my car. $250 bucks and a day later, all they did was change the oil...they said the other things would require bucket loads more dinero just to try (again) to figure out what was going on. read more

Me likey. My passat was acting funny after being in the cold for a few days and not driven. When I cranked my car it shook and the engine malfunction light came on. Anyway, I took the car to Advanced this morning and they were nice enough to provide a diagnostic test at no charge. My car ran fine, but the light was still on and I explained this to them. They said the car should be fine, they cleared the mis-signals and said if it comes back on to bring it in and they will take a more detailed look at it. I know if I had brought the car to the VW dealer, I would have had to leave it all day, not wait the 10 minutes that I did at Advanced and pay a couple hundred bucks. SO, when I need my 80K service, guess where I'm going?!?!! read more

Very helpful and will use them from now on. The reviews on Yelp are definitely spot on. I spoke to Randy prior to setting up an appointment and he suggsted faxing over my last few statements to make sure he wasn't going to repeat any work and thus overcharge me. That was definitely a new experience for me, and it was very much appreciated. Service took less than one day and there was no wait to get a fast appointment. I even like the old school VW van they take you to work in. It reminded me of my high school days. When I picked up my car Randy told me about shortcuts that the previous mechanic had made (will not mention any names). He wasn't being critical, but just wanted to make sure I was informed. It's pretty rare for a car repair shop to deserve 5 stars, but Advanced is a rare treat. They've competently diagnosed my Audi's ailments and charged me considerably less than the dealership estimate. Aaron is very honest and upfront about what work needs to be done now and what work can wait until later. The big bonus is that even though they're pretty far from most places in SF you'd like to be, they'll drop you off whereveer you need to go. Everything I'd expect from a repair shop, and more. I am so tired of bringing my VW to the dealership only to be told that in order to fix it, I basically need "one millyun dollerz" (pinky point). I needed a private shop and 51 virtually positive yelps for AAVS seemed promising. I dropped the car off this morning for a free estimate ($100 fee waived). Randy took down the specs and told me to come back this afternoon. Their free shuttle service dropped me off at 24th St. BART and I was told they'd pick me up again later. However, I knocked a star because later ended up being like an hour later than the agreed time. And let me tell you, 24th St. BART isn't on the list of my most favorite hang out spots in the city... Other than that, I felt that AAVS was the real deal. They fixed my misfiring spark plugs and faulty coil packs for much less than what the evil dealership quoted. I like that I was in and out of there, they did what needed to be done, nothing extra, no recommendations for add on services, no jibberish, no bs. And I didn't even have an appointment. And they have free WiFi! Great place, I highly recommend it. read more

So I am a bit of an VW Fan. I am on my 2nd VW car, and for a while I use to go to New Dimensions in Sunnyvale for my aftermarket needs. And they where very helpful and offered good service. After a while it seems they started to have issues and I was hearing that the quality had dropped over there so I was left to the dealers again. After getting fed up with dealer prices for basic services for my car I decided to check for an VW/Audi tuner shop can came across Advance Audi and made an appointment for the 20k on my 07 GTI. They had the lowest price from all the dealers in the bay area (trust me, i called all of them =\) and the fact they are in the city is a big plus for me as I live in the city. I needed to drop off my car and wait as I had no ride that day and needed to get some things done in the afternoon. So its great they have wifi in the lounge. And they gave my car ruffly on time and the tech was very nice and showing me the stuff on my car as they worked. But not everything is perfect. First was the difference in the quote I got over the phone for the 20k and what they told me in person. While they did honor the price I got over the phone, it was a bit disconcerting. I know its a common issue with other shops and a bit typical of the industry I think its worth loosing one star over it. Overall great shop that I will be bringing my VW and my families to them for other work in the future. read more

These guys did me right. I brought my 2005 Touareg into them based on reviews that I found on YELP. They are supposed to be the best in San Francisco. My VW needed a LOT of help but primarily, the Engine Computer was not reading the Transmission Computer and accordingly, it was in LIMP mode. I am a hobby mechanic but this was way over my head so I needed help. Brought the car into them expecting a Death Certificate from them and that's exactly what I got. The car had too many problems and was not worth fixing. I picked it up and took it home, hoping that I might be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat and fix it myself. Started to work on it but then realized that their diagnosis was not completely accurate. I then called Zach back up and discussed with him and he agreed to look at it again. Apparently, the mechanic that had originally looked it over was coming down with a flu and might have made a few mistakes. I dropped the car back off and they promised to not return it to me until they were 100% sure of the problem. They had it for a few days and went through the wiring harness pin by pin. Finally called me up and told me that they were able to figure it out and re-established communication with the Transmission Control Module. The car now drives the way it should drive. I still have some more problems that need to be fixed on it but in the meantime, they fixed what I asked them to fix. And it was NOT an easy task. I appreciate that they admitted to making a mistake and then made good on their promise to figure it out. I'll be taking the car back to them in the New Year and hopefully, will get the Touareg back to what it was 10 years ago. Or at least close enough!!! read more

I can't say enough about how great these guys are. They get five stars across the board: ***** Experienced ***** Knowledgeable ***** Professional ***** Reasonable ***** Nice I bought a used 1999 Audi A6 Quattro about two years ago and brought it in to Advanced for a post-sale check-up so I would know what, if anything, needed immediate attention and what I should plan on in terms of upcoming maintenance. The Advanced crew went over the car with a fine-tooth comb and owner Randy came back with an assurance of safety and structural integrity -- as well as a list of things to do soon, things that could wait a bit, and things that would be nice. I had planned on spending a couple hundred dollars for this service but Randy waved it off, saying "just come back to us when you're ready to get the work done." It's now two years later and I've been back to Advanced Audi three times to take care of my to-do list. My car has been running like a top in their capable hands -- and it hasn't broken my budget. My jetta is officially a piece of crap after getting hit by a bus last year. As I am a poor starving grad student and AC Transit has declined to pay me for their driver's idiocy, I am on a tight budget when it comes to car repairs. When the poor car needed new spark plug wires to pass smog, I called around to get quotes for the part. The guys at Advanced Audi & VW were friendly and helpful on the phone, gave me a cheaper price than I could find even on the internet, and set aside the part for me and had it waiting when I came to pick it up (unlike Karmakanix in Berkeley, where half the time I showed up and the part they said they had wasn't even there...) Best of all, they didn't bat an eyelash at me doing the work myself. They didn't try to convince me that they should do it, or ask to see my fingernails first (to make sure I wouldn't break a nail?? Karmakanix, I'm talking to you.), or talk to me like a three year old. I'm planning on going back to get a replacement for the broken part inside the driver's side door that makes my alarm go off every time I start the car, and would happily pay them to fix anything I couldn't do myself. Well, maybe I wouldn't be THAT happy about it. But I'd trust them. read more

I was clueless about why my beetle kept stopping, and with one phone call they advised it is probably the alternator, and although they are booked solid they could probably squeeze me in the next day. Ends up they did squeeze me in, and with a brand new alternator the beetle is running fine now. Jason even stayed 15 min late on a friday night after closing to wait for me and the taxi cab to arrive to collect said beetle. I tried to give them a tip for their excellent service, but they refused the tip, and then took $15 off the total bill to cover my taxi fare! Huge points for Jason on front desk, who is very friendly and cute to boot! I can't recommend these guys enough, I'll definitely be going back here soon to get my beetle serviced. read more

I found Advanced on Yelp a few years ago when Royal Motors gave me a quote for a repair on my Beetle that I just couldn't stomach. Advanced did the job (plus a bunch of other related work) for much less. Then, when I had another problem after that in the same general area of the engine they had worked on, they fixed it for free, because there was a chance that they had touched the area that was now broken. That showed me how honest Randy (the owner) was, and I never went back to Royal again. By 2010, my beloved Beetle had gotten quite old and needed a bunch of repairs. Randy felt bad that I was coming in so often that he started giving me breaks in price, though there was no reason he had to do so (it's not his fault I have an old car). Most recently, an old problem recurred -- the New Beetle sunroof has a design defect in its drainage system that sometimes leads to water getting inside the car. This has happened to my car a few times over the years, and it happened again this month. I brought it in to Advanced, fully expecting to have to shell out a couple hundred bucks for the fix. To my pleasant surprise, though, Advanced fixed it for free, saying that since they had fixed the problem for me before, they wouldn't charge me again this time. This made me realize, it's about time I write these guys a great Yelp review. Not only do they beat Royal Motors' prices, they are friendly and helpful and they give you breaks where Royal would just find another reason to squeeze more money out of you. Advanced embodies continuous improvement and it shows. I bought my A4 in 2004 and shortly thereafter I started to visit Advanced for my non-warranty work. This included adding an aftermarket exhaust, amongst other goodies. Back then it was a much smaller space run by Aaron and Randy, operating under a slightly different name. After my warranty expired, Advanced became the one-and-only place I could trust with my Audi. Over the years the business has grown and now it is better than ever. Their staff is extremely courteous. The work they do is exceptional. The additional touches they provide (bus fare, car washing, etc.) are an added bonus which wasn't always there. Best part of all - Advanced is extremely competitive with pricing. For what you would pay at the stealership, Advanced gives you so much more. My only disappointment is that I have parted ways with the makes of vehicles that Advanced specializes in. As a result, I expect to find myself poking my head in to say "Hello" and looking for a new equivalent in the BMW world. In short, a friendly, professional and honest shop with experienced VW mechanics. Here's how I ended up there: After my VW's warranty expired I decided to try an independent shop instead of the dealership service center. It was time for my 50,000 mile service and I had called the dealer to ask what exactly that service involved. I haven't had problems with the dealer before but they *are* expensive. The VW dealer's service rep read off a list of things for the 50K service which, frankly, sounded *exactly* like what they normally do for an oil change (including free brake inspections and other visual checks) plus a tire rotation. The price? About $256. When I asked how that was different from their oil change ($90 with the usual visual checks, another $30 for the rotation), the dealer couldn't give a very specific or satisfactory answer. So I called Advanced Autowerks after being recommended by my previous mechanic at Action Auto Care (who, sadly, doesn't work on VWs). Advanced Autowerks' price for an oil change plus the usual inspections for the 50K service (no rotation needed this time): about $120. That's less than half of what the dealer would have charged for the same thing. AA was able to tell me exactly what was going to be done, did the job quickly, I was able to schedule an appointment for the time I wanted, and, like the dealer, they threw in a free car wash. They also tested my brake fluid (it was fine and they didn't pressure me to change it just because). They patiently answered my many questions about my car and the next service I would need, and I never had the feeling they were trying to sell me a service I didn't need. They were friendly, personable and professional at all times. If you're looking for an honest and experienced team to care for your VW, at a lower price than the dealer, give Advanced Autowerks a try. read more

As far as I'm concerned, there's only one place in San Francisco to fix your VW or Audi. Lemme give you some back story... so I love my VW, but every year I've had to shell out around $500 to $1500 for something, wheel bearings, tie rods, rack and pinions (twice in one year actually, the second time it was still under warranty). I've been kind of shell-shocked to take my car to a mechanic, and I'm even hesitant to drive my 2000 Jetta at this point... not anymore. Immediately when you walk in, you feel something that is lacking from so many other establishments... Trust. Sure, it's not in the best section of town, but it is walkable to CalTrain and their shuttle is super-helpful. When I got my car repaired today, I told Randy that I was cool just walking when I got off CalTrain. As I was getting on CalTrain, the shuttle driver called me just in case I needed a ride so I took him up on it. Taking my car to Advanced has finally made it fun to drive again. read more

Took 2004 VW Jetta 1.8T wagon in last week for 40k service ($530). Work is excellent, service is outstanding and I simply do not have the right words to do this place justice. THANK YOU YELP ! Almost took our baby into dealership, such a bad experience last time but didn't want to go to Mark Morris for such a big service. Advanced fixed our outlet, told us to stop using after market cell phone chargers, we hear you ! We'll be upgrading to an Audi or getting another VW and have yet to find a really good service place - well, this is the holy grail. It's off the beaten path just a bit but well worth the trip. Shuttle service was offered but we've been trained by other less service oriented places to arrange our own ride so I can't review it. I LOVE Advanced Audi Volkswagen Service! Randy and his team of mechanics are like SURGEONS and they treat my 1999 Volkswagen Beetle like a real baby! I have been their customer for over a year and they consistently: * charge VERY reasonable prices. One time I went to the Volkswagen dealership in Redwood City to mount my license plate and bracket onto the front of my Beetle. The guy tried to charge me $150! I said "no way jose" and went to Advanced Audi - - they did it for $30!! I was so impressed with Advanced, I joined Yelp to write this review. Bought and 03 A4 about six months ago. It's still under warranty, but knowing what I know about Audi dealers, I would never let a dealership touch my car. Took it into Advanced for an oil change, some minor adjustments and a general check. I have to agree with the other reviews -- fair, honest, fast, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The serviced the vehicle promptly and gave me a fair and honest assessment of the car. No repairs necessary. They could have hosed me on any litany of standard Audi problems, and 03 A4's are rife with them. Even though my car is still under warranty (and my power-train has a 100,000 mile warranty), I will go here instead of the dealership. Stay away from dealers, especially Royal -- that's a story for another post. read more

I have a moody 1997 VW Jetta GT, original owner and I want to drive it till the wheels fall off, so luckily I came across a shop that sees it the same way! I had a string of things go wrong with it, major oil leaks and power steering hose got too old and leaky, etc and they were always reliable in getting the problems identified & communicated to me so I knew what I was in for and fixed in a timely manner. When I had the oil leak it really had gummed up underneath the car making it hard to identify if there were other issues going on. They cleaned it all up, fixed the obvious issues and said come back in 2 weeks and we'll take a look again to make sure there isn't anything else that needs to be worked on. Originally they had suspected a few other things may be needing repair but it turned out it was all from the oil leak and my list of 5 potential repair items went down to 2 and those they said I could wait on, not critical issues but just the sign of an old car, and take care of later if I needed to. I love the service - the guys here are always friendly and super helpful with all the questions I have and don't roll their eyes at me when I ask for a prioritized list of what I should work on first and what I can put off (without harming the car of course). read more

I thought I needed a much more expensive service - but after they looked into my car's specs they told me I could wait and just do the 80k tune up. Took my girlfriend's Jetta in to Advanced after the local VW-Audi dealer told her that her front brakes & rotors needed to be replaced for $700...which sounded like robbery to me. I spoke to Brett at Advanced and he quoted me considerably less, which I thought was great and was ready to proceed. I dropped off the car today and Randy called me in the afternoon to let me know that the front brakes still had ~40% of their life, and he went the extra step and also confirmed that the rear brakes had ~70%. What the F*@#! was the dealer thinking? Advanced will definitely be seeing this Jetta and my Audi from now on. I previously took my car to Royal Motors and received an estimate for almost $600. Royal Motors couldn't fix it and had me wait 2 weeks to order the part from overseas. In the meantime, I called Advanced Audi and schedule an appointment the next day. They fixed the problem in one day day for less than $250 and it turns out that none of the parts Royal Motors claimed needed replacing actually did. These guys are a class act and know what they're doing. From now on, I'm going to Advanced Audi for any future car repairs. With so many import car garages ripping people off, its nice to finally find a garage I can actually trust!! read more

What can I say, not since Batman & Robin has there been a more dynamic duo than Aaron & Randy. I mean these guys need capes or light sabers, or something that makes a "pop" or "bang" sound. I have been taking my car here for almost three years now and these guys shred the service and pricing of Royal Motors. It's not even close. They do as they say there are going to do and fix what needs to be fixed. No "extra" charges. No "hidden" costs. No "Do you mind if we keep your car an extra couple of days." No "We thought it was going to be $500 but it looks like it may be closer to $2500." No, "The flex capacitor is not under warranty." No, "Do these jeans make my ass look big." Oh wait, that was another review. Anyways, you get the idea. Just fast, friendly service and a good sense of humor in addition. Plus free drop-off and pick-up service. Both Zach and Mackenzie rock! Zach answered my countless questions about buying an Audi A3 TDI. Super helpful dude. So I decide to go for it. Beepi dropped off my new/used car and Zach didn't have a spot for me because I gave them a short notice (huh, a day notice - totally my bad) and he squeezed me in for a pre-purchase inspection. Half the price of Royal motors inspection and Royal didn't even call me back. Mackenzie was also super helpful with the scheduling too. These folks are busy for a reason. The first thing I hear as I walk up to the front desk is Randy on the phone: "No. No, we're going to do a ton of unnecessary work and extort you mercilessly." I knew that I'd found the right place for me. Owners Randy and Aaron are exceptionally forthright and professional, taking the time to patiently explain everything that they are going to be working on while adding a bit of levity to the whole process. My car has never run better. They always get it back to me faster than I expect it. They give me multiple phone calls updating me on their progress (much appreciated). Aaron once spotted me a small interior part that he had forgotten to install so that I didn't have to come back into the office to re-run my credit card.
