I've always seemed to find the straight-forward, best-priced mechanics for my VW's or Audi's whether I was in Maine, Colorado or Florida and these are the guys here in California. I had a '96 A4 (150k miles) which they helped me keep in tip-tip condition till I sold it a week ago......and the mechanic, at this other garage that was checking it out for my buyer, said that it was in excellent running condition. My A4 is gone due to long distance driving, fuel prices and gas mileage, but Aaron and Randy steered me in the right direction again and I bought an '04 VW Jetta TDI and had them check it out first. 40+ mpg and loving it. When my wife was looking for a car, she wanted a Subaru, but ended up not liking the ride of the Outbacks and Forresters, so I told her to test drive an Audi for herself and she fell in love with a '01 A6 Avant. We sold her old Isuzu Rodeo and now this awesome All Wheel Drive Audi gets us safely back and forth to Tahoe many weekends in the winter. I will always buy a VW or Audi in order to keep bringing my business to these guys. You won't regret it. read more

They fixed the mystery problem with my car and were helpful, accommodating and friendly -- alllll qualities I look for when dropping half a mortgage payment on something that I'd rather not need. Bonus: One of the mechanics looks like Pacey from Dawson's Creek. But, like, hot. And for the record, I wasn't a Pacey fan (or a Dawson fan, for that matter), but there's something about Pacey + mechanic that = YES PLEASE. But blah blah blah...enough with the objectifying of men. This is a serious review, I swear. Five stars for giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling about driving my car for another six years. Minus one star for the patchouli incense they have going on in the waiting area. Seriously you guys...if I wanted my hair to smell like hippies I'd spend more time in the Haight. Plus one star for being so damn nice and explaining everything for me eighty seven times. ***UPDATE*** Shortly after posting my review, we've received a call from Advanced Autowerks. (We had some trouble with our voice mail system and only got their message a short while ago hence the late update to my review.) They apologized for the miscommunication and offered us a make good. They told us they wanted to keep us as clients and were willing to work something out. I think Randi's immediate response speaks for EXCELLENT client service. Meanwhile, we had a good experience with another shop (and found out that shops are open to negotiating their service fees) but I don't think any other shop offers a shuttle service after you dropped off your car?! Long story short: Our car and Advanced Autowerks are back together! **** Very disappointed with their last 'service'. We've been taking our Audi A4 Avant to Advanced Autowerks since we bought it over two years ago. All good so far - although we never bothered to compare prices for their services. This time, my husband and I were debating to fix the A/C in our car. They quoted us approx $800. Which was a lot for us considering that you hardly need A/C in S.F.. We agreed to do it anyways. The final invoice turned out to be $1,300! They 'forgot' to quote the labor. We'd never agreed to get a new A/C for that price and are bummed that there's nothing we can do besides taking our car to another shop where a quote includes ALL the costs involved to fix the car's problem. read more

These guys are Awesome! bye Royal motors!! I had a complimentary oil change from Royal Motors b/c of the crappy service they gave me. I chose not to use it, took my car to Advanced Autowerks and I'm never looking back. Royal motor told me my car was fine and they refused to perform a carbon clean. Although it was misfiring and felt extremely sluggish. I brought my car in Tuesday morning and got it back Wednesday morning. Tobi de-carbon my car, and performed a routine maintenance. He found a bunch of carbon build up took pics and also saved me a couple chunks! Super informative, friendly and professional guys. Zac was very pleasant, He took care of me from the get go. Starting from the phone conversation upto the face to face meeting. These guys really love what they do and it shows. It's very rare to come across other business that have this much integrity. If you have a VW or Audi GO TO ADVANCE - if you don't have a VW or Audi, go get one so you can go to ADVANCE! I've taken my '01 VW to Randy and Team 3-4 times and each time they've been friendly, professional, and completely awesome. The two times repairs were required, Randy spent time with me to explain the repairs and show me the old and new parts. One other time was a service and this last time I took my car in and they recommended AGAINST making a potentially unnecessary repair (that's right)! Rand helped me buy my fantastic used VW Golf, making sure that it was in good shape and was a smart purchase. And I've been servicing my car with Advanced ever since. Excellent service, utterly transparent and honest. They advise me on what repairs need to be made in order to stay safe, and what I can defer in order to avoiding bulk costs. This is not your typical mechanics. The shop itself has great art up and around, is neat and clean, with continuous improvements made each time I've been there. I thought I was lucky to win my car "Rosie" (Audi TT Roadster) at a fundraiser event a few years ago, but the maintenance cost that accompanies an Audi is another story for a school teacher's salary. But my luck continued when I was referred to AA through a fellow Audi driver, and I wouldn't go anywhere else from now on--much better deal than the dealership. The shop is meticulously organized and interlaced with humorous additives, including the friendly shop dog. But it's the guys behind it all that generate the atmosphere of trust. Rosie needed some (tons of) love, but I was reassured on the phone that the repairs were all normal wear-and-tear--nothing I had caused. I did not feel at all like they were playing games with me as a female driver (I do my own Audi research to make sure). The staff is fabulous and the repairs were done wonderfully. I even got a tour of my old car parts to show me just how bad they were. Car was returned sparkling too! I had a follow-up concern with my electronics after the work was done, but I was scheduled for surgery and couldn't bring the car back for a month. I was contacted immediately and it worked out that Randy was coming through my city soon on business and was able to stop by to check out my concern. This December marked 9 years that i have been taking my VW GTI to be serviced at Adavanced. Time says it all! I have complette confidece and trust with this shop. Over the years I have only positive things to say about eveyone that I have come in conatact with. All the folks that Randy has employed have been Polite, Knowdlegable, Trusting and Caring individuals. Most important and most comforting, they will not let me drive a car that is not safe. Be it brakes. tires. leaks, they make it clear what should be fixed and what may wait. These guys are one of the best mechanics around. I've been there twice to get work done on my 1997 Jetta VR6. Both times they've been quick, accurate, professional, and not too expensive. Second time was in Sept, 2007 to "check engine light" - they hooked up computer and found out Mass Airflow Sensor was bad. $360 MSRP for part, they charged me $300 + tax + $100 for one hour labor. Hurray. I forgot exactly what they did the first time i went - but i remember loving the free wifi while i waited and getting a free shuttle back home. read more

The owners Randy and Aaron are the best guys ever. They are honest, nice, friendly, reasonable, and knowledgeable. I told them about a weak start up with my car, and they immediately knew what the problem was and how to remedy it. They are open to giving an estimated cost upfront, but would check the potential problem out, to ensure that their solution was the right one, but because Randy's the one who usually picks up the phone, he just knows his stuff. They will never pressure you to getting the service done, but they will always warn you as to what will happen in the future. I trust these guys and they've always make sure to take good care of me and my car! I've saved so much money with these guys, since I stopped going to the dealer for my regular services and any problematic items. They have no attitudes and will have your car done within a few hours. They also have a free shuttle service within SF. Its perfect for drop off and pick ups and in my last visit with them, Aaron (one of the owners) was the shuttle driver! After bringing my Passat here for service, I will never, NEVER, take it to a VW dealership again. These guys get the job done and at a cost at least 35% less than Royal Motors wanted to charge me for an oil pan cover. There were a bunch of other things Royal was recommending be done and the guys at Advanced told me--"No Need". I trust these guys and they never pressure you to get unnecessary repairs. They also have a shuttle service to get you back and forth from their location. Muni is convenient also. read more

I've not written a ton of reviews of late on Yelp however I am going to give you the scoop on Advanced Autowerks. My car needed a pair of oxygen sensors installed and some other routine service done on it. The dealer cost estimates were a little off-putting which resulted in me letting a couple of little repairs pile up as well. Enter Toby, a technician at Advanced. I met him in a non-business setting and started to ask questions after he said he worked here. Cut to the chase, I bring my car in. The next day ALL the service was done for a whole lot less than the dealer was going to charge me. It was done right and now I get about 15% better gas mileage that before the work was done. Given the current price of fule I should have come here sooner. The shop is clean, everyone who works here is friendly. I've referred several of my friends who have also gone in for brakes, exhaust work and general "engine light comes on" stuff. They all report a similar experience - no hassle, quality work at affordable prices. Dealers make me cringe because I'm always afraid of getting taken to the cleaners. I don't worry about that here! Found these guys through Yelp, after my week of Royal Motors. Royal fought like crazy to make me pay for broken window regulators, even though it's a warranty repair. They also replaced my brake light switch - under recall. Classically, they screwed it up - EPC light on the way home. Called up Erin, he cleared up the warning light, refused to let me pay him, then said if it comes back on, take it back to Royal. Unfortunately, I've got to do that, but the side benefit? I've taken my Audi there about 3 times before. Top notch. So today I went in to get a rear taillight bulb replaced and to have them diagnose the "check engine" light. Within 5 minutes, the dude had changed my bulb, reset the "check engine" light and told me that I'd have to come back in if it came back on. Beauty! Oh, and I didn't pay a dime. My new favorite mechanic -- I've had pretty good luck from dealer service, but now that I've exhausted Audi Care and am paying out of pocket, I tried this independent shop, and am really impressed. I knew I needed brakes, and they did a brake replacement in a few hours. They also found a couple minor issues which were going to become major, and resolved them before I got stuck on the road somewhere. It's a fairly convenient location now that the T runs down third street; they'll even give you change for the trip (both ways) from a huge jar of dollar coins, or will take you to caltrain. I'll definitely be using this shop for all my Audi service needs in the future. read more

These guys are the Cadillac of Mini Cooper repair! I came in about two weeks ago because I kept having to refill the radiator (about 3 times a week) so I figured I'd take it to two shops, get an estimate, then go with whichever made sense. However, I got two wildly different estimates as each shop believed it to be two very different problems. So, I figured I needed a third estimate. I heard through a buddy that Advanced was doing Mini's now, so I took it there. They figured that the problem was a cracked water pump and even showed me why they thought that's what it was. He was so sure of it that he told me that, "If that's not the problem, then it's on me." I picked up my Mini the next day and I haven't refilled the radiator since! These guys obviously know their stuff and now have me as a customer forever. I plan to even do regular maintenance there. I love my Mini and it's great to have a spot I know I can rely on now. This is a high-quality repair shop with trustworthy personnel. I left my car (2009 vw rabbit) here to replace some air sensors that was causing my check engine light to go off. While the sensors were replaced correctly, the check engine light came back on just a few days later. It turned out that it had something to do with the manifold where more air was being allowed in than it should have that was making the sensor flag it. Replacing sensors is something that an average joe could do, but for them to reconfigure the the manifold in such a way tells me they possess a strong level of technical skill. What really earns them the 5 stars is that they, not only did they NOT charge me extra for the labor it took to discover this, but they showed pride in their work and their ability to satisfy customers. The one knock I might have on them is that they charge a bit more for labor than some other shops. But you get what you pay for. read more

I never thought I would be so happy for my 2014 Audi Q5 to come-off it's maintenance program with the dealership. Yes, I'm now paying for service but I it's so nice not dealing with the Audi dealerships. Zach and the rest of the team at Advanced Autowerks are so lovely. They have been super trustworthy and I never have to worry that more work is being done to my car then is truly needed. And they stand behind their work. I had some issues with the brakes after they were replaced at Advanced Autowerks and Zach took care of it without issue. Audi and VWs break - these guys fix em and unlike royal motors won't bullshit you and overcharge. They also will give you a ride, which royal will not. This shop has been nothing but excellent since I started going to it about 3-4 years ago. Advanced is a truly trustworthy shop, which is pure gold in my opinion. They'll charge you a reasonable price for quality parts and service, and won't tack on any extras that aren't necessary. My work has always been minor, but done flawlessly. Compare that to the dealer, who once gave me back my car with a nail in the tire...I'll take consistency over a 'complimentary' car wash any day. And they've saved me bunches of money when others might not have. When a part is still under warranty, they'll send me to the dealer to get the work done for free, even though they could have ignored that fact and just charged me for the work. They've even checked out my brakes when I got debris caught in it, verified all was OK, and handed me a $0.00 bill! Customer service is the best in the business -- they're friendly, and take the time to explain any issue in layman's terms without talking down to you or glossing over the details. They'll even educate you about your car and show you things you can do on your own to maintain it better! The shop is clean and they do a great job getting you to wherever you need to be while your car is in the shop. Did I mention they've always been on-time or ahead of schedule with getting back to me? I have been taking my car for about 4 years and Randy and the team always pull thru for me. About a month ago my car started smoking while in rush hour traffic on 101. I called advanced immediately and Randy picked up the call within the first few rings as they always do. After a quick check in he let me know he wouldn't feel safe with me trying to drive the car any further with fluids leaking out of it. He gave me a couple tow truck numbers to call and i got help within an hour or so. It was great having someone to trust on the other end of the line to reassure me that i shouldn't drive and to help me get a tow truck that i new wasn't going to charge me the maximum rate. I'm the sort of person that has always felt skeptical when having my car looked at, always "you need new brakes or you should probably do XYZ service" that I wonder is just up selling, but the girl who I dealt with at the front and on the phone is a straight shooter, legit opinions, trying to stop me from giving you money for something I would have gladly paid you to do because it isn't cost effective for the age/status of my aging A4 wagon? YAFSR. I have nothing but good things to say about these guys. I work in Palo Alto and live here in the City, so I've got quite a few choices for service on my 2004 A4. When trying to get an annoying noise diagnosed and fixed, a couple other Audi/VW mechanics couldn't even be arsed to get out of their chairs to take a listen--just commit a day to come in. When I went to Advanced, Randy promptly took my car on a testdrive, diagnosed the problem, and made me an appointment. The day of the fix was flawless, as well. Dropped the car off in the morning, used their free shuttle service to get home, and picked my car up late in the afternoon--they even stuck around for a bit when I ended up being late. Audi owner! This is the place to go to if you want anything to do to you car. They are honest and great people who wont overcharge and will diagnos your car for free and get you free washer fluid and coolant as well. yup! I got them all for FREE plus they told me my TT is in perfect condition, just need to do oil change every 3 months so that it will purr like a kitty cat all the time. Awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! and yeah, pleaseeeeee dont go to Royal (audi dealership) for service under any circumstances. they gonna screw you up for real. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! they screwed me up last time. told me gonna put washer fluid but they didnt. told me they could replace my rear light if I just come in, but they couldnt and actually had to make appt to replace my rear light bulb. its just a bulb. whats so hard about changing that? they got all the tools and techniques and all. they should be able to do that in like 10 sec with eyes wide shut.! grrrrrrrrrrrr royally incompetent ! read more

Complimentary shuttle service to and from work, friendly and expert service (they didn't even charge me when they checked out my problematic catalytic converter), and CUPCAKES! They even made an appointment with the VW dealer because the catalytic converter warranty was extended so I didn't get charged for that either. I was very impressed with the high level of customer service, honesty and generosity exhibited by Advanced Audi & Volkswagen. I have already referred a friend to use them. read more

I had to take in my A4 for a regularly scheduled maintenance and called these guys to get a quote. The price was well under what I was getting from other service companies, so based on the Yelp ratings, I decided it was a no-brainer. Upon dropping the car off, it turns out we had a miscommunication over which service was required, so the quote wasn't quite right and the real price was a few hundred dollars higher. The actual price was still competitive to what I was seeing from other shops, but regardless, they honored the initial quote and took the hit. Friendly, knowledgable, dedicated. I took my ailing 2006 GLI here, after it breached the 80K mile mark, blew a gasket in the turbocharger, AND got a flat tire (yeah, that was an eventful trip). I wouldn't have expected a 36-hour turnaround for this kind of work, but still got it. Less than that, even. More like 30 hours after dropping her off. Even though it was a pricey fix, I never felt like these guys were pushing anything unnecessary on me. They nearly insisted on paying for cab or MUNI fare, even though this place was close enough for me to walk. Seriously? You have a european car and you aren't going here?
