1. Extremely expensive Expect to PAY EVERYTHING UPFRONT even if you're IN NETWORK and chase them for the insurance reimbursement check afterwards. Also 3% TRANSACTION FEE if you were to use a debit/credit card. Oral surgeon is out-of-network for Delta PPO even though it's in-network for this dental office, they didn't inform me (I thought I was still in-network). 3D CT scan cost $250 for me after insurance when Chatham Square Dental charged nothing after insurance. Surgical extraction of would have cost me over $2k after insurance here but only cost $127 at Chatham Square Dental. So glad I did my research and went to Chatham Square Dental to get my extraction done. Not a complicated procedure but would have cost a lot more here. So, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Also, their oral surgeon only comes once a month or on short notice if she happens to be in the neighborhood -- so you'd be paying for literally nothing better. 2. Long wait even if you called ahead of time/ have an appointment First time for CT scan, I had to wait nearly an hour even after making an appointment. Second time to pick up insurance check and I had to wait for over 30min even though I called ahead time to make sure I wouldn't have to wait. Just incapable and inconsiderate staff. Michelle (one of the receptionists) seems nice and tries to help but the young man is not helpful at all. He literally said to me on the phone "what do you expect me to do right now" when I called to check if the check can be ready when I come to pick it up... 3. Rude receptionist (esp. the young man) I was frustrated waiting and waiting for my check so I went up to check with them. They became defensive and gave me some excuse that the deposit just came in so they needed time to sort things through. Again, that's why I called ahead of time. I don't think they respected my time. I just expected them to provide way better service for how much they charge. My recommendation: DO YOUR RESEARCH before you go. Kyla was super communicative and called me every few days leading up to the appointment letting me know what to expect. Dr. DeMatteis also helped me get comfortable right before the surgery, answered all my questions, and even called me the next day (over the weekend) to see how I was doing. I also want to give FIVE STARS to the brilliant Endodontist, Dr. Elbert Kim. He performed a Root Canal procedure on me and I almost fell asleep during the procedure. This is to tell you how incredibly comfortable I was. And I must tell you, I was petrified of going to the dentist for many years because of a traumatic experience I had. This is the type of establishment that has to lie in order to lure patients into the office, and then tries to bully them into getting unnecessary procedures so they can bill as much as possible. I tried to book a cleaning at this place and asked about their cleaning equipment since I have very sensitive teeth. They lied about having top of the line equipment, and then tried to bully me into having all these unnecessary procedures BEFORE I ever even got a chance to see the dentist. It was bad vibes all around and I ended up walking out. Save yoursevles, don't even make an appointment here. My experience was pitiful. Front desk administration, including coordination of dental insurance claims, scheduling, patient communication as well as any expression of empathy or warmth by professional or admin staff) was completely lacking. I see many better reviews of this dental practice which totally leaves me scratching my head how my experience could have been so completely the opposite. Maybe others don't care if they have to wait outside the office building at 8:45 (with a 9 am appt ) waiting for staff to arrive in order to go inside in inclement weather. Or when they finally do arrive, they shut the door in your face, only to apologize an hour later claiming that they had to run in so the alarm wouldn't go off. Btw, happened each and every time. So, if you make a 9 am appt, expect to wait outside if you arrive even a minute early. read more

I've been going to this dentist office for 2 years and have always been happy with the service. Staff is very welcoming and the office is organized. A few months ago I went to get 2 wisdom teeth removed. I found it odd that they asked me to pay for the entire procedure upfront -$2300, but I was told insurance would reimburse me. ***I was never told that I was paying for an out of network doctor! I've been going to the office for 2 years and they are in network so I would imagine that any procedure done in the office would also be in network. Not the case. When it came time to be reimbursed insurance only sent me $500 and told me that they were billed for in network services and they were surprised that I payed upfront. Long story short, I've been fighting to get reimbursed, had to file a claim through my credit card company and through my insurance. I was asked to pay for out of network services without my knowledge and then the office sent the procedure as an in network service and kept all my money. I would've only paid about $550 out of pocket, instead I am out $1100. Just a very sad situation since I actually enjoyed this dentist office and their staff, as well as, the doctor who did my procedure. Unfortunately, I will not be returning since it seems to me that I was misled and all they wanted was my money. I was told that insurance will cover the balance of the procedure and they did not. read more

They are all so lovely and whipped me back up into shape so quickly after a crown from dental work 3 years ago (from another practice) fell out. Love this dental office on East 9th Street in NYC. I've been to other dentists who caused pain (one suggested doing a root canal from OUTSIDE my cheek.) Dr. Gaspari is absolutely wonderful. He explains everything. He continually stops to make sure I am okay (and I always am because his work is painless.) Tatyna is wonderful and the whole office is so warm and friendly, I actually love coming in just to see them and shoot the breeze. And importantly, they do not play that terrible Muzak, but they have great rock and roll. Everything is so easy, plus they have a payment plan. read more

Update 3: They haven't responded to my billing question back in June about being billed $900 for a checkup appointment (no fillings, only X-ray and cleaning) where I have to pay $100 out of pocket, which doesn't make sense because my Delta Dental PPO insurance covers them 100%. Instead of answering my question by explaining the bill, they sent me a reminder email with a non-itemized bill attached (just says "Balance forward" now) asking me to email back if I have any questions. TL;DR My wife and I went here for a year. The actual dentistry is fine, but the practice is disorganized. There are like a dozen dentists, and I think the staff struggles to deal with anything out of the ordinary and can be grumpy and defensive. Here's an email I sent to the practice that no one responded to. I am writing to give you feedback about my wife's recent experience. Wife had a crown put in today, at 2:00 PM. Originally, this was supposed to happen 1 week ago, last Monday. But it was delayed and she repeatedly had to reschedule the appointment on, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Each morning or the night before, her appointment was rescheduled at the last minute. As a result, she had a temporary crown on for three weeks. As a customer, it's about setting expectations. It's really frustrating to have to keep preparing mentally for getting a crown and then not have it happen. I know this is routine for you as a dentist, but for regular people it's stressful. Here's what your practice could have done better: 1. Being apologetic and polite when rescheduling due to your error 2. Being proactive and calling Sara on Friday when the cap finally arrived. Actually, as staff member promised to do this but didn't follow through. 3. Explaining what happened such that the tooth was lost and they didn't know when it would come in. 4. Stop canceling at the last minute. I understand you wanted to wait for it to come in, but this could have been handled better. Then, today, when Wife came in, the cap was put in, which was good. But they kept her waiting 30 minutes while they called the insurance company. This could have been done before she arrived during the work day, and, at the very least, before the shots numbed her mouth. I like the dental work you actually do, but the practice is too disorganized. We are going to seek treatment elsewhere. I want to give you feedback so that your team can improve. Stay away. This place has drill-happy dentists who insist they need to fill immediately every little decay they spot. I was their patient for almost two years. The last time I went they wanted to fill two teeth which I have so far shown to two other dentists who agreed they did not in fact need to be filled at all. Makes me question whether I actually needed the two fillings I allowed them to do previously. Gone are the days of skipping dental appointments out of fear, because this is where I'm going until my teeth and I are rotten and dead. Not only are the staff here polite, patient, and helpful but they also do a tremendous job. I've visited the dental hygenist (I want to say her name was Anna, but I'm not sure. She was a nice blonde lady) for a routine cleaning, and a deep cleaning. Not only did she clean my teeth very well (and without any pain) but she taught me a lot about dental hygiene. She explained what she was doing, why she was doing it, and what I can do to prevent needing her to do it ever again. I walked out of that place and immediately bought several boxes of floss and a new toothbrush. She was so knowledgeable and conversational about the procedure, that I can't believe I used to visit dentists who would just SAY I needed something, and then just LET them do it. Advanced Dental Arts has reinvented what dental appointments are for me. The icing ontop of the cake? They have a room that looks like you're underwater! So it's like you're getting your teeth cleaned...while you're underwater! Albeit, I'm sure it's for children, but I am still trying to get them to seat me in there. One day. read more

They need to be more transparent and communicative with their patients on various levels. This one is a long one folks so TL;DR, - You might not be seeing the dentist you booked and they won't tell you that - Something shady is going on with claims on high-priced procedures they ask you to pay upfront for When I initially booked to come here for my first visit, I had booked to be seen by Dr. Bertman. I chose Dr. Bertman for his great reviews on ZocDoc and for his experience and expertise. When I arrived for my appointment and was seated in the chair, I was told I was going to be seen by another doctor. At no point did they ever say I was NOT going to be seen by Dr. Bertman until I was already in the chair. They even had called the day before to confirm my appointment. They could've said then that I was going to be seen by a different dentist. As another reviewer said, you book practitioners not practices. You expect to be seen by the doctor you have booked. However, I let this slide as the dentist I ended up seeing (Dr. Angra) is amazing. Sadly I won't be seeing her as long as she is at Advanced Dental Arts. This turned out to be the lesser of my two complaints. It is my experience having a root canal here is why I'll never come back. A couple days before I was to have a root canal, I called to let them know my insurance changed. I arrive to my appointment to find out they in fact did not confirm my insurance so I had to wait around 30min while they tried calling them up. Even the endodontist (Dr. Kim) I was see ing came out and was wondering what the hold up was. This was the exact scenario I was trying to avoid when I called in advance. After a while, they ended up bringing me to a room and sitting me in the chair to get started and told me someone would come back soon to go over the costs of the root canal. Very unprofessional to be rushed into the root canal procedure and have the costs explained to me in the chair minutes before I have the procedure done. The woman from the front comes back and states that I'm to pay upfront ($2k) for the root canal procedure and insurance would reimburse me 60-80% of the total. I was totally fine with that knowing I was going to be reimbursed. Now comes the issue of trying to get reimbursed for the procedure. About a week and a half after the procedure I called the office to ask about what the status was for my reimbursement. They put me on hold for about 20min while they said they would check on it. "How can I help you?" a woman answers. "Yes I was calling to ask about the status of reimbursement for my root canal". She had forgotten that she put me on hold. "Oh yes, we're still checking on it. Why don't we give you a call back instead of having you wait." "No problem" I said and I hung up. They never called back. I ended up calling back 3 more times during the next month to check on the status for my reimbursment. I also had another appointment during that timeframe to receive the crown for that root canal. Every single time I asked about it they gave me the same answer. "We'll submit it again electronically and mail another copy". 2 months go by since the procedure and still no word from my insurance that they received the claim. I called my insurance to make sure it wasn't something on the insurance side... but that didn't make sense since they've been receiving all the other claims from the other smaller procedures I had done. So I thought why don't I personally fill out the claim and submit it myself so then at least I finally know FOR SURE that it's a problem on the insurance side of receiving the claim. Lo and behold, a week later I get notified from my insurance that they received the claim. I'd be getting reimbursed for about 25% of the $2k. Not the 60-80% the woman stated I would get when she explained it to me in the chair, but at that point it was better than the $0 that I thought I was going to get. Turns out the endodontist that did my procedure was out of network for me. Well gee, that definitely would have been nice to know when you're telling me that I'm to pay $2k up front as I'm sitting in the dental chair about to get the procedure done. I'm very grateful that I do have a good job and was able to foot the bill. I don't know what I would've done if I put that on my CC and wasn't able to pay that back. And to think I would have gotten NOTHING back if I didn't think of filing the claim myself. I don't know if they were trying to avoid sending the claim for some reason or if Dr. Kim didn't want this claim to be filed or what (if so they were straight up lying to me everytime I asked about the status of the claim), but this has been one of the most frustrating experiences dealing with a practice trying to get reimbursed. Despite my horrible experience, EVERYONE at Advanced Dental Arts was nothing but nice. The practitioners and the assistants... everyone. So it really sucks that I now have to find another practice to go to. read more

I went to advanced dental arts as I had two decent sized gaps after getting Invisalign. They were initially super helpful and the consultation, procedure and payment was done all in one day. In the consultation I spoke with a woman, who stated this was a cosmetic procedure and that I needed to pay them then my insurance would pay me based on what was covered but she was quite sure my insurance would cover it all and that they "build a narrative" to be more acceptable to my insurance. Sounded a bit like lying but, I wanted to get my money back. I got the procedure and was upsold to get bonding on two additional teeth at a total cost of $3000, but it did look better so I was happy with it. When getting billed I was told they would work with my insurance and that I needed to pay in full, which I did. I was also told my insurance would send me a check based on what was covered by the claim. I later called my insurance and found out that wasn't exactly true. I called ADA to get a receipt of the exact claim being submit and the director of operations was very combative and called me hostile and aggressive, when I was actually just frustrated and concerned and anyone with empathy would understand and try to help. I ended up getting less than 25% of what I paid and had a pretty bad customer service experience, but I do like the way my teeth look. Glad they were great for some, but for me I would not recommend and never plan on visiting again. read more

I've been a patient here for 5-10 years, and can't stress enough how much I appreciate the ENTIRE staff's service, attentiveness, friendliness, and flexibility. Particularly gigantic shout out goes to my favorite hygienist of all time, Tatiana, who is not only lovely to be around, but also knowledgeable, notices things others might not, and goes the extra mile by remembering personal details to make the experience even more memorable (yes, still talking about a dentist's office). Also worth mentioning that they typically have specialists (e.g. orthodontist, periodontist) in the office weekly, so it's particularly convenient when any additional service is required as it's all at one central location. Soooo I wanted to like this place sooo much. I'm so frustrated with this place. My crown cracked from when I went last year. Okay cool... but the dentist put a temp tooth that kept coming out every two days so I had to keep returning until my crown was made. So it's been a week since I have got my crown and now today, it comes out while I'm chewing tuna. I was told that the crown is supposed to last at least 5 years.. I am so happy I found this practice !! I chipped my front tooth and I was frantic ! I called the office and the receptionist was very helpful and informative. I must admit I was very nervous to come in due to current events but all my nerves subsided when I saw all the necessary precautions Dr.Bertman and the practice were taking to ensure patient safety. I was greeted at the door by an assistant who did a screening in regards to Covid and a temperature check, I was also happy to see air purifiers all throughout the office. Once I was seated Dr.Bertman walked in and was amazing ! He was patient, conservative and explained everything to me in detail. Since my first visit to Advanced Dental Arts 2 months ago, I have returned twice more, because not only is it not that scary, it's kind of awesome. The staff are all extremely friendly and professional and put you at ease. They explain everything that is going on so you feel like you know about your teeth, which you've neglected for years, and now want to take so much better care of. The environment is super clean and comfortable and easy to get to, and I never waited more than a few minutes before being seen. I came in to see Dr. Sinno after a bad experience with another NYC dentist. This other guy had put in three fillings (in 25 minutes) about three months ago, and one was already falling out and causing issues. Dr. Sinno was awesome. She quickly diagnosed the problem, and was able to re-do the filling in the same visit. She didn't try to sell me on additional services, or work I didn't need, which was appreciated. Anyone who has had a bad experience at a dentist knows how relieved I was to find someone who was competent, honest, and efficient. Will definitely be referring friends to her! (One note - this office does not do metallic fillings, so those of you with insurance that only covers those type of fillings maybe have to pay a little more out of pocket) read more

This is a truly dreadful place. The worst dentist I have ever been to. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Todd Bertman and his staff overcharged me by hundreds of dollars for dental work, then refused to issue me with a refund even when my insurance company told them to give me my money back. In the end, after waiting months, my dental insurance company gave me the refund themselves because Bertman and his cronies refused to respond to their letters. I found Bertman and his team to be less than honest in my dealings with them, the standard of work was not what I come to expect, and customer care was woeful. Sure, some of the hygenists are nice people, but those running the place leave a lot to be desired. Advanced dental arts will forever be the standard to which I hold all my medical practitioners. The office is bright, spacious, and gorgeous. The receptionists are super helpful and the hygienists and dentists are some of the nicest people I've met in the city. My first cleaning I got to watch a movie while the hygienist worked and afterward they showed me what my dental problems were and how I could tackle them. By my second visit, my gums (I have a history of gingivitis) weren't perfect, but were in healthier shape. It's a nutty concept to actually LOOK FORWARD to going to the dentist, but somehow they pull it off at ADA. I only wish finding doctors at their caliber was as easy. read more

I've been going to Advanced Dental Arts for three years now, and have always received excellent service from all staff. While I recommend them as an all around great dentistry location, they went above and beyond when one of my front teeth needed to be capped. I was terrified that it was going to be this glaring, off-color tooth for the rest of my life. The dental team at ADA gently walked me through my options (there were some tears involved!), and recommended a cap and a veneer for the other front tooth so that one would not look different from the other. Two years later, and I am so very happy with their work, and get compliments regularly on how great my teeth look. I really love this dental practice. This go-around I did not see Dr. Schraner, but Dr. Mazhar, whose work, demeanor, patience and skill are just outstanding. A tooth broke right before Labor Day (but of course) and when I finally came in in September it was clear two wisdom teeth had to go - great referral to Gary Ruth (I yelped him too). Dr. Mazhar has set about making me a crown. I love how he works and talks me through what is what. Sadly, Advanced Dental Arts will no longer be accepting my dental insurance. I wish Cigna DMO would be a viable supportive insurance reimburser so that great dental practices like Advance Dental Arts and great dentists like Dr. Mazhar could continue to offer care to patients like me. read more

Imagine visiting NYC for a long birthday weekend and in a moment of Friday evening clumsiness, chipping your front tooth. When I woke up in the morning and looked in the mirror all I could think about was how much I was going to hate looking at photos from the trip. All I could focus on was how my smile looked different. Initially I thought my chances were slim to none that I would ever find a dentist on a Saturday morning that would have an open appointment. I consulted Yelp and Advanced Dental Arts was the nearest office with Saturday hours. I called and spoke with Sebastian and explained the situation. He efficiently asked me a couple more questions and then told me I could be seen immediately. After arriving and filling out the paperwork, I was introduced to Dr. Anne Korkis. She restored my tooth in a matter of minutes and answered all of my questions. She gave me careful explanation of precautions to take and even encouraged me to call her if anything was needed before leaving the city for home. Everyone in this dental practice from the receptionist to the assistant, and most certainly the dentist was extremely kind and professional. They turned a really embarrassing situation into a funny birthday story :) I don't know if I'll ever call NYC home, but should it ever happen I am so happy to report that I've found my dentist. This experience was upsetting. I just moved to NYC from San Francisco and needed a tooth cleaning. A colleague referred me to Advanced Dental Arts. I arrived for the cleaning (which is all I requested on the initial appointment call) and was escorted to the dental chair by the dental assistant. She was super friendly. She said she was going to take x-rays but I told her that I had just had my x-rays recently done in California and didn't want more x-rays. She said no problem but requested that I have them sent by my California dentist as soon as possible after my visit. Then the dentist arrived to do an exam. I thought that was a bit usual since normally the exam occurs after a cleaning but I went with it. The dentist asked why I refused x-rays and I re-explained that I had just had x-rays done in California and I would have them sent shortly after my visit. She agreed, did the exam and left the room. 45 minutes after my arrival, the hygienist finally came in the room. She just looked at me and said, unless I get your x-rays on the spot she would not be doing a cleaning. I explained to her I'd had this conversation twice already and both times her colleagues had said it was OK to have them sent after my appointment. She questioned me on who said that... implying either that whoever did was not knowledgeable or perhaps I was making it up. Either way, not the best customer service move. My reaction was there was this very unusual obsession about getting x-rays. I asked her why she couldn't do the cleaning without the x-rays and she went into some canned answer about "liability" issues. It's so not a liability issue. It was all such a turn off. I walked out without getting my teeth cleaned. Since it is a requirement of this practice, as I learned the hard way, to have x-rays before doing a cleaning, they should have instructed me when I made my appointment and I would have arranged for them to be sent over prior to the appointment. The whole experience was so bizarre. I felt like common sense and good judgment were not used in this case. It's unfortunate; they lost a client who if this situation had been handled better could have become a dedicated patient. read more
