This review is not directed to the dentists at Advanced Dental Associates. I have been seeing Dr. Edwards for over 20 years. I started seeing him when he was located in that strip mall off O'Connor and Nacogdoches. He is probably the best dentist in San Antonio bar none. And I have been seeing Dr. Long since he started working there. This review is directed at (you guessed it) the office staff that handles the dental claims and communicates with it's patients...the ones responsible filing claims in a timely manner and communicating this process clearly to the patient. Definitely was not done in this case. In December of 2025 I had 2 tori removed. I was pretty sure insurance was not going to cover this. They (Riley) gave me a treatment plan that reflected my cost was around $1400 dollars. After the procedure when I went to pay I was told I owe $1701. I thought well they have overcharged me in the past but I always got a refund in a timely manner (after the insurance claim was filed). Also in all the many years i have been using them they have always filed to my dental insurance in a timely manner. And insurance immediately sends me a statement saying yes it's covered or no it's not and this is what you owe. Well that never happened in this case. The only thing that was filed initially was the sedation medication used. And it listed no surgical procedure. So insurance denied it saying basically what was the procedure? And I couldn't get an answer on why the office did that. They did file another procedure which was not the tori removal and my insurance paid it ($219) but it had nothing to do with the tori removal. And it was not performed on me. Bottom line: they never filed the tori removal to my dental insurance. Yes, most likely it would have been denied. But, now I could have appealed it. I would have to have shown it was medically necessary. Confusing the matter was that I called in late January 2026 asking about the filing of the claim and was told that I might be due a refund. I'm thinking why would I be due a refund? Now I'm totally confused. So I finally decided to just talk to one person (Riley) so I dont get conflicting info every time I call. She said she is working (communicating with corporate office) on my claim. That totally confused me again. Told her I just want my tori removal to be filed to insurance. She gave me a cryptic answer that she either does not get involved or has no control over the dental insurance part. But after several phone calls she said she would call when she knows something. Nope. That didn't happen. Fast forward about 4 months. I got a text from the office saying I owed another $337. When I called Riley I said I thought you were going to call me when this was resolved. She answered something to the effect she had a lot of people to call. read more

I have a disputed bill that I shouldn't even have. I was seen by Advanced Dental under the VA Community Care program and supposedly owe 2162.00. I was initially notified twice by text.. I called, disputed, was even told I shouldn't have a bill as I was VA. Well, I then received a bill in the mail for the same amount. The secondary issue concerns part of the balance. My wife, had GEHA High dental insurance and made an initial appointment. This service is listed as April 2, 2025 with a balance of 103.00 owed. Once again the problem is this.. It was covered in full by GEHA. I have called, disputed, and there doesn't really seem to be an interest in resolving this.. I guess the next step would be to call government agencies that handle this sort of mess.. Why? Because issues concerning something of this nature should be handled professionally and quickly. Their office does not know how to properly bill insurance resulting in excessive out of pocket fees. I was wondering how I just so happened to have a credit every time I went in. They also lied saying my insurance is out of network when they are listed as a provider. My roommate has had the same experience with their billing staff. read more

Appointment scheduled out 6 months in advance. Received numerous text messages confirming appointment. Show up 10 minutes prior to appointment for them to tell me they can't see me. They had sent a text to reschedule the Thursday before followed by a text to complete paperwork and again to confirm appointment all on Thursday. It was past operating hours when I was free to call and had planned to do so the following day. Coincidentally, Friday morning I received another text to confirm my appointment (which I did). All in all I received 8 text messages to confirm appointment. Office was polite but said those were automated and they couldn't be turned off. Completely wasted an afternoon for an appointment they kept telling me I had and if I didn't cancel or show up I would be charged a fee. Short story long, they make it very clear if you do not give them 48 hour notice they will charge you a penalty but when they are unable to live up to their confirmed appointments you are out of luck. Completely unprofessional and relying on automated texts that are misleading. read more

The billing department can't figure out which code to use to get paid by my insurance company....I even went in person and called my insurance company with them and when the insurance company said the code was incorrect for processing the billing lady turned red and got angry at the insurance rep. If she had done it correctly the first time the bill would have been paid...and when we hang up with the insurance company she says "I'll do it but it's not my job". Not cool....when you say you take my insurance that means it is your job to submit for payment and do it correctly. read more

GO TO ADVANCED ORAL SURGERY IF YOU ARE A VETERAN OR CARE ABOUT YOUR TIME GO TO ADVANCE ORAL SURGERY I went to advance dental associates on May 6th, 2025, at 10am and I was treated terribly. I was supposed to have tooth #15 extracted with IV sedation. Dr. Villarreal was trying to stick me in my left wrist with a butterfly needle. Not only did he stick me a total of 8 times, but he used the same butterfly needle twice without changing it out. Which is something you're not supposed to do. I already have a fear of needles and the dentist, and my blood started to drip on the floor. I started to cry due to being overwhelmed and he told the nurse to give me "laughing gas, free of charge". Dr. V proceeded to tell me to take deep breaths, due to this being my first time trying this type of 'calming' method. Shortly after, I did go in and out some, but I did feel him stick me again and he said "we really need to get her sedated" as he became flustered with the nurse. I tried to take the gas off my nose, but the nurse kept putting it back on my face. Finally, I took it off and realized I had these blood-soaked bandages on my arm, and I pulled them off. The nurse then came to clean the blood off my arms. By then, Dr. V had walked out and proceeded to work on another patient, leaving me in the room without informing me of what was going on. The nurse at my station kept complaining about having to leave and get her car, which made the atmosphere even less professional. I was very dizzy and lightheaded from the gas. I was in the office for 2-3 hours to the point my wife and child had to come in. Oddly, they lied to my wife saying they were finishing up with me, but they never even started on me. I gave them my wife's number a total of 5 times, and they never called her the whole time I was in there bleeding on their table. What type of office performs like this? Not to mention, I am a UNITED STATES ARMY VETERAN. And every time I asked the nurse, Evelyn, when would Dr. Villarreal return, who was literally across the hall!! She stated she did not know what was going on. Before leaving, I spoke with the manager, Jasmine, who stated Dr. Villarreal was the best in the office. However, she stated that he IS not the only dr present. Not only did the nurse for my procedure, Evelyn, state that there were no other doctors present. There are dozens of people walking around with scrubs unable to do anything medical or dental related. Not to mention, there were strange men with back packs just standing around. Something is not right about this office and now my arms and hands are bruised, and I feel unwell due to unnecessary medical negligence. read more

My previous dentist was great! I only left bc he moved his office across San Antonio. I was blessed to find Advanced Dental Associates! Nancy is my dental hygienist & she's fantastic! Not only is she completely thorough during my exams (she checks things in my mouth, tongue & jaw that nobody else has ever checked) but she is also a great person! She is friendly & fun! Getting a cleaning can be boring but it isn't with Nancy. She's wonderful & does a fantastic job. She takes pride in her work. When I walk out I know that my teeth & gums are clean & healthy. In 2019, I had to have a crown done. Dr. Long worked w an outside provider, Eddie w Dental Tech to get my crown to match my teeth perfectly. (I'll be writing a glowing review for him also) I'm so impressed by how much he cared that my teeth matched. I care a LOT about my teeth & the last thing I wanted was to have to get a crown much less one that didn't match. My crown matched perfectly. It has been well over a year since I had it done & I haven't had one issue. I waited to write this to make sure I was 100% happy & I definitely am... The staff is also phenomenal here. I met Jasmine on day 1. She is the best! So friendly & sweet! I just love nice people & EVERY person behind the front desk is fantastic! Right before I leave I usually check out w Lata. She is wonderful too! I wish I could remember the entire staffs names. They all deserve recognition. After my last dentist (he was actually a periodontist) I never thought I'd find another dental office that I loved but I have! Right HERE! For someone that loves their teeth as much as I do, Advanced Dental Associates has been a blessing! If you need something as routine as a cleaning or serious dental work done, I completely recommend giving this dental office your business. I am sure that you won't regret it. 12/4/21 Wow! It has been over a year since I wrote this draft & completely forgot to publish it BUT here is the GREAT news! The staff is still amazing. The dentists are still phenomenal & I will never let anyone clean my teeth again except for Nancy bc she is truly the most gifted and thorough dental hygienist on the planet . I swear she has only gotten BETTER! (Who knew that was possible?!) Idk ANYONE who loves their teeth or whom is as obsessed w their teeth as I am. So, when I say this... I mean it. If you need a dentist, look no farther. Their customer service is unparalleled! During my last visit I met Dr. Castillo & she was fantastic! She has such a friendly & kind demeanor! From the minute she walked in to examine me she made me feel at ease. I also met Amelia, a manager at the office. She was great! She was professional & yet still recommended a great restaurant for lunch w a friend of mine! When I checked out, Frankie helped me schedule my next appointment. She didn't just make an appt for me & push me out the door. She was friendly & made conversation w me while we found the perfect time for me to come back in. They booked me a 7 am appointment for a cleaning, which I really didn't want an appointment that early but they said that's all they had. Didn't want this early if an appointment because their hours start at 8 am and I knew I wouldn't be seen then and wouldn't you know it the hygienist wasn't even here. My advice don't book an appointment before their open time. read more

I moved to Advanced Dental Associates about a year ago because I had become dissatisfied with the dentist I was seeing at the time. I was a bit leery on my first visit because this practice handles a large volume of patients. In my previous experiences, this usually translates into rushed and impersonal care but in this case, it just meant they were efficient. The care I've received with ADA is outstanding! I've had several appointments in the last year and every time, I'm in the chair within 10 minutes of my appointment time and the doctor is there soon after. The doctor and staff made sure I was comfortable and explained my care thoroughly. What really made an impression on me though, is the friendly attitude of everyone around. These folks clearly enjoy working here because it shows in every way. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! I was misled and they took my money and I got nothing out of it. I have been a customer for as long as I can remember and last year I was offered a dental plan when I got my cleaning done which ran me $1,200 and the woman who walked me through the paperwork/contract (whom no longer works there) didn't mention it was a plan that expired the next year (I wouldn't have bought it if I had known). The problem is when I paid the money and was leaving the office after my cleaning the lady at the desk told me there wasn't any openings in the next few months so she asked if it would be ok to call me when something opened up. I said sure since I trusted them and been going there for so long. She called me 2 times months later asking if I can come in the same day or the next day. I couldn't because of work. Fast forward to next year when I was actually able to get a solid appointment and when I walk in they ask me to pay for the plan again to get my cleaning. So I paid $1,200 for a cleaning and a plan that was supposed to give me at least 2 more cleanings. And I got not a single appointment. $800 out of the window! The manager said she won't help me or work with me either. Shady business practices and very misleading. They could have informed me at the very least before I drove 30 minutes to the appointment. read more

I was referred here by another dentist and I was pleantly surprised. I suffer severe anxiety about getting any dental work done and have panic attacks just sitting in the dental office but everyone here was very friendly and professional, and it helped me to remain calm. The dentist and his assistant were both very understanding and patient with my anxiety. The dentist explained everything to me clearly and spent time with me to answer my questions and to address how best to handle my extreme anxiety. The ONLY negative thing I can say is that I felt like they are a bit expensive (especially if you don't have insurance). I WOULD recommend this dental office to friends and family, but I would warn them to be ready for sticker shock. read more

Dr Edwards is OUTSTANDING! I was in the Air Force for 20 years and my dentist there recommended him highly. I had two upper teeth that consisted of mostly metal fillings. They were so gray from the metal that when I smiled it looked like I was missing a few teeth in the back. Dr Edwards put two new porcelain crowns on them, had the crowns modified in the front to even out my smile, and they look great! He definitely knows what he is doing when it comes to the cosmetic side of things. Beyond the cosmetic improvement though in those teeth...he saved two of my bottom teeth. During his initial inspection he identified the fact they had internal resorption (my body was destroying the teeth from the inside out). He said it was extremely rare and recommended I have an endodontist evaluate them (he wasn't doing the procedure and didn't recommend a specific endodontist so it wasn't an upsell...it was legitimate concern for the teeth). I got a second opinion (and third from all of the endontists that wanted to see it) and he had nailed what it was. They were able to treat the teeth and save them. My previous dentists had all missed it. If I hadn't gone to see him I'd have lost the teeth and I'd have been out thousands and thousands of dollars for two implants down the road. Obviously after making my smile look great and saving two teeth for me, I'm a big fan. He knows what he is talking about, is friendly and made sure I was happy and comfortable before doing anything. I went to this office twice, once in September 2013 and once in April 2014. The last visit in April 2014 was the last time I went to this place. The first time I went to this place, I had a hygienist named Marilyn. She was professional and very nice. She made sure I got everything my insurance covered, including fluoride. The second time I went to this place, that was the end of my time. The lady named Lacey or something with an L in her name was very condescending and rude to me. I asked her for fluoride because I knew my insurance covered fluoride and that hadn't changed. All I have ever gotten from my insurance was medical information, I pay attention to everything I get from my insurance. I told her that I had not gotten anything stating anything had changed. I asked her to double check. She flat out refused and stood her ground. When I went to check out, I mentioned this to the lady who was checking me out. I told her that I didn't appreciate the hygienist making feel like I was an imbecile for asking her to double check to make sure my insurance didn't cover fluoride. I have that right and they didn't like that I asserted my right to ask a question about my insurance. Later that day, my mom called my insurance. She said yes, I was right and that I was indeed entitled to fluoride. She called the office and asked to speak to someone who deals with that kind of stuff. The lady whom my mom talked to after she got past the front desk actually checked my insurance and saw that I was right and that she was sorry for the mistake that the hygienist made. While I am going to out of network to my old dentist, they are always professional and courteous. I never asked to be treated like a criminal. That's what this place treated me like. I haven't gone back in 2 1/2 year and as far as I am concerned this place can go out of business. You do not treat customers like that. Ever. I am a cashier at Randolph AFB main exchange. If a customer questions me about something that I don't know, i call the department or a supervisor/manager. I don't leave the customer hanging and I certainly would never dream of treating a customer like a criminal because he/she asks a question. read more

My husband went and got his wisdom teeth taken out here, and when it was my turn to go in for some work, I was pleasantly surprised by the facility, the staff and of course, Dr. Edwards. They are all SO nice and professional and they crack jokes when they can. The doc even hands out his personal cell phone to patients in case of any pain outside of normal business hours. I went in for a consultation today and LOVED the entire office. From the front desk to my dental assistant to the dentist! Everything was Great. I walked in early to fill out paperwork I was greeted as soon as I walked up, I immediately heard her check me in on their Bluetooth headsets (awesome, and I can't even remember her name I'm horrible) filled out my paperwork have it back and had the dental assistant bring me back. Dr.Edwards was great so personable and went through everything with me from why I was initially consulted for, to what would be best for further treatment and cleaning. I was given a treatment plan with estimate and a few different options as far as payment goes. I will DEFINITELY be back in for my surgery and further treatment and have NO problem referring family/friends. read more

I called when the office was closed last Friday to see if they took my insurance and if they were accepting new patients. I left a voicemail message and was called before 8:30 Tuesday morning (they were closed Monday for Memorial Day). They verified that they take my insurance and were able to schedule me an appointment the same day! The office staff and technicians were very friendly and put me at ease. I was seen by Dr Edwards and Dr Long and they both were very nice and personable. I am always nervous at the dentist but they put me at ease right away. They explained thoroughly what was needed to be done and I was then scheduled for my treatments the very next day. Today the office staff called me to see how I was doing and if I had any questions. I also had been given the personal cell phone numbers of the dentists in case I have any concerns when the office is closed. I am definitely making this my regular dental office. I was very pleased with everything! I was also seen by Dr Villarreal as needed some extractions but I don't remember him as I was already sedated when he saw me! read more
