When it comes to my Inifinti G35 coupe, I am willing to spend money as I don't want to have any accidents or broken car in the middle of a freeway. I had been religiously going to my car dealership at Cupertino and the interaction with them is not so great as the people there are cold and unfriendly. After spending $3000+ for the past 3 year on regular maintainence (btw, my car only have total of 42000 miles on it), I decide to take a leap of faith to try out other mechanics when I have a hard time to start my car in the morning and need to jump my car with the cables. I can't believe I didn't seek out Dave's Auto Repair earlier!!! Here's my story: When I called 8:00am Friday to make a same day appointment, Patrick helped squeeze me into their fully booked schedule. I dropped off my car there at 9:00am explaining I have difficulty starting my car and also need my 3000 mile regular maintenence. I asked if my car need synthetic oil and Dave honestly explained that my car wouldn't need it as it doesn't have a big tank to hold it; it would be a waste of money. At noon, they told me my battery is the reason; in addition, they told me my airfilter is super dirty and my windshield wipers are on its last legs. At 5:00pm, they finished everything!!! Super fast! Now I'm happily starting my car in the morning easy and my windshield wipers stopped making squeaking noise. I took my car to Dave's after a trip to Jiffy Lube left my car shaking and running terribly. I called him and he told me I could bring my car right in and he'd take a look. He found that the jiffy lube guys filled one of my cylinders with water, showed me the problem and sucked out the water - all for FREE. My car was running as normal after that. I'm never taking my car to a jiffy lube again - any repairs/maintenance business will all go to Dave's! The paint on my car chipped and the paint around the chip was peeling. I went to Dave's to ask them if they could throw together a self-repair kit for me, which I would happily pay for. They just gave me the supplies I needed free of charge, told me how to fix it, and sent me on my way. It's hard to find better customer service than that. read more

Couldn't think less of an establishment. Felt like I've been robbed. Took car in with significant engine trouble. Was told it would be $135 to evaluate and see what's wrong. Got a report back with info about fluid levels, tire pressure, brake lights, etc... and nothing about the engine. They called and said they'd need another hour to really understand what's going on in the engine. Uh.. isn't that what the first $135 was for? I agreed to another hour. Post that, they called and said: "well it could be a few different things. One thing would be $1K to fix and the other would be $5K+ to fix." Serious engine trouble... that's not the issue. He said he's need another hour to be sure! I had had enough and left. Pure BAIT AND SWITCH. So, $270 in and I still know nothing about what's actually wrong with my engine. They literally robbed me. I bought the battery as a back up and when my battery failed for the third time in a week, I just had to get it installed before I took another long trip and couldn't wait for my husband to do it. I've been taking my cars to Dave's for a few years now. I go there all the way from Campbell because I have been able to count on good service at an honest price. I just recently took my car there to get the oil changed and get it checked out before selling it. There were some minor issues with it, but nothing major and Dave recommended saving my money. It was nice that they try to look out for what's in my interest as a customer and not just sell me more service. I've previously had an engine replacement done at Dave's after getting a quote from another shop closer to home and Dave's rate was much better. They did a great on the engine replacement and the car has worked well for a long time afterwards. read more

Short version: If you are looking for a good mechanic, just go to Dave's and be done with it. Dave's Auto Repair has all of the virtues you want in a mech, and none of the vices. Lengthy reasoning and justification for statements in short version : First, I don't write reviews. That is how good these guys are. I made a Yelp account for the sole purpose to write this review. Second, I am unnaturally fond of my truck (there have been complaints in the past, but hey...I cannot count the number of times that having that truck has gotten me and my worldly possessions out of bad situations. Maybe you would feel the same after similar experiences). Because of my rabid protectiveness, I am incredibly picky about mechanics. I have been to a fair few once, vowing to never let them get their mitts on my precious vehicle again because of some small slip-up or piece of erroneous advice (once, because I didn't like the receptionist tone of voice...she didn't seem to CARE!). When it comes to mech's, I am worse than the most obnoxious soccer mom who once in the past found out that her day-care was run by ex-cons. Suspicious, paranoid, neurotic, insanely over-concerned...you name it. So. Bearing this in mind, I have brought my vehicle to Dave three times and every time been happy and content about the service I have received. I would not hesitate to take it there again. My criteria to base this happiness on is: 1) They know what they are doing. Every repair that Dave has performed has been done well and there have been no future problems. 2) They don't muck you about. You give them your ride, you get told what the trouble is, how long and how much and that IS how long and how much. This all happens in a timely manner. None of that waiting in limbo stuff. 3) They don't try to make as much money off of you as credulity will bear. Twice, I thought my repair would be something expensive. Twice, Dave did the inexpensive repair that I needed, rather than the expensive thing I thought I needed. Any mech must have these three characteristics to see me more than once. I will not give my truck over to someone where there is any shadow of a doubt regarding their competence or honesty. I would not hesitate to give Dave my truck again. Additionally, here there are also the facts that: 4) Every time I have been there, I have dealt with Dave. I don't know about you, but I like it when the guy who's name is on the door is the guy I am talking to. 5) They have been unfailingly nice to me. There has been none of the condescension that a car-ignorant female often gets. If you don't know what I mean, consider yourself lucky. I have gotten explanations to my satisfaction, which is rare indeed. 6) They behave considerately to the person attached to the vehicle, up to and including remembering that I sleep late, and don't like 9am phone calls. I have been tempted to keep quiet about Dave's, so that they don't get swamped with customers, but excellent business practices like this should be rewarded and encouraged. read more

the shop is way too expensive. charged me $70 labour for a mere 5-10 min job. also overcharged on the part. i wanted to replace my brake light switch and ended up paying more than $100 for a 10 min job. i would not recommend it to anyone. look around for cheaper mechanics especially for jobs that need very little expertise. hope this saves you from a rip off. swapn read more

I used to think this was a really good place, I always trust family owned shops. I had a problem with my Lexus, they replaced my battery within 20 minutes, it was really fast. Now i have a problem with my other car (not going to name it) Its a 2000-2005 Car. It needs a EVAP Canister replacement. I already know whats wrong and what item needs to be bought, I just need an estimate on how much it would cost to Put the parts in. The guy on the phone said "WE HAVE TO DO A DIAGNOSIS OURSELVES" "WE DO NOT TRUST SECOND HAND INFORMATION" And it costs $130 for diagnosis, I bought the scanner just so I can skip the diagnosis check, What the hell is the point of a scanner if they need to diagnose it themselves, Just a bunch of greedy useless people. read more

i went to dave's hearing high recommendations from people i knew and from yelp. i was sorely, sorely disappointed. after having misdiagnosed my a/c problem (and charging me a recharge fee and diagnosis) i had to go back a week later when it was busted again. there was not even an ounce of trying to help me out. after hearing how he really tries to keep costs down, and is honest, i felt the complete opposite. i was recharged the a/c charge fee again, on top of the repair. he took no ownership in the fact that they had misdiagnosed the problem originally. again, dave misdiagnosed the problem, originally telling me it was just a hose replacement, and then coming back (after talking to his parts guy who told him it wasn't just a hose you could replace) i would have thought a competent mechanic would be able to know what all needed to be replaced. needless to say, i will not be going back or recommending him to anyone. especially when we found a place that would have done the same work for $80 less. read more

FIrst time customer. My check engine light went off while driving home in the later evening. Like everyone else I don't have much free time and in this case only had one day to get my car fixed. Normally I would take it into the dealership but that's a 30-40 minute drive. Dave's Auto Repair is a 5 minute drive from my house, and after reading the many positive Yelp reviews, decided to take my car here. Dave was straightforward, polite and honest. He spoke very plainly and took the time to diagnose the reason why the check engine light went off. (While picking up my car he even gave me pointers and showed me how to check if things were okay afterwards.) He was able to get my car fixed by 3pm that day at a very reasonable price. I took my car in to Dave's because a warning light came on, and Dennis figured out the problem and fixed it quickly. The car needed to run some tests before I could get a smog test done, and it took over a week for my car to finally run the last test. In the meantime, Dennis checked the flags every day after I'd driven on the highway--and sometimes he took the car out to try to get it to reset the flag on the highway himself--for free. He was always cheerful and quick when he interrupted his other work to check my car, and Christina in the office was also always cheerful and nice to talk to when I'd show up yet again. I was another Ole's customer (for 20+ years....seriously); I even used to have him work on my car when I was living in the East Bay as a student. When he was closing, he mentioned that his main diagnostician/technician was starting a place, I took the rec and was glad I did. He's always efficient and honest. I know one reviewer suggested that Dave "pressured" him to do more work - I've NEVER had him recommend anything that didn't seem reasonable. Dave gave me an estimate of $60 for a half hour of time to fix a broken tail light that I thought was due to an electrical problem. About an hour after dropping my car off, he called saying that my car was fixed. He only charged me $10 for a new bulb and not a penny for labor even though I know it must have taken at least 15 min to replace it. read more

I just have to say that Dave is absolutely amazing. I don't live in the area and I freaked out because my rear window of my BMW would not roll up. I didn't want to drive 45 miles to my regular mechanic as I still had an event to attend in town but didn't know what to do about my window. I called 3 different places (one I used to even go to when I lived in the area). Dave is the only one that called me back. I explained my situation thinking it was the regulator and if he could get it fixed so I didn't have to drive home to my regular guy. Not only did Dave help me out with directing me to where exactly the shop was (because my GPS was totally off), but he was so kind to be get my window up temporarily until I got back home. This was a while back but I figured I need to do this. I was charged twice the amount I was quoted and the gentleman at the reception had a "too bad" attitude. I took my car in first and was given a bid. When I went to drop my car, I was notified of the steep increase (replacement part turned out twice as expensive) and given the option to take my business elsewhere. It was unfortunately not feasible for me so I had to get the repair done. My car has been twice as noisy since. read more
