Far and away the most honest and knowledgeable auto repair service I've ever dealt with. I'm comfortable enough to perform a lot of the basic car maintenance myself on our Lexus and Acura, but once it gets beyond something I can do in an hour or so, I take our cars to the Sunnyvale Foreign Car team. My car got a thorough inspection and repair. I thought I just needed a brake job and I'm sure other places would have just replaced the pads but they realized the caliper was sticking and ended up replacing a lot more, checked/replaced the brake fluid and now I have safe brakes. That wasn't cheap but if you drive in San Francisco you want your brakes to work. They went with my suggestion to replace the transmission fluid to get the synchros working again without transmission work, identified the right fluid, and solved my problem that way. Other items for future work were identified and I'm now confident that my ride is safe. read more

The team here explained everything they would check the vehicle for upfront and had a reasonable rate for the level of work. They followed through with an in-depth analysis of even the smallest of blemishes and things to keep an eye out for moving forward. Due to circumstances, I wasn't able to make it to the shop at the same time as the seller. However, I was more than satisfied with the follow-up phone call and evaluation of the vehicle and everything was sent to me over the phone. It's always a good sign when you call a business and the owner picks up. Matt, the shop owner, was great over the phone and was very transparent about their pricing. When I brought the car in, Matt was immediately available at the front and remembered our conversation. I've had issues at other shops where I would stand and wait in the front and no one would even acknowledge me. That was clearly not an issue here. It was also comforting to see other BMW's in the shop. They even gave me a free ride home and pickup (saving me a $20 uber ride). I will say that their prices are higher than other quotes I received, but you get what you pay for. They seem to do a reasonable job, but they are very expensive. Once they missed a problem with our alternator, which left us stranded on the highway. After towing to their shop, they still charged us $85 to look at the problem. Then they charged us around $800 to replace the alternator on a old Subaru Outback with a rebuilt alternator. This was is a little higher than we expected, and actually higher than what the dealer service would have charged. We are new to the area and so sort of got trapped by these folks. We will be getting our Subaru serviced at the dealer until we can find a better independant shop. read more

The folks at this auto repair are very social and friendly. However, there prices are extremely high. 1. For timing belt and water pump we were quoted $2300. Before the work was actually done, I got nervous and called Broadway Auto in Redwood city. They are a dealership and the same job for the same car and engine would cost $1047. This is a huge discrepancy. I later took the car to the PEP boys and they performed this service for less than $800 with lifetime parts and 1 year labor warranty. By the way, I never got any type of detailed cost itemization for the $2300 work. I assume I would have gotten it afterward. That's too late. read more

Usually, I only like leaving positive reviews, but here is my honest experience with Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service. My car needed an oil change/service. It had been a while, so I was looking around for a shop to take care of my BMW 335i. I contacted Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service, as they had exceptional reviews and comments. I got ahold of Matthew, who was very kind and courteous. We set up an appointment for a few days later. I arrived at the shop about 10 minutes before my appointment. It was somewhat chaotic. I was informed that they were short staffed and a little behind, and that I may have to wait. I was fine with that. Unfortunately, their waiting area consists of only three chairs, to which, all were already taken. So, I stood the whole time my car was being serviced. I was also fine with that. Fast forward two weeks later. I notice oil on my driveway but don't think much of it as I have just had my car serviced. Eventually, I discover, that it is in fact my car. I realized that I should make an appointment to have this checked out. One night, my car starts making an awkward noise near the engine. My brother and I notice quite a bit of oil around the engine and that it was the belt that was making an odd noise. The next morning, I called Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service around 7:30/8:00 AM to see if they can take a look at the car to assess why it may be leaking oil and making odd noises. I didn't get ahold of Matthew, however, the staff on the phone informed that there probably isn't a chance that they could get to it. I asked if there was any way at all that they could just simply look at it to assess if they had overlooked anything, and the only response that I got was that 'it doesn't look like it, but they could try' I asked if there is any timeframe, and I was told that there is none, and that they may have to keep it over the weekend just to look at it. I'm not saying that Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service is responsible for the oil leak, or the belt noise, but it started 2 weeks after I had my car serviced there. It had never had this issue before. All that I wanted at that time was for them to simply take a look and assess the issue. I called another shop that same morning. They were able to analyze the issue. They informed me that I had two oil leaks leaking 'substantial' amount of oil. The mechanic even said that he was surprised that the previous shop had not brought this to attention. Due to the substantial amount of oil leak, the replacement of parts and labor cost me $$$$. Matthew seems like a genuine business owner, but unfortunately, after my experiences, I won't be taking my business here. read more

My vehicle is out of warranty and I decided to find a certified BMW repair shop. So blessed to have found 5 star reviews on yelp. We met Matt, the owner & as soon as we turned on the engine, he knew exactly what the problem was. After running the diagnostics, he showed us a 2 page printout and explained "in detail and in a language that we can understand" what the symbols meant. He sounded very knowledgeable about European cars and we didn't feel like he was trying to rip us off. He claims to be using the same diagnostic system that the BMW dealerships are using and that he uses original parts and oil. The best thing is he charged us much less for labor than what BMW charges ($150 per hour). It took 2 days to get the work done. $158 for initial & final diagnostics. He gave us the estimate for parts (which we knew BMW parts would be $$$) and the labor price added to it. Later on we went online to search how much BMW parts would cost & added how much the dealership would most likely charge for labor & the difference was pretty significant!!! After getting the final bill from Matt we were so relieved. The labor cost was much much less. The guy is also personable & easy to talk to. When my husband picked up the car, Matt showed us the parts he took out and they looked legitimately broken & worn out. The parts put in the car looked original but newer. This guy can be trusted. Happy to meet Matt and we'll def be coming back here, hopefully not too soon. read more

My office moved recently. As such, I am now again within "striking distance" from SFCS. I am happy about this as I had taken vehicles to SFCS / Matt P in past with great results. I have always been happy with their service. I was "lucky enough" to unavoidably run over something recently in my BMW. Almost immediately, I heard nasty sounds from the transmission. Wanting a shop I knew I could trust when a large repair may be in store, I made sure I got it to Matt (especially given the aforementioned "striking distance"). Well, worst fears were confirmed...a split in the trans case. Matt was good about getting me in right away, working with me and my insurance, suggesting other repairs and maintenance that may be advantageous to consider while the transmission was being removed and replaced, and finally, he had the car done in less than three working days. Matt is more than happy to discuss the repairs with you, show you on your car why the repairs are warranted and show you the removed parts. He appreciates that you are interested and involved. I noticed some of the other reviews mention concerns for price and possible unwarranted up sell. However, I choose to have sports cars. Moreover, it is the cheap (not the prudent) man that will wind up paying more. I know a fair amount about cars and Matt has always suggested (not pressured) reasonable repairs and maintenance that are consistent with the repairs and maintenance undertaken. He let me know my options and I chose the ones I believed would be a good idea. In addition, if a mechanic who knows what he is doing charges more than the cheapest rate in the market, I would offer that is money well spent as compared to misdiagnosed, improper or unwarranted repairs. Their shop has been family owned for close to 50 years. Why would they screw up a thriving, ethical business for an up sell? None of my repairs or maintenance at SFCS have been misdiagnosed, improper or unwarranted. Their shop has been family owned for close to 50 years. Everything they say about SFCS is true. When our Mazda hiccuped, coughed, and died on the 85 during rush hour (yes, we were THOSE people, the ones who make everyone else late to work by stalling) my husband called me to find a mechanic nearby. There was no way we were towing it back to SF. I found SFCS on Yelp, and half an hour later the car was in their capable hands and my husband was getting a ride to work from the owner's mother. It turned out that our entire transmission had seized up, burning out the clutch in the process. SFCS found us a great used transmission, cutting some money off what was inevitably going to be a wallet-buster of a repair. They had the car back to us in about a week, and everything's been great since. Sure, it was not the cheapest way to fix what was going to be an expensive repair. But there was zero upselling -- they even diagnosed some minor problems that they told us to wait on fixing while our wallet recovers from this one -- and the service was friendly and knowledgeable. If your car is going to die on the 85 during rush hour, this is the place to go. read more
