I really had to work to make it to this playground to experience it. The times posted vary by season and weren't updated anywhere. Really fun play space but beware it's in a very natural environment so you want to plan ahead and know your kiddos will be covered in dirt/ dust when done playing. A change of clothes will help. First off the directions to this place are absolutely ridiculous. And nobody that works in library can give simple directions. You will be hand outdated map that is equally ridiculous. Google maps takes you to library. Long story short spent 45 minutes walking around looking for this place. Only to finally arrive and it is closed!!!! Site says open yet it is completely abandoned and CLOSED. Looked like a fun lil park to play yet it is closed. Don't waste your energy or time. My 5 yr old son had a great time! We went on May 31 and it was pretty hot out. He enjoyed the large lego blocks and the slides- but be careful the slides can get hot as they're not really shaded. The library was closed but the community center was open which had very nice bathrooms. There were at least 20 kids running around and everyone was having a good time. I highly recommend! read more

Our summer camp day care had numerous field trips throughout coastal north OC, and this park universally the most beloved for all ages, K-8. I'm just surprised such a place still exists in an age of overprotected, participation-trophy kids in leashes and escalator helmets. Before joining the outdoor three-ring circus, everyone pays a dirt cheap price (emphasis on the dirt) and takes off their shoes (I think it was a rule). No lockers. Sometimes a kids would go home with one shoe. I assume another went home with three. One "ring" is a desolate place full of nails and wood and nails and tools and wood with nails and nails in wood. Kids without gloves or goggles climb rickety, unsanded platforms and arbitrarily nail wood wherever they want. It's like Legoland without the Legos. The second ring is a homemade water slide: basically a trash bag-lined channel dug into a muddy dirt hill with hose water running down it. It's like Disneyland without the Disney, though you will look like Pooh. The third ring is a shallow swamp with wood rafts and poles. It's like Clearwater, Florida without the clear or the Florida. It will remind you of the West Nile. At least maybe the virus. Barefoot kids running around. It's so 1880s Mississippi. I mean, how the huck is this place still in business? (OSHA? More like OSHIT.) Take your kids here to let them experience what it was like for us 70s kids, who rode bikes without helmets, drank out of hoses, dodged lawn darts, and had to fetch the spaghetti spoon our parents would beat us with (maybe that's just me). read more

This is a fun place for elementary aged children. There's large Lego blocks for building, tubes and paddles for the water and a water slide. The staff are very friendly and try to remind children of the expectations of the playground. I give this place 4 stars because I saw several children or adults in either water shoes or sandals while some families were turned away for wearing these shoes. The staff at the entrance is either not catching this or people are changing their shoes once they get inside. Another negative of this playground is that parents aren't watching their kids. This was my first time here. My 4 and 7 year old loved it, my 9 year old was bored after 30 min. No more rafts but tubes instead. I thought it was more mud but it was more like a pond which was actually nice because they didn't get as dirty but did get very wet. Keep in mind they don't allow crocks, water shoes or open toes anything. Kids must wear closed toed shoes. Bring extra clothes bc they will be wet. I suggest a bathing suit. Awesome outdoor fun for elementary aged children! Reservations via HBsands.org is recommended, $4 / child and adults are free. Closed toe shoes without straps and holes are required for children and adults. My son had such a fun time here on a Friday, we spent 4 hours! Crowd definitely dies down after lunch. Your child WILL get wet and dirty (literally)! Staff was great and friendly and had fun with the children. They provided water squirter for the kids to play with. My son's favorite was to relax in the murky mud tummy down and floating in the tubes. No time limit for the tubes if there isn't a line. If there is a line, they are limited to 5 mins. I was so excited to take my boys here and really wanted to love it...... but we didn't. My oldest son (9) and his friend (8) were not feeling it. My younger son (5) actually liked it the most which makes sense. I don't know if it's due to the changes that were made post COVID, but it is geared more towards younger kids. Honestly I think this place is perfect for kids 2 1/2-5 any older and they won't last long. The park is a lot smaller than it appears and standing in line for everything is a bummer. They took out the building elements that made this place so much fun, in the name of safety. It's now safe, but zero fun. There's a small slow slide, a rope bridge, a few inner tubes for floating in the mud pit and some big legos. And that's it. My kids were done after about 20 minutes. We had a blast here today with the kids. They enjoyed playing in the shallow swampy pool. There are wood rafts and sticks that the kids can use to push themselves around. The water is swampy green there was a hose running into it but it's definitely not chlorinated pool water. The mud slide is a giant hill with black tarp laid over it. The kids had fun sliding down and landing in a giant muddy puddle. It opens specific times for a few minutes during the day. There is a section on the left where the tree forts are and kids can build things with hammer, nails and scraps of wood. There is some risk due to nails sticking out of boards and tools involved, but the kids seemed to be cautious enough not to get hurt. I would suggest sturdy bottomed shoes or boots incase. There are a decent amount of shade trees you can find but not many tables and chairs. You could definitely bring extra chairs if your planning on sitting to the side while kids play. There are wooden changing stalls, a small outdoor shower head to rinse off. They sell water and junk food type snacks and drinks. Bring a change of clothes, shoes and towel. What a let down this place was. Pathetic water slide, rope bridge about as fun as watching paint dry. Both ponds are way to shallow...some spots are only 6 inches deep with concrete beneath waiting for your kid to slam his knees or worse their head. I wish there were more playgrounds like this. I emerged going here when I was a kid and was excited to take my own kids. There are some picnic tables, but I take my own chair to sit in. We take in our own food as well. I like that it's only $3 and the staff explain the rules to the kids. My kids had the most fun in the forts. They are able to be creative, building with tires and wood pieces. They made a table and a covering to sit underneath. They used tires as chairs and had to work as a team to do the heavy lifting. All kids are given 3 nails, but are also told that if they pick up trash in the park, they can trade it in for more nails. Every day the forts are cleaned to bare bones so the next day kids can begin building again! If there was a bathroom I would give 5 stars, but you have to use port a potties. read more

Came here on a field trip and the kids were having a blast in the water for about an hour and a half. Unfortunately one of the workers, a bit of a burlier man, came out and started regulating some lame rules. Prior to this none of the other workers seemed to mind that the kids were playing like proper children. Things like "no splashing," "you can't play on the side of the water with rafts unless you are on a raft" (the raft area makes up about 95% of the whole pond), etc. It was quite sad to hear the cheerful sound of children playing suddenly and abruptly get cut off and turn to dead silence.. I am a mom of 4 boys as most of our friends are boy families. So about 4 families and about 10 boys decided to go to Adventure Playground. We got mixed reviews from the boys. My 7 year old loved it. The area where you can build to your heart's desire was his favorite. He also liked the rafts. But, my 5 year old was not digging his shoes being wet and had a melt down after he went on the water slide. He refused to do anything after that. My 9 year old couldn't care much for it because there's dirt everywhere. So, I'll probably be back with just my 7 year old and his friend. It's a good way to spend a day that's uber cheap. I never knew this place existed but it's been around for 40 years. It's a perfect spot for summertime with the kids. And only $3 per child. You can stay as long as you want playing on the fun rafts or forts. The water is only a foot deep or so, so no worry's if they can't swim. And on the fort area is a great refresher to all the usual caution-heavy playgrounds where they're afraid of any kind getting hurt. Here, they give each kid a hammer and saw and let them just go to town with the forts and build whatever they want from the wood pile. It's pretty awesome. read more

We finally visited the Adventure Playground Park (aka: Mud Park) in Huntington Beach (video below). You can't beat this sort of fun for just $3 per kid! A hidden gem to the right of the Central Library, up a sprawling hill with a cemented path that should be painted like 'the yellow brick road' (seriously, so people can find the place). The Mud Park is only open during the Summer and owned by the city. In fact, there is limited information about the park for the exception of the city's' website, Yelp reviews and a few blogs. Right off the bat, map the address for directions and park in the Central Library's lot. What's awesome about the parking (besides being free) is that it's shaded by solar panels, which will keep your car cooler. You can even fit a small RV in there if you wanted to. DETAILS: - Open ONLY mid to late June through the end of August | Mon-sat 10am - 4pm. - $3 per child (adults 16 and up are free and children under 5). - Suggested age is 5-12 (I think for independent play), but okay for smaller kids ages 3-4 - Participants MUST wear closed toe shoes! No water shoes. - There are no lockers. The Nitty Gritty | What to expect, what to take. WHAT TO EXPERIENCE: - A dirt mud park! Simple as that. There is nothing fancy about this place so - leave your good shoes at home. - Muddy/ dirty water. Leave the goggles at home! - Mud Slide with muddy water pit. Adventure Playground has been around for as long as I can remember. I visited several times as a kid in the 80s. It looks exactly the same today, I appreciate that. Admission is $3 per child, adults are free. The staff consists of a few teenagers (who do an excellent job supervising!) and a man, all city employees. They have their act together, making sure every child and their parent hears the rules before going off to play. They do a really good job managing and running this place. There's a rope bridge, a tire zip line, a mud slide, some "rafts", and a tree house building area. It's not a very large place but it should keep elementary school age kids busy for a few hours. The boys from our group were completely entertained in the tree house area the whole 3 hours. The only bad: there's no real bathrooms or hand washing stations here. Their "office" is operated out of an old shed/shipping container so it's not really a permanent place with running water or electricity. They've brought in port-a-potties (ughhhh) so it's better than nothing, but be prepared. They have canned sodas, snacks, candy, and other items for sale (camera, batteries, towel rental) at kid-friendly prices. I'm kinda obsessed with these fruit shaped bubble necklaces they sell for $1 each. I refuse to fully grow up haha. Adventure Playground is a fun and affordable summertime outing for kids. This was a super fun place to spend a few hours for my girls. I will say the workers could have been more friendly, but all and all, from the stand point of an 8 year old.. awesome! Now, if you live in the San Fernando Valley... this may just be a once in lifetime thing. We left the house at 9:30 and arrived (it's a monday) at around 11:30. Parking was easy as the library isn't open till 1?!? (really?!) This means that you'll either hold it till then or have to pee in one of the two port a potties. You can't wear Keens. Thought it seems logical.. they don't consider them "closed toed shoes". I have left my kids shoes because they were gross and NOT something I'd make them wear again.. ever...Seems many have as you can borrow them. If you're good with that.. than you can enjoy the fact the ride home with your children will be comfortable and you don't ruin shoes. Some children find that impossible. Raft was super cool.. the mudslide was fun though the kids all said it smelled like poop. We only had one injury involving the wood (party of 14 kids ... (talk about a playdate!) that's good odds. We left at 2:30.. and the traffic was so bad... it was another close to 2 hours in the car. Was it worth it.. probably not.. BUT if your local.. ENJOY. Pretty neat. read more

Place seemed alright - the staff, while some seemed really grumpy, the other half seemed really bored. I'll admit though, I'm extremely surprised... Water shoes will get you kicked out of the park, but we give children handsaws and hammers and a bunch of nails? That seems really, really weird for me. Our group (though great for birthday parties) kept our children away from that side. There were some kids messing around and just wildly swinging these tools... no parent supervision on some of them, nor did the staff say anything. They sat on the bench eating pizza. I told the staff about one child in particular who screaming, "I'M GOING TO CUT YOU IN HALF" and slammed his saw on the edge of the wooden platform and started cutting through it. She said she saw him and she was going to do something about it... then sat there... and never did anything about it. The water slide is a small dirt hill with a tarp over it where a staff member will stand there shooting the tarp with a hose for 30 minutes, then it's closed for 30 minutes and the cycle continues. The paddle boarding is the most interesting thing there. You get to stand on a raft, in about one foot of water, then paddle around. There are random mini-potholes in the water so be careful where you sprint in there. I did have a good time and staff didn't bother me much because you don't really need to talk to them... but it seems silly to be kicked out for water shoes while giving children handsaws. Maybe it's just me... idk. They also had changing rooms which are literally just a wooden box (probably built by the materials used for the fort area) with no roof. BE WITH YOUR CHILD AT ALL TIMES. We've only been to one other Adventure Playground, the one in Seattle, and so I don't have a lot to compare this one to. That said, there seem to be an awful lot of rules and restrictions for an "Adventure Playground". Kids under 7 need to be hovered over, kids under nine can't work on one tree house, no climbing the trees, rafting is timed and when the time is over kids have to get off the rafts and walk out of the pond. The thing that kind of put me over was one guy with a bullhorn yelling at everyone to stop running. To be fair, we came on the very last day of the summer season, so I'm not surprised the staff seemed burned out. I am surprised they didn't make me sign a waiver, which might have helped ease some of the rules, but whatever. My kids are 6 and 10, and both seemed to have a fun time for a couple of hours. I like the idea of this place, and we'd be willing to give it another shot. I'd come with a larger group, because the building is more fun with more minds and hands collaborating. My son says he'd war his swimsuit and rash guard next time, because he was uncomfortable once he got wet in the pond. read more

I took my boys, ages 6 and 8, and a friend with her son, aged 6, to Adventure Playground today and it was fun but not the marvelous experience I was hoping for. My initial impression was that it was small. There is a building area, a mud slide, rafts, a rope bridge and a sandbox area. The kids spent most of their time in the sandbox. The building area is a neat concept with a huge pile of wood and a lady handing out nails, hammers and saws, if you are old enough. The mud slide is literally a piece of plastic on the side of a dirt hill, with an employee spraying a hose down the slide. The simplicity of it was kind of fun and I had no issue with it. The kids participated in each activity a few times then spent the rest of the time in the sandbox. We spent almost 3 hours there and that was more than enough time. I honestly don't think we will make the over 1 hour drive down again, but I'm glad we experienced it. read more

Upon arriving for the first time I almost turned around and left. It's pretty small, the "waterside" wasn't open and the rope bridge was gone and the forts they can build were really kinda stupid (its just a few raised platforms the kids bang hammers on). THEN, my daughter went to do the rafts..which I would imagine as a kid would be really fun. I then learned they open the waterslide every 30 minutes, for 30 minutes. Once they opened the waterslide I was sold. Now, let me warn you...it's not much of a slide. The kids have to scoot their bums down the tarp, however, the smiles on all the kids faces once they came splatting into the little water pond at the bottom was priceless.
