K and I were taking the dog for a walk and happened on this place. We decided to give it a try as they are very dog friendly. They have outdoor seating in front of the restaurant, but even better is they have private outdoor seating on the side that has a vine gazebo and is slightly protected from the road and city noise. The result is this simple dog walk became a romantic private dinner for the whole family + pup. We shared the Fasenbrust, pheasant which was amazing, juicy, and perfectly complemented by the leeks and apple mashed potatoes. I follow that up with a single Bavarian Weisswurst. It was also fantastic, pair with one of their German beers for full effect. We also shared their mozzarella salad, which I too would recommend. The apple strudel at the end was definitely not needed, but we knew at this point it would be fantastic so, "treat yo-self". The serving size was more than enough for two or three and I liked that it had a good amount of raisins and nuts in it. This is one of my favorite KC restaurants. read more

FINALLY made it to this place after wanting to ho for some time - happy hour with some friends recently. Loved the atmosphere and parking was easier than I expected. Everything we ordered was pretty great (I was surprised at how much I liked the rabbit corn dogs) - I loved the fried brie and the crab arancini in particular. Drinks were great as well, not too weak, not too strong. Our server was lovely - very helpful and attentive but not intrusive, even as we lingered well beyond "happy hour". One of the best bites I've ever eaten in a meal in my life, if I was on that show I barely ever watch *wink wink* The Best Thing I've Ever Ate this would be my vote for the seafood show. The entire 'Affare to Share' "Sea" interpretation for $28 was worth the four succulent scallops with the octopus jerky...yes, trendy weird jerky exists in KC! Underneath each scallop was a nice portion of horseradish mashed potatoes with a ghoulish green color to them, you'd almost mistake for wasabi. The rest of the appetizer plate was a blur in comparison to those scallops topped with that octopus leathery goodness but I do remember a cold salmon spread which was fantastically fishy! Coming in the summer months to Affare is celebration of Lobster season and I of course had to participate with ordering the Lobster Roll. The fresh seasonal addition of spherical watermelon with the sweet hunks of lobster and complimentary herbs was such a nice surprise. My boyfriend just HAD to order the filet with accompanying bone marrow. It was so rich, the marrow melted in your mouth and straight onto your waistline and the filet was cooked almost a perfect medium rare, but seemed to have rested a tad too long so the inside was a little over done. The same vibrant, alive mash as under the scallops and some green 'veg rounded out the steak meal. The cocktails also were memorable, especially the Hanging Gardens an herbaceous tequila drink with notes of celery. I also ordered a gin punch which was served in a festive silver overlaid glass mug. The cocktail menu at Affare seems to be seasonally ever changing with some unique light (not what I would expect German cocktails to be) drinks. The decor of Affare leaves something to be desired, it is starkly modern with those pretty-ugly black padded back chairs that remind me of seedy Vegas, granted I've never been to Vegas haha. Also, it was a ghost town during Happy Hour when me and my boyfriend were eating...which was sort of odd since that's not usually our experience with other spots around this part of town. But that being said service was spot-on and we had no problems receiving Happy Hour prices, with a small polite nudge once our bill came out since, I had specified with my reservations that we wanted to eat off the normal menu but have HH drinks and I was told it wasn't a problem. So, all in all service sufficed and got a thumbs up from me. read more

Tony was our server. He gave great suggestions and was very attentive & knowledgeable. We started with the charcuterie. Tony suggested a half order, which was perfect for two. We split a smoked spinach salad. This had a wonderful presentation and was also very tasty. The drumroll is for the entrees! Wow! I had the duck and my husband had the braised pork cheeks. If I described these masterpieces, it would not give them justice. For dessert, I had the pumpkin pie with fresh mint and chocolate chunk ice cream, at Tony's suggestion of course! I took my very best friend there for her birthday because she is of German descent. The atmosphere was very nice, a mix of calm, cool and high quality. At first take it seemed a little small, but when looking around you notice different areas and at least one other room. It felt intimate, yet spacious, and quaint. Their offerings are authentic, so the menu can be intimidating. We knew this going in and were excited to try something new. Our waitress was exceptional. She took the time to build a rapport with us and was very patient and fully knowledgeable about everything on the menu and OMG the wine!!!! Just stopped in for the first time for Saturday brunch before the holidays. It was the first dose of winter weather and everything was icy so the place was empty except for we brave souls. We immediately started off with the bottomless mimosas that lifted some of the haze from the night before and an excellent deal at $10. I went with the sausage trio with a side of potatoes and my friends went with the sausage burger and steak and eggs. Everyone was super happy with their orders. The brats were very flavorful and each one had a different texture. One was really smooth and another was very meaty. All of it good. Service was extra attentive since everyone else had cancelled their reservations due to weather but I'm sure it's good regardless. Don't expect wienerschnitzel, sauerkraut, sauerbraten, and bratwurst here, any more than you would expect old-time diner food in an expensive American restaurant. Don't even expect to find servers who know the correct pronunciation of the few German words on the menu. German food in the past 20 years has changed as much, if not more, than American food. This should not surprise, since Germany now has one of the world's most successful economies; and successful Germans have the money to support first rate European chefs. In fact one of the best restaurants in Europe is in Munich, with a chef who has become a TV celebrity throughout Europe. Nevertheless, I was somewhat surprised to find such an excellent modern German restaurant in Kansas City, since German small plates restaurants are not common in the US yet. This restaurant is one of only two in KC that receives halibut as the entire fish (they are big) and carves off slices in the kitchen. In short, Affare exceeded my expectations. They have only small plates. The equivalent of an entree in most restaurants would be two small plates here. Everything is very fresh, and the desserts are not to be missed. There is a small parking lot directly next door to Affare, which is across the street from the Rieger Hotel. The Rieger Hotel is on the west side of the street at the corner of Main with 20th St. Affare is on the east side of the street, between 19th and 20th St. The front of the restaurant is not particularly conspicuous, so you might not notice it. But it's there, and it merits a try, for sure. read more

Well color me impressed. I was having a bad day and wanted to treat myself to something fancy-pants, when the significant other and I decided upon dinner at Affäre. Typically out of our weeknight dinner price range, we had a Groupon burning a hole in our pocket, and decided that this modern German small plates restaurant was just what we needed. And what do you know? We were right! First things first, we ordered ourselves a couple of glasses of wine. The list is small, but well curated and quite reasonably priced, I'd say! We both ordered the Cotes du Rhone on the servers recommendation, and at $12 for a good sized pour, both of us were quite happy. I believe that was the most expensive glass on the menu, as well, with prices going down to $9 or so. They had an impressive list of handcrafted cocktails, but we stuck to the wine. Our server asked if we had been in before, and took the opportunity to briefly explain the menu. I didn't quite need an explanation of how small plates work, but he did come through with excellent recommendations of specific menu items. In fact, he was an excellent server all around, always anticipating our needs and was helpful without being intrusive. I believe his name was Josh. Josh, you are damn good at your job. Way to be. In terms of the food, the menu here is certainly ambitious, and most everything we had was excellent. We started with a ricotta and pea ravioli on a bed of pureed carrots. It was OK, but my least favorite of our selections (and incidentally the only one that Josh didn't suggest). It was fine, but I found it a bit too mellow. I like big, bold flavors, and I just wasn't getting it from anything here, and I had expected it from the cheese. Still, it was tasty enough. Next up was one of my favorites: bison short ribs and pate on a bed of pureed parsnips. The meat was incredibly tender and fell off the bone, and the gamey flavor was definitely upfront. Also, I was surprised at how much I loved the pureed parsnips, I can see them being a healthy alternative to mashed potatoes. I started off not caring for the slow roasted elk loin, as my first bite was dry. But after that initial bite, it was amazing! The bing cherries and sauce brought a tartness that complimented the gaminess quite well. I did, however, think the spatzle was bland, which bummed me out. I figured that was the most "German" thing we had, and was expecting better. Finally, we enjoyed the Seafood Allerlie, a combination of fish served on lemon risotto. The risotto itself was astounding! I would have destroyed an entire bowl of that. The fish that accompanied it was astounding as well, particularly the scallop. All were good, but I would have loved a meal entirely of scallops and that risotto. I will probably dream of it tonight. Lastly, we split a piece of dark forest cake. The cake itself was excellent, moist and flavorful. It bums me out, however, that they decided to pour cherry brandy on top right before serving. It changed the texture to something a bit more mushy than my liking, and I don't think it enhanced the flavor. The bites without the brandy were superior to those without. Still, a great dessert that I would order again. I have lived in KC long enough that I have sat in this room as many different restaurants and bars. I have to say that Affäre has done the best with the space. The dining room has fantastic art, including a very European graffiti mural. Also, there was a portrait of a man in profile on the North wall that I want in my living room. Watch out Affäre, I'm coming for it! There are two TVs above the bar, but thankfully they were turned off. Hopefully they soon disappear altogether. And finally, there are a variety of seating options, for groups large or small, in tucked away corners or right in the middle of the action, and for either dining or lounging for drinks with friends. This place deserves to be in any conversation of the best restaurants in Kansas City, and I hope that the community embraces them. They do everything quite well and deserve whatever accolades are bestowed upon them. read more

I'm really conflicted. I think that it's awesome that we are starting to get places like this rather regularly in KC, but at the same time, I always want a restaurant to know what it is so that I get the consistent message. Nica's often gets this complaint. I've always interpreted their wild and divergent menu as gumbo ya-ya writ large, but it confuses people, and that hurts business. So too the good word of mouth that got to me about Affare was "German food on small plates." That was enough. That was the idea. And then I get there and my favorite dish was the lamb tajine. That's a traditional *Moroccan* dish. And I have to say it was cooked and presented exceptionally, exceptionally, well. Everything else...was okay. I noticed in the reviews that some Germans have taken umbrage at questions like, "where's the German food?" but I'm sorry folks, if your take is "German" and there's a damn umlaut in your restaurant name, I don't expect the star of four plates that I order to be from Africa. I mean, if you want to consider the Nazi occupation of North Africa during WWII the connection to the tajine, okay, but I'm not sure that's what they are going for, is it? I had a sea-scallop with foie-gras and hollandaise sauce. Fine, not amazing. We had elkloin with spatzel, again, okay. We had an interesting salad with "edible soil" (made from shitake mushrooms, shaved almonds, and cocoa powder together with a hazelnut oil) that was visually stunning and plated well. However, the idea was better than the reality, as it wasn't the easiest to get the entire flavor profile of the dish in one bite, especially with the huge asparagus "trees." Cocktails were refreshing. Now, I eat out all the time so I have to confess I'm normally price-insensitive, but when I looked down at my bill I saw that it was $70 for 4 small plates and 2 cocktails. Am I spoiled by the standards set by La Bodega and Extra Virgin? Should I come during happy hour? Is there a happy hour? If there is a happy hour I'll come back and give it another try. read more

My boyfriend planned a somewhat of a surprise anniversary dinner here for us to celebrate four years. It was the perfect place to celebrate! Our anniversary fell on a Sunday, so he planned dinner for 5:30. While the weather was a little cool and gray, the space was fairly empty. It really added to the intimacy of the evening. He had planned out what we would get to eat. We ended up with the brat trio, which came with sauerkraut, red cabbage kraut, and brat potatoes. We also had the käsespätzle with ham and onion. This item is from the happy hour menu, but our server was very accomodating. It may have been due to the low traffic that time, but regardless we appreciated it. The highlight of our evening was dessert - the painted table! It truly is a work of edible art! We picked the quark cheesecake and apple strudel as our features. The work of art they create with various sauces, compotes, crumbles, and sorbets is amazing. Pastry chef Kyle created our table, and we loved every minute of it. I came here with a group of 9 for brunch on a Sunday morning. The place was nearly empty and there was a 3 piece strings group playing music in the corner, a classy touch. It filled up quite a bit later on, but you shouldn't need a rezzie if you're in early enough. Most of the table, child excluded, ordered the bottomless mimosas. Overall they were really good about refilling them with only short, intermittent periods of an empty glass. There apparently is no time limit on the tables, however, so it was never really an issue. All in all, a great deal for $10. Bottomless mimosas is enough to get me in the door, so great food just sweetens the deal. The food here was great. Our whole table really enjoyed it save for one person who is a self proclaimed sausage aficionado. I ordered the lobster eggs Benedict on German potato pancakes. I am a general fan of eggs Benedict, so I really love the little plays on the traditional dish that places do. Sometimes it's successful, other times not. Affare got it right. The hollandaise was really light and the eggs were poached perfectly. The potato pancake was a fun variation from an English muffin, and lobster really just took it to the next level. My wife got the burger and loved it. I thought it was a touch dry, but still good with all the interesting toppings. Our service was a little slow at times I think due to a lack of waitstaff. I had lunch at Affäre about a month ago and was really impressed! I ordered the Holstein Schnitzel and a Steigl Pils. The schnitzel was excellent, with a crispy and not greasy breading; served on delicious mashed potatoes that were creamy and potato-y tasting and topped with a fried egg, anchovies and capers. My meal also came with a basket of pretzel bread that was probably the best pretzel anything I've had in KC and a pretty side salad. The feel at Affäre is modern-posh, with wonderful service to match. My meal was $12 and the Pils was $6. It was a big beer so I assume that's why it seemed a little pricey, but in the end I wish I hadn't ordered it, because it was a bottled beer instead of draft and I really felt I could taste the difference. So, while I won't be having lunch at Affäre every week, I think that a delicious, filling lunch for $12 is worth repeat visits. read more

We went here for the once a year happening that Affare offers spargel, AKA white asparagus. I had it here last year and thought it was so different than the regular green asparagus and the taste was not like it at all. Spargel, or white asparagus comes from Europe, Holland, somewhere over there and it isn't seen around here much. Affare offers it once a year during the month of May. It's much bigger than regular asparagus and 2 stalks equals 1/2 lb. We decided to really enjoy it and order the full pound. It comes with drawn butter to dip into to. The spargel this year was good but, it still had some of the bitterness like regular asparagus does that I did not remember from last year. We enjoyed having it but be prepared to pay for it. It's basically $10 a stalk. For my main course, I had the Jagerschnitzel. It's basically a breaded pork cutlet with some mushroom sauce and some noodles beneath it. I opted for the sunny side egg on top as well. The pork cutlet was truly excellent. The pork was juicy and tender with a nice crust of breading. The mushroom sauce really went well with the pork and I really liked the bed of noodles as well. They were cooked perfectly al-dente. The only misstep on this dish was the egg. I was expecting a sunny side up egg as I know it. That means the yolk is a little runny. The yolk on this was not at all. To me that is a touch overcooked and it would have been so nice to have the egg yolk slowly drizzle over my pork cutlet. It's not a star killer though because the dish is very good. I wished I could have given this place that 5th star but there were a few tiny missteps. The first being they served us room temp water to drink. I had to ask the waiter to get some ice in our glasses to chill the water down. I don't know who wants to drink lukewarm water for a romantic meal? Not me. The second being the egg on my pork cutlet. Like I already mentioned, I just wished the yolk was a bit runny and it wasn't at all. This place is still a great meal and it's in a very relaxing, romantic, atmosphere. It was also nice riding KC's new streetcar to get here because it stops right in front of the place. read more

I am not an adventurous eater. I grew up in a house where rice was considered to be "one of those fancy foods" and vegetables consisted of carrots, green beans and potatoes. As I have aged, I have tried to force myself to try different foods but I frequently find myself heading for the chicken exit and ordering the menu item that most closely resembles a cheeseburger. So, while I was very excited to try this new restaurant, I was also a little bit nervous. The cool paint tones and contemporary fixtures along with the gallery-like effect of the local art on display combine to create a soft elegance that welcomes you immediately upon entering the restaurant. I was no longer concerned with what I would order, I was too busy perusing the art and enjoying the friendly atmosphere. Our first course arrived promptly and definitely set the tone for the rest of the meal. I ordered the Ricotta-Erbsen ravioli with carrot puree and balsamico foam and the presentation was beautiful! Each bite was a burst of flavor, perfectly combining the sweetness of the carrots and the fresh pop of the peas. I could have stopped right there and been very happy with my meal, but the best was yet to come. For my second course, the server recommended the Barham Farm Spring chicken roulade with Mangold and white clay potatoes. When he set the dish in front of me I was amazed. This was an absolutely gorgeous meal resembling a delicate birds' nest, complete with blue "robin's eggs." The very first bite proved that this dish was not just another pretty face! It was so fresh, so tender, and so flavorful! The sauce was an amazing compliment to the delicate meat and the small potato "eggs" simply melted in my mouth! The Cheesecake from the Rheinland was the perfect ending to the evening and again surprised my palate with it's light texture. This is not ordinary cheesecake but rather a sweet spongecake dessert that was just as beautifully presented as the earlier entrees. No detail was neglected. It was a beautiful meal from beginning to end. I will definitely return and try three new items without fear. A bit of adventure proved to be a good thing! read more

Affare is a small plates place, and adventurous use of game meats and other rarities are seen throughout their menu. They have an excellent win list with a German focus, and plenty are available by the glass. We had the following items: Seafood Allerlei with lemon risotto The lemon risotto plays perfect with four seafood items... scallop, shrimp, halibut, and salmon. Awesome. Elkloin, bing cherry sauce, Butterspätzle Lean, mildly gamey Elk is tender and perfect with the cherry tart/sweet, and richness of the spatzle. Peach and Mazipanrohmasse crusted Tart We could have eaten 100 of these. A perfect roasted peach half nested in deliciously rich, yet air almond crust. Black forest cake Yes, a chocolate cake.... but a damn good one! : ) The service was very friendly here and unobtrusive. Affare is a great place. Certainly, it will get better with time. They do need some more business by my viewing of the crowd there on a Wednesday. There is stiff competition nearby with small plates style menus. Just like it's name, Affare is located in the equally unique KC crossroads district! Step inside and you'll be transported to a beautiful loft-like area with low lighting and beautifully draped curtains. The menu itself contains a wide variety of local seasonal offerings. While some of the items can be a bit on the pricier side, they offer a great happy hour menu that is reasonably priced. From the happy hour menu, my friend and I decided to share a few items: fried chicken bites, fried brie, quark and pea ravioli, and garlic shrimp. Each item was delicious! The fried chicken bites were perfectly crispy and paired well with the spicy maple syrup accompanying it. The fried brie was rich and perfectly melted; however, the star of that dish was the apple compote that was paired with it. I couldn't stop eating it! The quark and pea ravioli was equally delectable. The balsamic foam added a great texture to the otherwise smooth pasta and carrot puree. The only problem my friend and I had with this dish was that it was a bit cold. Nevertheless, it was tasty! Last but not least, the garlic shrimp. This was probably the dish that least wowed me as you can find it at other restaurants. However, it was still delicious and cooked well. Overall, my friend and I had a great time here! The food was delicious and the staff was pleasant. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice place for date night or happy hour with friends. I came in alone. Sat quietly at the end of the bar and was looking forward to an amazing meal. The food was meh. The cranberry was disgusting. The entire plate was cheaply covered in greasy French fries. So gross to think tons of fry grease seeped into my meat. I was so grossed out. The atmosphere was less than impressive. The staff was eager to get me out because it was 8:30 pm. No suggestions were made. No upsell. No would you like desert? Another drink? Nothing. Do not go here. The only thing that tasted remotely German was the cucumber salad. The test was junk. I was not impressed at all. If I wanted a plate full of greasy French fries, I'd have rolled thru McDonalds and I would have had better service. Awful meal. Awful atmosphere. Awful service. The trifecta of awful. read more

I can't wait to go back! I would like to try lunch and HH, for sure. I would certainly recommend this place to anyone looking for a special occasion dinner, or just looking to indulge. The hubs and I tried it on a whim, when I decided staying in and warming up leftovers would just not do. We had been swimming all day and got hungry early, so we were the first patrons at their door. Literally. They had to unlock the door to let us in. Our octogenarian-style appetites worked in our favor as we didn't have a reservation and they were booked pretty solid from 6-8. But not at 5. The server was thorough, friendly and unobtrusive while also attentive. I've said it before and will say it again: this is an unfortunately rare quality for servers, yet necessary for an A+ service rating. She did this well. While we probably didn't need such detailed explanation of the menu, it gave us a chance to peruse and ask questions while she hovered. The one piece she mentioned I probably wouldn't have noticed was how each section (Garden, Water, Barn and Traditional) progresses from lighter to heavier. Well played, Affäre. Hubs and I split the Jägerschnitzel to start. It was piping hot and served atop delicious Butterspätzle. The mister got the elk for his choice and I ordered the scallops with foie gras and, my favorite of the Mother sauces, Hollandaise. When we were selecting a spot to dine, this was pretty much exactly what I had envisioned. It was executed perfectly--the sauce was balanced, the scallops were creamy and briny, the foie gras buttery and rich. I was happy. The four rather than five stars was one tiny element. I somewhat felt rushed out. They had mentioned a few times how busy it was expected to be later, so perhaps that was intentional. And in our server's defense, your 5:00 diners are not typically lingerers, and she may have guessed we were anticipating an evening movie or other impending plans. We had none of the above and likely would have enjoyed a digestif or two, had we been asked. Since we were not asked, we pranced ourselves across the street and hit up the bar at Extra Virgin. Your loss, lady. We could have racked up an extra $40 on our bill in a matter of moments. I guess it only cost her like $8, so I'm sure she was happy to move on. read more

I come here so much the staff recognizes me. It's just so hard to eat anywhere but my house with food allergies but this place is a dream. I don't get sick, I get to be included in a dinner out, and the food is so delicious. read more

Date night for the win! The beau and I decided to treat ourselves to a fancy dinner out the other night, and although we attempted to go to Lidia's we were fortunate and got another great option with Affäre. Our server, Kevin, was awesome and made some great recommendations, which I appreciated! I think sometimes servers are hesitant to call out one item, but his decisiveness was helpful - PLUS his selections were fantastic! My date ordered the pork shoulder roast, which he loved, but we were both dazzled by my dish: the Idaho trout. It was perfect in that the BF is from Idaho, and it didn't hurt that it was packed with flavor. Before we headed out to catch a movie, we indulged in a berry dessert. We've done curbside pickup and dine-in and both were outstanding. For curbside pickup we split the brat trio with sides of the spaetzle & cheese and the risotto with mushrooms & vegetables. Everything was delicious. We sat in the courtyard on Father's Day and that meal was even better. We split the white asparagus strawberry salad which was fabulous. My husband ordered the walleye with bacon, potatoes, & spinach which he loved. I ordered the weinerschnitzel with spaetzle & lemon star. Some of the best schnitzel I've ever had. Tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. During COVID-19 every staff member we interacted with wore a mask and everyone was very conscientious about cleanliness & social distancing. We felt very comfortable. The courtyard was very pleasant and the decor on the inside is modern & sleek. Looking forward to bringing family & out of town guests here. read more
