If you charge big boy prices, you need to provide big boy service. Sadly they're only doing one of these. I've traveled extensively in Germany and Austria. I would say the food here is German-ish or Austrian-ish. Maybe that's what the Kansas City market wants, but it is not authentic. Our waiter was an aging version of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures wearing a cheap Hawaiian shirt and chatting more than the old guy at the hardware store, to include pointing out things on your plate really closer than one should be to another person's plate. The spätzle was too thick and doughy, the Jägerschnitzel was served with a brown sauce that seems like just watered down Maggi, with about 3 small mushrooms. It lacked any depth of flavor or generosity of goodies you would expect. The much bragged about (by Ted the waiter) venison steak was overcooked. The apple-bread dumpling that the waiter chose to explain twice to us was meh at best. The decor is kind of pathetic for a culture rich in references from which to draw... a few poster art posters in red colors doesn't really scream upscale European dining... For over $175 for dinner for two with no dessert, I expected more. They did not deliver. read more

So, so, so happy because my husband chose Affare Restaurant to celebrate my birthday evening! It was truly an experience eating here, and it's the perfect date night spot if you want a quiet, cozy, and intimate dinner! Since my bday was on a Fri night, parking was a bit of a challenge in downtown KC, and I really suggest arriving at least 15 minutes early. As soon as we got in, the staff greeted us (all wore casual t-shirts matching the restaurant feel). The vibe inside felt modern and bit rustic with German-inspired articles displayed near the entrance and front side of the restaurant giving it an overall homely feel - nothing too basic and nothing very fancy. As we walked towards our table, I saw my free bday treat kept on the table - fresh apricot cream and blueberries dessert with a little "Happy Birthday" chocolate and candle. I loved seeing it right away instead of at the end, and it was perfect for a diabetic lol giveeeee me fresh fruit with cream any day!!!. The waitress greeted us warmly, went over the drinks and appetizer menu, and even wished me happy birthday in German - Loved the authentic touch. I was honestly mind-blown by the selection of non-alcoholic drinks at this restaurant - I was practically jumping with joy. They had everything from alcoholic and non alcoholic wines, beers to cocktails and 0 sugar herbal sparkling waters. I chose the herbal sparkling water, and my husband went for 2 alcoholic cocktails - Armchair Expert, which had cognac smoked to perfection with a rich flavor, and the Orange Boulevardier, a bourbon drink with an orange flair. Appetizer - we ordered the half charcuterie board, which came with a variety of cheeses from nearby farms, smoked pig liver paste, salamis, prosciutto, some pickled salad, German mustard, and house bread. The charcuterie board was fun to try because we got to explore different flavors, and the smoked liver paste was spectacular and my favvvv. I thought the house bread could have been better (were a bit dry and hard), but overall I was very happy with the appetizer. Soup - Igot a soup for myself called Suppe von Wald und Wiesenpilzen a vegan, tasty, hearty mushroom soup that will leave you surprised and make you wonder why creamy high calorie mushroom soups even exist lol. Main Course - I chose the Gegrillter Barramundi which came with perfectly cooked wild rice and mushrooms, and my husband went for the Hirschrücken unter Pekannusskruste - a venison steak with apple bread dumplings. Both dishes were very unique - the barramundi was grilled to perfection and beautifully plated over the veggies and wild rice, and the venison steak tasted divine with the huckleberry demi-glace bringing sweet and savory flavors together. To end this heavenly meal, we got the same dessert, finishing the birthday evening on a sweet note. The restaurant is also priced well for the fab dishes they have. One suggestion I would give is to have a chef accomplishments wall inside the main dining area walls, because when I went to the restroom I saw all the amazing certificates and news articles the chefs had earned. So I'm kicking myself for not making it here sooner! The hostess was Katrin one of the co owners. She was extremely friendly and made sure I was seated comfortably. I was looking for bar seating but turns out.. a table was better. Immediately when you walk in you see the entire restaurant. It's a very open floor plan which is very inviting. They have a bar towards the back and on the north wall a wine tasting bar. The aesthetic is chic because of the paintings, industrial due to walls and a few structures with a few rustic items too decorative placed around. There's also a colorful mural of Downtown KC by coat rack by the back bar. Mazee was my waitress. She was good. She helped me navigate the menu and answered my questions that helped me decide on my entree, wine, dessert and after meal coffee. She made sure I had what I needed and was timely with any request. Katrin checked on me a few times too. In between my meal and dessert, I checked out the private dining area used for events and their patio dining. Speaking with her I learned her husband was the head chef.. it's in the articles too. My dining experience was complete enjoyment. I definitely picked the right entree.. I love seafood and potatoes. The presentation of my dishes were intricate and beautiful! The Hummer Poutine with the lobster chunks atop the truffle fries, cheese curds and Madeira cream sauce was rich and extremely flavorful! Every bite was delightful! The cheese was melted enough to blend well in a bite and the lobster was tender. I stopped myself from completely eating it up because I had to try a dessert. I was torn between, the cake, the apple strudel and cheesecake ..in the end chocolate won out! Another winner, even with the cherries on the bottom. Interior was beautiful, comfortable seating, and great for a nice evening out. Chase was our server and was so helpful with suggestions as well as gave a beautiful history to how Affare came to be. I ordered the risotto (held the egg) and it was delightful! Just the right portion size, not too rich, and light on the lemon. Scallops and shrimp were perfectly cooked. My dining companions also loved their entrees as well. Definitely will plan a trip back! A small amount of street parking is available, otherwise plan to park in a nearby paid parking lot, $4 for 2 hours. Absolutely fantastic experience at Affare! Beautiful interior; the low lighting made the menu a little harder to read but they offered menu lights without prompting. We enjoyed our meal so much on Friday that we snuck in a Saturday night dinner as well. The first night, we did one tasting menu and chose some items from the regular menu and special. Second night, we mixed and matched some bar menu and dinner menu items. The tasting menu changes weekly so be sure to check out their website! Call out items: white asparagus soup, duck entree, garlic shrimp, bison meatballs, spinach salad Also loved the full list of NA offerings, including wine, beer, and zero proof cocktails. Was in search of a good German restaurant with Black Forest Cake and Affare was recommended, so we gave it a try Restaurant was nicely laid out. Small and cozy. Parking on the street. Staff was friendly and helpful. We started with the pretzel basket. Nice warm pretzels. Good way to start the day. We then had the veal schnitzel. They offer it 2 ways; Jager style which is with a mushroom sauce and butter spätzle or Wiener style which is with lemon, french fries and cucumber salad. We got a hybrid. We got it Wiener style with spätzle instead of french fries. The food was wonderful. The schnitzel was a good thick piece and was very tasty. The spätzle was the best we have ever had. For the main course this was clearly 5 stars. For dessert we got the Black Forest Cake. Forgot to get a picture. Presentation was nice. We have had Black Forest Cake in the Black Forest in Germany. That is what we were looking for. Unfortunately, this was not it. We could not find any cherries in the cream layers between the chocolate cake layers. This was just a chocolate cake with creame filling. It was just okay. This was only 3 stars worthy When I put the 2 together, I came up with a combine score of 4 stars. We ate here recently and found the food to be universally delicious. We began with the pretzel appetizer, served with their house made mustard and pickles. It was very good, though I could have used more salt! It's a bigger restaurant than it looks like, but the tables are arranged in such a way that it still feels intimate. Parking is an issue, so be aware of that. Their drink list is long, but our server was able to recommend pairings that she thought appropriate. The wine selection included some varieties that are harder to find in many restaurants but completely appropriate for the modern German food. The food was great, but our waitress messed up the order, giving the wrong kind of fish to one diner. She ate it- the barramundi- and still enjoyed it, but it wasn't what she had ordered. The other diner with barramundi was happy with her selection. My husband ordered the brat plate. While he said the sausages themselves were only fine, the sauerkraut, red cabbage, and two kinds of mustard that came with it was what really made the meal delicious. Having tasted, I agree. We were also under the impression it would be three different sausages on the plate, which was not the case. They were, however, nice and juicy. My bacon-wrapped trout with potato salad was good, but honestly the bacon is completely unnecessary to the dish, and perhaps pulled the quality down a bit. The strength of the bacon against the delicate fish and sauce wasn't enjoyable. The sauce went on top of the bacon, so a lot of it was lost to the taste of bacon- which was too bad, because it really was excellent. I liked the potato salad. Altogether a good dish, but it could use reworking. The service was an issue at one last point- we informed the server that it was my birthday at the beginning of the meal. She brought me a dessert menu, and said "It's your birthday, you have to have dessert!" Now, I certainly don't EXPECT free dessert for my birthday, but I felt the implication was there, and had one packaged to go. It showed up on the bill. I was blown away with my experience at Affare. I went in expecting a regular expensive upscale restaurant instead my party and I were greeted warmly by the hostess, to incredible kindness and guidance by our server (Kat/Cat), and most importantly to perfectly cooked, seasoned and crafted meals. The ambiance is really well designed, tables are far apart and give you and your group plenty of privacy as well as a buffer from louder groups. Such a perfect detail you don't see in most restaurants. The food is exquisite! I tried a bit of everyone in my groups plate, I've got to say the bacon wrapped trout really stood out to me however each dish was for lack of a better word perfect. And despite this being an upscale restaurant, I felt the portion sizes were very good, enough to satisfy my hunger which is notoriously insatiable. I ordered the Veal Tips and wow, so juicey, so tender, so well flavored with a savory, hearty mushroom brandy sauce. They also have an impressive drink menu featuring an extensive wine list. Can't recommend this place enough, great for a date, family, pretty much anything. Also have to give a shout out to the staff, truly incredible experience because of their thoughtfulness. Went for Sunday date night and sat outside in the courtyard- lovely setting that we had all to ourselves! The restaurant was very uncrowded, Sunday night seems to be the time to go. We LOVED the pretzel basket shareable, and the smoked spinach salad. We liked the lobster poutine and the venison, which was juicy and cooked to perfection tenderness. My Gingham Style cocktail was interesting (the term "salad-y" on the menu was correct), but I adored my mocktail, "Good Old Fashioned Fun", made with Bengal Spice tea- perhaps the most perfect fall drink I've ever had! My wife and I shared the Jäger Schnitzel with Butterspätzle. So good! Large portions and we were at a hotel with no way to reheat so sharing was perfect. Service was amazing! Service here in impeccable, my issue with dinner I last ate was actually dishes, now first of all let me lead with saying I'm hyper critical when I comes to food. The first dish was a pate that was a generous importion size that being said, the tiny triangle of bread that was severe to me to eat with it was not nearly enough, I stole bread off my husband app. Second dish Artic char was perfect! Rice and Romesco cauliflower were blah. The next dish lamb was good. The " duck fat confit" potatoes were NOT cooked at all practicality raw, and I'm sorry were not confit, nor was there ANY duck fat they were slightly streamed whole raw potatoes. We went to Affare with a group of four couples and were having so much fun that I neglected to take pictures. That being said, we tried many dishes and collectively loved the food. The restaurant is larger than I expected with roomy tables, a nice bar space, and great service. I have had German/Bavarian food before but this seems more unique and a bit more elevated. Luckily our waiter patiently explained the menu and gave us great recommendations. For starters, we shared the pretzel stick basket, beef tenderloin tartare, and lobster poutine. They were all delicious, especially the egg salad dip accompanying the pretzels. Our entrees were a combination of many but we passed them around and were lucky to try them all. My personal favorite was the veal tips with Butterspatzle. It is true comfort food! The venison Steak and Waygu KC strip steak were also delicious, especially with the potato croquettes. No room for dessert this time but we will return for the strudel. Overall, Affare is a nice place for a romantic date or a group of friends. The story: I have been learning German in Duolingo for an entire year nonstop. I told myself at the beginning of the journey that I would celebrate by eating a German cuisine and inviting friends to my Duolingo milestone party. Affäre in downtown KC was the obvious choice for this event. The experience: The vibes are immaculate. We had reservations for a random Wednesday and it had a steady pace of traffic. We were greeted immediately and sat at our table. On the menu: When celebrating a year of learning German, you must get the most notorious German dishes. We grabbed the brat trio, pork schnitzel, wießer spagel, and the hummer poutine. The asparagus was a limited time menu item delivered from overseas so that was a last minute add on. I'm not that familiar with German food, but I'm glad a fellow foodie couple introduced my wife and I to Affare in the Crossroads. Not sure why so many German restaurants resemble a Bavarian beer hall, but that doesn't describe Affare. It is truly "Modern German Dining." Parking can be a bit challenging. I'd suggest using the Streetcar which stops literally next to the restaurant. We started our evening with the Charcuterie, which includes deli meats, cheeses, house-made pickles and bread. Plenty of food for four. The Pretzel Basket was a fun second order. Affare has a decadent selection of soups. The Wild Mushroom and White Asparagus soups were savory and exquisite. These were highlights of the evening. Having never had venison before, I was a bit nervous about trying the herb crusted New Zealand Venison Steak. It was rich and not gamey. The Spanish Quail was somewhat bland and tasted a bit like chicken. The Kasesahne Torte was a tasty cheesecake made with Quark cheese mousse. I had to go with the Apple Strudel as you never can go wrong with apple-based deserts. Great food and location, but highly recommend coming a little earlier in the evening. I came by with my friend for Restaurant Week, and we were seated pretty quickly. I love how the place was dimly lit - it definitely had a date night vibe. As I wasn't too hungry, I decided to stick with the regular menu this time. I ordered the pork schnitzel for my entree, and can we just talk about the portion size?? The meat was tender, and the mushroom gravy on top was extremely flavorful. I was only able to eat a few bites because of how filling it was, so I basically had a whole extra meal left over. As I am weak for dessert, I asked if it was possible for me to order the same dessert that my friend did from the Restaurant Week menu, and luckily they said yes! The chocolate pate was so decadent that it almost felt like a second meal right there. Our server mentioned that this was only on the restaurant week menu, and I really hope that Affäre brings this over to their regular one! The only reason I knocked off a star was because I felt like we were being a bit rushed, even though we were only there a little over an hour. Wonderful food. Signs outside the restaurant said "modern German" food. We wondered what that meant. The menu included quite a few seafood options as well as a few game meats, such as boar and venison. I had a shrimp risotto that was absolutely delicious and my husband ordered the boar. It was served with spaetzle and a veggie - also quite good. We shared a salad platter for two as well. It was a very interesting way to present a salad and so good. I always glance at the rieslings when we find a German restaurant. I was pleased to see they had a dry (trocken) Riesling, not as common in the US as in Germany. It was a treat. We were lucky enough to find street parking right outside, however you may want to allow an extra 5 min to your reservation time to park. It's a cozy place with nice people working. We were seated quickly and had our drink order in a few minutes later. If you want to have just an extra bit of fun, I would suggest confidently ordering your food in German. None of us speak German so we butchered the words mercilessly. Have a drink or two, hang out and catch up. This may not be the place to go if you are in a hurry and need to get in and out. My aunt and I met at Affare for brunch about a year and a half ago. I love the intimacy of the atmosphere at this restaurant. I still remember and regularly crave the smoked spinach salad. For my big night out on a short trip home to KC, we decided to check out Affäre. I had Restaurant Week lunch there years ago but had never made it back. I'm glad we did. We showed up early for our reservation and parked at the bar until our table was ready. It was a smart move, because the bartender guided me to a Basque rosé that was utterly amazing and found an off-dry white that my neophyte wine-drinking daughter actually liked. Dinner was just wonderful! I had risotto with shrimp, scallops and smoked octopus bacon. I had to ask about that last ingredient since those three words seem completely unrelated to me. Well, they cut up octopus in little pieces and smoke it. It actually didn't add much to the dish, but the dish didn't need it! I don't think of seafood risotto as very German, but who's to argue with it tastes as good as it does? Son-in-law had Texas boar pork chops with mushroom gravy and roasted vegetables; maybe eating the last of the meat off the bones with your hands is gauche in a nice restaurant, but I didn't judge. My daughter had the cold-smoked salmon app as a meal and loved it (so did I). The desserts looked lovely but we were just too full. I've grown accustomed to eating outside down here in New Orleans and jumped at the opportunity, even though it was a warm evening. The courtyard here at Affäre is charming, and with the shade and fans, we were completely comfortable. Everyone we encountered was gracious and seemed genuinely glad we were there. The good: everything we ate and drank treated great, the ambiance was great, the service was fast and friendly, the reservation process was easy. The bad: my guest and i checked out the PDF menu on their website and knew exactly what we wanted before we went in. When we got there we were shocked to find that the item she wanted was not on the menu and every item was about 2x the price it was online. I was disappointed with the portion size as well Consensus: This was so close to being a place i can frequent, but tricking people to come in so they pay twice what they thought they would and letting them leave hungry isn't worth more than 2 stars read more

A modern restaurant with a German influence. The combination of good food and appealing atmosphere really made for a great dining experience. We stopped in for an anniversary dinner and had no trouble getting a reservation. Other than the name itself, you probably wouldn't even tell it is a German restaurant when first walking in. The modern interior design and throwback songs playing really is perfect for any occasion. We started off with the Hummer Poutine and it blew us away. It probably wasn't a good thing that we finished the large portion before our actual entrees. We ended up ordering the Risotto von Meeresfrüchten and Gebrantene Entenbrust (Duck). The Risotto was creamy and cooked beautifully, although a very dense dish. I personally loved the Peking duck breast, as the skin had so much flavor to it. This is a restaurant that can be great for a family as well as a date night. Parking is limited to street parking, but that's how it is with restaurants downtown. Definitely worth a visit. read more

So good. Just so good. Affare had been on my list for months and I never got the chance to visit. My Dad and I decided to go on a random night a few months back and boy did they not disappoint. The bartender made us some great drinks and had a strong knowledge of what they offered. We got sat at a table after getting drinks at the bar and dove into the menu. It all looked very unique and good. My Dad got a trio of artisan brats that were huge. He had to take some home! I ordered the seafood risotto. Their menu is seasonal, so this particular dish doesn't appear to still be on there, but maybe they'll bring it back in February of 2020. The waitress didn't recommend it over the other dish that I was deciding between, but I decided to go for it anyways. She came over to me a little while later and shared that the lady who ordered the risotto next to me LOVED it. Above and beyond to the waitress! read more

I am blown away about how kid friendly they were. When we arrived for our reservation they had kids cup, kids silverware and high chair ready for my 15 month old. They were so kind to her by multiple people coming up just to say hi. The food and waitstaff were both amazing. It was so nice to dine at a restaurant that felt like my child was also welcomed! read more
