If I had read these reviews prior to contracting work with this company, I would have listened to what people shared in these reviews and would have missed out on the opportunity to have excellent work done by Burns & McBride. This is a long review, but I believe it was important for me to put my experience into words. I live in Kennett Square in a beautiful large home and everyone who comes here to bid on work, doubles and triples the price of every job. Often, they obtain our address and look up the value of the home, then come back with a high estimate. Not with Burns and McBride. I was getting my oil changed for my car and I mentioned to a woman I didn't even know, that my hot water heater needed to be replaced and she told me you should call McBride and Burns. "they do great work for me" and she was very happy with the company. So I did, and they sent someone out free of charge to look at my hook ups. Prior to coming out they had already quoted me a price for the same hot water heater for a lot less than my current company, whom I have been with for 15 years - who also wanted $100.00 to evaluate the problem and it didn't go towards the hot water heater purchase. Burns and McBride came immediately to my home free of charge and by the next day, today they had scheduled for the installation to be completed. The day the work was performed it was a lot of slippery snow in my driveway. The two very professional and respectable installers, Calvin and Dominic, were local men from the area. They were so nice and professional. They came in got right to work and because of the snow and lack of access to the basement they had to hand carry the water heater in and the old one out of my basement. They put down tarps all over the floors and were very careful not to bump any of the cabinets or furniture. They were diligent and drained the tank that is there and hooked up the new one. It was a Friday night and they were in no rush to get home, it was evident their priority was to do good work and provide great service. I am a "talkative person and I ask a lot of questions." I asked them about their owners, as I always do and they replied without hesitation, the owner Mr. McBride is a really nice guy. I said "good." You can tell it was sincere. I like to know who I am doing business with and it's important to me about the owner of the business. Once they tried to leave the truck got stuck in my driveway and they shoveled the truck out by hand and put salt. It was late about 7:00 PM Friday night and they were in no rush to leave, each helping the other to make sure they were out safely as they each had a truck. Eventually we had to have the driveway plowed to get them on their way. Being a Manager with 100 employees, I was so impressed with them... now for the amazing part, they didn't take payment before they left, because the woman who worked there said I could pay them on Monday. Amazing price, superb service within 24 hours. This included someone who showed up the same day to take measurements. This was to date the best repair experience I had had in the 15 years I have lived in this home. This is our second year with Burns and McBride, and unfortunately, we are experiencing the same scheduling issues as last year. We contacted them because our air conditioner is not working and we needed prompt service. Last year, a representative repeatedly postponed our appointment after a date and time had already been confirmed. While I understand that arrival windows can be flexible, I would expect the technician to show up on the agreed date at a minimum. Both my husband and I work outside the home and had to take time off for the appointment. When the rep did not show, and we called to follow up, we were told they needed to reschedule, forcing us to take additional days off. We thought that the rep was not good and continued our business with them. This year, the pattern has repeated. We scheduled an appointment, they confirmed a Saturday time slot, and we waited. The rep never showed. When we called, we were told Saturdays are for emergencies only, and our appointment had been moved to Monday without any notice. We waited again on Monday, only to be told it was postponed once more to the following day. What makes this even more frustrating is that neither the technician nor the company took the initiative to call and inform us of the cancellation or delay. Every single time, we are the ones who have to call to find out what is happening. That is not acceptable customer service. When someone takes time off work for a scheduled appointment, the least a company can do is pick up the phone. We have been patient, but this level of unreliability and lack of communication is unacceptable when we are without air conditioning and losing workdays waiting for a service that never arrives. The worst company! I had a 30yr old. never a problem until burns and McBride did maintenance on it it never ran again bought a new heater from him for big mistake . The pump wasn't working first year. the third not working. They came out to service it for maintenance cost me $537.02 weeks later when it's 8° outside my heater broke again. Instead of calling them, which I should've never done. I called another company who told me the motor was installed incorrectly and could have started a fire. The pump was installed incorrectly and the screws to the heater were never screwed down. I'd never use them if anybody asked them I'd say goes as far away from him if you possibly can. I am a senior and handicapped. I'll never let him in my home again. read more

Our central air just stopped working on a Saturday in July. I immediately called B&M. They sent Ameer Watson out less than an hour later and he was great! Diagnosed our problem in 10 minutes - blocked drain line and water back up which tripped the auto shut-off switch. Fixed the problem and our AC was up and running two hours later. While there was an extra fee for emergency service coming out on the weekend, it was reasonable and certainly worth it! read more

So my elderly mother had Burns and McBride come out to look at the water heater because it wasn't working. The tech went in the basement and immediately noticed the switched was turned off, he flipped it back on and everything was fixed. Then he proceeded to hang out for an extended period of time only for my mother to end up with a 289.00 bill. I'm not joking when I say he literally turned the switch back on. The service call was 125 which is understandable, the extra 164 was completely unnecessary. This is a prime example of a company taking advantage of older people. We contracted Burns and McBride to replace our home AC/Heating Unit when we switched to gas. We had trouble with the unit in the first year following installation and after much back and forth we learned it was a lemon with rusting of major interior parts (maybe from sitting on a ship somewhere I'm port). Their technician that found this showed us and was horrified and apologetic this unit had been installed in our home by the installation team. The company had to replace the entire unit; thankfully it was under warranty as the company still gave us a hard time trying to fix the parts first to no avail. Now, less than five years later our second installed unit/air conditioning, in the heatwave of early September, stopped working. We had a technician out only to have it breakdown again less than 24 hours later. Now a weekend, we had a technician out again who offered a different diagnosis suggesting there was an issue with a major part of the unit. Burns and McBide wanted an extreme amount to cover the cost of the technician coming out on the weekend evening. They will cover the cost of the parts but expected a steep price for labor to diagnose and fix the unit. We believe that the unit shouldn't have major issues in only 4-5 years time and worry that we have another lemon which will continue to have issues. We have tried repeatedly over the last month to communicate work with Burns and McBride on a solution or compromise to the financial hit we are concerned about in addition to getting a working unit which we fully paid for. The employees taking our calls gave us Tom McBride's direct phone number. He however will not pick up and has not called back. It has been miserable for over a month without a working air conditioning unit. While o am hoping to still find a resolution to our issue in the immediate future, I would not recommend this company. They have been negligent in providing the services we paid for and the ghosting of customers in need when their products installed don't work is criminal. read more

Had water heater replaced today. We've been using B/McB for 30 years and never had complaints. Only One guy showed up to haul the old heater out and bring in the new. He left black stains all over the floors and stairs where water from the old heater had leaked while he was taking it out of the house. Said he had cleaned up the mess, But after he left I looked at it and the stairs and floor had black stains all over. A previous reviewer had raved about how B/MdB had spread a tarp on the floor and left their home spotless. I am fuming that my 76 year old husband and I are left to clean up the mess and that he considered that he had cleaned up. Am sending an email to the company right now insisting that they send someone out to do a proper cleanup. read more

Our hot water heater broke, on one of the coldest weeks of the year. I called a plumber I've used in the past, he apologized but told me he could not get there for a week. In the past when we had oil tanks, we used Burns & McBride for oil delivery & maintenance for 25 years? I decided to call them again. I left a message at 2:00pm, got a call back the same day, and they promised to send a technician out the next day. Water heater was installed at the end of their day. Our technician was a young man, Andrew, very thorough, knowledgeable, and respectful. You could tell he has received very good training from the company. He offered me a maintenance program, which I purchased, and before I knew it, I was getting a discount on the bill. We are very happy with their excellent service. read more

We had Burns & McBride install a new HVAC system last August. In April this year, the AC stopped working. I called them out to work on it, and the tech first showed up at the wrong address. He called me and gave me a hard time because he went to the wrong location. his attitude was annoying, but I figured we needed the system worked on. While working on it, he found the condenser was shot. He then started to lecture me on scheduling maintenance. Their company installed the brand new unit 8 months ago! When they came to repair it 3(!) weeks later, they showed up late for the job. We are a doctor's office, and they went to the back door and started pounding on the door until I came to open it. Instead of greeting me, the one tech just said, "Where is your thermostat?" I will not be using this company again as they are unprofessional, and the quality of the work seems shoddy. I would absolutely not recommend using this company for heating oil. They found a list of things to repair during my free heating inspection and used every scare tactic in the book to try and make the repairs. When I had a second opinion and told the second company that the prior inspection resulted in a list of repairs, they said "let me guess, burnes and mcbride?" My family member owns a heating and ac company. When he came out to look, he quickly realized that burns and mcbride incorrectly closed the boiler upon completion of the inspection so that the heat would not turn on. This companies values do not meet my standards of how a customer should be treated. I did contact this company after I quickly closed my account and voiced my reasons for closing my account and my experience. I was told that one of the owners would be calling. Need your oil furnace cleaned? They do a great job. Need your oil furnace repaired-me thinks NOT! They will send out a 'parts changer' - some one who has no clue what is wrong but will keep changing parts - and charging you - until it works again. The first time was a nozzle that was too small - they are the ones that put on the too small nozzle and they still wanted to charge me almost $300. I protested and they agreed. Second time they changed all sorts of things, charged $700+ when all that was wrong was an electronic module. Find someone else, These guys will rip you off every time. If you do use them, make sure they leave behind all the parts they changed out. Oh, their fuel oil prices are 50 cents a gallon more than anyone else. 'Nuff said. Follow up to owner comment. He and I emailed as he wanted my post removed since supposedly wasn't him. I still had original bill, from Burns & MacBride, and agreed to send him a copy. Haven't heard a word since. read more

My experience with Burns & McBride was a very positive one and one another note, my mother used them for 15 plus years with excellent service. I'd give them zero stars for their trash service if possible. I signed up with them the second week of June 2016. I was assured that they would cancel by existing service with another trash company and pick up my trash every week. Since then They have missed my trash 5 times. On top of that, they never cancelled by existing trash service as I was told by the same company that only I could cancel it. So I now have a $150+ trash bill with my old company, plus I have already paid Burns and Mcbride for 3 months plus a pro-rated fee. When I asked if they ever canceled my service, they said they did until I called them out on it. They won't pay for the existing trash bill and when I complained about the missed pickups, they offered a 60 dollar credit. A credit is useless if you don't come get my trash. Avoid this company for trash pick up at all cost. The low cost isn't worth the headaches. read more

Very poor trash service....never knew if they were going to actually show up or not. Finally we had enough and cancelled service. We were told we would get at full refund from the quarter we paid. They charge a lot for a service contract and it doesn't cover anything except to check the heater yearly. Then they always find major problems. It is an extra cost to check AC. They seem like a good company, I just had a bad experience with them. They used to have door to door saleman come around EVERY summer offering "super exclusive" neighborhood deals and say it was exclusive to OUR neighborhood, it wasnt...they did the same trick in everyones. All they wanted to do was offer a SUPER low "promotional" deal to take customers from waste management and the others. Longstory short i didnt switch then because the door to door salesman annoyed me. But i kept the offer slip. Then one day Waste Management messed up bad and i wanted to switch. I called B&M and a guy with the last name McBride told me he wouldnt honor my promotional price even tho i had the written offer from the saleman that NEVER expired... We've been using Burns and McBride for over 8 years for all of our heating and cooling needs. They've done some big jobs for us, including converting our oil heating system to gas, replacing a hot water heater and air conditioning unit. For the bigger items, we have shopped around and always end up going with Burns and McBride. Their prices are fair and their service technicians are on time, friendly and get the job done. read more

I would stay away from them. We Burns and McBride replace our furnace and air conditioning units. The price was competitive and they are a pretty large company so we took a chance. They ended up sending out a completely inexperienced young technician to do the work. He did such a horrible job that we had to have them out 3 more times over the next few weeks to fix duct work that was falling down and water leaking from the air conditioner and humidifier. Even their own technicians were shocked at the low quality of the installation. It was a mess. Also make sure they are up front about their warranty. They offer a long 10 year warranty but to get it you have to sign up for their yearly maintenance service. They want to charge us over $500 per year for that service. A complete rip off that they do not tell you up front. The work is low quality and the warranty and service are not very good. I would just stay away! read more

About a year ago, a young "struggling student" type person knocks on our door and offers us trash collection services with Burns and McBride for a bet less than what we were paying at the time. So we switched. Last month I get a letter from them saying that Waste Management had taken over their accounts and billing would be from them from that time on, but our rates would remain the same. Then we get an invoice from them charging us for cleaning out our bins, which was part of the service when offered a year ago, at no charge. Then, today, I get a bill from Waste Management and they are charging us a LOT more for the same service. Bait and switch gets old, especially when you are on a fixed income. Awful, awful, awful trash pick-up division. We have been customers of Burns and McBride for many years...HVAC and trash. We have contracts for service and have automatic billing for trash. Over a month ago, they stopped picking up our garbage for no reason. After MANY phone calls with assurances that they would be back out, we still have no pick up service. I arranged for another company and called B&McB today to alert them to that fact, to come get their trash cans and to ask how to get credit for our missed service. I was transferred to the new company that handles their waste management and they said that they can do nothing regarding a credit for lost service since they just assumed the trash routes as of two days ago (in essence, I'm not their problem). ...another call to B&McB...they'll figure it out and get back to me. Is there a snowstorm predicted for Hell???? Chances are, not likely. What is happening with the formerly reliable institution? So sad that B&McB has gone downhill so rapidly. PS...later the same day, Betsy said that we would receive a credit which will linger on our account until we can use it up. At least somebody there has their act together! read more

Horrible customer service! The techs,oil delivery persons and the woman who answer the phones on the weekends are good people with more care then the "persons" in the office that normally handle the day to day calls. The service contract was not explained properly to me so when deliveries started to come barely 20days apart and my credit card was being charged everytime without me being aware I started to get a little irritated ( over $700 in less then a month). Needless to say I was very upset. Apparently if your a "new" customer the contract "apparently" indicates that you must have automatically delivery (whenever they see fit to come and deliver oil as often as they deem) and then charge your credit card (apparently I guess being billed is not allowed either). The woman who handles the accounts was not helpful and honestly I didn't appreciate her lack of care about me being dissatisfied with my service. I would not recommend this business. read more

They told me that the reason I should choose them is because of their excellent customer service and 24 hr. emergency respond. Well, the price of their oil is about 2 times higher than most companies out there and they keep reschedule the maintenance at the last minutes. I have been using this company for our heating and air conditioner service for years with no issue, until this week.dealing one one of big bosses. The Air condition they serviced does not work and they claimed they did the work with no guarantee and collected payment. About 2 weeks ago, a "gentleman" by the name of Grant Callahan was going through my neighborhood promoting Burns & McBride trash recycling services. I signed up for the service for $75/quarter, however after reviewing my current trash service provider, my quarterly rate is about $20 cheaper than Burns & McBride. And just over the weekend, I had these trash cans delivered to my home with "Waste Industries" labels on them. So this morning I called Burns & McBride to cancel my service, which has not started by the way. I spoke with the manager to cancel and he tells me that they cannot cancel the service because it is a "state law" in Delaware that there is only a 3 day rescission period. When I questioned this "law" and that there was no disclosure in the documentation I received, he then says that the was going to contact Waste Industries to have my account canceled. After about 2 minutes, he gets back on the line and tells me that if he cannot have Waste Industries refund my $75, they would cut me a check and cancel my service. I would recommend not doing any business with Burns & McBride just off the basis of false advertisement, non-disclosure and just outright lying just to make a sale. read more

Use another oil company! We started using Burns and McBride about 3 months ago. Our initial oil cost per gallon was $3.49. About 5 weeks later they came and filled up our tank and charged us $3.99 a gallon! I was not happy. I called and they gave me some story about gas prices increasing (although gas prices were dropping everywhere else). You think that I would've learned my lesson, but sadly I didn't. I had them deliver more oil and this time the rate was $4.59 a gallon! Needless to say I will never use their service again and I suggest that you do not either! Do not enter into a contract, rather call around and get the best price that you can or you will get ripped off like Burns and McBride likes to do. read more

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY FOR ANYTHING. They are the worst. I switched a few years ago to Burns & McBride because of a special rate they were offering our neighborhood for Trash Collection. Their service is awful, Oil prices are too high and service is not that great, not as great as they think they are. The office people are snooty. Needless to say My experience was a bad. High prices. rotten service. Many of my neighbor's cancelled out and when I had enough of them because I cancelled right after they billed me via Debit, I decided to cancel. Since they were already paid they are now refusing to give me a pro-rated reimbursement. in fact, it was never even offered to me. The payment is due the end of the month however, they take their money 10 to 15 days before it's due. This is how they treat their customer's by taking money from senior citizens who are on a fixed income, what a disgrace. I would urge all people who may be thinking about going with this company to think twice. They are the worst. read more
