I was in the area and just had to stop in AGAIN for there Stew Peas. About a month ago I came hungry not sure what I was in the mood to eat. There Stew Peas caught my eyes but the lady behind the counter almost didn't want to sell it to me cause there wasn't anymore meat in it. I told her I was fine with just the stew. It was so so good (flavorful) like my mom makes. I enjoyed every bite. I love that they cook it the traditional (in my opinion) Jamaican way with pork (pigtail) in it. The oxtail was not the normal diameter; it was cut in half or one normal piece looks like it was cut to make three pieces. I will not be back. I spent over $40.00. My actual rating is about a 3.5, but I'll round up because I *really* like their patties - both the beef and the chicken. They have great flavor, great spice level and at $3 a piece are a great value. If you follow my reviews you'll know that curried goat is my favorite dish of all time. Not gonna lie, I wasn't super keen on the curried goat here. It wasn't very spicy at all, and just didn't have the "flavor intensity" I am used to. It's not bad by any means - and if I didn't know just how amazing it CAN be, I'd have liked it just fine - but not loved it. The portion was very generous, the rice & peas and veggies it came with were good. But the patties are SOOO good, and since there are so many good places to get my curried goat, I'm going to be coming here primarily for the patties. Hubby had jerk chicken that he also thought was too dry on the first visit. The sides get a little dry sitting in the containers behind the counter; on my first visit I had some mac & cheese for a side - not a good pic, it gets very crunchy when sat too long. Today, I went in for a chicken patty and fried plantains - the chicken patty was awesome, loved it - the plantains were a little on the dry side. If you need food fast, it's ready made - but the dryness is a trade off. One thing to note if you're ordering just patties - there is a $10 minimum to use a credit card. Fortunately I had cash with me today, or I'd have been S.O.L. (or had to get something else to bump the price up over 10). read more

I was having a craving for Jamaican food and saw this place while out so I decided to stop in. I really, really wanted to like this place....I decided to get a few things to try and split it with my dad. I bought 2 salt fish fritters which were flat and long. The cashier put them in a brown paper bag like they do patties. I also got a small saltfish and ackee with plantain and fried dumplings and a small oxtail meal with rice&peas. The drive home was about 30 minutes. When I arrived the inside of the bag was coated with grease. I lifted out the brown bag with the fritters and it literally dripped with grease! They went straight into the garbage because I already knew all that oil would turn my stomach. I sampled the saltfish and ackee and it was mostly ackee with a few small pieces of saltfish worked in. That was really disappointing. The worst part was the oxtail meal. I've been craving oxtail for a while since I haven't been able to go visit my aunt and get that good,back home cooking. The flavor of Nice n Spicy's was actually good. The rice was a bit bland but the cabbage was spot on. No where near as good as my aunt's but definitely satisfying. Then 30 minutes past and I was running to the bathroom. After 2 bouts of diarrhea I thought it was over but I woke up feeling sick and bloated the next morning. My dad never tried any of it (thank God). Eat here at your own risk. If you're looking for good Jamaican food just go to the Jerk Pit in College Park. read more

I usually get beef Patties and jerk chicken but today the jerk chicken was horrible. It was rubbery in texture and more like baked chicken. Very unhappy with this meal today for $14. My son wanted to treat me to a place that he found online, there is no way in hell he read the reviews and he knows that I don't play games when it comes to my Carribean food!!! When there is limited West Indian restaurants in the area, I guess you can increase the prices. Had to go back to Jamaica today. So I took two coworkers with me. One was from Kingston. We had a great meal. The sisters had oxtails, which my Kingston sister swear was as good as her momma's with steamed bananas, white yams and potatoes and greens. She said they were very tasty. The other sister had brains and rice and cabbage. The dumpling was very well done. I took on the curry goat which was tender and just the right spice. My sides are greens and cabbage. I appreciated the fact that unlike some restaurants the oxtail was mostly meat and not a whole bunch of fat. Everything was great and I got a beef patty and coco bread. I tried the small brown stew chicken with rice and peas. It was pretty tasty. The prices seemed fair for the amount of food you get. This place is a take out style of restaurant that has a small dining area. I was happy that I could buy packs of tamarind balls right off the counter. I have tried a few Caribbean places in Montgomery County and I have to say that Nice N Spicy stands above all of them. The portions were very generous. I had the ox tail stew with rice n peas and cabbage. The sides were delicious. By far the most flavorful cabbage I have had from a Caribbean eatery. The rice and peas were delicious as well, possibly because the nice lady poured some of the sauce from the ox tail onto them. The ox tail stew was delicious. The meat literally fell off of the bone. The stew was flavorful in a savory and sweet kind of way. I was craving Carribean food and this was the closest location to me. I know this place has been around for years. Its been a while since I have gone and there is probably a reason why. The inside needs to be updated. I understand hole in the wall places, but it also doesn't need to look like a hole in a wall. The food displayed looked dry and needing to be stirred once in a while. Don't let me get into the mac and cheese that had crusted over. Since I already had my heart set, I still ordered the stewed chicken and curry chicken. I also got coco bread. Now I must say, they do give you alot of food for the price, but if the food is mediocre, then it doesnt matter. The stewed chicken was just ok. The meat fell off the bone but it lacked flavor. Food was very lukewarm and I fear also old. Most of the food looked like it had been sitting out for a while and I suspect very little on their menu is actually made to order (I would at least expect eskovitch fish to be made to order, not sitting around in a tray. Fish was also very lacking in flavor). Portions are plentiful but doesn't make up for overall lack of quality.
