I very much like certain Caribbean dishes - Jerk Chicken, Curried Goat or Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken, Ackee & Salt Fish, Stewed Turkey Necks, and most of all, Oxtail! I have eaten at Da Ragge, La Palma, and Calypso Mama in Greensboro, Dixon's Jamaican in Burlington, and a few others. In this area, I've tried Outta D Kitchen, Ah Fiwi, & Taste Jamaica in WS. I finally got around to trying this spot a few times, which has been around for a while, the oldest Yelp review was over 16 years ago. They have received just over 2.5 reviews a year, but somehow are still here. I ordered the Oxtail, a favorite - called in the order, based on Yelp reviews this seemed the way to go. On another occasion I tried the Curry Goat. The Oxtail and Curry Goat were very good, tender and flavorful, and the serving size was reasonable. On one visit the cabbage was well seasoned, but rather bland on the other. The rice and peas were just ok, and the plantains lacked softness and sweetness. I almost certainly come again - I want to try the Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken, the Pepper Steak, and for sure the Turkey Necks. read more

I've been craving Jamaican Oxtail for a while and finally got my fix today! I called in my order and was kindly greeted by a staff member on the other end of the phone. They took my order, asked my name, and told me when to expect my order to be ready. Yeh Mon's is located on lockland Ave. just off of Silas Creek Blvd. Its bright green and yellow store front confirms you're in the right place before you even read a word from the sign. I waited the exact amount of time they told me before going inside. I walked into a tight, but bright carry out area, which can only hold maybe 2 people at a time. If you do a walk-in to-go order, you should probably wait in your car after ordering. I was greeted and asked if I had a picked up order and was asked my name. The food was ready when I arrived, and I paid $25 for 1 oxtail plate. Considering how much oxtail are in the grocery store, this is a deal for not having to prepare them myself. The food was still piping hot when I arrived home 20 minutes away. They gave generous serving of oxtail (about 5-6 pieces). -The oxtail and its gravy were flavorful, and the meat was super tender and filling. The best I've had since Rhythms closed. -The cabbage was flavored well but was a little too salty. The rice and peas were bland. It didn't taste like they cooked it with coconut milk like I've had from other jamaican restaurants. Overall, the great customer service and excellent oxtail earned them 4 stars. We found this spot while driving through and hubs was ravenous for some Jamaican food. I'm not the biggest fan myself. Not sure if it's the spices used but it's never been in the top 10 fave cuisines for me. We are vegetarian so I can't speak to the meat options. I saw veggie patties on their menu photos on Yelp but they didn't have any when we called. Nor did they have them listed as menu items at the actual place. Oddly enough, I noticed a fish dish listed on their vegan/vegetarian menu. So there's that, and hubby was highly disappointed since the patties are one of his favorites. They do have a rice and peas (beans) plate with cabbage. Hubby said it wasn't bad but a little soggy. Our toddler ate it which means it had to be pretty good since the little people are notoriously picky. I have been looking to try something new with my lover and was recommended to try this spot out...well I am sooooooo happy we found this place to say the least.My love had the jerk chicken and rice which was "absolutely delicious"he says .i had the chicken patty with coco bread and that was a hit! So satisfying!! Also we ordered the sour sop and fruit punch drinks and the strawberry cake and oh my gosh!we just can't get enough!it is so dang good!!! I'm from Massachusetts and even been to Jamaica where even the hole in the wall spots there tasted like gourmet and was desperately looking for good Caribbean food down here. This place is really unique. It doesn't look like much from the outside. It didn't catch my eye, but a friend and I decided to try it as we were roaming around Winston Salem one night. It's very small and there's no fancy signage at all. When you enter, you find yourself under sparse lighting, and it feels a bit confined. The room is basically an L-shaped area inside with tables and booths lining the walls. At one end of the L are restrooms and at the far opposite end there is a radio playing world music. There are many, exceptionally large potted plants lined along the center of the floor. It was pretty empty when my friend and I went. I have to say that I wasn't sure about the place. I wasn't sure I would enjoy it and honestly, after we ordered, I had a slight moment of panic that maybe they wouldn't except a credit card. However, my lacking faith proved completely unfounded! We ordered a single dish and shared. We ordered this shrimp, fish, and rice dish that we thought would be rather big ($15) Of course, the name of it escapes me, but it was quite large and absolutely amazing! One sort of funny aspect to our visit was how the waitress (who was super nice and helpful by the way) kept complaining about how hot it was in the restaurant. This was very odd, as it wasn't hot. Wait time for lunch and we were only one of two small groups (not busy) was really long. It took 40 minutes to get water and the appetizers. the meal came after 1 hour in the seats. Definitely not Dine-in friendly. Other that the ridiculous wait time, the food is amazing. I ordered the Curry Goat Stew and it was the bomb-diggity. This place is really chill with an island feel inside with island inspired deco. We stepped in the door and was greeted by the cashier which was really cool. People say they are rude but they aren't. They are really family like. You have to pay for your food before you sit down. They have had customers that run out with out paying so make sure you check in first. Food was amazing. Dining room is still closed which we weren't ready for but we got food anyway. Prices weren't listed which feels a bit sketch so be prepared for that. The presentation as well as the portions were great, as you can see in my photos. But I have had my fair share of caribbean food, specifically cooked by people who hail from the islands and "bland" is a word that should never be in the same sentence as anything authentically "jerk" or "curry". This was Bland Central, only slightly tastier after the leftovers were heated up later on that night. I had the jerk chicken dinner plate with cabbage and rice/peas (red beans to us Americans) as the sides and my brother (no relation) had the same thing except with curry chicken. No kick, no boldness, nothing to make me pause and savor the flavor, just...meh. So even though everything else (even the cutie bathroom) was a pleasant experience, both dishes were an utter disappointment and I don't care how nice the place looks or the people are, it's the food that ultimately makes or breaks a restaurant. One thing's for sure, I became immediately nostalgic for Spices here in Jacksonville and MP's in Norfolk; now THEY haven't forgotten where they came from and it's evident in everything they serve! I grew up in the Bahamas (10 years) so my take on good Caribbean Food is a little different than most. My wife and I stopped by for lunch yesterday. The service was on Island Time which was OK because we were not in a hurry and the atmosphere was very comfortable with reggae music playing in the background. I had the Curry Goat and my wife had the Jerk Chicken. Both were very delicious. The cabbage and rice & peas side dishes were a nice offset to the spicy dishes they came with. We each had a Pineapple soda to drink and shared a beef patty as an appetizer. I joked with our server and requested an order of Conch Fritters, she just laughed.... There is no conch on the menu... Total including tip was $25.00. Well worth the quality and portions of food received. I will go back when I am in Winston Salem. read more

This place is ok. The place my boyfriend & I tried first was Da Reggae Cafe in Greensboro. That place ia GREAT. We crave Jamaican/Bahimian food a lot especially since we've had the food when we went on a cruise. Since we heard of this place in Winston, we decided to try it. It doesn't have enough spice do me. I got the Oxtails but it waa more on the sweet side rather than spicy. My boyfriend got the Jerk Chicken which is loves. He said its the perfect amount of flavor for him. He was a greedy butt so he didn't share. We're going tonight so I will get the Jerk Chicken, he's going to try the curry chicken this time. I vow to never get the oxtails from here again. read more

Really unique restaurant. Haven't had Caribbean before. This was my second time and I recommend that if you like your food spicier, ask for that. I mention this as I noticed a someone commenting that it was bland. They tone down the food for the average American palate. I had the sweet and sour chicken (DELICIOUS) and the fish flamae (good but needed to be spicier, I plan to try it again with that request in mind). They should let people know before they order that they will have to wait at least 20 -30 minutes however the oxtails were juicy and tender . Very good and the lady up front was wonderful she was trying her hardest to get the food out. I think if the kitchen staff had more urgency it would be perfect . So my fiance and I went to Yeh Mon yesterday. TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT. I'm originally from up north and use to AUTHENTIC jamaican food especially living in New York. First, we had to call several times before anyone picked up the phone. Second, I placed the order at 5:15pm and looked at my watch which said almost 6pm and still no food. So I go into the restaurant to check on the food and my order still wasn't ready. I waited a little longer and ended up leaving because they were so slow. I was saying to myself did they have to go to Jamaica to kill the chicken or something. I never got my food because I got tired of waiting so I took my business elsewhere. Also, to add insult to injury people were coming in to pick up their orders and they couldn't even get the prices right. Come on Yeh Mon get it together. Also, I've NEVER waited no more than 5 mins for jamaican food. This restaurant needs to close down and start over again with a new name and a new owner. Horrible service, horrible attitudes, mediocre food, and I was overcharged. The lady that overcharged me was rude and then the lady that came to refund me was also very rude and disrespectful. When she realized she also messed up the order by giving me extra cabbage she was about to take the cabbage out of my Togo container and put it back until my friend offered to pay for it. In fact, I am being very generous in my review, because today, I got the goat curry, and it seemed like it had been there all day; the flavor, well, it was very "bland" as one other reviewer put it. And the goat meat itself, it did not taste fresh; it tasted as if the goat had been prepackaged beforehand and my stomach, about 30 minutes after and for about 2 hours, was not happy. Regardless of this very unpleasant experience, I will still give this restaurant two stars, for now, because the service was friendly, the restaurant seemed clean. Maybe I caught them at the wrong time and it was once in a while thing, still, that shouldn't be acceptable for any restaurant.
