I had a $15 gift card for one of the food delivery services. I think the person who gave it was thinking coffee but I was thinking, who gets coffee delivered? I forgot so about the card until someone asked me if I used food delivery companies. I loved them in the past but had some odd experiences. Nevertheless since I was in TX and not familiar with any of the local restaurants I decided to pick food the person I was with had never tried. After researching several options I landed on this place. I ended up ordering several items so I could get the person to try a variation and so I could get a good idea of their approach and how they prepare specific dishes. Especially in the DFW area. I'm American but have worked in parts of Africa in the 90s and lived in NY and the DC areas. I'm from CA and it took much longer for West African food products to make it west. I ordered over $200 worth of options. The pricing made me change my mind on 3 different occasions on separate days over 2 weeks. I then justified by thinking, that if the portions are fair I food freeze items and/or eat leftovers a few times with the spices marinating and getting better. Overall, I was very pleased. I've attached a photo of my receipt and food. I wish they had placed more of the spicy pepper paste being that in every note, I wrote spicy or extra spicy and there wasn't an option for condiments. Some of the pieces of meet in the dishes were sparse or just the fat. The pieces of goat in the curry, egusi, and okra could have been cooked longer but the flavor of all three dishes was delicious. The person who had the food for the first time enjoyed the spices but their expressions when asking questions related to each item, were hard to decipher. They don't have a mature palid and stick to what they like (bad food) for over 50 yrs. When I brought habaneros to cook with, they had no clue what they were, even though their mexican salsas said habanero was in it but the peppers on the bottles were not habaneros. The added rice with the dishes was very good even though I bought the jollof rice as well. Having both was smart. Again. I wish I had more African pepper paste The person I was with LOVED THE PLANTAINS.. T wasn't surprised. They were ripend and cooked to perfection. I had to hide them so when more food was being tasted the focus would be on the others. I was right about having leftovers and nothing went to waste.I even served the rice with fish dishes I prepared later in the week. Yes, I would choose this restaurant again!!! However, I think I'm going to drive there and order to see if the portions are the same and if I'm saving any money. Oh, I forgot to mention that the restaurant did and excellent job of packaging the food abs placed all bags and containers in a box. There was only one container that had saran wrap that leaked due to it being squashed and cracked. The way it was wrapped.. saved the dish!!! read more

Amazing food. Great service. Easy parking. It was my first time at African Village. I will definitely come back. I was craving that rich flavor meal I grew up eating. I for sure got that. Egusi was amazing. It came out steaming hot. It was painful waiting a few minutes for the food to cool down because I wanted to eat it right away. But it's not good to complain about food being too hot. There was ample seating. The server was attentive and courteous. When I walked in there was a black cowboy riding a Rodeo on TV. So assume this may be a great place to watch sports and eat. Make sure to order an Indian Malta with your food. There was a wide variety of food selections on the menu. Finding Eru around town is hard, so naturally I come get my fix at African Village! But all in all, I always have a pleasant but quick exchange with the staff, music is always blasting on the speakers, there is always a random group of guys having one type of meeting or another, the food is always spicy and I always leave full and happy! I've never had African food before and this was not what I was expecting. Very inviting flavors that are still rich and delicious. The stew tasted like a consomé and the goat fell of the bone. Very similar to a birria flavor with a little bit of a twist. Definitely would have this again. read more

Location: This restaurant is nestled into the little shopping strip next to "Texas Thrift" in Irving. Their sign does not light up, so it may be hard to see in the evening. They had their "Open" neon sign off, and it was hard to see if they were open through the windows from the parking lot due to all their signage posted along their windows. Don't let this hinder you from giving them a try! Try the door anyway! Atmosphere: Ad soon as we walked in, we were greeted by very loud music. If you do not enjoy loud music, this could be overwhelming for you, but I enjoyed the fun atmosphere it created for me! The music was very upbeat, had a great bass to it, and was rich with Congolese influence. I think it added to my dining experience tremendously (in a very good way!) Service: We came on a Friday night at 6pm, in a party of 6 (4 adults, 2 babies). There was 1 waitress and 1 cook. The waitress ran the register, sat guests, took orders, ran food, helped cook food in the kitchen, and cleaned tables!! She is a SUPERSTAR! We learned later that the restaurant is owned by her grandmother. Her family should be very proud of her, for she did a fabulous job with a GREAT attitude, and was so kind and sweet to everybody. Food quality: This was my first time experiencing African food, and let me just say that I couldn't have had a better first experience! I wanted to try Fufu so badly, and it did not have any flavor when I ate it by itself but once used as a vessel to dip into my cassava leaves dish, it yielded a very fatty yam-like flavor that elevated the rest of my food nicely. Their Jollof rice was good, but I feel like it was not the star of the show. Their greens served with their tilapia tasted delicious! Their grilled tilapia and their salt fish dishes were difficult for me to eat, but enjoyable flavors. Their chicken is an absolute slam dunk! A MUST-TRY!! Their chicken and their cassava leaves dish with ugali fufu were my favorite. If you don't know what to order, try those!! Price: With the rising cost of meat, I understood why their prices were so high. The quality of their dishes as well as the phenomenal portions were SO worth it!!! Service was also 5-stars, so with tip and the fried tilapia, Jollof rice, greens, smoked chicken, cassava leaves, ugali fufu, salt fish, and a sofa, it brought me up to about $88. I ordered a lot of food and I feel like although it was more expensive than I would typically spend on dinner, I was happy to pay that amount with all things considered. If you have not had African food, Congolese food, I urge you to come give this place a try. Hands down one of my favorite new foods I've tried. Was super excited to try this place because food is more Ghanaian-leaning. Drove from mckinney to Irving to be disappointed. Pros: Jollof was decent. Tilapia was great! Okroh stew was great but meat portion was lil bit off( a lot of skin, not a lot of meat)! We had this spinach side that was bomb!!So the problem wasn't the food so much Cons: service is super super poor which is sad given how good the food is. Water is not free. They don't tell you it will be charged to you which I have never seen before in my life. Also we ordered 2 items we never got, went to the kitchen window after 20 mins of not getting it with our other food to ask for it, and they brought only one of the two dishes out and said nothing and did nothing about the other dish. I think our server legit left in the middle of our meal. Like we saw her leave. I know places are understaffed by man I have never seen service as bad as this. Other African places may not always have the best service but nowhere as messy as this. The worst restaurant in DFW. The prices are twice as much as you see in Yelp. I seriously hate that I almost dismissed egusi and fufu because of this place. I have a dog who breaks out of the house and eats dead animals. I tried to give her the food, and she turned it down. That's how awful this place is. I was given 2 cups of flavorless, cringe worthy egusi with one ball of fufu. $25. An order of jollof rice which tasted like rice mixed with tomato sauce. Two Heinekens and was billed over $50. I think they stay in business due to the grocery side which carried imported goods. Not sure how else. Please skip this place! I had to really think about writing this post because I used to love this place. We witnessed the workers clean the dirty tables, including our table, with just a dry and regular napkin. And then took out the trash, then proceeded to go in the kitchen and put both of his hands in the bowl to mix something. He didn't wash his hands, didn't wear gloves anything. The young lady wore one glove but then used it to eat and then proceeded with fixing the food. The manager really needs to implement better cleaning protocols and the use of gloves and washing of hands. We used to come her and order to go all of the time but I'm really rethinking ever coming back again because of the things I saw today. read more

If you're ever wondering where do Africans for their flavors and rythme from and would like to know why their always smiling. Then this place is for you! The exquisite blend of spices from the motherland will give you an experience unlike no other. Their food is very rich in flavor and the spices use will leave you "coi" (Latin word for mesmerized in silence). I only gave them 3 stars, because although the food is amazing. The service delivery doesn't come close to the quality of the food. They are understaff and a simple order take way too long. We had to ask 5 times to get some to go boxes that were right in front of the staff. It took 30 mins to get my food which is fine due to COVID and there was only 1 person working there including cooking the food and attending to the sitted quest. That's not a problem and doesn't count towards my opinion. The issue I had is the food was not good. I got vegetable soup with goat meat and pounded yam. The soup was only half full, it was super oily, I mean an insane amount of palm oil. Absolutely not tasty, just greasy. It cost $19 which wouldn't be a problem if the soup wasn't just half full in the bowl and at least it should taste good. Right off the bat, I'm going to say that the African Village Restaurant COULD HAVE gotten 5 Stars if they just did the simplest action... Customer Service! The West African Food here is DELICIOUS! Though it's not South African food that I'm used to, it did remind me of the Braai (Barbeque) taste and atmosphere. My mother and I came here to end our "Mother's Day Weekend" together before she drove back home and it also reminded her of Africa and the Braai as well. The Meats were finger licking good and then some! Our platters (Beef & Goat) were complimented with Grilled Plantain Slices, Rice, a Bread Ball, Spicy Pepper Dipping Sauce and I think Cameroonian Fried Spinach. For the price we paid, it made us completely filled and happy! As for service... well... let's just say the Food made up for it! Listen, it's a hole-in-the-wall restaurant or to some a mom-n-pop shack, of course not all small, family owned business are going to perform like commercial Food & Beverage services. My tip to those visiting, BE PATIENT! Your food will come to you, HOT & DELICIOUS. Sure, you'll wait for some time for your drinks and refills... with ICE. African Village was my first time to have Nigerian food, but I feel safe in saying "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" The owner wanted to ensure my first experience at her restaurant was a good one, and I've always wanted to try fufu and this was my chance. I ordered the lunch special jerk chicken and asked for a side of fufu. Apparently you don't eat fufu with jerk chicken though. She could tell I wanted me some fufu though. She made my awesome chicken with rice and greens and brought me a bowl of soup and some fufu! She also brought me a few fried plantains. These items were FREE. She only charged me for the awesome jerk chicken. The food was fantastic! I was indulged in every bite of the different flavors. She even taught me how to eat fufu. This place is good enough to return to when it comes to the food, but it really felt like somebody's momma was cooking for me. Eat at African Village. This place is GREAT.
