My husband got the jollof rice with chicken. The rice was very good, chicken was a bit tough and plantains were mid. I got the efo-riro w/ assorted meat. The stew was well seasoned but I personally am not a a fan of cow tongue or cow foot so I wish I got just beef. The beef in my stew was tough and a bit dry. Overall food was 8/10 , service 8/10. Loud Wizkid playing, plenty of Malta available, and only 1 host/server for the entire restaurant...typical. The food: There was sooo much palm oil in everything. Blood. Of. Jesus. Lola's is the hottest place in town as far as Nigerian/African food or dishes are concerned. We, me and my wife visited Lola's from Glen Carbon IL. We had a very wonderful and beautiful experience from this wonderful restaurant, the owner Charles, is the kind of person you want to associate with on daily basis. He's funny, kind, very professional. Not that this place is very clean and spacious, the foods are off the chain, insanely delicious, we tried almost everything trying to find a bad food but each of the food we eat tastes seems to be more delicious. The price of their food is very affordable, the staffs are very friendly and attentive. I want to use this opportunity to give a big shoutout to Charles, Taiwo and all the staffs at Lola's restaurant and lounge, more grease to your elbows. You made us feel very welcomed and as a family. I am big about service. Truth be told I can make just about anything food at home, name the cuisine and dish, and I will prepare it to my liking provided I have the right ingredients on hand. When I go out to eat the main thing I am looking for is service, because at the end of the day I left my pretty little kitchen, spent time and gas, and opened my wallet to dine in someone's restaurant and experiment with someone's food. This brings me to Lola's. Being Nigerian, it is soooo hard to grade Nigerian restaurants. When you have tried the good, bad, ugly and everything in between. When you reserve certain dishes for your great grand aunt and others your refuse to cherish outside of the confines of my home. That being said, when I eat Nigerian food outside I can be overly critical of it, so it's unfair for me to give a justified review to the same scale that I use for other restaurants. But service I can measure anywhere. When I ordered my usual egusi soup with goat meat and NO KPOMO NO BONES I received my soup with just that... actually flaunting more kpomo than usual. I gagged, my husband stopped the waiter adding, "did you just bring her what she asked you NOT to bring? She doesn't eat skins." The waiter looked embarrassed and took the meat to the back. Minutes later another woman questioning what happened and why did I not initially state exactly what I wanted. I corrected her and informed her that I did indeed specify not to have that variation of goat on my dish. She apologized again. Minutes later when I had already dug into my food and made an aside to my husband about possibly finishing my food before my meat arrived, she appeared with a steaming dish of nothing but delectable, tender goat meat. It seemed she went through the trouble of selecting just what I wanted and had even doubled my original serving. SCORE!! read more

This is the first Nigerian restaurant I have ever been to. Glad we tried it. It was quite an experience. The food flavor was amazing. However, if you are not used to food adventure you may wanna stick with the continental menu, which btw we were told by the server, for amateurs. :) Because authentic menu has some unconventional items in it, such as Shaki (tripes) and cow feet. My wife went with continental that included Jolof rice, plantain and beef stew with pieces of cartilage in it. I called it Nigerian version of Applebee's dish. :) According to the server I went beyond 1st timers by ordering OGBONO from the authentic menu that included pounded yam, beef stew with cartilage, cow feet and Shaki. For appetizers, we ordered puf puf, meat pie and fried chicken meat on a stick. Nothing out of the ordinary in appetizers. Chicken flavor was good. Puf puf is simply sweet dough ball, perfectly sweetened for me, but not enough for sweet tooth. Meat pie is like meat patties. Once my main dish arrived with the yam wrapped in a plastic, I was sitting and staring at it for a while, bcs there was no silverware and I wasn't sure how to start eating. So I asked the server. He told us, in Nigeria they ate with hand. If I wanted to use silverware he could bring me some bcs they had enough! :) But if I wanted to go the authentic route I should use hand. I figured when in Nigerian restaurant eat as Nigerians eat! So I got up, went to the tiny sink by the wall to wash my hand. Make sense why they had that sink in the dining area. I still didn't know how to start. So our server helped me with that. Unwrap the yam, take a little piece and dunk it in the stew and eat. Pick up the cow feet with hand and bite the cartilage out of it. Eat the piece of beef the same way. Where I failed was the tripe, it's chewy of course. I just couldn't take a bite out of the rectangular piece of Shaki. So I decided to use it as a spoon for my left over gravy after finishing the yam. :) The flavor of everything was just fantastic. Beef had a smokey spicy flavor, not over spicy like Indian food. Yam was so smooth and the cow feet, however strange it sounds, was great! Only thing I would have liked in the cross section of the foot is a piece of bone marrow. The continental dish ordered by my wife, as I said just a Nigerian version of Applebee's dish, :)......but much more flavored. They seem to use okra in the gravy so it's a bit slimy. Overall it was a great experience. The ambience is good as well. It has a lounge on one side and lighting is appropriately lounge like. read more
