Went to this Halal restaurant for the first time and the overall experience was not good! First of all, their website listed on Google is not correct. It directs to an article about this restaurant on D Magazine website. Not sure why the owner has not noticed and corrected that yet. If there is no website then Google should not show it at all. It is just confusing to customers. Second, their restaurant menu is not up to date. Majority of the items under "Les Grillades," "A La Braise," and "Sauces" were not available. We were told by the server that they used to make it in the past but not anymore. If not anymore, again, why the menu is not up to date? Why wasting customer's time? There is a picture of a full grilled chicken with coleslaw on Google. When asked for it, we were told it is a "Pepper Chicken" that is only available during the day time and we also have to order in advance. We didn't see this item on the menu and not sure how customers will know about this item and when to order. Pure carelessness from the owner! For the food, we ordered "Meat Pie," "Benachin," and "Afra/Dibi" chicken. Meat pie was good but little expensive in my opinion. Afra/Dibi chicken was good as well and also came up with a decent portion. What I didn't like about it is that it only came with a bunch of onions and nothing else. No sides at all which I thought was little bizarre specially for the price they are charging. I did not like Benachin! Small portion, expensive, and tasted just okay. It was just a boiled meat with some rice and vegetable curry. Vegetable curry was good but rest of the dish was just okay. I don't recommend this dish. Their customer service was iffy. We were not checked upon in a timely manner. There was a short hair African American lady and her customer service was good. There was another African American lady and she definitely needs training on her customer service and attitude. She would barely come to the table and hardly answer any questions or try to help. Rest of the time I saw her behind the counter spending time on her phone! This restaurant only has bottled water and they charge for it. A nice local spot! We came on a Friday night and it did not seem too busy. We sat ourselves and received a menu, although there is also a counter at the front where you can probably make orders as well. I loved the pies, the flavor of both of them were really good and the crust was perfectly crunchy. The sauce they provided on the side was quite spicy. We decided to get the top 2 most popular items, the Benachin and Chicken Yassa. The Benachin had good stew meat and flavor, however the meat was a little tough for me. I really did love the onion and carrot mix on the side, it gave the dish so much flavor. The Chicken Yassa also had that onion mix, and this time included fried potatoes as well, which were lightly seasoned. The chicken flavor was good, but also a little on the drier side. I was really looking forward to trying this West African restaurant, but unfortunately the experience fell short. We arrived at 12:05 and waited at the door for several minutes before a woman arrived from the restroom. She immediately walked behind the counter and not towards the door to seat us. I asked if they were open since the chairs were still on top of the tables from the closing shift. She said yes and we sat down, soon after this she put a menu on the table for us and took a call. A few moments later another woman walked in and it appeared that she was an employee as well. She came over and greeted us and took our order. We ordered the meat patties to start and 2 additional main dishes. The meat patties have a tasty filling but are fried and carry a lot of grease. If these were baked they would've been perfect. The food from the main dishes were disappointing overall, the flavors were muted, and tasted under seasoned and not freshly prepared. The chicken was extremely dry and the beef was way too salty for taste. The menu is priced really high for the quality of food we receive. $65 with tip for 2 dishes and 1 appetizer in Plano, yikes. I truly wanted to enjoy this meal and support a local spot offering West African cuisine, but based on this visit, I wouldn't return. I order yassa and okra soup-stew: Yassa came in a large container filled with rice and potatoes/yams, with an overcooked dry chicken leg quarter on top of the rice and a TINY SERVING OF YASSA that didn't have much cabbage, mostly onions and no flavor-no carrots-no olives! As for the food, I have had the pleasure of sampling everything on the menu and I have enjoyed every single item, obviously some more than others. This spot is is absolutely a must try. The staff here are great and make sure you are taken care of. We ordered the fufu not knowing that the dishes we ordered typically don't pair with fufu. Lo and behold, who i presume to be the chef, comes out with a small bowl of goat stew. He explained to us that fufu is properly eaten with a soup of some kind and provided it to us to try free of charge. A very kind gesture that was unexpected! Chef Suleman needs to humble himself and work on his customer service. He has become a completely nasty person. I was a regular customer for 3 years. Now my last order I made on September 16th was quite disappointing compared to what I was used to. I ordered soupe kanja, chicken yassa and some meat pies. The soupe kanja, which was my dinner (the chicken yassa I bought for my friend), was horrible. The soupe was so sour and the meat tasted old, I couldn't even eat most of it. So I reached out to Suleman by text to let him know. He left me on read 3 timed until I had to ask "hey is this Suleman, I keep being left on read". That's when he replied that "he'll look into" but never reached back out. I waited for a refund for the soupe kanja, nothing. So I left a follow up review on his google page last night. So today, he sends a screenshot of my review and said some nasty things (screenshot attached).... I'm legit appalled by his behavior, especially towards a regular customer. As a business owner, he needs to learn how to accept constructive criticism, WORK ON IT DILIGENTLY and do proper customer resolution. Ignoring the customer and avoiding to properly mend the situation is completely unacceptable. They also provided us space to pray in addition to complimentary tea - a delicious aromatic warm-up for the sensational food to come. We also felt adventurous and ordered several pineapple ginger juices. If you love ginger I definitely recommend ordering one, but if you are only into pineapple it may not be for you. It paired well with the dishes, however it definitely reminded me how spicy ginger can be. Appetizer: we begin with meat pies - and they were wonderful. A savory crescent of joy paired with a mildly spicy sauce. They did not have the shrimp pies at the time, but we will be back to investigate those. Main Dish: I ordered the Benachin - rice cooked in a zesty broth with carrots/cabbage paired with beef. The flavor of the broth was superb and complimented the tender meat and flavorful rice. I now understand why this is the most "celebrated dish" from the region. I also tried the Chicken Yassa - it would be unfair to compare to the Benachin - but the chicken was moist, flavorful, and the onions enhanced the chicken. I chose to come here with my book club since we were discussing a book by a West African writer. None of us were familiar with the food, but the waitress helped us with the menu. I tried the wolof (hibiscus drink) , the panket (puffed, fried dough) , the domada (peanut curried chicken) , and the fried plantains . Everything came out hot and delicious. I have never had more flavorful, mouth-watering onions. I don't even care for onions much, but I so desperately need their recipe for it. Meat Pie - like any other meat pie so nothing stood out. Shrimp Pie - much better but could be because I've never had a fried seafood pie so I was astonished. Wonjo - it was good but tasted a bit like Koolaid. Too sweet for my preference. Pineapple Ginger - ginger in the forefront then pineapple to swash it down. Perfect palate cleanser and thirst quencher. This place was amazing! They just opened up and I am so excited there is a place in Plano that sells African food. Everything there was a bite of flavor and love! You must get their meat pies!! The crust was flaky and filling was very rich and flavorful. The dipping sauce was the cherry on the top for this! I don't know how I've gone my whole life without this! Their main dishes were not only huge but top notch. We got their benachin with beef which was my favorite dish of all. The meat was tender and melted in my mouth! We also got their chicken yassa and afra chicken. The meat for these were a little bit more dry than the beef but their onions and sauce were the perfect pairing. The food is absolutely delicious but the service can be a bit slow and discombobulated. I expected to wait a bit for my food as I had visited before and got the dibi (goat) to-go. Today I decided to dine in so I ordered the fataya (meat pie) to snack on while I waited with my first glass of bissap. I ordered the poulet dibi and a side of rice (jollof). The chicken dibi eventually came and it was worth the wait. I asked about the rice and was ensured that it was coming. I ordered another bissap and when it finally came a little later, I inquired again about the rice....needless to say I finished my meal, waited some more, and then finally asked for a to-go container and the rice still never came. I went to pay and the rice was on my order but as it never came, I told the gentleman at the register and he deleted it from the order. Very tasty food! My wife and I had the Benachin with beef. It was delicious and tasted every bit as authentic as what I remember growing up in Sénégal. Equally good was I the Baobab juice.
