Upscale Flavor in Downtown Lewes, but Something Was Missing While on a business trip to Lewes, Delaware, I was in the mood for Mexican and Agave came highly recommended, so I decided to give it a try. What I really enjoyed right away was the location. This isn't along the main roadway or highway area that most people associate with Lewes, the more business-heavy stretch with fast food and chain spots. This is tucked into the charming downtown area near the canal, surrounded by neat little houses and a truly quaint, cool atmosphere. It's a great setting for an evening out. Agave is definitely more of an upscale Mexican restaurant, and the interior reflects that. Stylish, clean, and thoughtfully designed. I took a few photos because the ambiance adds to the experience. One thing that surprised me was that they don't bring out complimentary chips and salsa. At most Mexican restaurants, that's just part of the experience. Not a deal breaker, but it does set an expectation when you sit down. I started with the empanadas. They looked different from what I'm used to, but they were very tasty and full of flavor. They came topped with a fresh chopped tomato mixture, almost like a light salsa, along with a lime. After squeezing the lime over the top, the flavors really popped. Unique presentation and very flavorful. For my entrée, I ordered the veggie burrito. I asked the waitress if it came with chips on the side, and she said no, which was a little disappointing, especially considering the price point and upscale feel. When the burrito arrived, the presentation wasn't great, as you can see in the photo, but once again, the flavor delivered. Overall, I'm a bit mixed on Agave. The portion sizes were average, nothing extraordinary, but the food itself was definitely flavorful. For me, the lack of chips and salsa and the absence of a side with the burrito made it feel like something was missing, particularly at this price level. If I could offer one suggestion, adding chips and salsa or even a small side with the burrito would elevate the experience and better match the upscale positioning. Flavor-wise, they're doing a lot right. For now, though, I probably wouldn't return on my next trip. read more

Walked out. First time ever (and I eat out a lot). Run by teenagers. Seated and waited 10 minutes while several kids stood behind the bar. It was not packed - half full at best. Server attended to others seated after us and never acknowledged us. No drinks, no water, no service. Meanwhile, looking at the menu, the fajitas are over $50 and burritos at $25+. House margs were $18! I accept the price at a beach town IF the service and food was great. I blame this 100% on management for lack of supervision. There was no one who was customer focused. We tried to get attention. As we left, the hostess who seated us yelled, "I hope you had a good experience!" I didn't and told her the wait staff was terrible which got me a teenage 'hmmph" and look like it was my fault. Will never spend a dime here. read more

We've been here a number of times but we're in charming downtown Lewes for a couple hours, were hunger, and decided to have a bit. We arrived on Halloween day which was a Friday at about 1:45PM, so not too crowded. Were were promptly seated at a small table for 2 rift by the window looking out on Second Street which was delightful. I was with my Sweetie wife, however this would have been a great seat to take a date. I chose the veggie fajita and diet coke. ( I had 3 due to so much walking...free refills). There was a full bar indoors, so a bit of noise from the television broadcasting sports as well as the background chatter of dozens of patrons. My fajita came on 4 plates (veggies, rice, beans, and bread) as well as 3 small containers filled with salsa, cheese, and lettuce. It was good, I must say. We were served our meal within 12-15 minutes by Kira who was pleasant, attentive, and visually appealing. We had no room for dessert due the portion sizes being ample. I seem to recall free chips and salsa which is not the case now. Our total bill for the 2 of us came to $52. I've not yet been to their location on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach, however I prefer the intimacy and charm of this location on Second Street in charming downtown Lewes, Delaware. read more

Do I wish I could give more? Yes because I was really looking forward to going here. The food was just so blah as someone who has lived in locations with great Mexican food and influence. I agree with a few other mentions that the food is bland. The guacamole was pretty good but everything else was just okay. The elote was wildly disappointing.. I came for lunch with a girlfriend who is Mexican and was in town visiting for the day. Later that evening I told my husband it really wasn't worth us going back. We were thinking of going for dinner some time but that would be a waste. Service is good and it's a cute setup. It was just not the food I was expecting from reviews. Again, though, I do think the area demographics might result in skewed opinions especially if they haven't had anything to compare it to. A part of me wants to go back and order a wider range of things but I feel like we did the first time too and it just wasn't great. read more

It gets the job done if you are hungry. But the food lacks any real flavor. My tacos tasted like they were made by some 16 year old kid named Brad. And it's severely over priced for what they give you. If you think salt and pepper is spicy, you might enjoy it. Otherwise, I'd pass. Service was fine though. Everyone was nice. read more

Don't know why we never came here before in our annual forages in Lewes but the endless juggling of food preferences and restrictions finally led us here and thank goodness. Agave is a 'refined' style of Mexican so not so spicy and actually healthier than most, they don't fry tortillas for tacos, the corn chips aren't greasy and there's no lard in sight (side beans are unmashed black beans). It's pretty big for downtown Lewes, pretty loud due to hard interior surfaces, but quite attractive inside. We were lucky to just walk in and sit on a Monday evening in August. Oh right the food. I got really good mole enchiladas with pulled chicken, wife got quite good steak tacos, daughter got a garden quesadilla smothered with fresh cooked vegetables and son got a 'spicy chicken quesadilla'. Now this one was kind of odd, the chicken had an almost Buffalo wing sauce on it which kid wasn't expecting--not bad, but not like the other dishes. But he tore it all apart and rebuilt the bites with our chips and some queso or crema and it all worked out. My Paloma and wife's house Margarita were also perfectly fine. Spicy chili powder my Paloma glass rim was a nice surprise. Good place and one of the best for vegetarian and gluten/dairy free folks in Lewes. read more

Last night we ventured into Agave Mexican Restaurant sat at the bar. Was busy but great vibe. The bar tender Kengy (sp) one of the best I've met in a long time. Tons of energy and makes each drink like he is making it for himself. Tons of professionalism and great host! Felt like I was sitting in my own kitchen with friends. Margarita was excellent and the expresso martini best I've ever had. Real ingredients with French pressed coffee. So with this being my first experience def 5* service all the way. Pupusa's are no longer available as a appetizer, which I had had in the past as a main course with the beans. We went to Agave for lunch based on a recommendation and the Yelp Reviews. The restaurant inside is modern and hip with a bar in the center. The service was also fantastic. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. However, we were not overly impressed by the food. It was just a-ok and we were expecting more based on the reviews and personal recommendation. We ordered the Surf and Turf Burrito, the Veggie Burrito and the Farmers Market Quesadilla. There was very little surf or turf inside the Burrito and the Veggie Burrito seemed to be loaded with Rice and Beans. The Farmers Market Quesadilla was the oddest assembly of a Quesadilla I have ever encountered. The veggies (primarily corn) were thrown on top of the flour tortilla. Overpriced tourist trap. In an area that has an abundance of really good Mexican restaurants, this place is not one. I had the steak burrito and it was pretty bad. Bland...definitely more rice than anything else. Honestly, I had better at Moe's and Chipotle. Chicken quesadilla was expensive and super skimpy. Plus you have to pay 8.75 for chips and salsa. Had lunch at the Lewes Agave today with friends from out of town they were passing through from NJ to NOVA and had a limited amount of of time before they had to get back on the road to get back before dark. We all had cocktails and each ordered an entry plus guacamole for the table. Service was good, food was delicious and portions were ample! So much so I could only eat 1/2 of my Cali burrito & requested a to go container, we split the bill and ran down the street to pick up some Italian cookies. I realized I'd left my 1/2 of burrito on the table and I ran back to collect it. The busser told me it was at the front counter And by the time I walked up to the front counter apparently it had been disposed of. I asked for a gift card for an app for the next time I came and they refused but did offer to make me another. not a bad offer but I couldn't wait 20 minutes for another as the other persons in my party needed to hit the road. I felt it would be faster to get a gift card than wait for another. They refused. I was frustrated first with myself for leaving it but also for the refusal of a future option due to time constraints. One doesn't usually think of Mexican food in a sleepy beach town like Lewes, but when a place like Agave is around, you should. My wife and I went there for dinner one night and it is lovely. To start with the place is rural done with dark beams and walls that look adobe but it was done in subdued colors rather than the usual garish colors you often get a Mexican themed places. The result is it looks 'authentic' or at least lets you know you're in a style of restaurant but it is still relaxing. I had a beef and cheese dish but was a little alarmed when they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked. I didn't need worry. The cooks in the back know their business. It was flavorful tasty, tender, across the boards wonderful. Portions are fair and leave you wanting just a little bit more, which is of course perfect. Better that than over stuffed. One word of warning, the drinks are strong. I had one of their large specials and seriously. ONE of those was more than enough. I made it back to the hotel after a wonderful experience but it was a near run thing. Lewes is full of wonderful places to go but when you've had enough fish, this is the place to head to. read more

Came on an off season lunch on a Saturday. Not too busy and was sat right away. The decorations and ambience were tasteful and bathroom was clean. We ordered the small chips and queso for the appetizer. The queso was tasty but missing something. Highly recommend asking for fresh chopped jalapeños- though to forewarn you they up charge the jalapeños for $1.25 which was not expected. Ordered a chicken tortilla soup as a meal and the farmers market quesadilla. The soup was good and filling but I've had better in other locations; the portion was a bit small for the price but came with a side of extra tortilla chips. Quesadilla was good with queso in it - highly recommend. The veggies were placed right on top of the quesadilla which made it soggy but the portion size was worth it. Ordered the elderflower drink recommended by our waitress. Was a bit sweet. Also ordered a large house margarita which was okay. Overall experience was okay. Nothing special but looks like the only Mexican food in the area. Don't expect anything spectacular but still decent! I'd come again and try other food. read more

I love breakfast burritos. I just did a quick Yelp search within my reviews and saw I've ordered  two in Connecticut, one in Ohio, one in Texas, one in Nevada, one in California, one in Arizona, and most recently one in Delaware. The Delaware Breakfast Burrito at Agave was THE ONLY ONE that charged a fee for a side of salsa to accompany the burrito. We had to pony up $2.50 for a quarter cup ramekin of their salsa. Anyway, our lunch at Agave was very good. We had a dining room seat near the bar and enjoyed watching the bartenders whip up drink after drink for the crowded bar and dining room. I marveled at one bartender who held three or four bottles in one hand as she simultaneously poured their contents into a pitcher or some sort of a vessel.  That was pretty cool. We ordered with sharing in mind, so we split that Breakfast Burrito with egg, bacon, and avocado in a flour tortilla ($14.50),  and a Mango & Avocado Salad ($15.95) with bib lettuce, bacon, queso fresco, pine nuts and a creamy pine nut dressing. The food was excellent and I enjoyed both dishes. The standout items included perfect creamy avocado and some unexpectedly fantastic bacon slices - thick and meaty and excellent. Always make it a point to dine here when we visit the area every summer. The menu options, quality & flavor seem to have declined over the years. They used to offer a stacked enchilada that was divine. Now it's standard American Mexican options (burritos, tacos, quesadillas, etc). Confession: I do get annoyed when charged for chips and salsa. I loved their red salsa. Their margaritas are definitely strong. I got the pomegranate which IMO was much better than the original one margarita. We sat at bar and chatted with some friendly locals while waiting for the table. I got the chicken enchiladas and my husband got the steak and shrimp burrito but asked for it to be served in a bowl instead of the burrito. I almost had given up on Mexican food because it seemed like no matter what I ordered it pretty much tasted the same. Not here! There were 4 of us and everyone really enjoyed everything about the place. The 2 different Daiquiris were beautiful to look at, very large and also delicious. The Mojito was also very good and it's nearly impossible to mess up a Modelo Especial beer. The Chips and Salsa ... Uno, Dos, Tres, gave us a selection of Red, Verde and Pico de Gallo which gave you a nice choice of heat level. For me "the winner" of the meal were the Bleu Cheese and Steak Quesadillas which were tender, thin slices of Filet mignon, Bleu cheese, shredded Mexican cheese, and caramelized onions between flour tortillas. I am now a believer in Quesadillas again! The large Fish Tacos were 2 puffy tacos stuffed with fresh grilled Mahi-Mahi, jicama slaw, pico de gallo and Mexican lime crema - delicious. The Garlic Pepper Shrimp brought about 12 (?) fairly large skewered shrimp to the table over Mexican rice, served with a lime mango salsa. Very very good. So for the above, with 4 drinks, before tip, the bill came to around $68 per couple - not inexpensive but well worth it. read more

Enjoyed thei large pomegranate margarita. It was a little sweet and strong. We had the regular guacamole and chips. The chips tasted like someone dumped salt on them (I like salt, however it was too much). The mango and avocado salad was very good My boyfriend ordered the surf and turf burrito which was good I liked he spicy shrimp inside I ordered the chicken mole enchilada which came out room temperature. We have gone here every year we visit Lewes area- it's a consistent favorite. We like sitting at the bar best because we enjoy watching the bartenders mix all their drinks. They are very busy and very hard workers. It's also nice to chit chat with them between their busy times. One of my go-to menu items is the fish tacos. They come with a puff style taco that's fried so it's hard. However it makes a huge mess. I took advice from a regular who suggested to order with soft tacos (they offer flour and corn). This helped, but still kinda messy to eat. So if you don't mind a mess, the fish tacos are tasty! My husband ordered the burrito and enjoyed it as well. Their guacamole is also out of this world- they offer many unique takes on guac and offer flights of that and their salsas. They have a very short happy hour from 2-4 on Mon-Fri but if you can make it the $8 margs are totally worth it. Best we have had and they are not small. They also offer a house made spice blend similar to tajin for the rim which I highly recommend. read more

Mmmm, it's a tasty Mexican restaurant with great drinks. We ordered the Steak Blue Cheese and onion quesadillas, and the beef was so tender and nicely marinated. The serving of Chicken Enchiladas with traditional red sauce was delicious their portions are enough to feed two people. I had a hard time picking a dessert. There were so many, but finally, we ordered a Vanilla Coconut Lime Cake with lime curd filling and coconut cream icing. Deliciousness overload. The cake was extremely moist and not too sweet but sweet enough. The filling was what my significant went after and really enjoyed. Overall, we really enjoyed the restaurant and quintessential New England downtown of Lewes enough, so we signed on to stay a few more nights. read more

Been going to Agave in Lewes since it opened. Loved their Margaritas, the best around! Food was always delicious. However....they have changed the ingredients in their classic Margaritas with lesser quality and are not as good. This past Friday night we were seated at a table past the bar and acoustics were so bad we could not hear each other speak. I've enjoyed their food and especially their mango avocado salad. However, I noticed changes over the past year. The salad got skimpier. I went there today and the salad was down to two leaves of butter lettuce. There was more bacon in the salad than lettuce which makes no sense. I commented to the bar tender and he even noted how the bowl was not full and offered more lettuce. However, I'm not going to a restaurant to prepare my own salad.
