Street tacos
Chris P.

What a great surprise. Took myself out to lunch. I had a bowl of the Cocido de Pollo. OMG. Best broth Great soup. I finished it off with street tacos Fantastic. Great smiling service. Yesterday I took myself to Brine. Twice the cost and not nearly as fresh and delicious as Agave. Treat yourself!

Cocktails were on point, but the food was too salty for us.

It's been a few years since we've been to Agave, and sadly I feel it has declined. As far as the food goes, the complimentary chips and salsa are delicious, but all of our food was just too salty. I'll be the first to admit that I am somewhat sensitive to salt. but my wife also agreed that her fajitas were far too salty. Refried beans were inedible for me, just too much salt. I'm not sure why the chef is so heavy handed, as I think the food would have been delicious if it was allowed to shine through. My pork carnitas would have been awesome, if not for the heavy salting. Service was harried. We were seated on the third floor and there was only one server, who tried his best but was simply overwhelmed. He was the bartender as well and had at least 6 patrons at the bar, and every table filled with patrons. Again, he did his best, but he needed help. He arrived at our table and asked what we wanted to drink, not even a hello or welcome. Cocktails were as good as I recall. Prices here have always been a tad higher than other Mexican restaurants, but the quality was also better. As others mention, there is a 4% fee for using a credit card, which just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Just build it into the prices. Perhaps they should become a cash only restaurant with an atm at the entrance. It's not what one expects really for this caliber of restaurant. I do hope management can address the concerns here in the reviews and bring Agave back to a great dining experience.

After reading reviews , we went expecting real Mexican food. Had to climb up stairs to 3rd floor and then sat at a table by a drafty window on a cold night. Food tasted like a chain place. Nothing special here. Shrimp tacos soggy and not tasty. Steak Fajitas salty and sides were canned refried beans and rice tasted fishy. The pork nachos were however good. Soggy and messy but good. BEWARE - they charge extra for credit / debit cards. They get around the law saying it's a "cash discount". It's only a few dollars per check but do the math , they are making up hundreds of dollars a day doing this to patrons.

Visited for the first time and had a wonderful experience. Food was excellent with generous portion size, service was fast and friendly. Seating available both inside and out. We shared the Queso Fundido & Chicken Fajitas both were flavorful and filling. As a side note they give a 4% discount for cask paying customers.

Italian Margarita (made at my request)

I cannot attest to the food here, as we only stopped in for drinks on an afternoon of our weekend trip to Newburyport. However, I had two different margaritas (one on their specialty menu and another that wasn't listed on the menu). The off menu margarita I asked for was made PERFECTLY! The service from the host, to the bartenders, to the support staff, was friendly, fun, fast, and enjoyable!

wonderful dining experience. Agave exceeded my expectations set by the scathing yelp reviews I viewed. clearly agave reads and adapts to yelp reviews because the service on the second floor with my large group of 11 was fantastic. furthermore the sour cream was perfectly fine, and the flavor index of the tacos was more than spectacular. The atmosphere is a stellar positive Mexican dinner vibe with elegant lighting and accents of exposed brick. The vibes were even better after 3 of the delicious house margaritas. Agave met all the expectations for a go-to authentic mexican spot but the food is not quite 5-star. Edit: I also forgot to add that the market price Guacamole is well worth it. It is served in a cool looking mortar and is super high quality guac

Excellent service, perfect location with outdoor seating, and love that their patio is dog friendly! Menu has many vegetarian options. We ordered veggie quesadillas, bean and rice which was good. White sangria was delicious! Only critique is the menu is slightly overpriced, but overall a nice restaurant!

Truly nice food with a flair. Loved the combination of flavors and ingredients. Portions are filing and generous. I liked it!

Blackened shrimp & avocado salad. Yum! As good as it looks!

We took a day trip to Newburyport, and found Agave while strolling the main street. It was a beautiful day, and the folks drinking Margaritas & seated outside drew us in! One quick glance at the menu and we were sold. We were not offered outdoor seating (despite there being a table) but did not push the issue. The hostess asked us which floor we would like to be seated at, apparently there are three floors...uhhhh... you tell me?!? She proceeded to seat us on the third floor... I'm guessing because she sized us up and anticipated we could handle the two flights of stairs. Older patrons, or those with knee conditions may choose to be seated on the first floor. I'm a physical therapist, I can make these recommendations :) The restaurant is clean and with above average design. There was a bar on the first and third floors, with a neat decorative waterfall. I often do not find much that excites me at Mexican restaurants, but this menu had many options. Think typical Mexican with a twist & extra fresh ingredients. I ordered the blackened shrimp & avocado salad (see pic)... it was amazing! We also ordered endless chips & salsa. Although we did not partake in alcoholic beverage, it looks like this restaurant has that covered, too. I would recommend Agave if you're passing through Newburyport!

Chips and salsa

I like Agave. I eat here often, but it's overpriced for the portions you get. Normally, I wouldn't submit a review for the high price because it's good food and I know what to expect. But I have to share my most recent experience grabbing chips and salsa for takeout. $17 for two small cups and two bags of chips. Pictured below. It was laughable considering you can get bottomless chips and salsa for a fraction of that cost when dining in. The hostess was very nice and mentioned I should order the pint of salsa next time for $11. Service is good, food is good, but that price is wild!!!

25 dollar plate of "steak" tacos. Most bland and disgusting tacos I have ever had.

We arrived just after our friends who advised they had already ordered their drinks. Our waitress arrived promptly and took our drink order and then vanished. No drinks for quite some time. A manager came over to ask if anybody had visited us, apologized for the delay, and returned with our drinks. I'm estimating it was a bit over 30 minutes or so before drinks arrived. Our waitress did return, apologized and took our food order. I wasn't so sure about ordering sushi, but glad we did. The maki we tried were very good, fresh and beautifully presented. A great start. We switched gears for our entree and went with a parpadelle bolognese. A nice generous portion that was as good as some of the Italian spots in the area. Our friends also enjoyed their dishes. Portions were generous and prices were reasonable. I would easily have given 4 stars, but the service needs improvement. You would need to plan to spend at least a couple of hours for a lunch. In our case it was not a big deal as we were enjoying time with friends, but I can understand the other negative reviews now. We do plan to return to work our way deeper into the menu, and hope they will have more staff to help with the front of the house.

We had great service from our waitress, and even met the very pleasant owner/hostess who told us a bit more about the restaurant, menu and live music options. We did not get a chance to see the upstairs dining room, but the main floor was very nice, warm and cozy. The menu leans Thai, but I would say the is really Pan Asian. Food was served promptly, hot and delicious. I really enjoyed the Thai lettuce wraps, fresh, clean and delicious. The plate was served with just the right amount of chicken to lettuce ratio. It seems some restaurants struggle getting the ratio right, forcing you to ask for more lettuce, crackers, etc... Not here. We also enjoyed the Golden Bags small plate, which were crispy and delicious. Red Curry main entree was quite good. Heavy on vegetables with a thick red coconut curry. We saved room for dessert, and chose the Chocolate Roti. Perhaps a little bit of a misnomer, as it was two tasty roti filled with Nutella, and served with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Sort of like an ice cream sundae. While the menu is quite clear about it, I envisioned something more chocolatey. All good! Cocktails were also creative and delicious. We will definitely return and work our way deeper into the menu.

As someone who considers a well-constructed savory cocktail one of life's finer pursuits, I was genuinely excited. The hostess was lovely, warm even, but informed me that without a dinner reservation, the bar wouldn't be available until 9 pm. I was not welcome to simply sit and have a drink. I asked -- politely, I'd like to think -- whether an exception might be made. I was only in town for the weekend and promised that I could be in and out in twenty minutes but the answer was an unambiguous 'no'. There's something particularly unwelcoming about turning away a solo guest who has sought you out specifically for something only your restaurant offers. I came because Carmine does something nobody else does, at least nowhere I've found. And I was unceremoniously turned away with nothing to show for it. I understand the math. A Saturday evening at a restaurant like this lives and dies by full dinner covers, and a solo drinker nursing a cocktail for twenty minutes does not move the needle. But hospitality, real hospitality, has never been purely a numbers exercise. The irony is that I adore this restaurant. The food is spectacular, full stop. Had I possessed a second stomach, I would have happily demolished the Tonno Royale Spaghettini without a moment's hesitation. Carmine has earned genuine loyalty from me as a diner. But a Spicy Sicilian remains, for now, on my list of unfinished business -- and that is a small, specific disappointment I wasn't expecting to leave with.
