Poorly executed food and service overshadow a spectacular venue. It's clear that there's a management and training problem at this Newburyport waterfront restaurant. It took way too long to receive our burger and chicken tenders. It's because they were sitting for so long and the burger was not even warm. It had absolutely no flavor. It was advertised as caramelized, onions, Swiss cheese and grilled mushrooms. I only realized now that I received red onions. It was such a disappointment, but I was hungry. It was only remarkable in how remarkably tasteless it was. The service was just abysmal. It was Sunday afternoon around 1pm - 8/16. We had to flag our server down and she was not even friendly. She never said thank you when she handed our receipt. We received our cold meal and we had no utensils or napkins. It took us some time to flag down someone. We had to ask for ketchup and there were no other condiments. It was just terrible. I could not believe the 2.6 rating. It is very believable now. This is just poor management. The location and the restaurant are simply beautiful. It's a large bar with TVs that have the Red Sox on. A very good live singer entertained. The views of the harbor are wonderful. It did not make up for the gaps. I hope someone invests the time and leadership to elevate this experience. read more

We visited the Goat on Wednesday night- it was our first time in Newburyport. We had dinner at Tuscan Sea Grill and our server recommended the Goat next door for an after dinner cocktail. We sat at the bar, staff was friendly and let us know about their Wing Wednesday deal, but we had already eaten. My husband ordered the river walk beer, and I tried the cranberry margarita. Both were good, and the live music was great. It seemed to be more of a bar spot than a restaurant. We were planning to order another round, but while we were sitting at the bar, an older blonde woman who appeared to be a manager began loudly reprimanding staff nearby. It was uncomfortable enough that we decided to close out our tab and head somewhere else. We genuinely enjoyed the drinks, the service, and the overall vibe up until that point. Love the open patio to the water! It is beautiful here. Came here for drinks and just apps and was very happy with both of those things but was slightly disappointed by the service. It was a busy day so I would be happy to come back and try again but we were just walking around Newburyport and stopped in for what we hoped to be a quick snack and drink before meeting friends for dinner. We ended up waiting over 40 minutes for a plate of nachos and then didn't get our drinks until after. The waitress also took for ever to check on us. Our experience was disappointing from the moment we were seated. When we arrived, we specifically asked if we could bring our dog. We were told that wasn't a problem as long as we sat outside, and we were even told the umbrella at our table could be put up for shade. After we were seated in the direct afternoon sun, a staff member came over and, quite rudely, took the umbrella down, saying it violated code. The sun was simply too intense. We told them we would pay for the drinks we had ordered, but we were leaving because we couldn't comfortably stay in the direct sun. As visitors from the South, we were genuinely surprised by how unfriendly and dismissive the staff were. We ended up taking our business elsewhere, where we felt much more welcome. Looking back, we should have read the negative reviews before deciding to dine here. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. Went on a sunny Sunday and sat at the bar. The doors around the bar were all open, and there were a lot of people standing out on the deck enjoying the view. The bartenders were super awesome and attentive. We had a few delicious drinks and started with the buffalo cauliflower that was amazing. Our entrees tasted just as good! What a terrible experience. Went here Monday night for a birthday celebration with 5 friends. I got there first and asked for a table of 6. They asked my entire party was there and I said no not yet. They gave me a table. My friends showed up mostly about that time, but a few were running a bit late from driving an hour and being stuck not finding traffic. The entire time we had several employees come to the table interrupting us to ask when all of our guests will be there. And telling us if the other 2 guests don't show up within a few minutes they are moving us. Then the manager came over very rudely and said- We have a problem, your other 2 guests are not here and we have a wait list so we are going to move you to a smaller table. I explained how we had been rudely getting harassed for 30 minutes by staff threatening to take the table they gave us because our other 2 guests were late. Just the rudeness and constant interruption of our social time and enjoying food and drink ruined our night. Our other 2 guests arrived after struggling to find parking and having to walk quite a ways to get there. We will not be back to this location. We were seated at a 4 person table and there were 5 of us. It was tight. The table was cleaned with a dirty rag with food particles on it. The table wasn't even dried completely, I dried it. After the fourth time I decided to cash out to make sure the place I enjoy didn't get shafted like the individuals who ran out when it went off. Upon paying for my meal and drinks I asked for the military like I always do and was rudely interacted with by the floor manger saying we don't do military I said well yes you do I come here almost daily. She snarled and said well WE did enough for you today, (you mean you served me my breakfast and my three drinks?) and we don't do that. I then showed her that you do have a military discount and she mumbled something under her breath rudely and finally applied the discount. Mind you the bartender apologized, though not her fault. This manager is absolutely rude. This would be the second time. First time I actually thought they didn't have one until the second time I came in and was told there is one and they said this manager is just lazy and rude. The entire time I was here she was sitting down laughing with friends leaving her staff with no help.... throughly enjoy this place, but man she doesn't belong and needs an attitude adjustment. I had the hot mess burger. The burger was delicious, and mon and tue is bogo burgers which made it even better. The only desert option at the moment is a skillet cookie or a booze shake. It was clean and the service wasn't bad. My main complaint is there was a service charge on the bill. I understand a lot of places have added random fees but there was no mention of it on the menu and when I asked about it I was told yah we don't really like or understand it either but it's because ingredients went up. I am unpleasantly surprised at how poorly made the food was . We were seated immediately but waited over an hour to get cold, oily and over fried kids meals. The fries had sat in oil and were wilted. The chicken tenders were mid way to being black in color. The waitress never returned to ask about drink refills. The nachos I ordered fell in line with the kids meal. We gave this place another shot. The service hasn't been great on previous visits, but we love the location. There is one bartender that is consistently rude and overall, none are very friendly or personable . On one occasion they did not let a guest move their stool, even though there was plenty of room. It was very strange. The customers left and rather than moving it, they had to continually tell people not to sit there. Last night was our final straw.. It was 25 cent wing night... Our bill did not reflect the discount.. .When we questioned it the bartender said " oh ya we do that when you pay.. but like most who pay cash we almost just left the money on the bar.. sooo they would have given themselves a hefty tip... Or does it go to the bar? We were charged $36 vs $4 for the food until we requested the adjustment.. we did drink so our bill was quite healthy.. we could've easily missed this. How many others have just paid and not received the discount? also, they tack on a fee if you pay by credit card which I have not seen disclosed anywhere. I would be aware of this place. I have been back to The Goat a few times since it opened and have to amend my first review since (sadly) it's already gone downhill. The speciality drinks aren't good so I recommend either getting a beer or something simple like a vodka/soda. My experience with the waitstaff has always been positive but the restaurant DESPERATELY needs more bartenders! Our food came out before we got our drinks! The Goat opened their Newburyport location very recently on the Merrimack River waterfront. This country music restaurant & bar is a favorite place to stop for pub fare, drinks, and live music with other locations in Hampton Beach NH, Portsmouth NH, and Manchester NH. They also serve breakfast and brunch on the weekends. The place has a full service bar with seating all around, 12 beers on tap, can beers, mimosas, bloody marys, and mixed drinks. The big garage style windows can be opened during nicer weather for an open air bar experience with more standing room capacity on the waterfront patio deck area with plenty more dining surfaces along the edges to enjoy your drinks and food. There are several flatscreen TVs mounted above the windows and a few more tables inside. I stopped by The Goat in Newburyport for brunch recently and took a seat up at the bar. The bartender promptly brought out breakfast/brunch menus and offered a drink (I got an ice water). I ordered the Brisket Omelet ($15 plus tax & 3% surcharge) which was brought out in 15 minutes. The thick fluffy egg was folded over with tender lean beef brisket, goat cheese, & jalapeños with a large side of seasoned homefries and thick slices of wheat toast. I also requested a cup of spicy & sweet BBQ which went very well with the food. I barely finished my big breakfast and the bartender offered some more ice water as I was washing down the spicy aftertaste of my food. I paid the check and headed outside to look at the waterfront. Overall, my omelet plate was a very good and the service was friendly and prompt. I enjoyed listening to the country music over the soeakers as I am getting set to head to TN very soon. This location is definitely great for the atmosphere and much less traffic than Hampton Beach. read more
