My 1st time, I showed up at 7:45p on a Friday, and told "Not taking orders anymore" Yesterday, I went there at 7p on a Saturday, and had to beg to place an order to go. Was it worth it? Absolutely!! Can you say margaritas!?!? If I stopped there I would have called my experience GREAT! Unfortunately the food didn't live up to the alcohol. The food here is pretty average. I would recommend something with cheese in it. I ordered the chicken and cheese enchiladas. They were good, not great but did the trick to fill you up. The quesadilla my friend had was even better. I tried part of a pulled beef burrito. Ehhh... I would have preferred chipotle! If you are staying at one of the beach hotels it is convenient. The service was average. I was initially hesitate on going to this restaurant, because I was looking for a restaurant with more a scenic view, rather than one of the main street. However, I am so glad we went here! The house margaritas were good and the tequila was great. We started with the chips, salsa and guacamole, and while the chips should have been warm, they were homemade, and the salsa was fresh and very tasty! The best part were the tacos! Terrific Mexican food. I'm vegetarian, and my cheese enchiladas with bean sauce (I had never heard of "bean sauce" before) were terrific. Let me first say, this is a cute little beach restaurant with a nice atmosphere. We went for dinner and drinks, and the margarita was amazing... The food (for me) left a little to be desired. I got milanesa and although still good, it was not my normal idea of milanesa (perhaps because I've eaten it at a tiny family cuban restaurant my whole life)? Also. It was a little dry. Had a great time here last night! The barbacoa tacos are perfection! I'd go back right now for lunch if they were open and get the same thing! Cesar was the absolute best of the many servers that we had. He even set up my daughter's snoopy doll with a little beverage! I'd def request him in the future if possible. I think perhaps in response to reviews they may be "over serving" as we had several different people come to our table throughout the meal. I was catching up with a friend that I hadn't seen in years so we were absolutely not in a rush. We were asked like 27 times if we wanted to order. That's where the too much service came in. If we'd just had one person then they'd have known we were relaxing and chatty. Nonetheless, I didn't feel like the drinks and food took a particularly long time once upon ordering. House margarita by the glass was fab, the pitcher seemed a little heavy on the sour mix so not really a better value at the end of the day! This is literally the best Mexican food I've ever had!!!! Mexican is always my go to when it comes to cuisines and this place blew my mind. I had the chicken tacos and the flavoring was spot on. The guacamole, pico, and Verde salsa is a must. We also tried the chicken fajita burrito and it is the best burrito I've ever had. I am a person that actually goes out of my way to write positive reviews. In fact, I have not actually written a less than positive review. So first the tacos were fresh and delicious. The restaurant was empty when my daughter and I arrived. We sat at the bar. I did not get a welcome vibe. I ordered a Paloma...a drink that I have had many times. Apparently unbeknownst to me they are served with a salted rim. I apologized profusely but I cannot drink a drink with the salt and even if you "scrape" it off as the owner wanted to do...the salt is already in the drink. The owner told me that they are always served salted and I should have told her no salt. She made me another without salt and because of how uncomfortable the owner made us feel my daughter said she would drink it instead of the margarita she was going to order. My daughter took 2 sips and said she was sorry but she just couldn't drink it. The almost full salted one was left in front of me and my daughter ordered a margarita. The owner left and told the server to be sure to charge us for the drink. Apparently the business must be suffering financially and felt that the extra $10 would help them survive. I had planned to bring the rest of my family back this week, but regardless of the delicious tacos I will not be a repeat customer. read more

Literally the best authentic Mexican food I've had in St Pete. I've waited to review this restaurant bc I like to try a place a few times before giving my opinion. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and attentive, and made the best suggestions from dishes to tequilas. The food was outstanding from the guacamole to the Pescado Frito Entero, and the new tequilas we tried. I have read some of the other reviews and was so very surprised by the negative's, but those negative reviewers expose themselves as people who probably wouldn't recognize authentic Mexican food or good service if it bit them in the you know what. Free salsa doesn't make you a great Mexican establishment but instead an mex-american wanna be at best. When you need to identify yourself as a good tipper, well your probably not. I've been here ab 1/2 a dozen times and EVERYTHING is so fresh, I will be back at least a dozen more. We really looked foreward to eating here as we love Mexican food. Our waiter was completely unhelpful. He asked if we would like to start with the chips and salsa. I had a glimpse of the reviews prior and knew they were extra. I asked if they were extra and he said yes. I said I was used to these being a complimentary starter. He said that the salsa was homemade, that was the reason. Whatever. I ordered it anyway. They were good....but same as any homemade salsa and tortillas in any place I have ever been...except not unlimited. I always love to know what is popular. A good waiter will ask questions and give suggestions. Given a THICK menu and after a hot day, hey...narrow it down down for us, okay? There was none of that. So, he poo-poo'ed the Chimichangas I was interested in and said the Enchiladas were better. Ok...that was something. I ordered the chicken and the beef enchiladas for us. God, how I wished for the barbacoa tacos or chimichangas I had originally wanted. Three hours later there is a brick in my stomach. Glad we had some of the hot sauces from the chips and salsa to add to the enchiladas. Oh...sour cream was extra, by the way. What?? I love authentic Mexican. We felt fleeced by this place. The waiter checked on us on our final bite only. Wow. Really? We did like the house margaritas. Seriously, though...it's a margarita. Easy peasy. Don't bother. read more

Do yourself a favor and do not visit or patronize this restaurant in any way. First of all, the establishment was not kept very clean and as fairly dirty. The staff was very rude and impolite and my family and I did not receive good service. The food was awful! First of all, they charged us for chips and salsa, and then asked if we wanted guacamole with our chips and we said sure. It turns out the tiny bowl of guacamole was $4! On top of that, they gave us barely any chips which we an out of in 2 minutes, literally. After 10 minutes of having no food in front of us, they came in with the 8 tacos we ordered, and they flat out were terrible. They were smaller than the size of a typical computer mouse and they tasted awful. The tacos were only composed of lettuce and little meat. No beans or rice! When we received our bill, they not only charged us for the chips and guacamole, but they charged us for sharing our tacos with our kids too! Are you kidding me? They even charged us 18% for tips without our consent. In conclusion, to describe Agave Restaurant in two words: IT SUCKS! read more

If you're wondering about the poor rating, it has more to do with the owner than the food. You'll note in the reviews that many share this opinion. We're locals and used to eat there often. Food is good, drinks however, are very average. We've had multiple negative experiences and will not return. Once we were sitting at the bar, when some people that the owner knew sat down next to us. Without asking, the owner moved my wife's food over to make room for them at the bar. Literally moved her plate & drink over a spot - while she was sitting there. Another time we were sitting at the bar and ordered a couple of golden margaritas. You'll notice negative comments about the drinks, and this is known locally. I watched the owner pour tequila for one drink and put it (and a ton a ice) into two glasses. I did call her on it the minute she brought the drinks to us. $20 for an ounce of tequila is a good margin I guess. Too good to make it right. We paid our bill without drinking the drinks - and have not been back. read more

This is my favorite locally owned Mexican restaurant in the Tampa Bay area! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff are friendly and fun and don't expect to be rushed out - this is a dining spot where you enjoy the conversation of your dinner mates. Nice cozy atmosphere. Great tequila selection also has Presidente (great domican beer) on top of your more popular breweries (corona,modelo,etc.). Fish tacos were tasty, fish of the day was local mangrove snapper, all produce tasted fresh as well. Fried plantains were as good as can be expected. First let me say that this place has some of the best food and drink in the area. We usually take our out of town guests here for dinner and cocktails. Service is not the greatest but we are never really in a hurry. I went there today after a trip to the beach with my 9 year old, 6 year old, and their friend who is 9. They are well behaved children and it was his birthday and he loves a good serving of chips and salsa and authentic tacos. I am so disappointed with the unwelcome service we had and the dirty looks from the older woman who I believe is the manager/owner. You establishment is on the beach if you are upset with people bringing in sand and in their bathing suits I suggest you post a sign or move your location. We won't be back as we are a family and you clearly are not a family friendly establishment. read more

The food was amazing, however the waitress definitely needed a lesson on hospitality. The tip was included and maybe they is why her attitude was so disengaged. She gave off the vibe that we had annoyed her with our patronage. We would have loved to have engaged in another adult beverage, however she did not even give us an opportunity to ask for a second drink or even ask us how the was the food. If anything we felt like were bothering them with our patronage and would definitely not visit them ever again or recommend them to future patrons . As tourist and past restaurants workers we thrive for small businesses who welcome restaurant enthusiasts, we would have gladly spent our money and time in a business that would have welcomed our patronage, however tonight we would have been better off with service at Taco Bell. My wife and I ordered the enchiladas and they were horrible, probable the worst Mexican food I've had in my life. The enchiladas were dry with dry chicken and no sauce in the middle with a ton of cheese on top. When I asked to have two chicken and two shrimp enchiladas, I was told that they do not do that. Looks like they use frozen enchiladas. The Mexican rice ( white rice) seemed like instance rice with birds eye frozen vegetables ...peas and carrots in the rice. This place is NOT authentic Mexican food but frozen food warmed upped. I almost felt like asking for my money back but decided to call it a day and let future patrons know of how awful this place is. I love this restaurant and I'm a native of St. Pete but tonight the service was just awful. I'm in the restaurant industry so I get the COVID-19 issues. My server Elsa took my order and that was basically it. I realize I was a single female diner tonight & she probably didn't think she was gong to make much money with me... and she didn't because her service was terrible! I shake my head when EVERY restaurant was shut down for weeks & no one was working to get an order taker as my dining experience. I ate at a competitor on the beach last night - my bill was $25 and I tipped my server $10- tonight my bill with Elsa was $31 and I left her $1... I want Elsa to know that her service was horrible that I will tip for great service! Agave is amazing if you have a server who cares! read more
