Reviewing the to-go service only! Ordered a Mexican pizza and jalapeño poppers. First of all, they're great with substitutions especially if you're vegetarian. Mexican pizza was fire!! It's large enough for 2, maybe 3 if just as an appetizer. It's a yum and fresher version of the beloved Taco Bell item. The jalapeño poppers were also perfectly cheesed and deliciously tangy. Lunch on a Sunday with friends. As a person that eats only seafood and vegetarian options, there was a lot to choose from. Once you sit, you get chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious! The chips were warm and a great appetizer. We ordered waters and a margarita. We then ordered cheese enchiladas, the Mexican combo and the camarones tacos. Each came with two sides (which is a lot). I got pinto beans and a salad, my friends got black beans and rice. The servings after large and quite good. The shrimp had a kick to it which I liked and came with cabbage. The issue was the Chimichanga. It was a sloppy mess instead of a deep fried crunchy wrap. I never have seen a chimichanga delivered liked this. The refried beans were almost tasteless like paste. The black beans were good, prepared nicely. The queso sauce was ok but not nearly as good as what one could get from Chipotle. Perhaps eating at the restaurant would be a better experience? I truly remember this establishment when I went there. It was one of my last nights in Tampa and I needed some Mexican food. I was craving it and my boyfriend decided that this was a good place to go. Well... the waitstaff was very nonchalant. The establishment was very inviting and the food was very mediocre. I bought guacamole, chips, shrimp tacos, black beans, and Mexican rice. The rice was very dry, the black beans were good. However, the shrimp tacos were a bust. The shrimp was dry like it was grilled too long. The corn tortilla was very chewy. I know it is supposed to be right? But can it be hot and chewy, please? The chips were supposed to be homemade chips but I know they tasted store-bought and stale. The best thing about the meal was the gauc and black beans. He thinks Tijuana flats are 10 times better and twice as cheap. My daughter and 2 grandkids joined us so there was a total of 5 people for $90.00 (avg. of $18. Each) plus a hefty tip for Mexican food seems a bit expensive. If it was extraordinary maybe, but it wasn't. Can't recommend unless you just love Mexican food at steakhouse prices. read more

They give you a LOT of FLAVORFUL food. The service was excellent, the food was better than any of its kind.

For me to be disappointed in Mexican food, it had to be pretty bad. I was disappointed. It was soggy, messy looking and tasted very bland. My del Rey burrito tasted like it had a can of Hunts tomato sauce poured over it and no spice. The California burrito my fiancé had had much the same issues. My stepson had the enchiladas , he wasn't impressed. All in all, at almost $60 for this food plus tip, I have to say I'll never eat here again. read more

Ordered takeout and got a chimichanga which was super soggy and bland. Nachos which were very bland Cheese enchiladas which my daughter loved. I used to love this place but the price and the food were sub par. I think the styrofoam takeout containers aided in making everything soggy and lukewarm. I went here with my brother last night since he is a huge fan of the chips and homemade salsa. He advised me that the combo meals were the way to go, so I started perusing those! I read in some of the reviews that the chile rellenos were so wing I had to try, so I looked for combos with that. I ended up ordering the carne asada combo which came with: a generous portion of thin, tender carne asada, a spinach enchilada, and a chile relleno. I really enjoyed the carne asada. The spinach enchilada was just okay, lots of spinach, I wish there was some cheese in it. The chile relleno was different, but delicious. I have never had one that was flat before. There was a ton of food,Mao I ended up with leftovers. I thought it was cool that you get to pick your sides. I ordered a side salad and rice. The rice had a lot of flavor. I also ordered a melon margarita. I wasn't a fan of the melon flavoring they used. The margarita was good overall. It was a huge margarita for $7. Great place for Mexican love getting the free chips and salsa great atmosphere and the staff is always very nice.

I used to really enjoy this place. Last three times we have went the portions keep getting smaller, no one ever comes back to refill the chips and salsa and sometimes even drinks. That being said the food is still pretty solid tasting, but couple that with bad service and small portions and it can go down hill fast. In general if this place is the only thing near by go ahead and try it. I hope you get lucky and the service is great that day! read more

I order the shredded beef burrito- which arrived as described in the menu - more like small tacos covered in cheese and sauce. The food was good - just not over the top tasty or fresh tasting. Margaritas - despite the wall art above our table which featured the "authentic" recipe- they aren't made following the "authentic recipe " (see photo). They settle for simple syrup and mix. The chips and salsa were good. I requested hot sauce and a separate "hotter" salsa was quickly placed on the table. Of the Carmelitas locations I've visited - this one doesn't take the prize. We ordered from Carmelita's through Door Dash this evening. We both ordered enchiladas with rice and refried beans. When our order arrived, we received French fries instead of rice with my husband's cheese enchiladas and there was no sauce on his enchiladas at all. They were dry and he couldn't eat them. I did check my order on Door Dash and I clearly ordered both with rice and beans. Very disappointed. We go to Carmelita's often and have always enjoyed their food. read more

Strip Mall Mexican Got here at 1115. Opened at 11. Wasnt greeted. Staff were still opening up. Not prepared for customers at all. Sat st the bar and the older woman that I thought was a bartender (ended up being the manager) kept doing her duties not paying attention at all. Sat there for about 4 minutes until I I requested a tea and some chips. She brought them out after a few minutes and then walked in the back to continue whatever she was doing. Came out about 10 minutes later and asked what I wanted. Told her just my check. She was upset when I explained the lack of attention and time frame for service. I used to regularly go to the Carmelita's in Dunedin and the food was always amazing! They had the best chips and salsa and my regular go to food was Enchiladas. Today I ordered food from the Carmelita's in Pinellas Park and the food was absolutely terrible. The enchiladas were dry and it was like they put 2 tablespoons of sauce on the top. The chicken was also dry. The rice was cold and hard. Actually all my food was cold. I definitely will not be going to this restaurant in the future. I would not recommend them. read more

This is my second favorite location now... I question the "not authentic Mexican" reviews here? Carmelita's is not authentic, and that's a good thing. It's Tex-Mex. Most outside of the SWest US, were never exposed to real Mex until a few years ago. Besides, you can get that authentic Mex now in a bunch of local, trendy joints. So if you mostly enjoy assorted meat on a floppy raw corn tortilla, topped with only raw onion and a pile of cilantro? You took a wrong turn finding this joint! Carmelita's is our local "KING" of the Americanized Tex-Mex food you grew up with! As for the menu stand-outs? Their simple refried beans beat the sombreros and serapes right off of ALL the other "authentic" Mex joints in our area. Seriously! Senor or Bus Who? Carmelita's refrieds are not only creamy but have a depth from being made with lard or bacon fat? You can taste that meaty goodness in every bite! Decadent... Plus call me crazy, but sometimes I really enjoy the simple "gringo" tacos from my youth. Almost like I make at home, meaning a CRISPY corn tortilla shell, ground beef, and lettuce/tomato/cheese. Carmelita's are always the very best in our area, and I've sampled many. Carmelita's also has great shredded pork tamales if you care for more traditional Mex fare. My favorite authentic Mexican dish is mole negro. Hoping to find an amazing one here is like hoping to see a giraffe at SeaWorld... Finally, the real menu secret here is their "kitchen special." It's just simple shredded beef, slow simmered in a complex sauce, served over rice with tortillas on the side. Yelp has given me a badge informing that I eat too much Mexican food. It also states that apparently burritos are not a food group. Despite Yelp's clear attempt at an intervention, I still checked out Carmelita's. Very, very good! The plates are heaping, and the dishes are insanely filling. EVERYTHING was on point. And added to this, their frozen margaritas and sangria are muy bueno. My only complaint is the location. This joint is very easy to pass up because it doesn't stand out. read more

3.5 stars for Carmelita's. If you like margaritas, you need to come here! I mean seriously, I've become a margarita lover over the years and this restaurant had one of the best margs I've ever tasted! I had their basic version called The Gold margarita. The food was alright, pretty average. I enjoyed their warm chips and mild salsa. I had shrimp tacos which came nude with 4 grilled shrimp and a small side plate of toppings (shredded lettuce, a glob of guac, shredded cheese, and diced tomato). The tacos came with your choice of 2 sides, I went with the Mexican rice and corn. Again, pretty darn bland. There was no heat on the sides or the shrimp. It was pretty busy inside but the service was acceptable. I'd come back here again, but probably for just the margs to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I love Carmelita's, but this location was not all that great. I arrived at lunchtime and it was quite empty. My server was fine-attentive but not overbearing. I was given the chips and salsa-the salsa tastes different here. Not nearly as good as the original on Park Street. My beef enchiladas didn't come out piping hot either. I could touch the plate, which I shouldn't be able to considering they put the plates under the broiler to melt the cheese. Next time I'm craving Carmelita's, I'll stick to the original. read more

Not the best Tex Mex around by any means, but I find their food to be at least consistently average. Some of their sauces are packed with flavor, like the rich brown sauced (a play on mole maybe?) stewed beef they serve on their dinner special, but the shredded chicken and ground beef are so bland, if you don't douse it in some kind of sauce, salsa, or sour cream, it's almost inedible. The portions for their lunch and dinner range from fair to generous, and are certainly a good value for the price point. Their salsa is surprisingly delicious, and the complementary chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal is very much appreciated. I'll admit, I come here much more often than I'd chose to due to the fact my girlfriend loves this place, but I usually can find something that I enjoy. That being said I've come here enough to know what to avoid! read more
