I had heard from several sources that this was one of the best Mexican Places in St.Pete. I'm from California, so I was excited to try it out! Nothing had any flavor! The refried beans had no taste, not to mention my main dish. I'm sorry but if this is what people from Florida think is the best... I might have to import some real Mexicans from Southern Cali. I really don't want to tell anyone about this place. I want to keep it to myself. This is located in a touristy area (Gulf Blvd) but the tourists AND locals are in for a treat!!!! We had the fundido, which was loaded with chorizo and bubbling when we got it. Oh so good!!!!! I had the chimichanga and Bill had the enchilada. We ended up switching because the enchilada had veggies in it. Both were pretty tasty, but the fundido and margaritas stole the show. I would definitely recommend this hide away for tourists and locals to stop in and enjoy the ambiance, drinks and food. The wait staff are so nice and accommodating. Awful! To start our experience normally when we go to a Mexican restuarant we are provided with on the house chips but none were brought & I was fine with paying with some. The salsa wasn't a salsa it was more like a pico. I am Hispanic and when I asked for the chimichanga I asked for it with beans and rice our server made fun of how I said it but I didn't say anything. We ordered our food & when it came out we were astonished by the way it looked but I wanted to give it a try. I have been to multiple Mexican restaurants including Mexico. When I ate my pozole it had no flavor. The chimichanga tasted like flour and they forgot the beans and rice and it had no cheese. My fiancés "burrito" was a wrap. I decided that my pozole was not eatable and my fiancé and mother in law chose to eat theirs as we had a long trip to get to the restaurant . When our server came to pick up the food that's when she asked how the food was we told her about how we didn't like it and she didn't say anything. I'm not one to complaint but I asked for the manager. Her first words were wow and I'm sorry but this isn't a Colombian restaurant this is a Mexican restaurant at no point did I mention to her it was Colombian. I further proceeded to tell her I didn't feel okay paying for mediocre food or the mandatory tip which she said you just don't want to spend money & I knew nothing about Mexican food.. That's right, I'm not in Texas anymore. They were tasty, but that's a super tiny bowl of salsa. Sticking with my trend for the past few days, I went with the fish tacos, grilled. Forgot to ask on the fish, but I think it was snapper. Very tasty. Other plates I sampled were good too. Tip: If there's a long wait, El Agave Bar is right next door. Perfect place to wait, and maybe shoot a quick game of pool. Bottom line: Good choice if you are craving Mexican and don't want to venture off the beach, St. Pete Beach. We had two Mexican places recommended to us by a server at another restaurant. The one with the higher Yelp reviews had a 45 minute wait at 8pm, so we bailed and went to Agave. I didn't want to go due to the Yelp rating. I'm glad we went. I can't remember the name of what I ordered, but it was essentially carne guisada with potatoes. Holy smokes that was good. Tortillas were hand made. They have a number of salsas and one was very hot. I had the opposite experience as others with the service. They were still fairly busy for being so close to closing, and we were well tended to. I was not impressed with the margaritas. We asked for frozen. They don't have a machine so they were made with ice in the blender. If they were heavy on the tequila, I couldn't taste it. The lime flavor was a little light too. Is half a star even possible? We're here on vacation and decided to stop by. Our waitress was not at all attentive to us, but was with other customers. She's Latina and we're latino as well. When we ordered, we would speak to her in Spanish as she did to us. She would respond in Spanglish knowing well that she's full blown Hispanic. Her service was terrible!!! Never bothered to stop by our table to ask if we're ok or needed anything else. She did stop by other tables where Caucasian's were eating and was very friendly, even family like to them. The food was very salty, the horchata was not home made and the fact that we can't mix and match orders because they're portioned for the day is not a good idea.......... over all, I would never visit this place and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone at all! read more

We decided to try this restaurant out. Despite the mixed reviews. Every time we drive by, the place is hopping so we wanted to form our own opinions. We sat at the bar, which may have improved our service but Brianna was the only one behind the bar and she was hustling and still managed to meet all of our needs. The food was authentic and delicious! We loved the margaritas, queso fundido, the spicy steak and the changa for dessert. Great street tacos - served by friendly staff! The carnitas are one of my favorites! Have nearly tried them all.

The staff is extremely attentive and engaging. The atmosphere is soothing and music level is just at the right level. We were able to enjoy a nice conversation. Agave restaurant serves by far the best Mexican food in the U.S. They are as good as it gets when it comes to flavorful Mexican cuisine. I used to think the only way to get the real thing was to go to Mexico but Agave Restaurant is the real deal. Everything they serve here is authentic and delicious. My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant on the beach. When you walk in ,push , don't pull LOL. If you know you know. As soon as you enter the owners wife or one of the nice servers will bring to you with the hola and ask you where you'd like to sit. The menu is pretty basic. Tacos burritos enchiladas fajitas. But my constant go to is the cheese Chile relleños, two on a plate, with extra red sauce with rice and beans. Every once in a while I will order the tortilla soup and add chicken. It is enough for two meals. Definitely start with the trio of chips salsa, quest and guacamole. They bring out three nice homemade hot salsa! . We came From out of town was recommended this restaurant by our hotel. 1st of all I ordered the fajita trio when the cajistas came the steak looked like shaved steak that would go on a philly cheese steak and the fajitas where not even sizzling as you would expect from authentic Mexican fajitas. I have eaten better fajitas from chilis which is a franchise restaurant. 2nd we ordered top Shelf margaritas we received our drinks that had zero alcohol in it. I spoke to the manager and addressed the situation who became instantly defensive. I paid for the bill in full Which that was never the issue. I have enjoyed Agave a few times in the past, food is decent and margarita where good. Today we went midafternoon, sat outside with our little white fluff ball. It took over 10 mins for the girl to approach our table (it wasn't busy). We ordered two margaritas, water and water for the dog. She stated she could get water for the dog. The food was ok the issues we had as a party of 6 (4 adults and 2 kids) was ; 1 the margaritas were weak. I ordered the top shelf alcohol and I'm a super light weight and felt zero buzz. All the adults agreed. 2 when the checks came they had added a 20% tip in when I checked the line item receipt. I'm guessing because we were a party of 6? But when I looked at the customer slip it said pre-tip amount. I felt this was misleading at best and illegal at worst. When we brought this up to the manager she something about it was in the menus. Okay, just to start off. I was not starving when we went here. Visiting relatives and they suggested Agave and said it was great. They understated great. My plate of enchiladas was so incredible, everyone at the table tried it. I frequent Mexican Food restaurants in Texas and this place knocked them out of the water. My wife is visually impaired and her service dog was denied access to the interior of restaurant by the owner. We tried to explain the ADA regulations and show the service dog's certification in a polite manner but were very rudely told to wait for outside table or leave. We travel and dine out frequently and have never had a worse experience. This was shared with the owner but she could have cared less. We came to St Pete Beach to stay next door at the Postcard Inn and were quite disappointed with the area. It's not the nicest neighborhood between the construction and locals. Since we aren't from the area, we weren't aware of the reputation. We ended up stopping by the Agave Bar next door and speaking with the really friendly owner there. He suggested eating dinner here. I'm a big fan of Mexican food and noticed that there were plenty of vegan options. We came in kind of late, just before closing and it took the staff a while to get us seated and we had to ask them to clean off the table they seated us at outside. The hosted came by a good 10 mins later and wiped it with a dirty rag. Considering all of the cleanliness orders these days, the table definitely did meet criteria. It was just as sticky as the menus. When our food came out shortly after ordering, mine was somewhat cold. I could tell that the veggies were all previously frozen and just thrown together. The sauce was very flavorful and while it was tasty, it's definitely not a high quality joint. Not sure if I'd be recommending this restaurant to any of my family and friends but I also can't say that it was the worst experience I had in the area. read more
