As an amateur bike enthusiast, it is great to find a bike shop with the inventory, knowledge, and engagement of Agee's Bicycle South of the river in Richmond, VA. Two technicians spent the better part of a half an hour walking my girlfriend and I through the different brake component technologies on the market. It was wonderful at the end of our walk-through to find that they "solved" my girlfriend's braking problem by making some adjustments to her existing components and reassuring her about the integrity and capability of the existing brake set. They matched her to some good bike shorts (a HARD sell for a new female cyclist) and a sharp looking safe helmet, and they helped me find the right pedal set for my needs as well as a good pair of recessed bike shoes. I think that the bike that they helped me with is going to become my permanent Wahoo Kickr setup--it's seen enough abuse and crashes. When the time comes to upgrade to a real road machine I know where I will go in Richmond. read more

I went in to see about buying new rims for Rockhopper because I hate Presta valves. The salesman said it made more sense to modify the rim, it's cost prohibitive to buy new rims for that purpose. He told me they do that there. I brought the bike back, it was a different guy, he said he would look into it. I said only change the presta tubes if the mod can't be done . I came back and there were presta tubes on it. I asked why they didn't do the conversion, the same guy told me "I told you we don't do that service." I said no, you did not. You said you had to ask about it. It was clear he did not. He dismissed that. I would have taken it somewhere else. Their loss though, I was thinking of selling the Rockhopper and getting a comfort bike, which will not be at Agee's now. I don't like being lied about to. read more

It appears that Agee's Bicycles has joined the ranks of other businesses who are not concerned with customer service and supporting the products they sale, once the sale is complete. While the sales associate will give you all of the time in a day to facilitate the sell, standing behind the product thereafter....not a concern. My fault for returning to Agee's (after moving out of state) to make the purchase. I erroneously felt confident I would be in good hands. A brand new bike was purchased. First ride was 5 days thereafter. Noticed the rear tire was low so air was added. 1/4 mile down the road, the tire was flat. The tube was compromised and required replacing. Additionally, the left hand brake was not functioning properly. Took the bike to my local bike shop to check the tire and brake. A new tube was required and the brakes had to be bled. Brand new bike. Upon contacting Agee to share my experience and request reimbursement for the repairs, in so many words ... it wasn't their problem. Lesson learned? Don't buy a bike out of state and certainly don't give Agee's any more of my money. Very disappointing to have had this experience from a business who has received many accolades throughout the years. read more

Here's a summation of my interaction with Agee's. These are not quotes but general ideas. Me: Can I bring my bike in for a tune-up? Agees: Sure! It'll take one to two days. Me: Great! I arrive with the bike and my son. It's his bike. It's getting tuned up for a mountain biking camp Agees: Oh, we can't work on that bike. Me: Why not? Agees: It's built to a price point so won't hold a tune. I.E it's too cheap and wasn't bought at Agee's. Me: Why not do it anyway and if what you say is true, we'll find out. I won't get upset. You warned me. Agees: Yeah, well that bike is built to a price point (They said 3 times while refusing to perform the work they said they would do in the first place.) So yeah. Offered to help but turns out they're too good to work on my son's bike. Funny thing. The bike we have has the same frame specs as the bikes they sell. Also, the frame welds look practically identical. It feels like Agee's was just attempting to punish us for not buying there. Joke's on them. I've bought 3 bicycles there in my lifetime. No more. If they can't earn my business now, they won't have it again. Enjoy your elitism. You've run off another customer. Seems that's a habit because on a busy shopping day, no one was there. Also, the lowest rated bike shop in Richmond and surrounding areas per Yelp and Google reviews. Go to Outpost in Forest Hill. They'll happily work on your bike and not look down their nose at you like the elitists at Agee's will. read more

After spending a few days at a local Trek Store and receiving excellent customer service, I'd expected the same when I visited Agee's. I did pay about $730 for the bike plus paid an additional $15 for a kickstand so why would I expect anything less. Many had recommended the Trek Dual Sport 2 for trail riding. I'd called several bike stores from D.C. to Hampton Roads in search of a women's Trek Dual Sport 2. Purchased it over the phone and picked up the bike a few days later. Shared my enthusiasm with the store representative that I've joined a bike club and was looking for assistance with using the gears on the bike, the maintenance of the bike and that I also needed a bike rack. I practically begged for service. After being annoyed, I threw my bike and rack in my trunk and went to the Trek store I previously visited for assistance. By the way, did I mention that because I have a women's bike that I had to purchase the tube top adapter to use the rack I purchased? Therefore, I rate the Agee's Midlothian location a 1 and have shared with others my experience. read more

My Husband and I came to Agees to find me a used or reasonably priced bike either for road biking or mountain biking, whichever is found cheapest. When we entered we were greeted directly and asked if we needed help, After saying we were just looking around and needed no help, the man who greeted us continued to try to sell us on different types of bikes. Ugh He showed us all the different bikes they had available in road bikes all of which were insanely expensive. They don't carry any used or vintage bikes for sale at reasonable cost. They will service your bike if you've bought from another store or private buyer, but made sure to mention that they will no "fit" you for said bike. *eye roll. I was biking this Labor Day Weekend on the Capitol Trail with a friend, and Manning helped us fix both of our bikes (because we clearly weren't prepared). Just by chance, we asked him and his family if they had some tools/bike pump, and Manning opened the back of his car to literally a miniature bike repair shop. He helped my friend pump up her tires, as well as de-tangled my chain a few minutes later. He even had to take the wheel off and make some adjustments to the gears mid-parking lot. I usually get my tune ups done here as well Every purchase was great experience. My purchase of my own road bike was a wonderful experience as well. The salesman let me try out all price range bikes and spent about 2 hours with me. I ended up purchasing over $1000 with the bike and accessories. Great experience with my purchase. The salesman says bring it back after a good ride and get a free tuneup. It was October so the weather prevented me from any riding until Spring. After a few good 25 mile rides, the low gears began to slip and the handlebar wrapping came undone. I brought the bike back in and explained my situation. After some discussions they covered everything. The $400 I spent on a bike is a waste. They did not attach all of the parts to my bicycle on assembly and routed my chain wrong as well. I have taken the bike back once already to have the derailleurs and jockey wheels in the back replaced after only riding the bike 20 miles on the roads of Fort Lee, VA. Driving the 40 miles one way for them to fix the other things wrong with my bike (the front is still out of adjustment and I throw my chain off of the bike when I use my pushbutton shifting). The gentleman who sold me the bike I am not pleased with either. I had faith in him, as a salesman to properly size me to the bicycle after requesting he do so. When my chain seized in the rear due to improper routing (on the assembler part), I was ejected from my seat. My feet landed solidly on the ground with my legs locked (in an effort to protect my groin). When my feet contacted the ground, my groin and male parts contacted the bar solidly with all of my body weight. And they wonder why I was pissed when I drove my bike there immediately. read more

Super disappointed in this place, Took my bike in for regular service, which should of only cost around $40 and taking about 30 minutes to complete and did get my bike back by the end of the day but I was charged $100. Which makes they're hourly rate around $200 per hour! Folks I had nothing replaced on my bike this was strictly all labor! I bought a Trek FX 7.1 from Agees. I must fist say that I did research this bike and knew exactly what I wanted when I went into the shop. The customer service could use some improvement. However I have not had any issues with my bike and have put a little over 250 miles on it. Their prices are very competitive and their selection of bikes within each type and pricing tier are the best in Richmond. Stay clear of this "Bike Shop". Purchased a new expensive bike from this shop and they can not figure out how to put it together correctly. The chain constantly locks or falls of during shifting. Brought it back up there and they can't find an issue, but yet I can't ride it more than 20 feet in the parking lot before the chain has issues again. Now I am stuck bringing this bike to another real bike shop down the road in order to get it put together and adjusted correctly. I should of read the reviews before buying anything here! read more

I took a chance and stopped in Agee's was cheerfully greeted as I entered and was referred to a pleasant young man who was knowledgable and checked online to make sure it matched and alerted me to a way it needed to have the straps mounted to my car and walked me outside to my car to make sure I understood!! I was pleasantly surprised how friendly and helpful the sales staff was when I came in just to browse at the bicycles. After explaining my needs and my budget, the salesperson showed me several bicycles that were in my price range. I looked at each one and and was given a brief rundown about the features of each model, and when I had specific questions, they cheerfully answered. I did ask one question about a particular bike and the salesperson was honest enough to admit that they did not know, then they promptly asked another staff member to come over to help me. Eventually I picked a bike out and thought I could just take it with me since it appeared to be a excellent working condition, but they still wanted to give it a final inspection before I took it home. During the whole experience I was never pressured to buy anything. I did inquire about a few accessories and even though I only bought one, I felt like they were not pressuring me to buy anything more. I will whole hearted recommend Agee's to anyone who is looking to buy a bicycle to at least give this place a chance. read more

THEY WILL NOT SUPPORT PRODUCTS! I bought high end Bontrager cycle shoes, spending well over $100. Within 3 weeks an eyelet for the shoelace broke apart. It was loose and rubbing while I rode. I did not save the box or receipt as I thought the product would last longer than 3 weeks and a local shop would have decent customer service. When I returned with them to the store, they would not help me nor did they offer to make the SIMPLE repair. Instead, I was told I needed both receipt and original box in order to do anything. I would highly recommend you sizing your cycle shoes here and buying ELSEWHERE. I am in the market for a road bike, after this experience I would never consider purchasing here. My husband, kids and I were so excited to ride in the moon light bike ride this past weekend- only to discover when we got there that my husbands bike was not working well and that we forgot the white lights we needed to participate in the race. if i could give agees zero stars i would. easily the worst shopping experience i have ever had. the bicycle i purchased from them has had to be serviced and repaired ELEVEN times in 4months which speaks to the quality of their product. each time their customer service guy says its something that can be easily fixed but within two or three days the same problem returns, which speaks to the competence of their service department. BUYER BEWARE: they refuse to refund my money for the lemon that they sold me nor will they replace it. as of now it would be unfair to say that i "purchased" from agees.
