The next stop on Astoria's Best Greek Restaurants continues on an absolutely gorgeous, over the top, incredibly beautiful early August evening. I've not counted just how many there are, by quick visual mapping the morning after, it's gotta be easily hovering around the twenty-five mark. First comes the tables bread the Greek Salad immediately follows with beautifully ripened and deep fleshed tomatoes set upon pool cue sized creamy Feta. The dips then arrived, what I've learned in my tour is that you can't fake the tzatkiti. With my Greek girlfriend always looking to puch the best in my direction. This has always been one of my favorite Greek Restaurants. Have been coming here for decades, ever since it opened there doesn't seem much to complain about here, A consistently good quality restaurant. The outdoor seating just steps away from Astoria Park bring a bit of the Greek tavern experience to Queens. But Agnati has one thing the other restaurants don't and that a quiet location where you can enjoy an evening meal in relative peace. We started with a Greek salad which on a hot summer night was the right call: it was cold, fresh and had the perfect Feta cheese. The show stopper here was the tomatoes, they taste like my home grown (thanks to Grow USA organic) tomatoes. Next up was the dip platter, solid play here although they could have had a bit more pita bread. Followed by the crispy calamari and the best kolokithokeftes (zucchini fritters) I've had anywhere Top those babies with some Tsatsiki and OPA! The calamari was breaded and thick and crunchy with fresh and not frozen calamari. perfect! The zucchini fritters were perfectly crispy on the outside and the right bit of tender flaky Zuni inside. And they come hot as can be. Try them you won't regret it The lamb chops were ordered medium and they did come over cooked so pro tip here. Ask a step down of what you would normal want your redness factor to be. Four to a plate they also were a-bit on the thin side but they were delicious! This is a really good Greek restaurant right by Astoria Park. We got here on a Sunday afternoon and after a warm greeting were given the option of inside or outside seating. Opted for the interior. The entire staff from the greeter to our wonderful and fun server were stellar- they were happy and full of love. The food -we got a few sides to start - the grilled vegetables were exquisite: just done and seasoned so well. I loved the bean dip as also the garlic dip. The side of Lima beans also was tasty and in a very unique sauce. We opted for the Branzino which was enough for two( photo). It was grilled and perfect. FYI please be aware of the bones. So full we had no room for dessert and they brought us some comp cookies which was nice. Th atmosphere was fun - we were in the back and with one bathroom the line would form and move next to us. Made some friends who were on that line. Definitely Five Stars for great food, even better service and smiles and a fun and buzzing atmosphere. We'll be back to try the other delicacies on the awesome menu and sit outside enjoying more lovely Astoria and NYC views. read more

One day I was taking a stroll in Astoria Park and I met this older gentleman who raved about Agnanti. He was not wrong about it! I took the family to dinner Friday night and we absolutely loved the atmosphere and all our dishes. Not pictured the Sigar Bourek we ate those up! Only got appetizers but it was so good. Food came out insanely fast. No cocktails but they do have wine. Tomatoes in the salad were exploding with juice. Insane. Fat chunks of feta. Lil cucumber. Agnanti is a hop, skip and a jump away from our home that we don't take advantage of going to nearly enough. Located right at the entrance of beautiful Astoria Park, it is a cozy little corner spot to enjoy delicious food and drink good wine amongst family and friends. We came on a cold, rainy Friday night at the beginning of service. Didn't want to take the chance of coming too late and not being able to get a seat or feeling too cramped if it was crowded. Right away we were seated (first ones there) and brought warm bread. We heard the specials, read the menu and since I had been craving this for weeks, already knew that I wanted everything in site. Lol For appetizer we split a small Greek salad and the Shrimp Kataifi. 4 shrimp wrapped in finely shredded phyllo bathed in a delicious mustard sauce. You cannot go wrong. So delicious and the tangy sauce hit every note on every taste bud. Highly recommend. I had the Pastichio special with lemon potatoes. Nice and creamy. Very filling. Lacked a bit of flavor. I wanted something bold and in your face. This dish didn't do it for me on this night. Good nonetheless. They both had the Chicken Tigania plate. For some reason, they didn't have pork. So they settled on chicken. Mainly because they brought out two chicken rather than telling the one who ordered pork that there wasn't any. Still, no complaints. The French fries were seasoned nicely and very lemony. The only gripe was the fries were a bit soggy. I'm guessing due to the lemon? Either way, still very delicious. Air fried the leftovers and crisped up the fries to perfection. We all got very full, very fast. Service was impeccable. Complimentary dessert of chocolate cookies and the most delicious crumbly halvah was yummy. Maybe even more yummy because it was free. So so good. Long story short, highly recommend. Have not been to Greece yet however felt like I was transported to Greece when we went to Agnati. The most authentic vibe and food. Great service on a busy Friday night, the servers explained the menu thoroughly. Started the dinner with bread and delicious olive oil. For starters we ordered Fava with pita and chicken croquettes which were unbelievable. The tzakiki was fresh and homemade. For mains we ordered mousakka, lamb with lemon sauce which was tender and fall off the bone with a side of lemon potatoes. We also ordered the red snapper with a side of rice. We came on a Thursday at 7pm and there was about a 15min wait for the inside seating. The staff there are Greeks so you know that the good was going to be authentic! We ordered: Grilled Swordfish: Cooked super tender, melt in your mouth olive oil, with a bed of onions and peppers Grilled octopus: flavor not super distinct but was cooked in a tender way Baked saganaki cheese: This was flavorful and had some tomatoes to go with it Meatballs with tzatziki: I might have skipped this one as there was nothing to write home about Free dessert! The biscuit infused piece was DELISH. I wish I knew what it was I had a pleasant experience, loved the ambiance, and the food was great. Idk if we ordered wrong or something but sooooo disappointing. Got the grape leaves, eggplant dip, lemon lamb stew and grilled porgy. Appetizers were super average, stew was ok but I had to ask for extra lemons and add salt to everything to get the flavor up. The porgy was borderline inedible, the meat itself tasted bad. Agnanti is a quaint Greek restaurant right beside Astoria Park with ample outdoor seating and tastefully decorated to create an a vibe of relaxing in a café/restaurant around the Mediterranean! Agnanti is the type of restaurant where you can stay for a long time eating/drinking/socializing without the pressure to turn over the table. When you are ready to leave, just ask for your check, but before that time you are family! Service is outstanding and all the servers were top notch, friendly, and very professional. During this visit we brought our new granddaughter (quietly sleeping in the stroller) along with our son and daughter in law. The severs were very accommodating and chatted with us about our family. It was nice to feel welcomed in a restaurant. Now to the food. We ordered a variety of dishes to share/sample and were very impressed with the flavors, presentation, and quality of food. Agnanti focuses on the high quality of ingredients in the preparation of the dishes, which enhances the overall simplicity of the dishes, to create mouth-watering food being served. On this visit we sampled: the stuffed grape leaves, grilled calamari, roasted eggplant spread, Bekri Meze (chunks of meat in a tomato sauce), and the Shrimp Giouvetsi (baked shrimp with feta and tomatoes). Everything was delicious and very flavorful. The Bekri Meza chunks were tender and the grilled calamari was charred and buttery. The highlight of the entire meal was the Shrimp Giouvetsi, which was one of the best dishes I have eaten in a long time! I enjoyed it so much that I started to look for recipes to try at home until I could return to Agnanti to eat again. I reposted here the same review I left on Google maps: The owner of this restaurant physically assaulted my friend while we were dining there last night. Instead of calmly coming to talk to us about one of the dogs barking, she instead went 0-100 in front of all the outside guests. We had to call the cops to come because she smacked the phone out of my friends hand and then kicked her in the shin later on. They removed our food while we were still eating and then claimed to the cops that we didn't pay our bill. We have video footage of her verbally calling us lowlife b****, etc and of her physically smacking and kicking my friend. As an Astoria resident I can't let this go because NO BUSINESS owner should assault someone unprovoked and get away with this sort of behavior. They do not deserve community support/business if this is how they're going to treat guests. They need to be held accountable. Please reconsider supporting them and definitely do not bring your dog there. read more

Interesting. I was just coming here to post about an experience, and see that a Christine below had a similar experience. In my instance, I had not eaten at Agnanti on this night. I hardly ever eat there, so none of the staff would know my face. However, I happened to be in the vicinity, and then needed to use a bathroom. I am a senior female, and most people with a brain understand that situations like this are more serious for older women. We can't just take a quick pee behind a tree or something... This was on a RAINY night when very few people were walking around. In other words, it wasn't as if this was a day or time when there were tons of random people possibly bothering Agnanti for their bathroom. It was just little old me. So imagine my dismay when I politely asked a FEMALE worker there 'is it possible that I can use your bathroom?' and was FLATLY told 'no, it's for customers only'. Everyone knows that that is a 'standard line' that is used, for SPECIFIC instances (homeless people, a person who seems mentally unhinged, a person who appears strung out on drugs, etc.). Common sense should have told that female employee that there was not going to be a rash of other people trying to use the bathroom. (It was a RAINY night...) I don't smell bad or use drugs. I'm a regular Astorian. Thankfully, Niko's Souvlaki, up the block, was much more considerate and didn't hesitate to let me use their bathroom. Wow. read more

Agnanti is the BEST restaurant in New York for comfort food. In other words they cook their food in the original traditional Greek way in a brick oven using I believe - wood for heating the oven. It's marvelous both in winter and summer - although I prefer it in winter to be honest. It's elegant and cozy and The location on the corner of Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria Park is beautiful for a stroll after dinner, Additionally when you're waiting in line (as it's often TOO popular) - if you ask for a glass of wine - they'll serve your glass of wine and you can have a glass of wine as you're waiting in line !! How much more civilized can you get for God's sake? Come hungry !! I recommend starving yourself for a day or so before coming here !! Hehehe !! (just joking of course) The ingredients they use are totally authentic and totally the best! I recommend some of their (tzatziki) made of Greek yoghourt, chopped cucumbers, garlic and olive oil - with some of their fresh bread to dunk into it and a typical (Horiatiki salata) Greek salad. I ordered Chicken Souvlaki & Lemon Potatoes & spanakopita/spinach pie, he ordered Shrimp Kataifi and beef burek Chicken souvlaki- some pieces were very good, juicy, tender, good sear. Some pieces were very undercooked. Would have liked some consistency. Lemon potatos-more flavor of olive oil than lemon flavor, not much lemon flavor, but the potatos are cooked well. Would have preferred more lemon flavor. Spanakopita-ok, needed more cooking, still partly cold, more doughy than typical flaky filo pastry though. Beef burek- can taste the cloves in the meat, slightly too salty. The cloves are good, but salt not. Shrimp Kataifi-tasted way too greasy Overall: I'll come here if I have to for a family event. But not of my own choice. The souvlaki was inconsistent and certainly not worth $15. The Spanakopita wasn't all that great either and definitely not worth $13. The quality of the food for the price wasn't there, there is better elsewhere. read more

Going to a place like this, you see the clear difference between the little Greek spot for Gyros and actual Greek/Mediterranean food. I see some other reviews commenting on the size or atmosphere, It's supposed to be a small place with people who not only eat there but spend time hanging out and drinking wine, not to mention, many of the patrons there were speaking Greek, always a good sign. Service is solid and attentive and the seafood is fresh. I hadn't been there in a few years but it was as good as I remember. We got the catch of the day which was the whole Black Sea bass, and the Aegean seafood pasta, also got the grilled octopus appetizer which probably the best thing on the table, fantastic. Just had an excellent anniversary meal at Agnanti the food and the service were great. Had the grilled octopus, chicken, croquettes with tzatziki sauce, and lamb with lemon drenched potatoes. The overall meal was tasty and inviting and very flavorful the atmosphere of the place at the time we went which was late afternoon at around 4:30 PM was quiet somber mildly Busy, but not overcrowded for a Wednesday. The wait staff were attentive, friendly, and attended to our needs. They did forget part of our meal, but in the end we were kind of happy because it gives us an excuse to come back and try more of the food and service. would definitely recommend coming here for a great meal and a great time while enjoying the rustic ambience of the restaurant very old world, Greek feel. I had a very spontaneous "linner" here with my mom on a recent Sunday. Having lived basically up the street from the establishment for some 6 months now, I walk past it every morning on my way to the train and hurriedly peak inside the sleepy, closed restaurant through the closed sidewalk glass-case (in the cold months)/outside area. We were seated inside, as we could see that a huge party was seated in the aforementioned magical area. But inside - oh my gosh, the decor is so cute! I was feeling the old time Greek charm with the hospitality and service to match! Working to quell the nerves of the crowd and still honor her promise of our table, the kind woman who seated us (and appeared to be the owner) allowed us to sit before our friends arrived. In today's restaurant business, where establishments need to consistently churn through guests to make a return (especially in NYC where rents are astronomical), it's these kinds of "human-first" gestures that set one establishment apart from the rest. We (a group of four) ordered the tzatziki (with extra pita), spanakopita, saganaki, and a large Greek salad to start. We decided to share everything, and the portions were certainly adequate. For our main course, we all split a chicken souvlaki platter (which comes with a large heap of their delicious tzatziki) and a whole Porgy fish special. Everything was excellent, and the vistas of Astoria Park never fail to provide a bucolic backdrop. The only negative we experienced was that the large Greek salad we ordered never arrived. However, with the rest of the food being so delicious and abundant, we didn't mind much (not sure whether the salad was taken off the bill or not, and again, I blame the wine). Our waitress was so sweet and patient with us, and despite clearly working a large number of tables, she still took the time to make our experience feel inviting. Like any good taverna, a complimentary taste of Greek delights is offered to each table at the end of the meal, providing a sweet close to a wonderful experience.
