The Greek salad was good, although it's hard to really mess up a Greek salad. The meat platter, however, was way overpriced and had far too much lamb for our liking. The lobster pasta was $80, which again, felt overpriced for what we received. The restaurant was also extremely quiet when we were there. There were only three tables occupied for dinner, although perhaps it's a completely different atmosphere on the weekends. Unfortunately, this place just didn't live up to the expectations we had going in. Came here on Mother's Day while we were in the area and were happy they had availability. Everyone was very friendly, and the decor was amazing. The atmosphere and overall vibe inside were great. We started with the salmon tartare, which was okay. I was expecting a bit more salmon, but it had more guacamole than I anticipated. The octopus, however, was cooked to perfection absolutely loved it, and the presentation was beautiful. We also tried the dark ale lamb chops. They were very tender, but for me, the flavor was a little lacking. For dessert, we had the baklava, which was delicious. The drinks were tasty, strong, and definitely worth ordering. The restaurant is located in a busy area of Astoria, so parking can be a challenge. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would come back to try more items from the menu. read more

My friend and I decided to try this restaurant after a shopping spree at Lockwood. We ordered the Figenza cocktails ($18) for each of us. We shared the Crab Cake ($22), Mushroom Cigar ($16) and the Scallops ($36) served with delicious squash souse and sliced figs. For main we each got a salad and shared the Beef Skewers ($17). My friend had the Fig Salad ($21), while I had the Beet Salad ($19). The food was delicious, the server Alexandr was very attentive and the space was very nicely finished and elegantly decorated. We were the only guests there besides a group of women celebrating something, but as the evening progressed, more and more people arrived. Overall it was a very pleasant dinner with my bestie. Came here for a birthday dinner with the family. We had no reservations but it was not packed at all so we did not think it was an issue. We were immediately seated by the hostess that had a bland greeting. Once we sat down, we waited for our server. As time passed by I thought we were completely forgotten. Another minute passed by, I planned on speaking with the hostess but out of nowhere one server came and gave us water. Then another waiting session for a different server to take our orders. We were gonna order appetizers but by the time our server came we were so hungry that we decided to just get straight into the entrees. Wow, this was amazing! I stopped in for lunch and was seated immediately. The complimentary pita is out of this world with olive oil and fresh herbs. We tried the Greek style mac and cheese, the lamb burger, and the stifado. Mac and cheese was unique and exactly what I wanted it to be - a great obvious blend of Greek cheeses. The lamb burger was huge and fresh with an appropriate amount of feta sauce. Truffle fries with it were fresh and extra truffle-y. The stifado fell apart at the touch of a fork and had great and flavorful cinnamon-y tomato sauce. Tables were cute and I liked how they kept the doors open because the weather was nice. Had a reservation for my best friends birthday party. Ans when we got there the table was ready which is always a plus. We were all greeted right away as well. The service was great from start to finish our waiter answered any questions we had, Panos was his name. Everyone's meal came out fresh and was so delicious. First time visiting this place the food and service were amazing. The place itself is cozy. Interesting drink menu. The Ode cocktail was good with a nice smoke finish. The place is really nice and staff were great, however the food for groups was a scam and the overall food taste was not good at all. We ordered the Tomohawk steak which was meant for three people, it was barely one large portion and very fatty. (See photo). Questionable on whether that bone even belonged with that steak. And at a cost of $175!! We also ordered a 3 pound black sea bass. Very dry, a bit fishy, and clearly not the size it was supposed to be. It honestly looked like they took the head of a 3 pound fish and paired it with a smaller fish on the plate. (See photo only a little removed and on a plate in the photo). The waiter did reduced the charge to a 2 pound fish, but at $84, it was still not good at all and very overpriced. The best thing we had was the Greek salad. The saganaki was weird (still tasted good though). Mousaka was ok, fig salad and salmon tartare good. Overall, way over priced for the food quality and taste. Hopefully this gets better in time and/or they step up their game. Astoria is full of great Greek spots and this is not one of them. read more

There are so many restaurants in Astoria, but we come back from time to time because this place is airy, spacious, the food is generally good, and the service is good. For brunch we ordered a few apps to share and burgers. The food came very quickly and everything was good - except for the veggie chips, which I hoped would be crispy. The complimentary bread was good as always, I could eat two baskets of it if I didn't watch myself. While Astoria is overflowing with Greek restaurants, choosing one out of the many was easy thanks to Amylos' outstanding menu. It contained more than just the usual dishes commonly found in Greek cuisine, and I was dying to try them. Complimentary basket of pita bread Sooo good; very flavorful. I couldn't stop eating them even though I knew I had to save my stomach for the main courses! 10/10 Spanakopita ($15; Layers of phyllo, spinach, feta cheese, side of mixed greens) I didn't think I would like this but it was the best appetizer of the night. The crispy, flaky layers of dough embracing the spinach and cheese were pure perfection. 10/10 Fried Calamari ($17; Mediterranean calamari, lemon, extra virgin olive oil) When my friend asked if we wanted it grilled or fried, I immediately said fried. Even though grilled calamari is pretty yummy at Greek places, there's no better way to have it than fried for me. The ones here taste like any other good calamari out there. 9/10 Atherina (crispy, Mediterranean small fish) I usually don't eat small fish because they freak me out but it wasn't that bad because you can't really see the eyes. It was addicting like chips. 7/10 Crabcake ($19, Colossal crab, fried chickpeas, greek yogurt tartar sauce) This was divine. I couldn't tell that the tartar sauce was made out of Greek yogurt, but it makes me happy to think that this dish was slightly healthier than normal! The fried chickpeas were a nice addition even though I wasn't sure what they were at first. The crabcake was pleasantly crabby and quite sizeable for an appetizer. I had it as my main dish. 8/10 Bao Buns Incredibly disappointing; don't order this!! I almost always order bao buns if I see them on the menu, but I've come to realize that it's a dish that requires skills. Amylos reminded me of that once again. First, the meat was sooo dry. However, it did get a tiny bit more juicy when I got to the middle of the bun. Second, there was not enough sauce. Part of what makes bao buns so good is their sauciness, which was clearly lacking here. I kind of forced myself to down this even though it was meh. 2/10 Moussaka ($25, Layers of eggplant, zucchini, potato, spiced ground beef, nutmeg béchamel) Good at first but after a couple more bites it becomes very heavy and filling. I know this dish is 90% meat but sheesh, it was way too much meat for me. Perhaps adding a bit more of a balance such as more eggplants in the bottom layer will do the trick. 6/10 Lava chocolate cake ($13, fresh cream, Tahitian vanilla ice cream) Yum! I love how big the scoop of ice cream was, and I can confirm lava flowed out of the cake. I asked them to serve it as a surprise for the birthday girl and they stuck a sparkler in it. They pulled off the surprise amazingly, as they did with the many others that night. 9/10 I didn't like how as the night progressed, the lights got dimmer and the music louder. Maybe that's the grandma in me talking but I don't think all that extra ambiance was necessary! We found parking across the street after 10 minutes of looking. read more

I came to Amylos to celebrate my birthday on a recent Saturday night with a small group of good friends. The main reason I picked this place is because I saw they have lamb shank on the menu and I was in the mood. It did not hurt that it a beautiful and spacious space as well. I made a 6:30pm reservation and arrived early - took a seat at the bar to wait for my friends to arrive. I noticed an impressive collection of edible and decorative flowers and herbs for the drinks despite this I ordered a Mythos, but my partner in crime's Muse cocktail was pretty as it was delicious. Once seated we ordered a trio of dips - Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata, Hummus along with the Taramosalata which had an addition of crispy prosciutto, bacon and caramelized pearl onions - my friend commented "it tasty fishy" not realizing it is whipped fish roe. For me it didn't have enough of the flavor - the Tzatziki was the stand out dip. Grilled calamari was beautifully presented but average tasting. Since it was a celebration I got carried away a bit and over ordered a dish too many on the mains, but there was plenty of food for everyone and leftovers to take home. The roasted and grilled meats were all very good. The lamb shank on a bed of smoked eggplant puree was fall over the bone tender and rich in flavor - this what drew me here and it hit the spot! The mixed grilled offered plenty of baby lamb, roasted chicken (which came coated and on the side a surprisingly tasty mustard sauce I don't usually see in Greek kitchens), juicy pork-leek sausage and beef skewers. Since I also ordered additional baby lamb the meat made tasty leftovers the next day. The Black Sea Bass I mistakenly ordered deboned thinking it would be easier for the group to share, but next time I will order the whole fish. The brussel sprouts and horta were disappointing. The horta looked more like bok choy and less like dandelion greens. Someone in my party requested moussaka and I thought it was comforting and delicious. The service here was top notch and I enjoyed the vibe hearing some 80s electropop classics that spoke to my Gen X heart. The wide ranging menu, extensive cocktail menu along with beautiful decor makes this a step up from the typical Greek taverna - a great spot for a group or a date, or a group of dates! read more

What a delicious meal, very filling too! Started off with the mussels and pita with spreads - favorite was the spicy feta one. The salmon tartare was my favorite - so refreshing! Then ordered the grilled platter with chicken, sausage, beef - said it was for two people only but us four couldn't even finish it. Came here for a dinner with a close friend on a Sunday night. We made a reservation for 6:30p - there were plenty of tables available but by the time we left around 8p the place filled up. Out of everything we got, our absolute favorite were the scallops. The scallops were perfectly cooked and seared. The sweetness from the butternut purée and bacon marmalade really complemented the scallops. We both took one bite of the scallops and aggressively nodded our heads like, "this is IT". We also ordered the wild sea bass to share, for 2lb it came out to $72. Fish was cooked well - soft and flaky. For the order, it came with 2 sides, EXCLUDING the Greek style Mac and cheese (unfortunately). We got the truffle fries (yum) and Brussels sprouts. The sprouts we can tell were probably well roasted and crispy at one point, but it was just oily and soggy when we got it. Service is great and prompt. Our server was super friendly and knowledgeable, recommending things based on "what we were feeling today" and providing feedback to our questions. Getting the scallops and short rib entrees, our order came out in ~20 minutes. The short rib was absolutely delicious, but the scallops were incredibly chewy and a bit disappointing. The baklava cheesecake for dessert was also a bit squishy and hard to cut into, but alright. These points aside, the energy/ambiance bugged me a bit- for $30-40 a plate, I was expecting something more, but it felt pretty sterile and cold. I had a pretty rough experience here. I placed a takeout order in person around 2 PM on a Wednesday afternoon, when the restaurant was mostly empty - only two other tables were seated, and I only saw one other order pickup. I still had to wait around an hour for the food to be prepared, since as I was told, the kitchen was totally backed up. I didn't realize until I got home, but they had given me the wrong entree - calamari instead of the vegan papoutsaki, which isn't great because I can't eat fish. I was able to get a refund from the restaurant for that item over the phone. Restaurants make mistakes, and I'm inclined to look past them if the food is good. The other item, the butternut squash phyllo purses, was correct in my order. However, they were super oily to the point of being almost inedible. There was a pool of oil in the container that had leaked out from the food. Maybe the experience here is better if you eat seafood, but I don't plan to give this one another attempt. read more

My friends and I went to Amylos on a Thursday night in May, apparently it was Greek night! Then restaurant had live music and people were dancing as they drank and ate. It was a surprise because none of us knew it was Greek night. I highly recommend it if you want to listen to music and enjoy the folks having a good time. If you are trying to have a quiet dinner I would skip it. This was our second time having dinner there as a group. They give you seasoned grilled pita bread at the table. Don't fill up on it because you won't get to your main course! I recommend the three spreads to start with the grilled pita bread and their grilled Octupus. I had their halibut and my friends had the short rib rigatoni, beef skewers and Greek salad. All the dishes did not disappoint. They also have a great drink menu. My friends thoroughly enjoyed the Super Paradise Mule. It's a mix of passion fruit, pear vodka, elderflower and spices. I had a glass of wine from their wine menu. They have a list of Greek wines worth trying. The service was exceptional both times we went. From the moment we walked in and were greeted by the maitre d to the bartender and finally to our extremely attentive server. The restaurant was very busy but we never felt like we were unattended to. Took family to celebrate a birthday here since it always look so inviting and it's usually crowded. The service was excellent and is constantly filling water glasses, changing out plates and silverware after appetizers, and responsive to requests. So 4-stars for service. Appetizers were fried calamari and sushi grade octopus. The calamari were large size ones and very tender. A nice change from the usual smaller size and frozen that's served at many other restaurants. The octopus was also extremely tender. It wasn't gummy but a nice texture. So 4 stars for appetizers. Now for the main courses: the kebab gyro was average. The short ribs were rich so we took most of it home for lunch tomorrow. The squid ink was another rich dish with good flavor. The shrimp linguini was tasty from a tough critic so that's a plus. The halibut but good but on the smaller side and leaves you wanting more to fill your tummy. The lamp chops was eaten at its entirety. Last, the steak was good. Overall, great presentation and good. We would give it a 3.5 stars. There is an offer when you check in with Yelp to get a free cocktail. When I showed it to the waiter to request it to be reflected in the bill since we ordered 2 cocktails. I was told it is only for a glass of wine or beer. The offer said free cocktail so it should have been more clear if there are limitations. Also we asked for a a refill of a pita bread basket but was surprised that it was charged $6 for the item. Don't think it should have been. The final bill was almost $400 and so it felt petty.
